i never used pancake and as long i dont use it i cant feel downgrade
but cmon
this is better deal than DPVR
Whatever that AliExpress listing is, I can't see it anymore
For me personally it's a toss-up between pancake and fresnell optics. I don't think either one is an upgrade over the other. They both have terrible glare issues (one is fixed pattern, the other is floating ghosts). Sure Aspheric optics have their own issues with distortions, but everytime I come back to a headset with aspheric lenses after having used one with different lenses it feels like a breath of fresh air...
I use a Samsung Odyssey+ and I'm pretty sure my eyelashes touch the lens
I had to take off the face padding, but it solved almost all of my focus issues.
Main focusing issue with the Odyssey is... There is no focus adjustment.
Iirc, the online documentation says to increase the tightness of the headband to bring the lenses closer to your eyes to adjust focus...
Is that what using a focus wheel means?
I just assumed everyone uses focus adjustment
No not all headsets have it
Pico neo 3
But yes, i do have corrected vision
Majority don't have it
Yeah, I found that out when i bought the Odyssey+. I'm glad i didn't pay over 300 Dollars for them...
the only headset i know of with adjustable focus is the gearvr
Also htc vive has it
Lol, the only "headset" I've ever been able to afford is gearvr...i guess that explains a lot
Also, those 5 dollar phone Holders all seem to have it
But maybe that's just to make up for bad design or tolerance
I guess this is what i get for buying a low-mid range hmd instead of a sub-low range hmd
It would be nice if Samsung had an app for Android that let you use an hmd connected to a phone.
The cables pretty much already exist on the market in the form of dex cables
Phone headsets have really simple optical setups
like
embarrassingly simple
and the whole rest of the system too
The lenses on the Odyssey are very specifically shaped
no electronics or tracking or anything
I mean, i think that was the idea of cardboard
and the vive is famously bulky
But yes, the odyssey is so much better at tracking and stuff. And the resolution is probably much higher
Only disappointing part I've experienced is the passthrough cameras are really bad... Or at least the image is when i peak into the real-world to see my desk
wait when did you buy this
Lol, i love when im in desktop mode and i can look at something really closely by drawing it "near "my face""
6 or 7 days ago
did the person selling it tell you microsoft is dropping support in 2026
Steam vr seems to work fine.
The employees typically don't know these things, but i did read about that somewhere. As long as steamvr and openwhatever keep working, I'll be fine. I barely even use the Microsoft side of the device
Also, despite it being a "mixed reality" device, I've only ever used it as an hmd, not an AR device.
Steamvr needs microsofts driver too
also which employee??
the oddysey isnt sold new anymore i assume you bought it used
it was never capable of mixed reality to begin with so you cant even if you want to
as Linus rants it https://youtu.be/VCqfs6yg2XU?si=_Y-iTWgXdLa2CgQr&t=279
Windows Mixed Reality platform is here and we got our hands on an Acer headset..but can it compete with the Rift and Vive?

You want the name of the employee who was at the register or the name of the employee who opened the case for me?
I kinda got that feeling from the quality of the video when I "peaked" at the outside
I did buy it used
it works well enough for me
I would also describe it as "good", but im not "experienced" as the kids would say
if you are first time user, any PCVR headset will be pretty decent
well, that sucks. So in 2026 Microsoft is gonna force an update that deletes the drivers?
after that, its hard to satisfy when upgrade is not big enough
plus im poor, so i probably won't ever buy one again
so, when 2026 rolls around, all the PCVR equipment will stop working on windows?
no
Windows Mixed Reality headsets will stop working after this year update for Windows 11
and by 2026 for Windows 10 you should not use it
"should not use it"?
Will it send me into a coma or something?
Will I get stuck in a mediocre MMORPG?
no but Windows 10 will stop getting security update
specifically October 14th 2025
oh, you mean W10...not the headset
yes you can still use WMR on Windows 10 until security update stops then you should not use it
that is expected unless microsoft gets annoying and remove it on windows 10 for some reason
imagine if someone kept using WMR afte the security updates stopped and they got hacked and went into a coma
im gonna go to sleep instead of doing vr right after being awake for 12 hours and see if that makes it any less grating
From where??
a local place that sells things used
is used electronics really that foreign in some places?
I mean, Amazon literally exists...
Very common in my country, but people usually buy it via either personal meetup or e-commerce app. People only buy new items on physical stores
Mostly because physical shops mark things up too much for used items
After Microsoft starts sending out the update to retroactively delete drivers to stop WMR devices from working and sending dozens of users into comas, could they still pursue legal action if say, Samsung made their own driver for their phones or for PC?
no
as long they dont use MS trademark
which Monado is working on it
that feel when you don't really use guns in real life, but everything you know tells you to keeps your guard up
i gotta figure out why aiming with iron sights isnt working
is the gun model not actualy designed with actual sights and using the model's sights not actually useful?
I'm trying to figure out a way to capture the headset image. So far Steam's Screenshot function works...until it magically stops responding to the hotkey.
it would be nice if I could tell windows to mirror the headset video to a screen
I run vrchat on a 3050 8gb, ask me anything
Capture as-in video capture? You can use the OpenVR Input Plugin for OBS to capture the raw SteamVR compositor output (in full res). From there you can crop it down to 16:9 and record/stream it...
This plugin provides an input plugin to 64bit OBS that allows capturing directly from OpenVR/SteamVR mirror surface in full resolution.
Either left or right eye image can be captured.
Cropping can be configured in the plugin properties, with...
No, I just wanna be able to get screenshots. I have a 3 button pedal I can assign hotkeys to.

is there something that doesnt require me to set up OBS just to make screenshots?
I'll probably just try to get steam screenshots working better
Yeah, for screenshots I don't really know a better option then the "SVR dashboard + trigger" combo for screenshot...
A lot of games also have a 2D desktop output you could screenshot
F12 is the default key for screenshots, which works "great"(no PNG) until it stops responding. And I know it isnt the pedal because Chrome still responds to it
i think the desktop is limited to 1080p
is there penalty for capture card on VR headset?
It won't work
Headsets with HDMI and DP generally use DDM and the driver identifies the headset by it's EDID and only init to a screen with a matching EDID. As the capture card will have a different EDID the driver won't work
There are some exceptions, where the rendered image is just dropped to a desktop and the headset shows up as just another screen (the PSVR1 drivers generally work that way), but iirc even the OG Vive with DDM disabled still won't work with the HDMI going through a capture card...
What about devices that can clone EDID?
Are there any splitters that pass through EDID of one of the displays?
1890x945
it's not full res, but it's ok...i guess
ah, that was just the VR Home or whatever
in-game it's 2328x1165
no noticable stutter when using periodical(10 second) ss
i call this one "The Reach Around To The Balls"
Always practice gun safety and make sure your gun is clear by visually inspecting the barrel
honestly if the quest 2 was available for 200 usd here i would so buy one
Weee. New eye prescription. Time to buy new lens inserts
Anyone know if it's possible to play steamvr games on quest but using the quest for rendering?
is the QuestVR an x86 device?
does the quest itself run Linux? and and you insteall SteamOS on it?
can we install Linux on it and maybe get SteamOS working?
They run android, which is based on Linux. They're really locked down though and I doubt you can do anything with it
Is SteamVR an android app?
No?
steamos is based on arch linux
Actually you can sideload updates
It's possible to do something with that maybe?
It does have secure boot enabled with no obvious way to disable it though
either way steamos is using the x86 architecture so good luck having it on arm
Congrats, you answered your own question
"sideload update" might just be them missusing the term "sideload" and what that axtually is is just "update manually from a user provided file"
Not really. I asked if there was a way to use the quests processor for graphics rendering while running a game on machine already running steam vr. It was you that started talking about running steamos on the quest itself
You want to use the Quest as an externam graphics co-processor for your PC?
Depends on what graphics you are rendering...Are you talking like, helping the game render things? or are you talking about like having an overlay hud?
also, does the device have two different video paths for the "android" part and the pcvr part?
if the video path for the PCVR mode is totally different than the "andoid" part, then there might be nothing you can do
Basically just rather than the PC doing the rendering itself, it just sends the raw video data to the quest which does the graphics rendering, the game itself (logic and stuff) is still handled by the pc
You wanna do some sort of SLI link from the PC to the Quest?
Basically yeah
Answer: No you cannot play any PCVR on standalone Quest.
Not possible. And never will.
Sideload is for update. It is impossible to install any other OS.
No. Because bootloader is not unlocked.
All you can do is factory reset and update.
Even if unlocking bootloader is possible it will be as impossible as trying to run PCVR on a phone with extra steps.
so you want to send drawcalls over wifi??
why
Pico can have its bootloader unlocked though without any TWRP for pico can't do much
Pico has another problem that no one bothers making custom software for it
Wait, the device he's talking about doesn't even have a PCVR mode...wtf? That makes his original question really weird...like "use the quest for rendering". Of course it's gonna be used for rendering...it's the device.
no that is not possible
if that was the case, dual gpu or dual cpu would have been popular
i have no idea who you are responding to...
i mean
or at all
right. the quest is THE DEVICE itself
so him asking if you can make the quest do the rendering seems weird
And the gpu in the quest is dog slow compared to anything in a full pc
so is the quest a self-contained device or a PCVR device?
was the other pwerson not telling the truth?
if you think it is easy to offload workload externally for gaming then it would solve so many problems
its a standalone device not capable of PCVR
Both
yeah
you approach two discord users. one always tells the truth...
the PC does heavy lifting and send video to quest
Everything renders on the pc like any other pcvr headset and then it's streamed (over usb or wifi) to the headset
so it's a wired(or unwire) "remote"play device for VR?
yes
it does not process anything but decoding video data sent from PC
so it's essentially a PCVR device, someone just wants to be contrarian
It also has built in processing
you can run games on it by itself
but it's a phone soc so not very demanding games
it can play PCVR if its connected to PC and stuff are rendered in PC
how bad? Equal to a SD400? or closer to SD800?
what
Snapdragon 865 for Quest 2
that's not horrible, but i guess it would also depend in the GPU...if that's a seperate part
it's not horrible for sure
But considering you can cram a card with literally ten times the performance into a pc
I could prabably play some PS2 games on it, but i would expect magical reductions in FPS occasionaly
so, it has a 855, runs android, but can't run emulators
Menaced — Today at 6:32 AM
there is a way to run emulators
Menaced — Today at 6:33 AM
it can run emulators
that was fast
or install it using an APK
yes that is ewhat i mean sideloading
i know. i was just being pedantic
wdym
these are the same statement
i cant read
same 💔
so, like i was gonna say before i got distracted by that other person's amazing question
So far, I've been using my Odyssey+ with no facepad and the device is just resting on the bridge of my nose. It's not what I would call extremely comfortable, but I could easily use it for about 2 hours easily
you want a comfortable headset
Wait no facepad??
ok i thought you are looking into upgrading headset
you mean you have plastic touching your face??
heck no,. im poor. im lucky i have this one
there's a rubber bridge pad built in. unless the rubber is made of plastic
...
You mean where the pad should be? i think my eyeballs would touch the lenses before my face touched the spot where the pad attaches
are you talking about just the bridge of your nose
"the device is just resting on the bridge of my nose"
i think so
no i mean you do have the big ol C-shaped pillow around the rest of your face right
I think, for me, the minor discomfort of having the device on my nose far outweighs the vast improvement in focus, and how secure it is from moving on my face
wait it's a wmr headset aren't those all halo designs
I do still have it in my possession. It's in the paper bag I got from the store when i bought it
not all
Bro put it on wth
why?
i dont think playing with blury visuals counts as "comfier"
ive tried it both ways. it's more comfortable to play without the pad
meh alright
"normally", yes
if i ever decide to double the cost of the device, i'll think about it
Oh and i didn't think about the fact that halo designs don't put pressure on your face
halos are kinda hit or miss imo all the ones ive tried haven't fit nice on my head
what is the other option beside a halo?
straps
in my experience they rest the weight more evenly across the head
being slightly flexible
Would wearing my glasses be almost as good as using the lens inserts?
Especially vs halos with no top strap because then youre relying on the friction against your forehead to prevent the headset from sliding down
Yup
provided you can fit them inside the visor
there's also the concern of scratching them
either set of lenses
vr lenses are almost all plastic
eyeglasses can vary but are generally harder material i think
The first result for lens inserts is 69 dollars...im not sure i want to spend almost the same as I spent on the actual device on some accessory i appearently don't really need
what's your prescription
meh just like do you have strong glasses
Because
you won't get 20/20 acuity in any current vr headset anyway
here we go. are you ready?
i went to the hospital a few years back and upon being released they set me up at a free clinic and i got a PCP and we did some thing and i ended up with some meds and then they offered to get tested for a eye perscription and i agreed and we went through all the eye tests and stuff and in the end the doctor only gave me a half-strength perscription because she was "afraid if I got the full perscription i would not like them and stop wearing them". so now i had half-strength perscriptions. and she said to come back in a year to get the full strength. but in about 6 or 9 months the free clinic basically told be to "f off"(they gave me some info on some lower cost clinics). And they implied i should stop going to them...,but they also still continued to give be phone calls to schedule appointments with them...(wtf, im confused).
So, now i have some half-strength glasses and if I want to get a real prescription, i'd basically need to seek out a whole new optometrist .
😨
i warned you
i think the best part is that going to s free clinic implied i was poor, and forcing me to buy a whole extra set of glasses kinda is counterintuitive
does anyone have 13600k and 4080/4070 combo?
4000 is a out of my budget for now but I might get one of those cards a few months from now
it's fine as long as it's not intensive
sweat+blind spot, I pretty much have to wipe my glasses while playing sim racing/ shooters kek
if my prescription were stable I would have personally shelled out for the inserts
i was just wondering how strong your glasses were bc if it's anything below like +/-2 it's probably not even gonna make a perceptual difference anyway
oh my vision is fucked up
because the panels and optics in the headset are worse
not u i was talking to the other guy
my bad
dont worry, i have no clue anyway
i do have a picture of the machine tho...i could probably read that
am i legally blind?
if im blind...i dont think glasses would help
does your clinic cover that?
i dont have a clinic
im saying bc u have just +1 and astigmatism and my headset has such low res pixels and such fresnel lens glare it doesn't even look better when I'm wearing my glasses
because you should get your eyes checked every 6 months to a year ish anyways
could i die?
It's been like 3-4 years since i had my eyes checked
am i gonna be ok?
I probably would have gotten run over if I have't replaced my precription at least every year lol
but some people have a stable prescription
just get it checked because it's been a while
not even for vr, it will make your life much nicer
I'll do that immediately. Thank you
also if the inserts are out of your budget look into those fitness face interfaces
or turn on the ac I guess lol
why? is it hot?
it's completely open. and the lack of a sealed pad means the air flows freely
I pretty much sweat buckets while playing f1
Damn that actually sounds nice
but also take my experience with a grain of salt because I live in a f'ing desert
feels so gross playing beat saber and drenching the foam in sweat
Which one?
yeah it's perfect for cardio games
I wouldn't sim race with it though, because it lets more light in
which desert?
Point to on the map where the desert touched you
The Sonoran Desert (Spanish: Desierto de Sonora) is a hot desert in North America and ecoregion that covers the northwestern Mexican states of Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur, as well as part of the southwestern United States (in Arizona and California). It is the hottest desert in both Mexico and the United States. It has an ...
I am not american
UAE?
I am middle eastern, to make it as simple as possible I live in southern Israel
close
is that near Jordan? im american. i dont know geology
I wanted to avoid specifying where I live because of the drama it causes everytime I mention it
hold on, lemme google where israel is...hopefully google believes in israel
I'm not even mad lol because I won't be surprised if some american journalists don't even know where israel is supposedly is
i just assumed it was like north of UAE and maight be close to africa in some way, but east of Germany and west of china
wait you weren't joking
im american. we never joke
anyway. im sorry if i offended you by not knowing where you country is
you really know how to press my buttons
you want a real opinion about soccer?
I find it hilarious that I was offended more by the soccer part lol
Any size below 4 is a novelty size and should never be used for a game.
i can agree with that
but I am also really picky with my balls
the worst ball I am usually playing with is the ucl replica
Phrasing!
haha I have done it on purpose
i should get some rest. i have a busy day of not going to work ahead of me today
I've just realised how spoiled I am football wise, my dad bought me world cup replica balls lmao
have a great one
Have you played that one Ubisoft bird game? It was "on sale" for 5 dollars, so i bought it...i imagine it probably has caused at least one person a neck injury
no but the closest experience I had was getting a mikasa knuckleballed to my family heirloom
My real challenge in the long run is finding a way to play beatsabre with this 4 meter cable
index?
Odyssey+
my current best idea(that im gonna hate actually doing), is move my tower to the other side of my table closer to where my bed/ projector are, and then face away from the computer to maximised the cable
all of my VR has been sitting
I guess it also depends on the game
while playing sim racing and beat saber you arms are in front of you so you don't notice the cable at all
is your pc on your desk or something?
does a folding table from costco count as a desk?
you know...im afraid to ask where you "tech people" would think to put a Pc besides, "on the place where the monitor is".
oh damn Odyssey+ has a proprietary cable
"lol, duh, you mount it to the wall behind your monitor"
I forgot about this part
it's the equivalent of hiding the router in a drawer
if my geology is correct, to maximise the cable, i should put the PC on a bookshelf about shoulder height
not really
technically you could plug it into a laptop and stream it from your desktop
but I am not sure if the latency is worth it
The cable will drag down on you
but it surely beats yanking your desktop into the floor
Optimally it should be on the floor as close to the rear corner of your space as possible
For cable reach that is
floor computers are
does the cable cease to have weight when it originates from another elevation?
Yes because it rests on the floor for most of the run
Also...im american...everything on my drags down on me
you'll also have more free space on your costoc folding table
I have no idea how you aren't concerened about your setup lol
it will probably fall apart one day with your shit
ive been mostly sitting my entire PC usage...so...it's been fine
do thinks just fall apart for some reason?
Oh yeah, that's why there's a tripod under one side
Rate my vr setup
Hey guys I got a Dell Visor, and the eye cover thing is messed up, its like damaged and breaking apart, where can I find replacements, I tried looking online but I dont fully trust the results. I saw stuff about a 6mm HTC Vive eye cover fitting. Any suggestions from you guys?
yeahhhhhhhhhhh its impossible to find new replacement
try find if anyone have a good 3d printing model premade and pay a 3d printing service for it
like this one https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4569522/files
Project is discontinued! Feel free to tinker and remix!
Prototype of an adapter to use an HTC Deluxe Audio Strap with a Dell Visor Windows Mixed Reality headset. With a proper buckle I am also working on a way to use the regular cloth strap as well with it. Currently prototyping parts and not finalized as of 8/18/2020.
This is a remix of parts d...
Who did you buy it from?
Second hand on Facebook marketplace, noticed minor damage but no damage to the actual headset, just wear and tear to the foam
Controllers work fine
Ugh I took off the old one, for the time being till I get a new one, how do I re attach it?
Idk
then dont...
does DP or HMDI have better length tolerances?
I'm already adapting from DP to HDMI for my headset.
Would I be better off using a 6 foot DP extension than a 6 foot HDMI extension?
Argg. Time to buy new inserts at some point. My prescription went from +1.00 to +2.00
DisplayPorts can reach a little over 6ft before losing quality but they greatly surpass HDMI in bandwidth and etc while HDMI can reach 30Ft+ offering more flexibility.
It depends more on the type of DP or HDMI and your situation. What cable are you planning to use?
I'm not planning on using a specific cable yet
I have a odyssey+ that's already using a dp to hdmi adapter
Hey if anyone of you guys knows anything about the rx 7600xt's vr performance please let me know
Is the 7600XT better or worse than the RX580. Because I'm using a RX580 with a Ryzen 5 2600, and VR seems to run fine
100% better
Over a 3050 8gb?
Ok great because I play a hella lot of vrchat and I do need the vram
My vram usage on my 3050 gets almost maxed out
4090 tested in public
12GB VRAM of usage
so a RX 6700 XT is a better value if you want to save bit more money
I've been considering it but the problem with the 6700xt is size, it's gonna be difficult for me to fit it in my case
Most models are 30+ cm and my case fits up to 32cm cards so I need some space between the card and fans
But again, thank you for the advice, you've been the most helpful so far
There's just so little information on the 7600xt out there so it just makes it impossible to get answers
I mean.. what card do you run vr with? Ans how's that?
Testing in publics is basically meaningless. Your values aren't comparable unless all parameters but the one you're testing are identical...
And the # of people doesn't mean anything. They could all be very well optimized in the 3090 test and really badly optimized in the 4090 one...
The test in a private instance might be comparable, but then again, you don't know their testing methodology. That's what GN (and I guess LTT Labs now too) put so much focus on and transparency...
Yeah, the nature of VRchat with user avatars makes testing in a public completely useless. All it takes is that one person whose avatar is equivalent to 20 typical avatars to make player count a useless comparative load metric.
It's really not that hard to test with a consistent load, just not in a public lobby.
3080ti, can do stable 2544 per eye in some games
That is true, I can join a world with a few people and get 15 fps and then join a world with 40 people and get lkke 50 fps
3080tie
Hehe 3080tie
I haven't used an Nvidia GPU in years (last time was a 1060 6gb)
Mostly what I'm asking is what is vrss?
so uh- i found a spare gtx 760 and decided to run vrchat on it,
despite the beleifs to the contrary, it ran fine-ish
the 2gb vram filled up almost instantly and spilled over to system ram
turns out that an 8gb gpu should be the minimum requirements for vr
vrchat*
Vrchat is an outlier and shouldn't be used to judge system performance in anything lol
Yeah, was just about to say. Most VR games run just fine on 6GB of VRAM as long as you're not running some crazy high res headset...
(or a headset that needs it's image encoded on the PC, like the Quest or Pico)
idk why quest link even let me connect to my pc
im getting the urge to buy more hardware again is the quest 1 even worth anything by now
if you are a collector yes for brand new
if you use it it better be really cheap
its a time ticking bomb of losing its usefulness fast
my school has like 8 quest 1's
i sometimes play them with the school laptop which let me remind you is a 2gb gpu
mx 570 if you're curious
Well they can still use link right?
i wouldn't say im a collector more of a hoarder really....
until updat breaks it
Im looking to get into VR, mainly PCVR, i was thinking the Quest 2 with a good link cable. Thoughts? Pc is more than capable just dont wanna spend $1000cnd+ on a decent set and have it sit ya know
then it is good as beginner headset
alternativel i recommend used valve index for great upgrade path
if you re new, even budget one wont disappoint you
kinda what i figured, i tried the valve index for like 30-40 mins and i liked it but wanted my own. but one day maybe but cool thank ya!
Obivous part is the tracking and display reso
but good to know its good for a begginer headset!
isnt the quest 2 like the same resolution as an index
it's even higher
yeah the index is definitely aging
The index may be aging but what keeps it holding that premium feeling is the FOV. It’s still massively larger than the quest 2. Even with a higher resolution you get more of the “goggles” effect on screen compared to the index. And the fact it has 2 screens per the quests single panel. You’ll catch the end of the quest screen edges in your view before you come close to the edges of the index fov.
also high refresh and wired makes it best at beat saber
Dat tracking 🙂
Reasons why quest 3 and Pico are much better than Q2
Index is closer to those two despite the lower res panels than it is to the Q2
Yeah q3 has a pair of panels like the index. Much better than the Q2 they were comparing with. I mean I should hope so with the crap they did with the quest pro. I never have gotten to try a Pico headset yet. Havent heard anything bad though 🙂
But still I consider them all inferior just because of the tracking they use. I'd pick outside in over any standalone anyday. But I dont mind cables and extra setup stuff either as where others may hate it like my wife.
fun fact Quest 1 have same res as Index
Resolution isn't everything when it comes to SDE, and neither is just FOV+Res relevant. The most important metric for SDE is actually pixelfill, but good luck finding actual specifications for that for any headset :/
But yeah, as Menaced said, Q1 and Index have the same on-paper res, tho the Index has about 33% more subpixels as the Q1 uses an RG-BG Diamond AMOLD subpixel arrangement while the Index has a more standard RGB-Stripe subpixel arrangement
Not really tbh
You can tell that it has a worse pixel fill then other arrangement types tho
The OG Vive is prolly the worst offender of all headsets using such a panel, but in generall an RG-BG diamond subpixel arranegement generally looks to have worse SDE (even if just marginal like the Q1/VP1 compared to the Index)
So worse screen door effect
microled vr displays when
MicroOLED is just a display tech like OLED on Glass, LCD, Gas Plasma Discharge and CRT
It doesn't tell you anything about the pixelfill (or dot pitch on a CRT) and also nothing about the sibpixel arrangement (or chroma mask on a CRT)...
I think once the finals stress is over, I'm gonna get a Meta Quest 2 as I'd like to get into VR. It's just 250 bucks at the moment
Maybe a higher storage one he’s talking about in store still in stock?
what's this game?
Eagle Flight. last I checked it was 5 dollars. Starts off as a bird simulator, but slowly become cird combat simulator...if birds had projectiles and shields
It's not even a distinct display tech, it's really just a description. OLED but micro. The display tech used is OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) for the two microOLED displays I've read about. Since micro is being used to describe the pixel size, it actually does directly indicate a better pixelfill than regular OLED.
Not sure about microLED, but the AVP uses microOLED panels. And despite what apple marketing might like to say, it's a VR headset lol
I mean, it just hints at a higher pixel density or at the very least a much smaller panel size. You can still have a $hit pixelfill with a high pixel density and vice versa...
But yeah, Oled on Silicon generally has a pretty good pixelfill
There are some headsets that use MicroLED panels, but I can tell you from experience that local dimming in VR just kinda doesn't work. There's the Quest Pro, Pimax Crystal and the Varjo Aero. The last of the three uses the miniLED backlight to sortof chase the refresh and reduce display latency that way; so no local dimming.
The Pimax Crystal and Quest Pro both have local dimming and from what I've heard pretty similar between the two. What I can say for certain is that on the Quest Pro it basically boils down to "yes, the screen can be absolutely black if literally nothing is on screen". Just the tiniest white element and immediatly 2/3 of the screen lights up. It's honestly way more distracting then lens glare and such...
what is better for vr: an iphone 13 or a quest 2 (asking for real, there is one guy who is deadass thinking that his iphone 13 is better for vr than a quest 2)
Hardware that is dedicated to that single purpose is always better than the hardware that is not intented for it, so yes, quest 2 by far is better for vr
It's 250 CHF at digitec.ch ||CHF is swiss currency|| and it's for a new one
its apples and oranges but for vr, quest 2 any day
lmaowhaaaaatttt
Why would he say that
how many gigabytes is that and what does it cost on meta's store?
It's the 128GB model, though I'd likely use it as just an interface
The iPhone loses because it does not have hardware to make vr despite being faster
Lacks position tracking is big issue
No lens no controllers
No hand tracking
No s9ftware to run it other than video viewing in cardboard mode
No hardware matter if it cannot have basic things that keeps you moving and tracked
Your friend may misunderstood what is needed to make vr good
If performance is all it needed, GearVR would still exist to this day
is the mocopi body tracker compatible with pc-vr ?
and what about slime vr ?
i searching for a small / slim body tracking device that is relative affordable.
?
Careful with DIY versions. Often they are ripoff because they cheap out on IMU, the chip that tracks rotation.
Read description. They must describe what IMU are used.
If they use MPU6050 or MPU6500, avoid avoid!
I saw someone attempted to sell MPU6050 in vket those are very low quality and should never be made
hm... and what can you recommend that is gyroscopic tracking, and relative small / slim ?
Join slimevr server they have more reliable sellers or buy official slimevr from crowdsupply
Or learn how to diy which just yesterday we made the first solder-free slimevr tracker
At just $160 for 10 point tracking full body wih elbows and feet
ooh... sounds nice
Just dont be afraid to ask in slimevr discord server
oh yeah you can probably get vive trackers AND lighthouses for that price
Oh and read the docs first if you diy
Can be even cheaper if you buy used or hack a vive controller
i believe it
yeah, but i have 2 problem with vive trackers:
- they are too big to be comfortable.
- they use laser tracking, so i can't cover it.
Yeah occlusion means you lose tracking out of sigh
Also battery life is poor
Slime keeps improving and you can fit as many battery as you can
why is it called slime 🥴
SlimeVR idk
yeah how flattering
battery life is not an issue for me,
i mean, if you can fit a more quality battery in it, than you can upgrade the default battery life really quickly.
My trackers lasts 11 hours but i can fit twice size if i want to lol
And it will get even better
yeah. that's why i don't care about battery life. 🙂
There is experimental nrf version that lasts 60 hours at third of my battery size
More efficiency
wow. if the rest of the VR equipment would evolve that fast, we can live multiple days in a row in vrchat with the same equipment. 🙂
(i should replace the cushion on my headset for hygiene reasons)... but other than thats, it would be cool.
woa what
how'd they do that
that's like 18 times more efficient
300mAh lasts 43 hours
Its in #smol-slime channel
But it does not uses wifi it uses its own protocol
They use their own dedicated connection to save power
Since wifi chip is very power hungry
btw, i plan to spare my money for about 2 year, and then i could buy myself an ultimate VR kit:
here is what i seek out for myself:
- Headset: Bigscreen Beyond
- Controller: Bhaptic - Tactgloves
- Tracking: ???
- Treadmill: Catvr
and if it finally gets affordable, i plan to buy a full body haptic suit.
but currently, its either 2.000.000$, or its too sketchy to trust in the company...
What controller is that?
but i only buy the gloves.
i heard it can be functional as a controller.
I dont know about that.
How much does it cost
Do they have actual demo of playing games with those or is it another etee controller limitation
in theory, it works with arm gestures...
and i only need it for vrchat anyway.
300$ / pair
Then how do you expect to move
the movement is via the catvr
There is a lot more than just that actually
Some worlds require you to move thumpstick to open menu
You also need to open scroll wheel menu
You have to figure how to open desktop menu without getting on desktop
do they have force feedback or just touch feedback
Its a lot of extra learning curve
i think the gloves only has touch feedback.
It says right there it doesn't track on it's own
Also in 2 years there are other more affordable and better quality gloves on the work from like LucidVR and ImmersiveDevices
hm... then i will rely on my body trackers / base station.
For finger tracking????
wait who is this
They even managed to open menu and rotate thumbstick emulated
hm... not bad.
Maker of things, mostly VR tech.
Working on ImmersiveGloves, IMU based low profile gloves for social VR.
I looked into lucidvr a while ago how are they progressing
Check their discord
so you guys ever notice how many more queer people there are in vr communities compared to the average tech space
nope.
wow okay thanks for an interesting discussion
Nope, because there isn't more, you just notice them more easily
I mean exactly what I said
How do you mean i notice them more
like what would you say is different about vr spaces that makes queer people stand out
Got a chance to try the HTC Vive
It's... Shit ngl
SDE that's actually worthy to be called a screen door
Oh yea of course fresnel shit sweetspot
Comfort is very subpar
The wands are heavy pieces of dogshit
the first one??
well i mean it's approaching a decade
Lol yea i was shocked how screeny the displays were compared to even the gearvr when i tried it
but that was also my first experience with roomscale and it was so cool just because of that
"<x> old thing is bad"
Wow so surprising
I'm just sharing my experience. Ok?
Got something more useful to share?
Rather than annoying remarks
fr who is this guy
The whole vive experience seems to be very clunky and sorta dev-kit like
The headset itself yea it's bad by today's standard but my biggest complaint is actually the wands
oh absolutely
im getting flashbacks to all the early games which just inserted the physical vive controller as an in universe tool instead of even trying to do hand presence
I wanna get something better than my pico 4 sometimes when possible
Though they're all $1k shit
Quest 3 is a sidegrade so i don't count it
I just looked it up, it's only 11 CHF cheaper and it is currently discounted from 280 CHF (discounted it's now 239 while in my fav tech shop it's around 250 CHF)
yeah go for it for sure
i mean, ivry exists, it streams steamvr to your phone that then views it in a cardboard-like way
and it has 3dof tracking by default, and arcore 6dof (but its absolutely dogwater)
its not the same you dont get position tracking from it
by dogwater i mean you need a powerful phone in the first place, and yes, it does overheat after like 20 minutes, also having mirrors in your room is a crime against arcore, plus it gets lost very often
here is an example
SLAM is available through ARCore, but you can easily tell the tracking is quite low quality when you've got the phone strapped to your face. It's pretty obviously targeted at experiences where you're holding your phone out pointing at something.
https://developers.google.com/ar/develop/fundamentals#motion_tracking
dont show me those
show me actual demo of it working
i dont care those i know what arcore is
i saw Galaxy S8 with ARCore demo buit it never seen light of day
because its not practical
the quality is just not greta and without manufacturing put effort into support which they could but they gave up
Excuse me? Go find it yourself if you actually care. I certainly don't lol
i cared and i foudn out you dont need to convinmce me that it can try arcore
What are you even talking about
if you dont care then dont reply me with a ping
You said it doesn't have position tracking. That is incorrect, camera slam and imu is available. At the end of the day it is quite low quality wrt to VR tracking so nobody really cares.
And? Did it actually do it?
No
and never will because manufacturers gave up actually making it possible
the existing hardware is not practical
it needs more than than
It? Who is this it? This is a feature that is actually available today, at this very moment. It hasn't entered the google graveyard (yet).
stop showing me arcore because its not the actual solution
the solution is something else
The iPhone don't do position tracking the way industry standard asks. Sayign ARCore is position tracking is like iPhone lidar is a 3D scanner. Yesn't. I have better things to do. Im done.
The iPhone? Google ARCore is not available on iPhones.
iPhone lidar is a dot projector deformation depth sensor like the Kinect v1. Such a depth sensor could be used with calibration data to produce 3D point cloud if Apple cared to provide that data. I personally don't care to learn about something I don't own so whether that's possible or not, idk. Knowing Apple, probably not.
Ah, they do actually provide the calibration information to produce a 3D point cloud. Very cool, you successfully made me waste my time learning about something I don't have.
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/avfoundation/additional_data_capture/capturing_depth_using_the_lidar_camera
@weak bluff did you not see this video
thats an exmaple of it not working
i do have a bit better demo on my yt channel, i could post it here
This is an example description.
I will, but only when finals are over (or maybe for the upcoming holidays, idk yet), but not now as I'm already distracted enough
VR has been felling like this since the quest 2 is 200-250 new nowadays
Undeniably the best deal
If only mine actually worked lmao
I got my 64gb for 300, spent 200 on upgrades for it, only for an update to brick the headset completely
Should've put an Index there at the top lol
Sure, it's audio solution is still great and on the higher end it's one of the better all in one box deals you can get, but the Index is really starting to show it's age...
Yet there are people who still think the Index is the best headset on the market lol
Heck the Quest 3 runs circles around it...
i don't get the audio part, can't you just use your own headset on the quest?
which invalidates the index better built in audio
Oh trust me, no headphone will give you as much of a spacial audio feeling as the near field speakers you have on the Index. Period.
Sure, open-backs can get close, but nothing beats the Index from my experience
But sticking to an aging headset just for the audio solution isn't worth it imo. Besides, you can build mounts/adapters for Index speakers for a number of different headsets. Just usually requires some amp to get the audio level needed...
yeah index audio is amazing but im starting to think it will be worth it to swap it out just because everything else is outdated
Im pretty sure the index uses actual loudspeaker drivers not headphone drivers too
would make sense for that
it just hangs next to your ear
i mean use your own headphones as in to get better audio quality
not that index audio are headphones
is it really that good?
like i doubt it'd be better than some 300 bucks headphones is it?
the problem is wearing headphones with a quest
anything other than the stock strap is gonna make it hard to wear those headphones
The Index speakers out of the box are better calibrated then some "professional grade" headphones, and certainly better then pretty much anything consumer you can get your hands on. At least for 300 bucks...
If you're really deep into audio and find some really good open-back headphones, then maybe they compare in terms of sound quality. But you just can't beat the sound stage and experience of speakers that float right next to your ears...
Honestly the Q2 are great I've been listening to music on em while playing some boneworks arena lately and it's fine...
Imo the best would be wired noise cancelation iem but afaik there's no high em anymore being made
IEMs for VR are terrible. Half of the immersion equation is the sound, and IEMs have absolutely no sound stage, meaning it sounds like everything sounds like it's coming from inside your head :/
I don't have a Quest 2 or 3, so I can't say how the sound stage is on those, but with the Quest 1 everything sounded like it was coming from in front of me, which doesn't really help either. The Quest Pro is better in that regards, but it's kinda quiet, unless you use some 3D printed sound tunnels
dt880 🗿
I'd like to try the index speakers somehow, but I think that entails having a whole index
and what I actually have is a rift S
but yes I agree with large soundstage and precise imaging being important for immersion in vr
ive been using iems on my q3 since my headstrap just limits me of using my headphones
it makes distorted sounds when just normally selecting stuff on the menu
but if i go to a game it just stops doing that
weird thing
it also sometimes also just works fine as its supposed to do
hey can someone help me with my metta quest 2
Meta customer support probably can
is spending an extra 300 cad for a quest 3 instead of getting a quest 2 worth it?
mostly gaming
on pc?
quest 2 is solid and a really good deal
It never felt right for me to get stuff with the intent of returning it, not liking it can be a thing but you are lowering the value of his product voluntarily. I wouldn't want to have an opened Q3 on my hands because of someone's indecisiveness
You could just rent one for a day
depends on the product imo
from my experierince even big shops dont really let you try out the vr headsets, which makes it incredibly hard to know if thats something you want even then if you end up returning it someone else will just be happy for getting it a bit cheaper.
Looking for augmented reality goggles that I can mirror one of my displays to using Windows 11
Just want it to be reliable, wireless is a plus
Or actually any sort of HUD solution that meets these requirements
Quest 3
If it has to be AR (aka you see the actual real world with your eyes, rather then camera passthrough) then the XReal Air should do the trick. They aren't wireless, but on the flip side they actually look and feel like sunglasses
and might be more reliable bc they're pretty much just a display input for your computer
on the quest you need to faff about with virtual desktop or something similar
Thanks fellas
VR rental exists in a lot of places
I love the XReal Air 2 (Pro) product page. One of the feature points is "Proprietary Optic Engine
with Best Resolution and Color Profile". Yet resolution and color profile coverage are unspecified anywhere lol. Luckily they do specify 0.55" microOLED from Sony and they only sell a 1080p panel at that size.
iirc the Amazon page for the XReal Air 2 lists 1080p as a resolution. At least the german Amazon page does
1080p 500nits 49ppd. honestly doesn't sound that bad, especially compared to what you'd get on the Quest and AVP...
On another slide they also talk about it being capable of 120Hz, tho no word on whether that's possible at native res or not...
Previously on the Air it was only 120Hz "effective" with 3D content, but used 60Hz panels. It's not clear if that's the case for the Air 2 though. The product is honestly really cool but damnit they need to just provide proper detailed specs on a product page. The American Amazon product page doesn't list resolution nor whether that refresh rate is native
I was referring to the product page on their official website though tbc
Resolution is just "best" lmao
lol
The German website doesn't even mention resolution at all (other then the 49ppd number)
It's just on that one slide on Amazon Germany where they mention res...
all of them use a valve index or some other pcvr headset
no, not "all of them"
quests are probably even more common because they don't require a computer to run
well all of them is an overstatement but the ones i was looking at were only using a dedicated pcvr headset
Apparently Bradly has it from a supply chain source that Valve has stopped producing the Index. So it's only a matter of time till you can no longer order an Index
Bro I was checking discord while watching his pimax stream, and right as he said that, I saw your message lmao
I totally agree with Bradly on the new Pimax launches btw. I think they're spreading their resources way too thin. They're both trying to appeal to Reverb G2 and Index users with the Crystal Light, possible Somnium VR1 and Varjo Aero buyers with the regular Crystal and try to offer a Varjo XR-4 competitor, while not actually offering the key benefit of the XR-4. And that all while being a relatively small company catering to a very small nieche...
Plus, it looks like Pimax removed the battery from the back of the Light and Super, without adding a proper counterweight, so they're gonna be super front heavy...
Yeah I do too, I like what they are doing with the light though, it's a lot more of a "standard" vr headset without a lot of bells and whistles, but yeah as you said it's going to pretty front heavy. The whole swapping idea on the super feels gimmicky imo, and they are definitely spreading their resources too thin for all these products
is the back strap suppose to be that tall?
I'm assuming it's similar to the vive pro where the strap goes up for putting it on and then goes down to cup the bottom of the back of your head
The way top strap is set plus OcuLink cable makes it look like fixed 45° angle makes me question
It really looks like they went back to their full-on knock-off VP strap for the light and Super, including the lack of counterweight
hi im brad. I am sorry I haven't been around. Lots of life stuff happened recently. Lets catch up!

states the valve index is fully out of production
huh
interesting
Do you think that means they're ramping up something new or just letting meta take over the market share
well a index 2 has been rumored for a bit.
but right now I wouldn't get an index over a quest 3 the quest 3 just has a better display / optics
would that mean it'll be a lot cheaper aftermarket?
No rather it will make it more rare
more expensive
specifically headset and controller since HTC is in charge of base station 2.0
the base station 2.0 price hike might be a matter of time since valve stopped making $150 base station and HTC is selling it for $200
Also Valve did not discount Valve Index so they intent to keep it in stock for a while
Yeah, Valve apparently hadn't ordered new parts for the Index in quite a while, and the production stop now is only a result of them having run out of certain components. I wouldn't expect the Index to stop being available immediatly, but now it's only a matter of time till the last Index is sold through Steam
I would also assume that they'll keep back a bunch of stock to cater for any RMAs...
It could very well be an indication of preperation for a next gen VR product, or it could just mean that Valve thinks the production capacity is more useful for the Steam Deck... (which tbh, is the more likely case)
Let it die
My only fear is that with time it'll lead to the only viable SteamVR tracked controller that people can buy being the old Vive Wands 🤮
The Index headset? Sure, let it die. It's really showing it's age and a Quest 3 will likely give you a much better experience anyways. But please don't kill the Index Controllers without a viable replacement 🙏 (and no, the Eetee's aren't a viable alternative due to their lack of buttons)
etee wont stop justify their lack of buttons lol
yeah i was thinking about that too
Did they say they're stopping all production or just the headset?
No idea
how can I verify what speed a cable actually supports? I've recently bought a USB-C-C cable with a display showing the power going through it and on the shop page it said USB 3.0 while on the packaging it says 480MB/s indicating USB2. I don't think I have any USB3 devices yet. Also, would my laptop with a USB-C port supporting DisplayPort work with the Quest 2? It shold, right?
yes oculus software or meta quest software have integrated usb speed tester
Do I have to have the headset already to test that?
Alright. I'll just hope for the best that it'll work right out of the box! 4 meters should be enough length to get from the back of my tower into my room and up to my head and it's like 30 bucks where the quest link cable is like 90 bucks and 3m iirc
Edit: the quest link is 5 meters and is 95 CHF
https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/microconnect-usb-c-usb-c-4-m-usb-32-usb-cables-20670703 I was thinking of getting this, it says it's USB 3.2
Key Features Cable length 4 m USB version USB 3.2 Gen 2 (3.1 Gen 2) Connector 1 USB C Connector 2 USB C Connector 1 Gender Male Connector 2 Gender Male Product Color Black, Silver Connector1 Form Factor Straight Connector2 Form Factor Straight Cable Jacket Material Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) Maximum Data Transfer Rate 20000 Mbit/s Plug & Play...
that is... expensive
almost liek official cable
just buy this
or if you want to save money buy from aliexpress
And that other cable is only 4m. Id be a little bit on the cautious side as to not rip the cable out of my PC when in longer or intense play sessions. Probably better to do what Menaced said and get the official cable or one thats just not that expensive. Id reckon 15-20 dollars for a decent 1-2gbps 15ft cable.
am i missing out on a joke or smt else because the link he sent showed a cable for 30chf and you just sent one for 90chf
Its just expensive for what the cable is.
Ofc it's an expensive cable, it's a USB 3.2 Gen2 cable. Way overkill for Link
I dont think he would say 30 is expensive and turn and say 90 is better lol
Yeah its a 20gbps cable, youre paying more for the speed than length 🙂
Isn't 3.2 Gen 2... Just 3.1
USB naming istg
It says both in the description lol
Also I bet that cable is gonna be quite a bit thicker, because of the higher rating. Overall, not the best option for link
Not even really the point.
Exactly lol
5gbps is already overkill 😅
but no middle ground and some cheaper version only reach 1.1Gbps but that is still more than enough
right, 4m might be on the short side. To get from the back of my tower to where I'd stand, it's already like 2m to 2.5m and I'm around 1.8m. I'll see if I can find a 5m cable with at least USB 3.0. The Quest Link is way too expensive and I don't know if I want to spend an extra 60 bucks just for 1m extra cable and a 90° end for the headset-side
Tis true! Id do that over the cable
Or if you already actually have a decent router maybe a battery bank or something to lengthen the play sessions?
our access points are pretty good, I can get around 300-350Mbit/s both ways internally, externally I'm limited by good ol' 25Mbit/s of coax upload xD (along with 250Mbit/s down, both are shared for 5 people however lol)
It has to be WiFi 6 for latency reason
Yeah with it being a 12ft cable Id really be scared of damaging one of my usb ports with that distance.
And also so it can get a dedicated connection with no other users
Since bandwidth is only one factor
Ooof only 300.....Yeah I'd definitely do what Purleen is saying and get yourself a dedicated AP and youd be all set!
Of course you can still use WiFi 5 that isn't dedicated but expect subpar experience
Stutters
How could I check what WiFi version our routers are? Isn't that 802.11AX?
My Dedicated WiFi6 even still experience network hitches
Definitely can't do 400Mbit
Idk if it's my pico's SoC limitation
Or my router tho
Pretty stable when using HEVC 150Mbit
your phone could tell if its an android
Dang.....All Im rocking is a 3-5 year old RT-AX3000 and it does around 800-1.1 no problem all day. Seems like routers should really not be that big of an issue by now. I mean I have almost 50 networks in range and I have multiple wireless links running when the wife and kids end up playing the same time.
at same price as cable you can buy a mini router that does the job from beryl too
Atleast if youre not running some old school wireless N junk.
In task manager it also says the connection type, the network I'm currently in (not my home network) is 802.11.ac. Is that WiFi 5?
yes
Oooh yeah the Beryl! Link that! that thing rocks lol
it works altho not best possible
here the beryl https://store.gl-inet.com/collections/travel-ac-router/products/beryl-ax-gl-mt3000-pocket-sized-wi-fi-6-wireless-travel-gigabit-router
Note: Please be aware that in order to fully utilize all of the features of Beryl AX, you will need to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) is an AX3000 pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 wireless travel gigabit router which comes with one 2.5G WAN port and one 1G LAN port. It runs on MT7981B 1.3GHz dual-
I love that thing. My dad snagged it for when he watches football in the garage lol
Gotta get it back soon
I think I've also seen 802.11.ac when I was at home, so we're probably using WiFi 5. Just gonna see if I can find a good, long C-C cable that doesn't break my bank
Yeah the pocket router is a little more than a cable of course but hey would definitely be a much more enjoyable experience for most. The cable on the head is usually the big annoyance.
300-350Mbit should be enough, also my tower is connected via an ethernet-cable, so there won't be as much latency as using both on WiFi. And as I said, I'll hava a look around for a 5m 3.0 or higher cable that's cheaper than the meta link
if you are willing to wait on aliexpress, they are very cheap
https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/onit-usb-c-usb-c-5-m-usb-40-usb-kabel-35928381 There's this one for 10 CHF more than the other I sent and it's even 4.0, but the main point is that it's 5m, which leaves more headroom than the other 4m one...
that cable is weird
they clain it is USB 4.0
but USB 4.0 is not 10Gbps
plus 10Gbps is overkill
Indeed, USB 4.0 is 20-120Gbps
it's 5m though... that was the main reason I found it
3m is also the max length for passive cables per the 3.0 spec. Lots of red flags for a sketchy cable
As LTT found with their cable tester, even a few name brands failed to meet spec requirements
regardless, no simple male to male cable will charge and run link at same time
Not avoiding, I just always shop at this shop because it just has everything I need
i run 5m copper cable on USB 3.0 myself and it works
Ah yes, the classic works on my machine
that cable is too good to be true for USB 4.0 because such cable is not cheap and rare if it was true
it works but its not up to spec just that does not matter because its still more than enough
there is degradation
power loss and speed loss
it does not reach 5Gbps
but it was still more than enough
technically USB 2 is enough, but then the Quest should have it's own dedicated USB controller on the PC, which you just cannot do, so you still want USB 3...
USB 3.0 is also first duplex USB meaning it can carry data both ways
slightly reduce latency
Actually now that I read the product description of the quest link, it's a fiberoptic cable, which would justify some of the price
arent there cables with a seperate pd port for charging at the same time
yes but that is not male to male anymore
with the disadvantage of carrying data only. Are there any legit 5m copper cables? Or would I have to use fiberoptic ones?
this one is a special version that it is an active cable
which adds power and ensure headset manage to charge
i have some syntech cable similar to that (doesnt manage to charge my quest 3 while using it but the life expectancy is way higher )
maybe plug the power usb A to a power brick?
Is the USB-A on this for data or for power?
power it seems
https://www.amazon.de/Compatible-Accessories-Separate-Charging-Sufficient/dp/B0BGM12LWL?language=en_GB¤cy=EUR this is the cable i have
actually im not sure
that works too
You can just buy a PCIe USB card, one with something like 2 usb C ports and just run on the quest on that. Thats one dedicated controller only handling one device 🙂
This is the cable that I have btw: https://www.amazon.de/KIWI-design-Zubehör-Kabelclip-Kompatibel/dp/B0BLVDH7ZV
Works like a charm, also copper internally
You only need that for USB 2, and blocking an entire PCIe slot just for Quest link is kinda stupid tbh
Yeah it is, but even some cards are only 30-40 bucks. But also theres motherboards that have their layouts with specific USB ports being on only one controller per port. Thats what some of the older PCs that said VR ready around the port. It was a seperate controller for just that port.
Some were fake or did share with one other port but they labeled them and you could just not use that extra port. Was a big thing with getting all the base stations working with older rifts on certain PCs.
My Asus board has one controller on which internally there's only some Asus RGB thing hooked up. Two ports are wired to the frontpanel USB 3 and one last port is hooked up to the frontpanel USB-C. There's nothing else on that controller, so it's kindof a safe heaven for plugging stuff in (you just know it's not gonna be bottlenecked by any other device)
Tho, it's rare to have mobos with dedicated controllers just for one type of input, as it's kindof a waste of resources and money
Right! I hated playing the "find me more bandwidth" game with 4 base stations and the headset and leaving all my stuff alone so i didnt have to sit and plug in/unplug 20 things to play some VR.
Used to have a older r2600/gtx1650 super that we used for the old rift with 4 stations. Had 2 startech usb cards so they would all work correctly as the onboard controllers were poop.
I only found out about this quirk on my board thanks to USBTreeView. I was wondering why nothing seems to be connected to that controller, despite how crowded my USB ports on the back are. Yeah, frontpanel USB 3 has it's own controller practically
Yeah Treeview is pretty nice, I found it for the first time with USBdevview on an older MSI trident system I was using.
Only issue I find with alot of front USB ports is the cable used in the case is usually crap on even mid range cases. Not the ports themselves I think its more or less the cable they use is poor quality.
Yee. For my CV1 I usually plug one camera in the back and the other two in the front. Can't have all three in the front as one port is USB C and the cameras are USB A. I do have adapters, but it's honestly a hassle if just plugging in the back works as well
Right! I would have left well enough alone if the darn sensors werent giving errors left n right lol
I'll look into the AliExpress cables then. My board has one USB-C on the back with a USB-A port right next to it, so it would be perfect for the active cable. Could I use the same game on both the PC and the VR headset itself or would I have to buy it on both platforms if I ever wanted to use the Quest standalone?
And thats one more reason to buy a good quality case and not some cheap chinese crap xD
Personally running an O11D and couldn't be happier 😄
But had to get them as the board only had I think 6 ports and after regular peripherals and basics that left nothing.
Yeah just wish I could get my friends to do the same. They have the whole select price low to high and pick the very first option......
I have built maybe 12 PCs using the STUPID cooler master q300 case.....
in the last year
One buddy was like can I fit a 4080 in here?.....like shut the fuck up dude.....
Oh nonono! Don't get us wrong! We were talking about USB controller crowding for the Rift CV1 and USB 2 speeds for the Quest. On USB3 anything really should work (as long as you don't plug in like 3 capture cards into the same controller)
Oops! Lol sorry @vestal pewter we was side nerding on ya lol
I know what you were talking about, dont' worry :)! I took a bit long to respond because I went back to doing what I was supposed to do haha. I just meant that the port layout would be perfect since the "data" port and the "power" port are right next to each other, I was concerned that it wouldn't reach and that I'd have to jerry-rig my power bank to somewhere
The cable doesn't have to be USB-C to C tho, so you got that right. Really, go with any decent quality USB 3 cable that plugs into the Quest. You just wanna make sure it's longer then 5m so you don't snag on it too much (6m if plugging in the back)
Just be aware that if you buy a cable with a dedicated PD in, you should connect the PD in to a proper USB-C PD powerbrick, like what comes with the Quest. Plugging that end into just another port on the PC won't do anything different from just getting a cable that doesn't have such a PD in in the first place 😉
I actually have one free USB-A port on the front, which would save me around a meter. The area where there's nothing to knock over is like 3x1.5m and starts like 75cm away from my tower
Yeah, with a playspace like that (which is similar to mine 😄 ) you'd want 5m if plugging in at the front, or 6m if pluggin in at the back. Out of my experience anything shorter will start pulling as you move away from the PC
And wont most boards only deliver 5v1a on regular ports? I dont think that will be enough 🙂
Def use a power brick
6m if at the back? Though makes sense, ~1.5 meters is spent to even get to the playable area and to the back of it it's another 3m and to get up to my head it's another like 1.8m I don't know if I need an active cable since the battery runtime of the quest probably exceeds my own runtime lol. I don't know if I could play beat saber for more than an hour or so. I've never experienced VR like that, so I can't really tell :)
5v 0.9A on USB 3.0 if they're following spec. 5v 1.5A if they support bc 1.2.
In my experience adding about an extra meter of cable fixes whatever cable length was eaten up by routing the cable to the back
Technically I could unplug my USB-C dock from the front port for playing in VR, I'd lose the LAN connection but our WiFi is faster than our upload and download speed anyway haha
Also do you recommend using separate headphones for the quest 2 or are the internal speakers of it okay? I have good headphones already
integrated is not bad however if you consider headphones you have to use earplugs
because over ear headphones wont wear well
oh, I don't like earplugs, so I'll just use the integrated speakers then or find some way to use my current ones (Sony XM5)
I also still need to make a decision on how to position my two speaker boxes, one is currently under a table so I don't hear the mids and highs coming out of it, they're both pointed towards me when I'm sitting down, will ask about that in the audio channel and provide a layout of my setup later when I'm back home
Earbuds will destroy any immersion. I can tell you that much. For good immersive audio you do want over-ear headphones or better yet off-ear speakers (tho the latter is kinda hard to do, unless you go with the crappy Logitech thing they released for the Quest 2).
In my experience overears generally fit well on most headsets, as long as the headstrap isn't a too bulky hard strap. Stuff like the included rubber strap on the Quest 2 should work with over ears no problem
With overears tho you do have to differentiate between closed-backs and open-backs. You do generally want open-backs for VR, not just for the better sound and cooler ears (open-backs don't heat up as much), but also for the sound stage.
Sound stage is imo what makes or breaks the audio immersion in VR, and you just can't beat open-backs (tho they also allow you to hear anything around you; which I personally see as a benefit tbh).
And no, Ambient Mode/Audio Passthrough is not a replacement for open-backs
What are ear-speakers? I think I'll see about the audio when I get the headset, thanks everyone for your advice!
The XM5's are closed-back, but have pass-through I could activate
ah didn't read it properly, you said off-ear speakers
Off-Ear speakers are like what you have on the Index. They are near-field speakers which are placed close to your ears, but not touching them or the surroundings in any way. They are by far the best for immersion you can get (if they are well tuned, which is where the logitch add-on for the quest falls short)
Passthrough ain't changing the sound stage of headphones tho :/
So for those you can just use them how you prefer them (ANC, Ambient, whatever). Ain't changing the immersiveness of the sound
Alright! Otherwise I have off-ear 2x120W speakers with 3 drivers each haha
(my speaker boxes that are pointing towards me)
but to get actual good stereo audio out of them with how they're placed, I would need to be laying down xD
No, off-ear speaker as in mounted to the headset close to the ears
Ig someone could hack together a solution to project virtual audio sources from VR games onto a surround sound system, if they know where each speaker is placed, but yeah... best to just stick with headphones lol
I know that these speakers wouldn't be suitable for VR :). They'd be immersive in the way that I'd feel the rumble of explosions in my whole body thanks to the great bass that these speakers have haha
😄
I can hear these things from outside if I crank the volume in Windows when I have the AVR on volume 4.5/10 haha. I've seen the AVR draw a peak of like 210W, though the actual peak power was higher, the device I used to measure that only measures in 15s intervals. They're 8 Ohm speakers and I've measured around 5V AC going through them at a normal loud volume when there was bass
though that was measured with just a multimeter. I kind of expected there to be more voltage than just 5V, but that makes it safe in case my cat ever chews on the wires while I'm listening to music. I'm gonna end it here since I'm drifting more towards audio
I'm honestly not sure how loud my sub can go. It's a budget sub, but still 10" 200W according the spec sheet. I run it at maybe half Gain on the sub itself with the Receiver set to a volume of 18 out of the maximum 74 (don't ask me why the volume scale is so arbitrary, ask Sony). Still one time I went and unplugged a headphone cable and the brief grounding of one of the speakers made quite a loud "thump" from the sub
Generally keep my audio volume pretty quiet as I can't stand loud noises...
I also keep the AVR at like 3.5 and Windows at 2%, which is pretty loud for just working, 10% is comfortable listening to when not working and 30-50 is for banger songs. 100% with 3.5 on the amp is for throwing a party and 4.5-4.8 is the max I'm comfortable putting it, these speakers are insanely loud already then and I don't know how much that rather old (could be 15y+, I have no clue tbh) AVR is able to handle long-term. I once got a thermal camera and pointed it inside the AVR and found three resistors apparently at 100°C while listening at normal volume
I also have to make sure not to crank the receiver all the way anyways (way too loud anyways)
350W is that the receiver is capable of in a 2 speaker config, the speakers themselves are rated for 150W max
yeah. My speakers can easily get to the kind of volume you get at a concert, but then you'd hear them from like a 10m radius around my house. I don't know what the AVR is capable of, the speakers say 170W nominal 120W music. The AVR was pretty hot when I had a bit of a rave with a friend and I had it on like 4. I don't wanna know how loud this thing could get, I don't want to blow the poor thing haha
It's some old one from sony
Then yours is definetly from a different generation. Mine is the STR-DH550 and like I said before, the volume is set as a whole number between 1 and 74...
Still has analog video plugs on the back, tho unfortunatly no analog to digital converter. Confirmed that when I plugged a Wii into it and got nothing out on the HDMI
I've tried measuring their volume, but my phone applies some clipping correction so that it always measures lower than what actually is, but I'd imagine they have no trouble reaching 100dB. My receiver also has no digital inputs, it's also pretty old as I've mentioned already. It also has a problem where every few months I have to drop it on the floor to get rid of some humming at multiples of the AC frequency here. I don't drop it from high, just from like 5cm
I'm kind of curious when this thing was released, will check that when I get home
waking up to 172 messages in the vr chat
we had a bit of a discussion, but at least it was helpful
so the claims of 50ppd on the crystal super are interesting
I'd like to see something like that come into a form factor like bigscreen beyond
no way it can beat in comfort
no specs on the fov for the pimax crystal super yet (that name sucks to type).
The Crystal Super QLED should be using the same panels as the Varjo XR-4, tho without the fancy lenses that Varjo has developed for the XR-4. If I had to guess the FOV would be a bit larger on the Crystal Super compared to the normal Crystal, but not massively so (it still needs to fit in the same form-factor after all). The Crystal Super OLED prolly will have a smaller FOV, given it has pancake optics and even in their renders the lenses were definetly smaller...
ya I'm more interested in ppd than crazy fov
I am currently waiting for my Bigscreen Beyond to ship but, do you think it would be better to cancel order, and get Crystal Light instead, then sell it and then buy Super? or have BSB with Crystal Super? cause BSB is surely hard to sell
I mean I'd stick with the bigscreen beyond personally its a lighter headset
I'm just wishing I could get whatever magic is in the pimax crystal super in the form factor of a bigscreen beyond.
We have no idea how good the pancake lenses from Pimax are going to be. But we do know that pancake lenses are quite a bit more difficult to design then aspheric or fresnel lenses, plus they are a lot easier to screw up...
Plus the BSB is certainly gonna be a better design for the components in it. The big benefit that pancake and microOLEDs give are the ability for smaller, lighter headsets, and the Crystal Super ain't either...
got to say I went from rift s to quest 3 and those pancake lenses / increase in res / ppd turned vr from a blurry vomitus mess into something playable for me.
