Lame

#

My car is soo bad that even a Prius would be an upgrade

fathom socket

stainless won't pass MOT

charred depot
#

pass the UK one fine

fathom socket
#

hmm that's odd since often cars without cat won't pass because of emissions

#

speaking of car issues, my oil pressure light just came on, I'm debating about just setting it on fire and buying a new one

charred depot
#

you can pass MOT emissions without a cat under good conditions

frigid anchor

current list of issues:

  • dash computer does not work
  • right passenger lock has to be manually locked/unlocked from inside

Use it for fun and let it die or get it repaired and let your wallet die

also it's a shitbox with a 1.4 petrol engine that made 75bhp when new and I'm pretty sure I have a compression leak somewhere

#

#

Nope

#

Mine really hasn't really needed anything other than regular maintenance (filters, oil, spark plugs, brakes, ...)

fathom socket
#

thermostat switch was changed a year ago

#

but yeah I'm suspecting a faulty thermostat itself

#

something in cooling is not preforming up to date

#

ik

#

no leaks

#

regarding oil pressure - oil levels are fine, so I'm suspecting the pump is finito or the system is clogged up

#

I have to check, I'm not 100% sure

#

driving the car (aka having the air assist on cooling) brings down the temp to normal 90c

#

the oil pressure warning light only lights up when temps start to get hot

#

so I suspect it's the thermostat

#

not opening properly and not hitting the fan into higher speed

#

also might be that the fan is broken too

#

or not running properly

#

could be, electrical issues are a thing

#

I'll open up the fuse box tomorrow

#

look for blown fuses

#

but yeah, I think the motor is fine since it does have 200k km on it and mostly runs fine, no knocking or anything when running cold or hot

#

no smoke out of exhaust, not burning oil or coolant

#

so piston rings are fine and headgasket isn't leaking

#

I mean if piston rings were shot I'd prob have loss of compression with a blown/warped cylinder head or busted head lmao

#

also I'd be burning oil DEF

#

fuck I wish I had more space to work on my car

#

this one is not tight since the engine is NA, I just don't have the space since my driveway is literally on the street

#

also lacking tools

#

gotta buy some jacks first lmao

#

I'll prob spring for it when I buy a new car, buy some lower springs, up the exhaust and toss a tune on the engine

stoic ledge
#

fathom socket

I mean a tune and springs won't cross 600 euros

#

stoic ledge
#

fathom socket
# fathom socket

looks like the wiring might be damaged if you've changed it and it doesn't go away

#

prob 8+

#

tbh

#

it prob doesn't go 120

stoic ledge
#

European trucks usually have 12 gears

#

fathom socket

yeeah since they come with short gears

stoic ledge

And 90km/h limited

fathom socket
#

low RPM torque is important

stoic ledge
#

Yeah

fathom socket
#

fuck why didn't I become a mechanic

stoic ledge
#

Yeah basically max torque from idle

fathom socket
#

yeah

#

also running the engine at low RPM probably prolonges it's lifespan

stoic ledge
#

Yeah so according to Volvo, recommended revs are 950–1400 r/min

#

Basically where you see the max torque

#

xD

#

Also basically the green section on the tachometer

#

Hmm that one goes to ~1700

#

But you get it xD

fathom socket
#

yeah depends on the engine

Yup

#

I've heard VW petrol engines are bad, at least the 1.0/1.2 tsi

surreal jolt
stoic ledge
#

Why?

#

It's a semi truck

#

That's normal

#

Freightliner tachometers I find all go to 3000rpm

#

So probably also have a 2500rpm redline

#

Detroit DD16 in a Freightliner

#

2k max PogChomp

#

Ha that's 2800Nm, Volvo does 3500Nm

#

And that's the biggest engine Freightliner uses

#

Also not Mack

#

MP8 appears to be their strongest engine, also less power apparently

#

Very long stroke

#

Longer stroke = more torque but the time for the piston to go up and down increases -> less rpm

#

Simplified, but that's the principle behind it

#

Yeah so basically the stroke is the distance the piston can travel

dusk ocean
#

So I am rebuilding this ASA supercharger... and now I realize why it's like $3500, or was

#

Below is a typical Procharger -- often need rebuilds, noisy as shit at idle, etc. But you'll notice the large helical gear at the top. That's the input gear that is driven by the belt. The center gear with the bearing goes thru the unit and drivers the impeller. The large straight cut gear at the 4 o-clock position is a counter-balance gear -- since the input belt gear drives the impeller from the 12 o'clock, when it applies torque to the impeller, the whole thing wants to go side-loaded under torque. So, they basically mesh it against a static (but on bearings) counter balance gear so that it doesn't deflect. But it means the unit is like a tear drop shape but also needs rebuilds more often because its got a lot of side-load being that the belt drive pushes on the impeller.

#

But this is how most superchargers are, generally. Vortech, Procharger, etc.
You can also see how complex the machining is and the numerous bearings and gears
So after like 14 years on my shelf I tore my ASA TM-12 apart today

#

The center helical small gear goes thru the unit and is connected to the impeller centrally. The two helical gears perfectly opposite one another both drive the impeller gear so it is receiving deflection load on equal and opposite sides. I kind if visualized this before opening it up but I did not understand how two gears could drive a single gear unless the two gears were some how hooked together with a chain or belt or something...

#

And there it is. Opposite side of the housing there is a LARGE female helical cut gear that goes around both of those smaller helical gears above... and then opposite thru the housing is the pulley drive on that large female helical gear. So, its like 1/2 the moving parts, twice the reliability, but it requires a shit ton more machining tolerance because of how everything meshes together and nothing is adjustable.

Reverse not engaging easily, engaging 2nd gear got kinda weird, and a clicking noise in neutral

stoic ledge
#

Yikes

bitter compass
#

Reverse and the clicking are common issues

#

2nd i assume its similar to the reverse issue but worse because well, you don't change into reverse while rolling

civic spoke
#

I wonder if it's a problem with the linkage. Or just flat out a crappy clutch to begin with.

#

Because a clutch shouldn't be gone that quickly. Unless you abused it.

bitter compass
#

Imma ask ma local mechanic to look at it next week - but im probably just gonna get a new car anyways when i get a new job

bitter compass
civic spoke
#

Which you only do when taking off, mostly.

bitter compass
#

Id expect it to survive longer because woth the caddy i didn't have any issues with the clutch at all in like 200k km and it already had 300k on it when i got it

#

But like the general transmission issues are the bad ones the clutch is still fine, could be down a lot more but it isnt new either 👀

civic spoke
#

If the clutch is fine. Then I wonder if it's the linkage to the transmission that's whack.

bitter compass
#

Im just worried about the 2nd gear like if it gets like reverse its pretty much undriveable if it occasionally decides to not wanting to engage like reverse does

civic spoke
#

Which makes me think it could be the linkage between the gear lever and the transmission.

there are two compression ratio figures on ICE engines

static and dynamic compression

Dynamic can account for trickery around variable things like boost, etc.

the volume of the cylinder? like how big it is or something?
