I love cats, my family have always had atleast one cat for as long as I've lived; still do, but i havet had a pet myself ever since i moved out

Cats are pretty easy. Clean litter boxes, give them food, play and love them, etc.

As long as you make enough money to feed, afford vet trips, and medicine when it needs it, and you genuinely try, you will never be the worst owner.

Even if you are "incompetent" at first, you'll learn over time. I made mistakes with my first cat that I've learned from.

There are hundreds of animal shelters full of cats (and dogs) right now desperate for a home. Many of them will be put down simply because no one wants them. That's a far worse fate than living with someone that loves them and sometimes makes a mistake.

Well, that gives me some motivation that I'm likely not the worst fate a cat would have. But if i were to do so, i certainly need to pull myself together before adopting a cat. My place is definitely a hazers Zone for cats both young and old in it's current state.

Baggers can't be choosers. Nor do I really see it that way, as i probably would adopt a cat from a shelter or similar. But is there any way of telling how calm a cat would potentially be, being adopted from a shelter? More in the sense that i don't want them to potentially hurt themselves around my apartment for being a curious creature.

Well you definitely would need to try and "cat-proof" the house as best you can. It's not as complicated as proofing for like a baby but it still has to be done for their own safety. It's mostly common sense stuff, no chemicals left out, no poisonous plants in the house (there are plants that are specifically toxic to cats), throw trash out, hiding/covering electrical wires so they don't get chewed, etc. etc. There are articles and videos that can explain better than I ever could.

I imagine a senior cat would be the best bet for a cat that's more calm and relaxed. Young ones are absolutely full of energy and are extremely curious. Your best bet would be talking to the people working at the shelter. They're going to know the cat's personalities. But you can't use them being a calmer cat, as a reason to not proof the house. They're going to get into stuff no matter which cat you choose, they're naturally curious creatures.

Only found out last week so back to vets again soon for more check ups.
The eye is effectively dead but the worry now is what led to the loss of sight and if his good eye is at risk!

No choice but surgery.
