I write fiction for a living and research a lot of weird things and try to immerse myself in others' pov for the purpose of writing from the pov of characters not like myself. It screws up all the advertising algorithms, sometimes to comical effect. Once, Facebook tried to sell me a shirt that said, "Don't mess with this black woman."

So that's one way to deal with the data collectors. They have to know I write fiction though. I mean it's not like I don't also research book sales numbers and read my reviews and that sort of thing.
I wonder if they'll one day have a detailed enough algorithm to separate my interests from my characters' interests.
idc about data collection as long as I don't notice it in my daily life, through spam mail, spam calls, etc
Like will they, for example, know that it is not my character who is into VR, or that one of my characters is into motorcycles and not me.
I don't think AI can differentiate between the two
it will just see "you said/looked up VR, so we gonna spam you with VR"
I think spam calls are, for now, just part of life. My carrier does a pretty good job of differentiating spam from real calls. I wonder if they use my data to do that. (My carrier is google, lol.)
I keep getting reminded of that time my mother moved to a new house, and now 5 years later, still gets calls from internet and energy companies
because she told her friends through whatsapp and facebook
Idc about privacy, I only care about not being in pain
something they fail to do, so I just don't touch anything facebook related, including oculus
What's really disturbing is when your friend PMs you in facebook messenger to tell you about a traumatic childhood experience, then the next day you get ads for trauma counseling and you realize that this intensely private conversation is now part of facebook's data about you, and about your friend.
I don't even care about that level of stuff. as it doesn't affect me directly
it doesn't waste my time
or make me lock my phone in a closet because it just won't shut up
I haven't turned my ringer on in years, lol. I grew up before internet and cell phones when you had the right to not be available, and I never did give up that right. Just because someone decides they want to talk to me doesn't mean I need to stop what I'm doing.
bit to many things going on for me to do anything like that
I check my phone periodically, but I'd never get a single sentence of writing done if I paid any attention to notifications. I have killed every form of notification on my computer.
I basically just tell everyone who wants to contact me to either use telegram or discord, lel
also because I can actually see it on PC
barely ever use my phone
There are times when I am expecting a repairperson to call or something when I have to keep an eye on my phone. I'll put it face up on my desk while I work and only answer a call from the expected place. My family and friends text me or are on my discord server.
imagine having a desk, cri
Oh, yeah, I'm old. I spent my 20s and part of my 30s living in dorms or situations where I had little or no resources or space. I didn't get my first computer until I was in grad school. I was 29.
Had a bit of a rough start and started college late.
Still paying for it, lol. <--- American
probably not to rough
?
^^^
Oh...you are saying you don't think my rough start could have been very rough presumably because I landed on my feet eventually. Got it.
Well to answer your question about tv on VR... I sort of enjoy it. One problem is DRM keeping you from watching things like netflix on your headset. There are ways around it if you search for it.
thankfully idc about netflix
Not just Netflix is affected by the DRM, and not just streaming services either. Pretty much every legal way of watching movies or similar will be just a black box or forced to like 480p in VR, as the industry doesn't want people stealing that stuff. Outside of Free-TV (which isn't affected by DRM afaik), the only other way I know of is by ripping the movie/video off a Blu-Ray and thus getting access to a DRM-free version of the video file. Granted it often still contains what's called a "Cinevia Fingerprint", but that only means you can't burn it on a blank Blu-Ray and play it on a commercial Blu-Ray player
From my research, Plex is just a way of hosting your video/movie files on a server, to access them similar to a streaming service. It also has integrations for commercial streaming services, but I'm guessing it just overlays it's own player on-top of the (still) DRM-ridden video file streamed from such a service
Then again, I've never dealt with any proper VR streaming player thus far, as I found it much more comfortable to just watch whatever using BigScreen, recorded directly off my main monitor...
I've had problems with streaming services even using VR Desktop.
Which makes no sense to me. If I'm allowed to watch it on my desktop, why the hell shouldn't I be able to watch it on my headset?'
Because the way your desktop get's into VR is basically the same way as you'd stream your Desktop to Twitch: it's a screen-recording. These can't record any DRM protected content on a system-level.
On top of that, I believe most VR headsets don't even bother with implementing DHCP (the Quest doesn't have it for sure), which is a requirement for most DRM protected content. DHCP basically encrypts the video signal between your GPU and monitor, and prevents something like a capture card from intercepting the signal.
There are multiple revisions of DHCP, some of them have already been cracked, or were so weak that a simple splitter cable could defeat it (cough PS3 cough). The newest one, DHCP 2.2, is only found on 4k TVs and some 4k monitors and is required for 4k Blu-Rays any streaming services. It hasn't been cracked yet afaik...
Might just get one because I do want more than one display at times, but don’t want to buy a bunch of displays and fill my entire room for those few cases
What are all the bigger vr desktop programs/apps?
Just to see what that would be like
Quest has DRM since you can watch Netflix on it
Why do you need DRM to watch Netflix?
DRM is Content protection isn't it?
Protecting Netflix's content
Idk
All ik is you can't cast Netflix off your phone 🥲
Yeah, but you can bypass all of it and it's just a pain for consumers.
It would be funny to take a HDCP enabled TV board and plug it into a FPGA that outputs HDMI from the LCD driver.
Well, inside it's own OS, yeah ofc. What I was referring to using the Quest as PC headset. As the Oculus Software needs to essentially screen record a non-existent display for PCVR, it can't have DHCP. That only works for displays directly connected via DP or HDMI to the GPU...
If I'm not mistaken, then DHCP 2.2 includes the Display controller in the chain of encryption. Basically, it means that the data get's transferred as an encrypted signal from the GPU all the way to the chip that unwinds the image and sends it to the actual panel...
Considering that for most 4k content (which again requires DHCP 2.2) requires your CPU to support Intel SGX, so that it can create an encrypted channel between the GPU and the disc drive, I wouldn't be surprised if they took it all the way to the panel controller too...
The stuff switching the pixels can't be encrypted, otherwise you can't see the image.
Yeah, that's the stuff after the panel controller, ya' know, the thing that actually drives the pixels
But this is getting off topic
If you want to watch stuff like Netflix on your headset, just disable hardware acceleration in your browser

That'll limit you to 480p (or in some cases 360p). They won't give you anything higher res if they can't enforce their DRM
Or you can just buy disks of what you want.
You mean normal Blu-Ray or 4k Blu-Ray? 'cause the latter is secured with a truck load of DRM...
There are ways around this cough MakeMKV cough, but still...
That's legal as far as I know, not like you're redistributing it or selling it. You're just watching it on your computer.
Yup. But it's anything but consumer friendly (wouldn't have named that app, if it were illegal)
Only way to watch Netflix streaming it from another device is off Firefox as far as I know
like to screenshare on discord it has to be on Firefox, that’s the only browser that disables the protection thing or else it just shows up black
Isn't there a MakeMKV API? Maybe I could try to make a VR media player at some point just for fun.
it doesn't disable DRM. it's just that Firefox doesn't come with the necessary DRM measures for Netflix to give you the high resolution streams (1080p requires Chrome or Edge, and for 4k you need Edge)
That's disgusting.
480p on Netflix basically doesn't require any DRM, which is how you can stream on Firefox
Why do people still give them money?
Actually yeah. They offer a native interface to use it as a decryption engine system wide or just for specific supported players like VLC. Although, I have tried it, and while live playback works with some discs, pretty much all BD+ discs I've tried start lagging, or dropping out entirely after a few seconds...
Oh, really random.
Does anyone know if it's possible to run a wireless Vive setup when connected to the machine over RDP?
Man, DRM is such a pain in the butt.
ah ic
I think prime video looks better on chrome than Firefox so it’s probably doing the same thing
Another random thing, does anyone know if there's a way to plug a wireless Vive into the wall for development purposes? It would suck to cycle the battery a bunch with the headset idle while debugging.
I've given up on Prime Video. I tried it, in hopes of being able to stream HDR at 1080p, without having to pay like 20€/month to Netflix, but nope. All I got was some extremely heavy compressed videos that didn't even look good in SDR 1080p (not to mention the player at some point started having seizures on me xD)
That's when I started looking into ripping Blu-Rays, and honestly, the experience has been so much better then any Streaming service I've found so far. Yeah, It's a little more expensive going in, and not as convenient as just clicking play, but at least I get good image quality and HDR without having to go max tier and 4k... (my monitor is 1440p soo yeah)
streaming services are bad because they can't afford to send everyone 4k hdr content nor do they even offer it on all content
This is why I tell my family to use 4K BD disks on Plex, but there is a bottleneck somewhere? Movies stutter on the Apple TV 4K we got for cheap.
cpu?
Granted, a number of 4k Blu-Rays aren't actually 4k either, nor are all in actual HDR. Take all those old movies for example, of which the film got re-scanned with modern day equipment. Yeah, they may be 4k, but back in the day, they probably weren't going for the most dynamic range in the picture. A perfect example for this I saw in The Matrix (released 1999). Shadow detail in some scenes is super crushed, as if it's an SDR movie. Plus a lot of movies shot in the early 2010s were shot with 1080p or 2048p digital cinema cameras, meaning the actual movie doesn't have any more detail, thus any 4k Blu-Ray release of such a movie is upscaled. There's a good chart on what movie is real 4k and which ones aren't here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XgBqUDMwN-_CvbQssa7KVY_j56kimrgfePAH7i3dStM/edit#gid=583459674

can film get scaled to 4k? but it isn't hdr?
But that isn't for here.
There's a post about this on the MakeMKV forum. 4k Blu-Rays are encoded in a way that essentially requires hardware acceleration and quite a few horses. The Apple TV 4k probably has enough horses to decode whatever Apple and streaming services are throwing at it, but a 4k Blu-Ray is quite a bit more data. If your devices are struggleing with playback, you wanna re-encode the movie in a lower bit rate...
Morbius 4k 😈
I did set it to a lower bitrate, 20M maybe? The server should have enough grunt.
Since film is analog, it doesn't have an a specific resolution. Rather it has what's known as "grain", which specifies how fine the silver crystals inside the film can be in an exposed state. That'll determine roughly the amount of detail the film will be capturing. Usually for 35mm that's somewhere between 5k and 7k when speaking in digital resolutions
Yeah, once you get past 8k all you really do is get more grain which is super cool.
Some things on the smaller film are more like 4k with larger film much higher.
Does anyone know much about RDP + VR?
see if the cpu is getting to 99% and just calculate if internet etc. are fast enough
Yeah, wasn't modern 70mm Imax film like comparable to like 16k or 18k resolution?
Yeah something crazy like that.
I'm 99% sure Apple doesn't let you see that.
No?
It'll play 1080p for me just fine
I've done this plenty of times while watching things in VRChat
Works fine with things like Amazon Prime Video as well
Looks indistinguishable from running with hardware acceleration
@soft hound I think he was talking about Firefox
P. sure it's not 1080p then. Netflix auto-scales the resolution based on your browsers capabilities and your network strength. They won't show you 720p or 1080p without Google Widevine or M$ PlayReady DRM active
They won't even show you what you're currently seeing. There used to be like a hidden key-combo through which you could force a certain bitrate (and thus resolution), but even that hidden option only showed bitrates (and thus resolutions) that you were able to watch with your current setup...
(not to mention they removed it, as people were overloading Netflix servers through that way)
Well, whatever it is, it's definitely watchable
Not 480, that's for sure
Looks somewhere from 720p - 1080p
its 720p unless you are using widevine or whatever it is
Oh, they still have the players stats (which sometimes shows the resolution?) Ctrl + Shift + Alt + D
I haven't used Netflix in like a couple of years, so things may as well have changed, but that's how it was back in like 2018 (before the BBC removed all the good episodes of Top Gear)
Dunno what that DFR means. I was more referring to this line:
Alrighty then...
That bitrate tho... 1 Mbit/s for 720p 😬
(for reference, YouTube recommends at minimum 6 Mbit/s for 720p)
netflix is a shit company overall
you have to pay extra to not get 480p
that should not even exist.. 1080p is the standard and has been for years
wait really 😭
what-
i feel like thats only for barbershops to play some random crap on the TVs lmfao
lmao
What I find kindof funny is that I could watch netflix in VR back when I had a gear VR (there was an app), but I eventually had to get a new phone, so I lost that ability. Why the major streaming services haven't made steamVR apps is beyond me.
This explains why some people don't have any issue streaming netflix to their pc headsets.
Does anybody have any recommendations for good seated VR games? Ideally, not racing or flying games. I have a Quest 2, but don't currently have a space large to enough to play most VR games
Wow, really? Not even 720p? That really is BS. I pay for premium because I need the extra screens for my family, but if it wasn't for that, I'd be sticking with standard
Do you own a pc? Or just the quest
Ive been playing a game called The Climb that seems like itd be alright seated. If youve got a pc, Minecraft Java (i prefer modded but you can just run vanilla) and Skyrim can be played seated just fine
I own a PC. Lol. Not overly interested in Minecraft in VR (even though I do love the game), but I might check it out. Thanks. Zero interest in Skyrim though (VR or not). Lol
You can do minecraft Java in VR natively? I thought only bedrock had native VR support
Bedrock vr is dead rn, its not native but theres a program you can use with regular modloaders or the main client
The page for bedrock vr addon exists but i couldnt find a way to download
I've always just used minecraft bedrock in vr natively w/o mods or add-ons, through Oculus
I didn't know something happened to it, I used it less than a month ago
Lemme go find the name of the program. You can play vanilla java easy. You run the program and it sets up a specific profile in your launcher, like modloaders do
Called Vivecraft
Maybe try it and see if it still lets you play? From what i can find on forums and stuff it was just recently taken down. Maybe by mistake but idk.
Wonder if i can sideload it somehow...
(On quest) I would think you can sideload MC(android) but it'd just be the flat experience
Can't you connect KBM/Controller to quest for that kind of stuff?
Idk. If i sideloaded it id wanna do the bedrock addon specifically since i can already play java.
In bedrock, can your friends see you move normal if your in vr and they arent? Vivecraft has mods your friends download to smooth out how they see you
By default, no I don't believe so
I like the vivecraft mods that do that tho lol
I think the main catch to Vivecraft multiplayer, is that you need to host the server. If your friends dont wanna install the mods, they can still see you. Just super choppy so you wouldn't wanna pvp a vr player or anything like that without the mod. I could be wrong on that though. I havent tried it. But i feel thats a fair drawback for something like this.
Modpacks have been fun though. Keybinds can get weird twords mid/endgame since you have less keys. I think you can hook up a keyboard but idk
ikr
Honestly, if anything, it should be 720p not 480p
Gigabyte is a stupid company
their support is so trash it might as well not exist
and their software is utter garbage
10 FPS VR?
I will avoid them at all costs now
The smoothest experience wdym??
10fps is soooo much!!
Be grateful
never tried VR, but I would expect 2060/2070 to be recommended minimum, lel
still looking into VR and if it is something that could be of use..
considering it is more compact than getting like 5 displays and a large TV
Is there any way to make a VR optimized graphics card? If that makes sense
probably
I wonder how well something like that would sell
🤷♂️
Imagine having two gpu's in one card to render the image for each eye
that would suck probably
I think the main differences between flat and vr is how the image is processed in terms of like higher res in the center lower around the edges, 2 renderings going st the same time, etc
that might work if you could get them to equalize
would likely just make one side ahead of the other
otherwise SLI would've been used long ago, lel
Like @haughty thistle says if they get out of sync or higher fps then the other or whatever that could be a problem
and holding them back would be like vsync adding latency
hopefully nvidia or amd looks into it tho that gives SLI a greater new purpose
SLI is dead
😭
Depends on the game and what their standard for recommended is. My gtx 970 can play lower end games like skyrim and Minecraft to my Quest 1 well enough
I have two of their motherboards, a b550 aorus elite and one x370 gaming K7 and I'm really happy with them.
A 970 is more powerful than a 1050 non ti
50 is significantly less powerful than it's 60 counterpart
1050
Not the most scientific measurement but it gives an idea
Here's the 970
Good to know.
Here is the 1060 the bare minimum for VR, the 1050 is less than half of it's power. Plus it has only 2 gb of VRAM compared to 4 on the 970 or 3/6 gb on the 1060
Hate to dig up this question, but the game "I expect you to die" and it's sequal are both pretty good seated VR puzzle games 🙂
I'll add it to the list to check out. Thanks. Which platform is it on?
The first one I belive was only ever released for PC, and I belive the second part might be on the Quest Store? I'm unsure, but I recommend buying stuff on Steam if it's available there anyways, as you can still play those games, even if you leave the Oculus Meta eco-system 🙂
Pro tip... Don't buy the larger storage oculus... You won't ever use it all...
even more true if you dont play games on it and instead stream from a pc
Now that the standard is 128 it's plenty of storage
Yeah but I mean there are few games that even take up any real amount of space anyway
970 was the original SteamVR minimum, but they moved it up a little as things progressed.
Moving from 970 to 2080ti was amazing.
Whereas from 2080ti to 3080 was a slight improvement. If you are still on a 970, you could double or even maybe triple that score without resorting to a flagship.
The goal is to upgrade before the end of the year. I wanna throw this 970 in my server anyway so i can properly host plex instead of having it split between 2 machines
Imma probably need to get a new case too though. I dont like thermals in the system as is, much less with a hotter card
Unless i magically win this Jayz2cents giveaway then ill be set for a bit lol
does anyone have a fix for amd graphics cards and vr with quest 2
because at the moment its really bad there stuttering tearing and really bad lag
info: I'm currently running a RX 6700xt and a rysen 5600x with 16gb of ddr4
the drivers haven't been fixed in months
am at the point of sneaking into my sister's room and switching GPU's jk
Does Adrenalin 21.8.2 or 21.8.1 work fine?
Its an older driver which fixed some odd issues with my config.
its the last suggested driver from Virtual Desktop
thanks ill give that a shot
There are alos a number of issues with the Quest and Windows 11 that have yet to be fixed, so that may also be a problem. Just mentioning it 🙂
Honestly my experience w/ Q1 & RX 5700XT and USB2 speeds is pretty good LOL
There's stuttering when going from game to oculus/steamvr menu, but during the game it's pretty good
100% playable
Yeah, but the Quest 1 is also hard-limited to 150Mbit/s due to it's SOC. The Quest 2 can go up to 500Mbit/s, but what is generally considered stable is around 250Mbit/s. And you'll need those, as the higher panel resolution means you also need to supply a higher resolution before the upscaling blur get's to a level where it's not too distracting...
Fair
i just looked it up and the reason my quest 2 doesn't discharge when plugged into my 2070 virtualink port is because it provides a whole 27 watts
that's pretty cool, it's a shame they got rid of it
not even just for vr you could just use it to charge your phone while at your desk
So I've got a customer looking for a cheap computer to play VR on. Their friend is selling a Rift S for cheap and they wanna have a computer capable of running it for under $500.
Uhhhh idk abt that, at least not the greatest performance
Now in that price range I'm kind of limited. The best I've been able to do so far is a dell optiplex system off of ebay with a GTX 1070 slapped into it
The specs would be an I7-8700K, 16gb DDR4 2133, a 500gb SSD, and a 1070. The final price comes out to something like $530 which I think they'd take but only if that setup would be sufficient for what they wanna do
In terms of games, they wanna play half life alyx, beat saber, and superhot. I asked about vrchat and they said they don't like social games like that so they're unlikely to try it out
That hardware setup is above the recommended minimum for all 3 of those games but I still wanted to come here and converse just to make sure
that ram speed is lacking and double check the power supply wattage on the optiplex
otherwise it should be fine, the most demanding of those 3 games, alyx, ran ok on my mobile 1060 6gb, so a desktop 1070 should be fine
The price is factored with a replacement psu. ram is what comes with it. I could swap it out for a 2666 kit I've got laying around but anything more than that and I'd have to further raise the price
fair
The prebuilt I'm working off of is $375 but goes on sale for $350 occasionally and comes with two workstation GPUs already in it. I'd be keeping the two GPUs, the old psu, (and maybe the memory if I choose to replace it) to resell, which brings the price down. chuck in a 1070 and an SSD and hopefully it should be good enough for what they wanna do with it
Those specs seem fine for VR on a Rift S
I am a bit confused as to why a prebuilt with what appears to be an H110 board has a K-skew CPU in it but whatever I guess.
RAM speed is more of a performance factor on Ryzen then it is on Intel, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Yeah, it's bottom of the barrel when it comes to DDR4, but it still should be fine
It's Dell. Only their monitor department is actually capable of pumping out decently specced out products...
and their gaming pc department, but its still plagued by their "quality" issues
You seen GNs recent videos about the Dellienware Aurora? That thing was plagued with issues. Really, the only good thing I've seen come from Dell were monitors, whether Alienware branded or not, they're usually decent if not really good
the specs can be good, the quality never is
so I've made an error
it doesn't actually say 2133 anywhere in the listing I was looking at, it was another listing I was remembering. The base memory speed for this model is actually 2666 already
a bit slower than id like, but that should be just fine
especially for the price, cant complain
ok here's one that's interesting
The listing I was looking at was for an 8700K in a board that you probably can't overclock on anyway, with two 2gb Radeon Pro WX2100 GPUs in it. Only storage is a 1tb HDD, and 16gb of memory. All for between $350 and $375. But there's a second listing I just found with an 8700 non-K, a single 4gb WX3100 (which is basically the same as both of the cards in the other system combined) but it already has a 512 SSD installed AND it's only $320.
go ssd
So I wouldn't even have to get a new SSD, and it's losing its already nonexistent overclocking support but I don't think the customer would care. one card would also be easier to resell than two identical cards. I think this one's the play
You don't know what the SSD has been through tho. Personally I wouldn't trust any of my data with a used SSD, but you do you
from the photos, it's a kioxia drive, manufacture dated to December 20th 2019.
Yeah, if something is available on both Steam and Oculus/Meta, I've been getting the Steam version. Lol. The only thing I've bought on Oculus so far is the Vader Immortal trilogy
Went back to HL-Alyx and I had completely forgotten how incredibly good it looks and smoothly it runs
Felt like I was playing VR for the first time again
Can you still run Oculus stuff on PC?
Hi
I've been trying to connect my quest 2 to pc through both oculus airlink and link but when I enable oculus link or launch it on my vr headset , it is stuck on the 3 dots screen, been trying many things such as reconnecting, restarting, factory reset and updating my gpu drivers and repairing or updating the oculus app drivers nothing worked and experienced all possible problems while trying those fixes such as 3 dots screen, oculus link app crashing on start and the headset not being seen in oculus app
I really hope someone can help me fix this
Are you running Windows 10 or 11?
That's odd... This issue is usually reported with Windows 11...
Yea , had some discussions about it and it may be because of my gpu
That would be the easiest and most logical fix
To upgrade my gpu
Yeah, probably a driver issue
Nah, I run a 6500XT, oculus site does say the RX6500 will not work perfectly but idk if the XT one counts too
I‘ve downgraded to the recommended driver for gpu and put my oculus app into public test version
I've only seen AMD not being supported at all
That'd depend on what GPU you already have. The "stuck on 3 dots" issue usually means that Link couldn't launch
AMD is supported by Metabook, just not as well as Nvidia is (because Cuda)
It kept crashing and loading while I tried fixing it this time
No other results
And AMD gpu‘s are support for oculus link
Just the RX6500 is said to not be good for it
I honestly hope VR doesn't end up like consoles
exclusive controllers, games, etc
so you can never actually use what you want
one controller being better, one headset being better, but the games aren't on it
hope metaverse and such end up failing, lol
The only company rn working towards an open XR eco-system is Valve. Yeah, there's the OpenXR initiative, but most companies in it seem to not be really interested in making it easier for the consumer. Especially Metabook, who're in this initiative for some reason...
as long as VR has as many components as it does, you can't get the best from a single company (trackers, controllers, headsets, etc)
would suck if at one point, quest is all you can use if you want to join the 95% because of a single game/program
That's the goal of Metabook. Not an XR space that is free and open and pro-consumer, but one that only they have control over. Rn the XR space is on the best track to mimic the web browser landscape of the 90s...
aren't there laws against that tho
would be a lot better if instead they just made a subscription based service for meta software instead
and make it exclusive that way
and try to be the main VR "launcher"
Laws only actually work if they are enforced, and rn, nobody (and I literally mean nobody) who has the power to drag companies like Meta in front of court is actually paying attention to the XR market, 'cause ya' know, it's too small of a market to draw any conclusions yet...
I mean, they do it with literally everything tho
I trust china more with my data than facebook
because at least it won't be actively used against me
not better for me either, but not making things obnoxious
tbh, I can't think of any company, person or whatever I trust less with my personal info than facebook
also, yes they changed names, but who cares
I can: literally any government. 'cause their only use for user data is to throw out political enemies. China and the Middle East are two perfect examples of this
And it's happening in the US to a certain degree as well (cough Epstine cough)
idc how they use it, as long as it doesn't change my personal life, lel
aka, selling my phone number to companies...
even if they wanted to record me without me knowing 24/7 and sell that, idc
and to be fair, they are to deep in the budget-midrange to make me even think about ever getting them, in combination with those controllers and so on (and well... wireless ain't for me yet on electronics with higher bandwidth needs)
I avoid budget-midrange, if I am spending hundreds to thousands anyway that is
2.5-5k more like it
i just got vtol vr and iron wolf vr and they're both a lot of fun
especially iron wolf
Oh yeah I’m considering getting that. Put it in my cart and forgot to check out
Oof 7 hours from now the sale would have ended
has anyone else had problems with AMDs latest drivers not working with oculus VR?
like it still "works" but some games crash and others run fine but the oculus home is wonky and shifts all around.
which gpu do you have?
hey everyone, what is the best VR kit for AMD right now? I have a 6700XT, ASUS B550-F MOBO, 5800X3D CPU and 128gb ram.
try rolling back your driver..
its good, its fine, overkill, super duper overkill like jesus christ thats 10x as much as is needed
yeah.. but I figure might as well build it like i wanted
shrug
AMD RX 400/500: 20.10.1 https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-20-10-1
AMD 5000/6000: 22.4.2 https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-22-4-2
Those are the latest drivers suggested by Virtual Desktop because after that, especially for 400/500 amd really screwed them up and has yet to fix them properly
I'd say 5800X3d, x570 taichi, rtx 3090ti kingpin, very fast ram like some TX 3600 cl14, everything watercooled and you should have the fastest gaming PC for VR. Not that i would really recommend it as these parts aren't necessarily useful for gaming...
@wispy orchid Thanks, I hope they fix it soon
Cleaning my lighthouses didn't help tracking.
Soooo... something like this should work:
just joking lol
lol i know, its not my picture... not my pc either. That thing couldn't even start to keep up with todays games.
The worst part has to be the cooling
lol right?
I have DDR3 in my VR machine.
What might be a decent used Nvidia card for VR?
It really depends on the headset and price range
Used? 1080 or 2070 should be perfect
I have a Vive.
Maybe I'll grab a 1080 Ti for extra room.
Any particular AIB I should look for?
2060 can run alot of vr titles
but you have quite some head room if you get a 3060 ti or 3070
im no expert though in the low end that much anymore
I suppose RTX cards would be nice just for the RT stuff.
Would be fun to play with.
I guess they are around the same price, ish.
i don't think there are any vr titles that use ray tracing
i have a 3070 ti and in most games in 1440p its still a huge performance hog
There is a 12GB 3060?
i think so
yeah 3060 has 12gb of vram for no reason
a 3070 (ti) would be better suited
because 1440P
you can always do something like vorpx and make a ray tracing game work in vr ;p
i guess
a 3060 ti does the job pretty well
550 for a EVGA XC3 Ulta?
There are 5 games on that list that I have played.
Sheesh.
sheesh
I wonder how the 3060 compares to the 960.
lol
true
what vr headset you got?
.
The Vive.
nice lol
much easier to run then a modern headset with it's 1080 x 1200 res per eye
true
you can get away with a much slower gpu then what you will need for a more modern one
but if you ever plan on upgrading to a newer vr headset or also like to play non vr games you should get the best gpu you can within reason instead of going really cheap to match what you would need for the vive
It's not like I use 4K or anything.
a better gpu will let you do some super scaling resolution in vr games as well and that will help the visuals some when it downsamples to the vr's display
Or I could just keep it at native and use less power.
true, but you may not want to go back after testing it.
If I never test it I will never know. :-P
although if valve is still doing this you may already be seeing it in some steam apps
I think I have it manually set to 60% right now anyway.
Maybe not that low.
But I turned a lot of the auto stuff off so it would do less things.

Which actually made it work better.
these people seem to think a 2080 super would let you do about 150%
so anything faster/newer then that would be able to do more
I have a 6900XT and have my index set to 200%, not that it means much
I'm sticking with NV for now.
You know you f'ed up, when the response of your community makes it into the news: https://www.pcgamer.com/vrchat-is-being-review-bombed-to-hell-and-back-after-anti-cheat-announcement/
I remember a game where they instead added official mod loader, supporting mods, even supporting cheating mods that add extra buttons, waypoints, etc
like, its vrchat, its an app to socialize
its not a friggin competitive game jfc
"oh no, characters can move in the air" to do what? look up skirts and down dresses?
if I were them I would just be like "I am lazy, I'll let y'all do the work for me"
they already have a super active community that makes amazing things, they should just capitalize on it like minecraft
EAC actually isn't meant for that. They say it's to prevent malicious clients. Only problem is, that they exclude people who relied on mods not to make the experience better, but to make it actually usable. I'm speaking ofc about deaf people and people with limited vision and speech impairments...
reminds me of this game
basically needs mods, can play without, but has issues like broken UI
In-fact, a lot of people who like to tinker with their OS and software in general will probably be prevented from running the game. Had an Anti-Cheat system call me a cheater in the past because I had Docker installed. For those who don't know, Docker is an Industry standard to run small applications in their own encapsulated environmets...
could imagine people quitting ig
I only know "men look like women, and mute themselves to fool others"
I'm neither against mods not for them. I personally don't use any. But if EAC lables me a cheater, I guess there's nothing I can do but to look elsewhere. I use my machine for coding too, and if a game doesn't like that, then I won't like that game
That’s pretty funny how they outraged an entire community lol
like with Minecraft and the reporting system
I think someone needs to make a FOSS version of this.
Especially with the malware.
Like, that's insane.
The reporting system is stupid.
Day one people automated mass submitting reports.
Imagine if Valve were to just de-list VRC for a bit to cover their own asses. A game on their platform suddenly getting super negative attention after an update never looks good to outsiders, even if they didn't had anything to do with it...
That's an oof, my review was caught in a filter.
Yeah, Valves anti-bombing system is in full effect already
This is a legitimate review. :-)
Yeah, but after multiple cases where a game got bombed just for the lulz, Valve did implement a system that throws any review into a review loop, if the game's reviews suddenly shifted in the last like hour or so, and especially so if the user has barely any play time in that game...
Mine for example went straight through:
I haven't played much because I haven't managed to get an avatar ported yet.
As you can see, I have quite the playtime in that game. Taking a break for a few days doesn't mean much to me, as I haven't played it a lot recently anyways. It does say 21h in the last two weeks, but that's because I was tweaking things on my world and avatar and had the game running idle for quite a while because of that...
I should go post a similar review on another game I installed the other day, I did manage to remove the malware at least.
Oh boy! Valve has already stepped in
Now if they just direct that moderation at the right people, that'd be great
My review should be fine, I'm not harassing anyone.
I stated a fact and my recommendation.
kept mine short to help prevent it from being flagged
What does that anti cheat do
I’ve known some that autoban anything that seems suspicious, even if its just “to consistent movement”
Anti-Cheat basically tries to detect any intrusion into the application, causing unwanted behaviour. That includes, but is not limited to, changes to the main game files, changes to values in memory, preventing applications with the ability to modify memory space from running, etc.
They often cause more colateral damage then they actually help. One major thing they generally prohibit is the use of a VM to run the game, as with a VM, they can't fully prevent memory alterations. So as a safety precaution they refuse to work on a VM.
In the case of VRChat, they'd just use the Anti-Cheat to prevent the game from launching if any anomalies have been detected. They won't ban you for those tho...
they should allow it, even actual modded places, that require a mod to work properly, for custom made games inside of it imo
don't they allow nsfw in private places actually
Yeah, but for a good reason. There are minors on the platform, and i'm not talking about 13 yo quest kiddies
My only complaint about the change is that EAC is essentially a root kit, and thus an inherently a security hole...
VRCs age limit is 13 years. But anything between 13 and 18 should be considered minor. While a 17 yo may already behave pretty adult like, it doesn't change the fact that by law, they're not allowed to participate in NSFW stuff
I don't even consider 25 year olds as adult
It get's really hard from a legal standpoint to moderate between 18+ and under 18. So it makes sense for them to just ban it outright. Which tbh I fully support. If you want $€/, then just do it irl for god's sake...
Maybe I should reinstall that other thing just to see how big the rootkit is.
Might be interesting to throw it in Ida.
Eh, I'm not good enough at RE for that yet.
sitting here in front of a bbq restaurant for the past 30 minutes waiting for someone from OfferUp to come buy this new quest 2 elite strap
now rethinking my life
So I've come up with an idea
It's occurred to me that there's literally no reason for my sister to be using an oculus quest 2
She only cares about PCVR, never actually uses it standalone which is where it performs the best, constantly complains about having to charge it and how long it takes to get it set up to play
So I'm thinking... Why don't I just gift her a reverb G2? It'll literally just be a better experience in every way, and I can take the quest off her hands to experiment with it. I travel a lot, and not needing to tie my Facebook account to it or mess with PCVR connectivity would be an okay use case I think
She also complains about having to use earbuds, which the reverb's speakers would solve
The time to set up is a pain that's for sure
What's the difference in fov between the quest 2 and the reverb g2 I wonder
knowing that the quest 2 will have a price increase and I've wanted to dive into VR for a time now
- should I pull the trigger?
- do I need a link cable to play on PC or is the wireless mode good enough?
- is there a better option at the same price range?
- yes if you absolutely need the wireless feature, this ties into #3
- the link cable helps a lot, airlink kinda sucks imo but virtual desktop is pretty good
- the hp reverb g2 can be bought for like $350 on ebay but it takes more power from your pc because of the higher res, and it doesn't have wireless
If you're dead set on buying a quest 2 and nothing else, then this is the best time to do it. You don't need a link cable to play on PC, the wireless performs about on par with the link as long as you have a proper Internet setup in my experience. If you don't care about wireless and only ever plan on using it tethered to your PC and don't have any interest in using it standalone, then I'd advise against getting a quest 2 and either waiting for a future headset or picking something else
The reverb g2 is the obvious choice for relatively well priced good quality dedicated PCVR, but they're $600 brand new so unless you're good buying used, it's a hard decision to make
thanks for the opinions, I'm interested in the stand alone part and in trying VR in general so I think I'll use the price increase as a good enough justification for buying it...
also I'm not from the US and in my country would be very easy to flip it used for almost the same price as new if I don't like it since nobody sells it here
is there any new offerings on the market?
budget of sub $800 cad, currently have a q2, but the oculus link compression makes it pretty ehhh for the games i play (mainly dcs and warthunder)
was thinking maybe the g2 but didn't like the controller much
not really
what actually is the best sub 3000, lel
as in Nvidia cards?
no, because that's easy
just in terms of VR, what is the best you could do with 3000
(wouldn't ask here anyway about GPUs if I were somehow not capable of thinking "3090 TI costing 2000$, beats another GPU from the same brand that costs 1/4th")
technically euro, but the amount stays the same because import tax
True
not even the PC itself, got a 5000$ budget for the PC upgrade next gen, lel
just reached the end of what I need, so now I am just getting what I want/feel like would help with certain things
Personally if I already had a pc that ran everything wonderfully, and had a good budget I would go all out on peripherals
But that's just me
I'm going to sleep now ✌️
with the budget I set for everything, my entire setup would cost me 25k
ordered 1200$ worth for custom keyboard, so its not like I've been cheaping out anywhere
basically overkill on everything so I can save up for multiple years after
cheaper to spend a few hundred more from the start, lel
There's no standalone vr that can be bought for the price of a q2, so if you want to play games that are simple or optimized for the quest then you don't even need a PC, so beat saber, pistol whip, super hot, vrchat too even if it's killing itself with dumb decisions. But while those games can be good, it's not powerful enough to even try things like boneworks or HL:Alyx. If you do play with PC I suggest using Virtual Desktop, it gives you more settings and less trouble compared to AirLink or even the cable because oculus can make a good headset for cheap but they can't handle two devices communicating. So in that case ideally you'd want a cheap router dedicated to the quest in the same room, though in many instances it's not necessary, like with me and my Comcast aio. Also I suggest getting a third party facial interface that cools better, i got a kiwi design version.
But honestly even if the g2 is a bit better, it's also not because you need to connect it with wires.
Q2 price is also going up soooo
Sucks as I'm planning to get one in october
My other option, the G2 i heard has shitty tracking.
And is pcvr only
The tracking on the G2 really isn't that bad...
And because it's PCVR only, it's PCVR experience is waaay superior to that of the Quest. The truth is, anything that tries to do multiple things at once, can never be good at any of them. Perfect example of this rule are 2in1 laptops. Neither particularly good laptops, nor particularly good tablets
still better than 99% of android tablets tho
yeah but it'll be cool if i like can play VR on the go
which is what the quest 2 can do
lots of people on reddit and stuff saying it's much inferior ro Q2 tracking
and no wireless which sucks
ew wireless
I've had both a Quest and a G2, and can say from personal experience that it's absolutely usable. It's not the WMR tracking of the early days, and it's certainly not the Vive Cosmos Tracking
Wireless on the other hand is a nice to have, not something that is absolutely necessary. I'd much rather take the way superior image quality and native resolution of a cabled PCVR headset, over something that has an inherent delay due to image en- and decoding...
I wouldn't want wireless just because I do not trust wireless with electronics that require a lot of data
keyboard, mice, controllers, etc are fine
a display, no
five years of chickenbread is typing... later
in a few days
Frankly, PCVR on the Quest in general sucks. But mostly because it doesn't have a native display in. If it had that, then at least the wired experience would be decent.
The only decent wireless VR solution I've tried so far is the Vive Wireless Adapter on the Vive Pro. But it's A. expensive, B. Power hungry and C. has limited bandwidth for accessories. Wanna have a face tracker and use your own headphones? Not enough bandwidth unfortunately. Because it's using 60GHz Wifi to get enough bandwidth in the first place, it also requires somewhat of a line of sight to the base antenna. It's not as bad as with an optical solution (no direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver = no signal), but you'll be able to tell if you're leaning forward too much with your back to the antenna (image get's pretty low resolution to cope with the reduced bandwidth)
Hah! Got my message out before you send yours! xD
it's only bad if you have shitty router providing the connection
nah you didn't
You just edited your post above and deleted the other one. That's cheating
smh
have you ever played a VR dating sim
That's... and odd question
why
there are enough people in their 80s who've never experienced it, trying it out in VR instead
80s? How old you think I am?!
23-27
I am 598 yo
VRChat drinking?
Nope
roleplaying?
Not even that
any form of
I'm a pretty boring bloke, I know
earning 100k annually ?
I wish 😂
10k?
Although, I guess in some currencies, that should be doable. The 100k I mean...
I would also be a millionaire in some countries probably
and it has funny word for the masses
xD
how to earn a million per hour:
okay, then do you have a VR headset
if yes can you gift it to me
and if the answer is yes and no in that order, please tell me which the best one is, out all consumer grade stuff, lel
Maybe?
No.
Varjo Aero. At least when it comes to the headset alone. It's not a very budget headset tho...
would be willing to spend 3k total
on the headset and stuff needed
The headset alone is 2k. Factor in another 600 bucks for lighthouses and controllers
Plus a good headset with a short 4-pole audio cable is recommended too. The one I have is the Sennheiser GameOne. It's successor (Sennheiser PC38x) is still available, for I belive 130$...
what about 1000$ iems?
that I do know
why do you need it tho
would probably just stick on a modmic, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Social VR titles, like VRC, CVR or Neos? VC in games like Pavlov?
Some people did, but always keep in mind that it's extra cabling and weight
I don't even speak english is one issue tho
wireless exists
weight
its called neck training, not weight
something I do honestly need, lol
how big is the difference between an Oculus Quest 2 headset and a HTC Vive
From what I understand the Vive has less latency and that's one of the most important things in VR.
Less latency, a sharper image (as you actually get native resolution in PCVR) but in the case of the OG Vive or even the VP1 less detailed image (due to a lower physical resolution). The OLED screens of the VP1 and OG Vive also have way better contrast and color fidelity. I personally say it'd be worth it. Plus you may also get a higher FOV, due to how the IPD adjustment works on the Vive vs the Quest 2
Oh, and not to mention the better tracking on the Lighthouse enabled headsets
Oh yeah they have backwards tracking.
I'm thinking my tracking issues might be some sort of weird occlusion thing.
Is it possible to get the lighthouses to stay off after a power outage?
Not that I know off?
You could use smart plugs, but those may not allow the lighthouses to properly spin down?
whats the difference between quest 2 USA and the JPN model
probably one supports 500kg weight, one doesn't
no idea, just a guess
the only thing I can imagine is "larger"
or "supports fat blobs"
ah yes
your head, where the largest fat reserves are
but yeah if there is a difference its probably bigger
probably none though
have you see the cheeks of an obese person?
jeez
fr
Anyone knows a bit about the rift s ?
I am having some drift with my controler and was wondering if it is a known issue?
(cause I know the microphone is trash and known to go full robot too and i now use my headset over instead
sad to see no one has the same headset as me lel
@haughty thistle are those all working? Why 2x Q1?
Wut?
You mean my headset collection?
Yea
Yeah, they're all working. An no, I don't have multiple Quest 1s. Look closelier, because one is a CV1 🙂
Does steamvr work with linux?
Yes
Just make sure the headset you have works natively with SteamVR, as the additional software most headsets require won't work on Linux
(p.s. SteamVR on Linux is kinda jank; depending on your distro it may work better or worse)
You can use the Linux port of ALVR. But ALVR is kinda jank to begin with, making the jankness of the setup even more jank 😄
Does anyone know if it's possible to setup Steam VR to use a dummy HMD without preventing me from having to constantly change settings?
Can the 3050 mobile do vr with the quest 2? I’m not planning on playing any super demanding games or anything, I’m just curious if It would be better than the standalone quest 2
I think it's not that different in performance to a 1060 desktop, so it should be ok. You can do some more intensive stuff too, just be warned it's not going to be amazing. Like you should get a playable experience out of half life: Alyx, but not something like boneworks. I had a 1060 mobile and it was... Tolerable. Though if you do something like beat saber with mods then it should be great.
Are you talking abt the 6gb or 3gb 1060?
6gb
Ok, thanks. Good to know
I mean, worst case it's not a bad headset, and you can still play standalone
it depends on cooling and power limits etc of the specific laptop too so kinda just have to try it out for a concrete answer
It’s this one to be specific
I plan to upgrade the ram to 16 gb dual channel
I don't like that it doesn't show what cpu it has
I’ll try to check into that
It’s mainly going to be for school so it’ll probably suffice
my 10300h and rtx3060 has been doing me good so far in its 1st year
I'm gonna be honest, due to the inherant inability to upgrade the CPU and GPU in this laptop I'm going to suggest spending more and getting more. It's not a great CPU, you should honestly have 16gb of ram in 2022, and the 3050 is only about as powerful as a 1060, so if you got something used you probably could get more performance easily.
or a 3060 which is basically a desktop 2060
The 3060 is a good card, the 3050 is ok, but could get the exact same performance out of an older model.
I was considering used but battery life is a big issue with used laptops and I’m not sure if I want to hunt down a replacement battery
Eh gaming laptop battery life sucks new anyway
^ you can probably get a 12th gen with 3060 for an extra 100~$
i only chucked a 16gb ram and 2tb samsung 970 for the upgrade
The laptop hes looking at is $600
o sh
The laptop is on sale for 550 and anything I’ve seen with a 3060 is considerably more
i would like to have a desktop for vr and use the acer nitro for streaming but ehhh
i assumed like 8-900
That’s the non sale price
got no clue whats this in aud
Well if you don't have more to spend, I can't say there's any options at that price point for new for the same specs
But I would very much suggest adding more ram to 16gb. I don't know if one or both dimm slots are populated, though I'm assuming it only comes in 8/16 versions and since OEMs like saving money and effort, they'll only stock 8gb sticks (translation: I'm guessing there should be only a single 8gb stick inside and an additional open slot you can throw in a second stick, just opening it up will tell you if I'm right or not)
That’s what I’m planning on
It says under the “asked questions” tab that there’s a single 8gb stick and it can be easily upgraded to 16
Whatever Laptop you end up getting:
I highly recommend putting the Laptop in a Tent setup while gaming VR. You won't be able to use the trackpad or built-in keyboard, nor will you be able to see the built-in screen, but when you're in VR, you won't need any of those
A laptop in a Tent position has as much access to air as it possibly can, and it does lead to mearuable better cooling (usually) and thus better performance (as laptops are pretty much always limited by how well their cooling system can keep the components cooled)
Kinda like this:
Interesting, thanks for the tip
And ofc, make sure the Laptop is plugged in and fully charged. That'll give the hardware the highest power budget the BIOS is willing to give to the silicon 🙂
setting the fans to 100% will also also allow it the highest thermal budget it has
though of course it will sound like someone is trying to fly an rc toy
Lmao
It won’t bother me that much since I already play vr with a fan blowing on me to combat getting all sweaty from beat saber
yeah, but laptop fans are much whineyer and annoying
The movie We Met in Virtual Reality just came out on HBO Max. I saw it at Sundance, and recommend anyone who likes VR see it soon.
it's on my watch list ❤️🔥
Is there any good headsets for motion sickness?
Like vr sounds fun but I’ll get motion sick playing like portal or super monkey ball
(If I did buy one I’d get the index)
None specialize in preventing motion sickness, but you’ll likely want to avoid inside-out tracking as it’s less accurate and can be a bit more jittery in certain conditions.
Just be prepared to return the device if you can’t handle it. Nausea is really a per-person thing with VR. I know friends who can handle any 2D game but can’t do VR, and I know people who are the opposite
Basically, if it has cameras on the headset for tracking your head in 3D space, it's inside-out tracked. That includes most options these days unfortunatly. Headsets like the Quest 2 and Reverb G2 are inside-out tracked, whereas the Index is Outside-In tracked
The quest uses cameras inside the device to figure out where you are. The index has stations you mount around you to see where you are
Oh okay yeah I’d want the stations anyways
It’s overall a better experience
(apparently a typo made the bot upset >.<)
Idk anymore. The bot keeps flagging me...
Set your Index to 144Hz. It does help with motion sickness 🙂
And reduce game settings & render resolution in SteamVR to actually hit 144fps
i mean i got my eyes checked at the optician and they said i had the eye distance of 58 but i can very comfortably play with the default 61/62 and see everything clear
and i got sick in the car alot but i kinda grew over that
so i guess you can get used to vr sickness and grow over it a bit
like 2d on a monitor, sorry to say but how
To an extent yes
i had it in the beginning and still sometimes have it when im playing vivecraft for a bit too long
If a game doesn’t have the right FOV settings on my ultrawide I can def start to feel some motion sickness
i guess that is a bit true, i myself just have a 27 inch monitor but never had any sickness from it
but ultrawide is ofcourse more in your fov
If you stream to the quest 2 using virtual desktop you can enable 120hz and SSW and you'll only need to hit 60fps, which is more much more likely to be sustained and reduce the jitter. Also I was getting motion sick for the first couple weeks myself as well, but just make sure the headset is tight and secure and try to play for at least an hour a day for a while to get used to it.
@dim smelt anti motion sickness meds can help during the first adjustment periods
Did meta just drop support for Quest 1? Where am I supposed to go
Is oculus or meta better
Oculus became meta
It was renamed meat basically
Looking up only if you wanna know more
@torpid plinth
meat?
I would like to see someone wear meat
😅
😂
I got motion sick easily when I first started VR, now, years later, it seems weird that that was ever the case... except occasionally in boneworks. I imagine if anyone tried boneworks right out of the gate they'd regret it.
Basically need to build up a tolerance to unstable fps before doing some intensive games
So has anyone tried out ChilloutVR since it seems to be the place to go until VRChat fixes their idiocy or dies?
ATM The CVR Is slowly fixing their servers due to the huge amount of players joining. It seems better and they will allowe good mods to be on the game. Even like 2-3 Mod developer joined the dev team. :)
I see. My family members all live super far away from each other, but we were always able to meet up in VR Chat for birthdays and other occasions. Since you could play on flat screen, even my older family members were able to get a hang of it and were just happy to feel like they were there with the whole family taking part in the celebration. I hope we'll still be able to do that in the future, even if it's not on VRC specifically
Chillout feels pretty Alpha-like, as-in, the UI feels clunky and very MVP (Minimum Viable Product) like. It has some cool things going for it, but it's not even as closely polished as VRChat and Neos are.
Talking about Neos, it's more something for people who like to tinker with things. It's pretty cool that you can essentially play around with everything, but it also makes it way more difficult for newcomers to get comfortable with the Interface
It's unfortunate, but right now, outside of Corporate Hell, like Horizons, and children's games, like RecRoom and Roblox, I don't really see a viable competitor to VRChat.
I'd love to play around more with Chillout or Neos, but neither seem good options for someone new to VR, who just wants to chill with friends...
Only time will tell how this post ages, I guess xD
all you can do is hope there won't be a replacement as ugly as what meta is trying to do
jeez, that design is disgusting
Meta out here alienating a large population by not allowing ppl to have legs in horizons
|| foot fetishists ||
meta out here making disgusting character design*
But fr, it sucks what's going on in the social VR space and I hope everything gets better sometime soon
that too
Looking through buying FBT tracking stuff (mainly 3x vive 3.0s and 2x 1.0 base stations). Is there a reason the second hand prices for the different versions are exactly the same?
Was there just not a lot changed? Or does it have more to do with newer headsets supporting older versions.
rift or rift s for beat saber?
I like to think the Rift S is strictly an upgrade over the OG Rift (CV1) but some people don't see it that way
Roblox VR has potential
Even some games right now like Opposer are really good and somewhat comparable to other VR fps games.

feel bad for people who didnt buy their quest 2 yet since the price just went up
https://www.reuters.com/technology/its-alive-how-belief-ai-sentience-is-becoming-problem-2022-06-30/
Honestly everything was good about the quest 2 except for the mantadory Facebook sign up and there was only a small gap where they removed that. Maybe they were all waiting for that and a Black Friday sale?
Meanwhile I purchased some planos and some prescriptions for my quest 2
I just recently started wearing glasses when computing and Its worrying wearing glasses in an HMD and possibly scratching the lenses

huh?
is the upgrade from a cv1 to valve index worth it? does it also get so hot on the face?
Been doing gmod VR. Yeah it’s got a real backrooms /liminal Space feel.
https://www.reddit.com/r/backrooms/comments/uupo6z/garrys_mod_is_the_perfect_backrooms_simulator/
Valve index especially with knuckles has great immersion imho
Hey guys, I am looking for a budget VR headset. I dont care about standalone software, as I am running it off a PC. My budget is basically as little as possible.
I am looking to do basic things like random light vr games
Yeah, the G2 is an often overlooked Headset, despite how usable the Tracking is...
I'm planning on getting my sister a Reverb G2 as soon as I have the money for it. I had half of it saved but then they took out my car insurance payment without telling me, and then I had to fulfill a pre order on something I signed up for over a year ago out of the blue. That along with the fact that my work has cut my hours down to 111 for the entirety of the next six months means I can either continue working 20 hours a week and be out of hours in a month and a half but get the money way faster, or only work 5 hours a week and make $180 a month. So I don't think my sister is gonna be getting her new headset any time soon.
Which sucks bc she's been having a lot of issues with her quest 2 recently due to software updates wrecking her performance
On the bright side, if she likes the Reverb G2 enough, she'll be giving me her quest 2, which I'll get much more use out of since I already have the proper prescription lenses for it, having owned a quest 1 as my first headset, and since I already have an index, it would only ever be used for standalone stuff while I'm traveling to places I can't take my full setup with me, which I think is its best use case tbh
if you get the quest, make sure to pray to zuckeyboy so he doesn't use your quest cameras for free feet pics lol.
in all seriousness though, make sure your okay with at least half the stuff they collect off of your usage
back to sillies, I've attached the holy picture zuck if you want to pray lol
I've already got a burner phone to install the app to so that they don't get any of my regular phone usage data. And like I said, I owned a quest 1 as my first headset, so I've already had plenty of data taken.
I just watched Ready Player One and I can highly recommended it to anyone into XR. It's a really great movie and it kinda shows where the whole XR space might be headed, if we don't embrace competition in both the hardware and software markets
I also highly recommend the book if anyone's into that kind of stuff. There are a few good references in the book that had to be cut out of the movie to save time, like reenacting the entirety of the movie wargames and playing a perfect 256 level game of pacman
I remember when the movie came out, people laughed at the whole 'we can cover this much % of the screen with ads' thing, but now not so much
Yup. It's a thing companies will definitely try. Whatever penny they can squeeze out of their users/customers, they'll try to squeeze out...
Only thing I found odd about the movie is that it seemed to have been mastered at mixed resolutions. I watched the 4k Blu-Ray version, and while the main movie was all nice and crisp (like you could see the film grain, as the life-action shots were shot on film and not digital), but then the credits at the end (and also the Text in the intro) looked like it was upscaled from like 720p or 1080p xD
Just found that interesting. I'm not normally a pixel peeper, just trying to enjoy the movie, but the upscaling artefacts on that white text at the end was kinda jarring ngl... (especially for a movie that's all about high-tech xD)
meh, hate the character design
they look like insects
which i7?
I'm gonna assume an I7 12700k maybe? Just going by the ~$375ish price tag. In which case, it completely depends on what your current CPU is and if you really need the new CPU
I personally don't think it would be worth it to spend $100 on a 4790k when the amount of performance you'd gain is way smaller than the difference in performance you'd get with a full platform swap
If you just want to play VR, the Quest 2 is imo best in standalone mode where your PC specs don't matter because the headset is doing everything on its own. If you just want to play VR, then that's the way to go rather than upgrading your whole PC. If you do want to upgrade your PC, then rather than spending money on a slightly newer processor, I'd recommend doing a full platform swap bc it would just provide better performance for the money you'd spend than just upgrading the processor
A 12100 utterly demolished a 4790k, 12400 even moreso. It's not worth staying on such an ancient socket.
PC specs can matter still with quest 2 because you can play pcvr on q2, it just offers the option of standalone for select low spec games.
If you're upgrading your PC specifically to play VR, then you're better off getting a different headset all together. Just because the quest 2 can play PCVR doesn't mean you should buy one specifically to do so. Just look at my sister, she bought a quest 2 and has never touched the standalone mode. She bought it strictly for tethered PCVR and she absolutely hates all of the little annoyances that the Q2 has when trying to use it like a native headset. So I'd say either buy a Q2 and use it standalone, and then if you still want to upgrade your computer afterwards, you'd be able to do so, and you'd have the Q2 to use for PCVR if the urge hits you (as long as you're okay with how much of a pain it is). But if you want the better gaming specs out of the box, then upgrade your system first and play flat screen games until you can get something like a used vive or an HP Reverb G2. It'll just be a better experience overall that way
I use my quest 2 exclusively to connect through steam vr using airlink. Honestly the only issue I’ve had with it was it’s short battery life, but that was solved with an external pack. Other than that, sometimes games won’t launch in vr mode but that’s more to do with steamvr (after it shows my headset connected) than anything else.
what i need to look for a mid tier vr pc ??
anything as or more powerful than a 1070, if youre getting new stuff then a 3060 would be better. The cpu doesnt have to be great, but as long as it isnt super slow then you'll be fine with a lot of stuff. Buying new, a 12100 would be enough, though a 12400 would be better for "future proofing". 16gb+ of ram, personally i think people should get 32gb for multitasking, but 16gb as a minimum.
For the cpu and gpu there are comparable options from prior generations that you may find good deals on, though i wouldnt go back too far in generations.
also, if buying a prebuilt like i think you are, compare prices for pretty much the same computer across many sites. amazon, newegg, ibuypower, and brands like acer, corsair, msi. If you dont have a great cpu, dont get ripped off with an AIO liquid cooler theyre charging too much for. Check how many fans the pc comes with, you dont want to get a pc that only has a single 92mm exhaust fan for the cpu and thats it. also avoid alienware/dell altogether. and razor.
Is there a cheap way to get a meta quest 2 in Australia 🇦🇺, it's expensive here, 680 bucks
i mean, unless you go used, not really. even if you get someone to send it to you, by the time you factor in currency conversion and import taxes and shipping fees, youre paying the same or more than just going to amazon.
dam oculus rift s
cant order it anymore
glad I got it a few years ago
I say that but it looks like the quest is superior
dam
They came a long way
in that regard
You're probably still getting a sharper image in the Rift S (if your IPD matches that of the headset), plus you get a much lower latency thanks to the native display input. The Quest is a decent budget option, but not the end all be all that some people make it out to be
The main issue I have with VR is lack of games
there isnt that many good games
that I like playing
Still love the few games I bought when I purchased my vr headset though
But it says you can plug it with usb-c to your pc I believe
so that would make latency issue out of the question, wouldnt it?
Nope
The Quest doesn't have a native display input, meaning the image needs to be compressed and send via USB 3 or Wifi to the headset to be decompressed there
They Type-C port on the Quest is kinda like the Type-C port on your phone, it can only carry USB data, not DisplayPort
(And power too)
I wonder if they'll add it for q3 next year
the pico neo 2 which is more or less a quest 2 clone (both made in the same place afaik) does have the ability to do displayport out
so disappointing they didn't bother adding that to the quest 2
yeah idk why they didn't
is it that much more complicated or expensive to make to make it less of a "well it can do pcvr" to actually solid?
I doubt it would have been that much more expensive, the quest 2 seems to have all the same hardware as the pico so they either omitted one or two small IC's to shave a couple dollars of the bill of materials
or worse the hardware can do it right now but there's some licensing fee to have it work and they won't pay it to keep again the total cost down
that would be so annoying if that’s true
i feel like someone would’ve discovered that by now though by taking it apart or something
when I saw quest 1 i was like bruh da fuck
what about you
personally vr games using your phone
was a dumb idea
vr games need so much power
if you want good graphics
and gameplay??
games can be optimized more than you think, also most of the games on it dont need a ton of compute power. Video players, beat saber, even vrchat made a custom version to streamline it
i forget if the q1 had a custom chip, but i know q2 has a custom chip which can handle the specific data consumption needs better than a regular phone
you wont be playing Alyx or Boneworks on it
Honestly, Meta had become too focused on the metaverse. That's why as soon as a standalone steamvr headset comes out, I'm ditching them. No metaverse exists on steam. Steam doesn't allow purchases with crypto.
Wee new eyepieces in
those games arent that fun in my book
for 3-4 hours
then it gets boring
i gave examples, and youre one person
people want good games in vr
people that buy vr headset
have money
its such a niche
and requires a good pc
if you wanna play the latest title
quest 1 was just a normal smartphone snapdragon 855 I think
I'm wrong
its the 835
not really
I had a rift s for a month or two and sold it because I couldn’t even afford any games for it since I blew my money on the headset itself
some vr games are kinda overpriced
well not some but a lot really
yeah
its supply and demand really
if more ppl get vr there will be more games , more competition etc.
Also vr games are more difficult and costly to make, and with a smaller number of consumers to buy them, the cost of the games are high
but its a niche so the game devs needs to make their profits from a smaller player base so they charge more
yea.
@pale orbit @harsh niche
Afaik the DisplayPort input on the Pico Neo 3 Link is through some special cable, it's not just a regular USB one. It does connect to the USB port, yes, but there's some special stuff going on next to the Type-C port and a regular USB-C cable won't connect through DP on the Pico afaik.
Also, you'd really think that Metabook would do something to make the PCVR experience better? They want you to use the damn' thing standalone. They only added PCVR capabilities to entice new customers...
Nvm. I'll take that back what I said about the Pico. Seems like the only thing special about the included cable is a locking pin and the fact that it terminates with a full-size DP and USB-A plugs...
for me, Meta is to closed off and westernized to be appealing to me anyway
hard to explain
I'm honestly surprised Meta isn't nailing down on Sideloading more. The Quest Eco System seems so much like Apple otherwise (as-in heavy handed walled garden for software, no availability of replacement parts)
There's always been some difference I can't explain, between american products, european products, japanese products, etc
in terms of software experience and hardware experience
even if, all of them want purely earnings
I mean, an obvious example would be western vs eastern in terms of gaming
mature style vs very modernized/futuristic style
The Europeans usually only follow trends set by American companies, but then blow the whole thing way out of proportion. The best example of this that I can think of is BMWs heated seat subscription
I've felt like europe is to america what apple is to android
as in, america is the one who does it first, then europe starts allowing it when it doesn't blow up anymore
tho in the end, its about the same
I mean, same thing with Xbox vs PS5 appearance
the VR stuff meta makes just seems to "convenient" and "clean" to me
convenience over quality
(lower quality experience, just for full wireless option)
some like that, you see it with PC cases as well (NZXT is the same to me)
just for some reason I've linked that with "Western products"
trading quality for slightly helpful features, even if it suffers in other aspects heavily
(something like wireless charging, to lazy to plug a cable in, and be willing to charge 3-10x as long)
That's because western customers tend to prefer convenience over quality. Meanwhile in Japan they had Home Video in HD in the 90s (MUSE & MUSE Laserdisc; both were 1030i so almost FullHD). As apparently there's a larger crowd there willing to pay more for the absolute best then there is here...
meh, I belong to the "I am willing to pay as much as needed for max quality, just ain't paying 2x for 1% performance" group
Same
there's a difference between high end and luxury products, I ain't entering luxury
12k$ couch is dumb
Although, I guess I draw the line of "Too niche and thus far too expensive" line somewhere else I guess xD
I mean, there's a reason I am willing to spend up to 2k on a keyboard, 1k on a mouse, 25k on audio, 5k on VR, 8k on PC, 5k on couch, 3k on table, etc
tho I usually decide to go a bit below it
5k on VR... Yeah about that... 😅
a little bit more than half usually
what bout it
You've seen my collection?
talking about a single system btw
Ah
like, "up to that much per system/item"
audio is probably the most overkill of the bunch, lol
"up to 25k on audio"
tho would likely end up spending at most 15k
I honestly don't remember what I paid for my Audio Setup. I think it was like 700€, and almost half of that was the A/V receiver xD
Guess that's what I get for wanting a custom system on a budget xD
I currently only spent about 1.5k total on audio
don't really want to go there until way into the future, because of the cost and my goal (moving away to another country)
spending like 20k on audio would cost me about 2 years of savings
bit to much for now
for the most part, I end up spending about 50-66% of what I am willing to spend
"the point where spending more won't actually improve the experience"
just go towards like 2k per speaker or smth
mono amps
that's what I would do if I actually chose to get speakers instead
I mostly use headphones these days anyways. The speakers are more like a backup now and one of them holds my second monitor up xD
get Susvara
Why change something, if I'm happy with it as-is?
to be happier with something else
I'll stick with the 3 Rs. Mainly Reduce
and I'll stick with "When I buy something, I am buying something to use it until it breaks or no longer does what I want it to do, and to extend the time, I spend way more than needed"
either breaks, or it just doesn't handle the new tasks
I only replace something, if I'm not happy with it (which is how my VR collection got to the point it is rn), if it's broken or no longer get's software support on a device, where I care about security (like my phone)
I just replace something when it is incapable of doing something I need it to do basically
if a dryer no longer dries clothes well anymore, I am buying a new one
if a computer doesn't run a program I need/want to use without causing me stress, I am upgrading
if an audio product sounds like crap on certain genres, I am getting one that does those genres amazingly
etc
some things just get very expensive that way...
others just cost a few hundred more, which is like a few weeks or so
ultra high standards don't help tho
a single stutter is already to much, lel
If you mean USB-C cable, then may I ask what you intend on using the cable for? Like for the Quest to play PCVR?
or do you mean like a dongle?
Pcvr
Well, for that use case I mentioned, the best option is still the official cable. You can go cheaper, but those are all copper inside, making them stiffer and potentially not last as long...
would you rather
VR headsets with locked down content like meta wants,
but only pay once
or
VR headsets with separate subscription based software
and controllers with extra features required for the software and the games released for it
which can be recreated but usually cost more because of obvious reasons...
they gonna want that 20-50%+ from people using their stuff, resulting in higher average cost, unless you go with their own
A subscription only makes sense for things that actually change with time
not saying it doesn't have to hurt
But hardware doesn't change, so a subscription for hardware only makes sense if you actually get the hardware replaced if it breaks and when newer hardware comes out, you get the new stuff for no extra charge
just, which pain would you rather deal with
being locked into a company, or pay 100 a month likely to have the freedom, and pay 10% more
As no company would be insane enough to do this, it won't happen
You don#t have freedom, if you keep paying for it
Either way is locked down AF
not hardware subscription
software subscription
the hardware you buy, being allowed to join their network requires paying
If you need that software to run the hardware, then it might as well be the hardware
Yeah, in that case the subscription is essentially required to use the damn' thing, and thus is equal to a hardware subscription
hardware + software with single one time payment
vs everything is more expensive, but you can use whatever you want for it
I am saying their games, there still is other places
so, a console?
a console requires you to buy THEIR hardware
For me, Freedom means I can do whatever. That includes with the software I bought (maybe not cheating/modding the games, but use all the features I paid for, which includes mulitplayer)
Anything else is not freedom imo
freedom is a lie anyway
life is still just wake up > eat > work > get home > eat > do what you want until you sleep > sleep > repeat
The fact that I need to connect to a server to even use my Varjo headset is quite a thorn in my eye. It means that whenever Varjo goes under, or they decide to shut down their servers, my hardware is essentially a paperweight. Even if I have the software, and SteamVR continues to exist, the hardware is absolute useless without an internet connection >.>
meh, I am fine as long as I can avoid using facebook products at this point
everyone using whatsapp makes it hard tho
You can pay to remove this online DRM, but it costs an additional 600$ >.>
because you get things like "join our whatsapp group if you want us to shut up -your neighbours"
Honestly, if someone refuses to switch to Signal for me, then they might as well not be a friend of mine xD
happened a while ago, neighbours had a birthday party
had to skip a night, because I ain't getting whatsapp for them to lower their volume but trade my phonenumber and hours a month wasted on denying spam calls
That's what "Nachtruhe" is for in Germany. 10PM on the clock. If you're not silent after that, you can get a hefty fine. There are exemptions issued for big events like Wacken Open Air but usually only for weekends
the only two things I care about right now, in terms of what I don't want to use
is phones with holepunch, and facebook's trash
same thing here, just law enforcement doesn't exist
so its just useless
and even if they answer its just "nah deal with it, we ain't going to do shit for that"
at least you've got the option ig
I am willing to pay more for even a single option more than facebook and similar
not because I care about privacy, I just don't want them to have any info
hey Ted how are you?
wot
wrong ping?
no
then what
then why ping me with some random message that makes no sense?
i wanted to paste the industrial society and its future copypasta but it would be probably considered spam
and what is that?..
I don't speak zoomer memes?
in fact, I don't speak memes at all
Industrial Society and Its Future, generally referred to as the Unabomber Manifesto, is a 35,000-word essay by Ted Kaczynski, published in 1995. The essay contends that the Industrial Revolution began a harmful process of natural destruction brought upon by technology, whilst forcing humans to adapt to machinery, creating a sociopolitical order ...
bruh
I ain't reading that "35000 word"
the little bit I read seems so stupid
and what does this have to do with what I said?
This is stealing 💀
They are just profiting over companies that don't care about spending 600 $ on an unlock
It's not like it needs to have internet to fundamentaly function like a quest could do download apps, it's juts glorified screen
Yeah that's just something left over that Varjo never bothered to change. The Aero is supposed to be the consumer version of a more expensive industry grade headset but they left the DRM on the consumer version for no apparent reason
eh
if you pay for something it’s yours
it should be anyways 😳
you guys heard about the subscription heated seats in a bmw?
give me a sec
Yeah I thought I remembered CB saying something about that yesterday. (sorry for the ping)
oops didn't see that
Do you guys think that vr is mature enough on Linux to try?
Possibly. I would consider dualbooting though for windows application compatibility.
Just so you can use windows whenever you wanna play games and then Linux as your actual computer.
Oh ok.
I don't have a vr headset yet so it was moreso a question of curiosity
Oh. I mean I guess?
If Linux has the same support as windows in terms of games and apps n stuff go for it!
Not really. You can run SteamVR on Linux, yes, and it does work with Windows SteamVR titles through Proton. BUT: Hardware selection is very limited, and SteamVR on Linux is pretty jank. Let me elaborate:
Currently only native SteamVR headsets (aka OG Vive, Vive Pro 1 & Index) and the Quest and Vive Focus 3 through ALVR are supported. ALVR is kinda jank as-is, and I personally wasn't able to get a stable connection out of it period, no matter the settings (while both VD and Air Link worked just fine out of the box).
Controller pairing for Lighthouse controllers just opened a blank Window for me, the Desktop view in the dashboard was completely broken (showing both screens super small, but controls were as if I was looking at just one screen), the Index Mic wasn't detected (so I needed to plug in earbuds using a dedicated headphone jack adapter, as splitting audio between the index headphone jack and speakers didn't work either), SteamVR is only capable of detecting 7 devices period (so if you have 2 lighthouses, only two trackers can be connected, with 4 lighthouses, no trackers at all; this makes FBT basically impossible on Linux).
And after all of that pain with SteamVR, the performance you get is like 50-75% of what you get on Windows. So games that were barely playable on Windows before, due to low Framerates, are unplayable on Linux. Beat Saber wouldn't run at more then 90fps and VRChat was jittering like crazy (FPS counter said 30fps, but it felt more like 5-10fps).
I just can't recommend Linux for VR yet. May differ with certain Distros (I was running Linux Mint btw), but I'm not gonna be distro hopping if I'm not able to use a large chunk of my collection anyways...
I use Linux mostly for Web browsing and working on personal projects. I totally love it, but I'll be sticking to Windows for Gaming for now..
yeah Linux for gaming is just eh
all games support windows but most don’t support Linux
I built a working #portal gun in #AugmentedReality!
