Hmm online decoders don't take it, but they probably don't know the checksum for a 2022

But:
jf2sk9kl5ng077278
JF2 = Japan Fuji Heavy Industries MPV
S = Forester
K = Body Style (so gen of Forester, I'm sure it's correct)
9 = Engine, 2500cc 4WD
K = Model/Trim (idk which one, Limited, R, Nav, H/K? That was accurate in 2015)
L = Weight class
5 = Checksum
N = Model year 2022
G = Transmission (Full-time AWD CVT)

violet fern
#

Hydrogen car or electric car?

umbral flicker
#

hydrogen are too expensive

violet fern
#

tbh i prefer hydrogen

#

electric contains batteries that are incredibly toxic and produces huge amounts of emissions mining the rare earth metals

violet fern
#

whereas infrastructure already exists for hydrogen cars as they can just replace petrol

stiff burrow
#

250hp is basically nothing, it would make more sense to require a special license to drive a 400hp car

wispy cloak
#

We don't really have the infrastructure for either but hydrogen would take more

wispy cloak
violet fern
#

Batteries on the other hand are highly toxic and contribute to e-waste as they are unusable after 5 years

stoic ledge
#

Lol well that's also just not true Kekwww

Batteries can perfectly be recycled. The problem now is that reusing/recycling batteries is more expensive than just creating new once. That needs to be addressed.
Also, with proper battery management systems, batteries can have a long life. In the future, we'll need independent but certified repair companies to fix potential broken cells

Using current petrol stations for hydrogen is impossible as they work 100% different. Also, you can't transport hydrogen like you can fossil fuels

Hydrogen also has the downside that it's crazy inefficient compared to just electricity (~50%). And to be green hydrogen, it has to be created from green electricity.
Using left-over electricity, and turning it into hydrogen is a great way of doing so

Don't forget hydrogen fuel cells also use, for now, very rare metals.

Both will have a future, like diesel and petrol co-existing now. Hydrogen like diesel, BEV as petrol (give or take)

fathom socket
#

But there is a huge difference between the Mazda to I drive and the 500hp srt8

#

And I would be more than willing to take the extra licensing for it

#

I had to take extra training for my class 3, with airbrakes so I don't see an issue

fathom socket
#

Right now we have warehouses full of lithium ion batteries leaking toxic materials and or threatening to be giant bombs

violet fern
#

Another issue is how the electricity is actually produced, which is a flaw of both methods. The best way around this is to just focus attention towards fusion so that every car has a tiny fusion reactor inside it, and so electric, hydrogen and all other methods will be obsolete

fathom socket
#

Look up thermal runaway and just imagine that inside a massive warehouse

violet fern
stoic ledge
#

Lithium-ion batteries can be recycled for like 96%

violet fern
#

that 4% will add up very quickly if we end up replacing all cars with electric cars

#

which is the way we're going, especially in the UK

stoic ledge
#

So hydrogen cars are 100% recyclable? 🙃

violet fern
#

no

#

neither is really sustainable

#

fusion is the solution to all our problems with energy and transport

stoic ledge
#

And apparently current it's possible to recycle ~96%, maybe it's possible to recycle 100% in the future

fathom socket
#

Electric cars are so bad for the earth. I wish people realized this

stoic ledge
violet fern
#

yeah

stoic ledge
violet fern
#

much safer than combustion or batteries

#

ok here's the thing

#

its not like fission

#

it's not a controlled explosion

#

let's say the reactor container just breaks, nothing would happen

#

because there's such a miniscule amount of stuff in there and it requires enormous amounts of pressure for it to react

#

so if the container breaks and pressure decreases the reaction will just stop

#

in regular nuclear reactions that reaction won't stop it will continue at an uncontrolled rate and cause an explosion

#

batteries however cause unstoppable chemical fires

#

and combustion engines can explode

stoic ledge
#

But fusion has for now never existed in a way where it produces more power than it consumes. And that has occurred basically in gigantic labs. I don't see it feasible to put it in cars any time soon

#

It'll be amazing when it's here

violet fern
#

thing is progress towards that has been happening exponentially

#

we're breaking records for sustained fusion all the time

stoic ledge
#

But for now it might just as well be decades away

violet fern
#

I would predict fusion being in cars within 20 years

fathom socket
#

Small thermal runaway

violet fern
#

if you consider the exponential rate of progress

fathom socket
violet fern
#

lol yeah

#

teslas are death traps

fathom socket
#

And that's only 2 batteries

#

I can't remember how many a regular tesla has

#

Right now combustion engines are the best and safest way to go for both people and environment

#

And not just in regard to the batteries

#

But as a whole

violet fern
#

Idk

fathom socket
#

Here let's stick with batteries for a second

tropic mulch
violet fern
#

It would be close between combustion engines and electric cars as both require very intensive mining for manufacturing which produces a lot of emissions

fathom socket
#

How do you get lithium ion and copper for inside the batteries?

violet fern
#

idk

#

some mine in east asia?

fathom socket
#

That's a lithium ion mine in china

#

When they are done how do you reclaim that?

violet fern
#

You can extract lithium from lithium batteries

#

but the process is very long and expensive

#

once we run out of lithium it will become economically viable

fathom socket
#

These are oil sands mines after the oil has been extracted

fathom socket
#

We don't really have the years that will take

violet fern
#

But then while we still have lithium there's no issue of recycling

fathom socket
#

They estimate 30 years of oil if we are lucky

violet fern
#

It will only matter when there isn't any more to mine

fathom socket
#

What we need to do now is sell the oil we got and use the money to research and build real and safe green technologies

#

Like right now solar panels are just as destructive to create as the batteries and just as toxic in the environment as we have almost no recycling for them. And at best they are 33.6% efficient.

#

We are quite literally wrecking the earth to save it

tribal heron
#

Also the lithium and stuff is being sourced from less than ideal countries regarding environmental regulations too

#

Not to mention that the equipment they're using to extract it is probably running on gas and or diesel

and nearly all the mines use child labour

right now? Oil.

#

A battery can be recharged dozens of times. A gallon of gas is used once.

#

drill it, pump it, pipe it to a refinery, pipe it to a ship, ship it across an ocean using a ship that is fueled by heavy bunker oil, pipe it elsewhere, then truck it to a gas station. Hopefully not spilling anything along the way.

I'm not counting the methane and other gas emissions that go hand in hand with oil production, which is extremely potent for climate change.

So does a gallon of gasoline.

No there are no teslas up here that can survive to a million

dense shard
fathom socket
#

Yup in a small country

dense shard
#

I don't see how the size of the country is relevant.

fathom socket
#

How far do you think the chargers are distanced in germany

dense shard
#

I'm still not sure how that's relevant to the distance it traveled.

fathom socket
#

Do you think an electric car could get from Saskatoon Saskatchewan to Calgary Alberta on a single charge when it's -30?

dense shard
#

how many miles is that?

fathom socket
#

You could fit all of Germany into BC

dense shard
#

My Corolla could barely do 375 miles

#

And you know full well using an edge case is disingenuous.

#

Would you be more agreeable to EVs if there were a dozen charging stops between the two cities?

fathom socket
#

Calgary to Saskatoon is 600km

#

When it's-30 no way any teslas is doing that

#

But I use that example because I've made the trip

dense shard
#

Okay, and if there were more charging stops.

fathom socket
#

When it was -30

#

There would be no high speed charging stations so what's your average charge time for regular charging?

#

4 hours give or take?

#

Let's say 3

dense shard
#

Why not 2.

#

Modern chargers are fast

fathom socket
#

Ok 2

#

2 hours in -30c

dense shard
#

yes, just keep the heater running.

fathom socket
#

When my car took 5 minutes and I was on my way

dense shard
#

ok?

#

Congrats, EVs are not very viable in your specific use case.

fathom socket
#

Point I'm getting at is Canada is a BIG country with a lot of open space

dense shard
#

How about in between Birmingham and Amarillo Texas in the summer?

fathom socket
#

How much open space is between those cities ?

dense shard
#

~1000 miles

#

3 cities along the way.

fathom socket
#

And can you get a 1000 miles (1500km) out of your batteries one one charge?

dense shard
#

I can't out of any gas car.

#

Your point

#

Nor can I sit still for 1000 miles.

fathom socket
#

The old diesels VWs actually use to be able to do 1300 km on a tank

dense shard
#

Yeah if you hypermile

#

And you aren't doing that in the American south.

#

Or the PNW

#

Or anywhere really.

fathom socket
#

The point I'm getting at is that EVs are not able to survive many situations

dense shard
#

Take Spokane to Bismarck. There's 900 miles. That's 16 hours of driving.

#

They can survive fine.

#

You add time to your travel.

fathom socket
#

Yes in a perfect case with lots of charging they can

dense shard
#

Montana had huge stretches of road without a gas station. Same for New Mexico.

#

I coped fine

fathom socket
#

In warm weather

dense shard
#

Montana was late winter, I'll admit.

fathom socket
#

You don't lose 50% of your charge just to heating

dense shard
#

If you don't prepare and drive stupid, yes you lose 50%.

fathom socket
#

Imo 90% of the people on the road don't deserve to have a driver's license

dense shard
#

That's not the argument here.

fathom socket
#

No it's not

#

My points are this. 1) EVs don't have the life expectancy in real world scenarios outside of test environments. 2) creating the EVs is actually harder on the environment right now than the oil sands because we can't fix giant holes in the earth 3) our power up in Canada at least still comes from a lot of coal plants and a few water generators, but still more resources we need to burn, meaning your saving the earth is actually needing more power 4) our green technologies are shit and they are doing nothing more than rounding errors for politicians 5) I believe if we want to use EVs in real world saving ways we need to make the batteries truly recyclable, find a batter style that we don't need to dig materials out of the earth to make and have a power source that isn't dependent on the sun.

bitter compass
# fathom socket My points are this. 1) EVs don't have the life expectancy in real world scenario...

Hmm
Many people don't drive their car until the end of their life, like often just a minor damage and insurance tells you fuck off, that car isn't worth anything once its a bit older
Environmental all cars are bad for the environment, evs are worse in production but there's a break even point where ice cars overtake EVs in emissions
Power generation - now it's dirty but most western nations are on a somewhat common goal to reach fully renewable in some time, but too slow i agree

EVs aren't perfect, ICE cars aren't perfect, CNG aren't perfect, hydrogen aren't even close to perfect (because hydrogen is a pain to produce), synthetic fuel is hydrogen with extra steps.

Cars just aren't great and the real solution is to reduce the amount of them, what needs a drastic change of mind in the population

#

dire merlin
# bitter compass Hmm Many people don't drive their car until the end of their life, like often ju...

Power generation that could enable us to ditch fosil would require a way to store energy and be able to use it when in demand- hydrogen or pumped storage- everywhere. The way you fill these storages is stable(24/7) source of (clean) energy. Water flowtrough, contrary to popular opinion, don't produce much unless you are in like Austria where you got high attitude to take advantage of. Seeing as nuclear PPs take 20+ years to build, new pumped storage projects are being attacked by green nonprofits and hydrogen storage is nowhere near usable I don't see EVs taking of.

As to ditching the cars completely - mass transport systems were designed with cars in mind. So unless that gets scaled up it isn't an option either.

bitter compass
#

You can't get rid of cars completely - insert angry unrealist hardcore car opponent noises here - im from a rural area in the mountains, i know that public transport wont work there because people scatter all around for work and living, if i was for that I'd destroy myself because replacing 50 minute car drive vs 2.5 hour train just to get to work and then the same back would just kill me. And then i hear someone who lives 100 meters from the next underground station complaining about fuel prices and I understand those unrealistic car opponents a bit more 👀

copper oyster
#

So revisiting my bmw wagon thing:

#

It's gg'ed and I very well may be the one at fault

#

Engine oil was at minimum today; I had to add a quart. Still leaking

#

It has a 6-step transmission which made the gearing really akward for me coming from 5-step performance/sport trans tuners (like that janky old '03 saab 9-5). On the bmw, the first speed is too small and the second is somehow still geared too high. Out of frustration, I was taking her on first well past 40k rpm and skipping the second gear altogether going straight to third

#

Sometimes I even hit the tail end of the redline. The day I did that was exactly when I noticed the first fresh oil drips on driveway too. A few days ago, I checked the exhaust and the second pipe supposedly doesn't ever open. Somebody on a forum wrote this and how "they accelerate like grandmas".

#

Bottom line: I think I over-reved the engine and blew something open toolgun 🙃

dense shard
#

You can't really overrev a car if you're upshifting.

#

Fuel cutoff will stop you before you damage anything.

#

If you're going from 4 > 3 or 3> 1, that could blow it up, but you'd have a dead car.

copper oyster
#

Well I mean I took it to almost red on first straight to third to avoid shifting 1->2

dense shard
#

That shouldn't damage anything.

#

I've given my Corolla the beans plenty of times, no issues.

copper oyster
#

And that day I started spazzing out and doing that it seemed to had manifested

#

Well it was probably old and had warn out seals or gaskets n sht

dense shard
#

I'd just take it easy on the shifting all the same.

dense shard
#

You'll know pretty fast.

copper oyster
#

No it's leaking engine oil for sure. That I established

dense shard
#

My bet is main seal or maybe oil filter.

#

Yes, but from where.

copper oyster
#

Also when I opened up the valve, it was pretty hot and even steaming a bit. I think it's burning the oil too lol

#

Or maybe it's because it was at minimum? Wouldn't that cause it to burn easier? Whatever I put the craziest sounding weighted oil it said in manual with engine oil and full synthetic keywords on bottle lol

#

Wasn't the two most cheapest options either so 🤷‍♂️ I'm not down to find out what bmw certified synthetic is and how much BMW charges for it + certified BMW(tm) service charge. Must be something magic about how they handle the funnel and have superb attention to details in the pour

#

I called up the actual owner of the car and suggested taking it to the service center close to home for parking lamp and brake replacement. BMW would run at least 500 CAD for the parts and service. They asked me literally if I was ****ed in the head: brake pad replacements are around 80 and service another few dozen bucks at local Russki certified(tm) family friend service center

#

Then I gotta change transmission oil to see if it'll stop the grinding when engine brakes in gear. Then figure out the belt passenger seat problem that appeared today after I poured oil (my friend was leaning on that side of the car outside when it happened?)

#

The automatic trunk door tries to kill me sometimes

#

Within the week I'm also supposed to pick up summers and put them on finally; this will involve like 269km round trip at least (York Region to Hamilton and back if you know Ontario)

#

Tl;dr I think I'm gona park this bmw back from whence it came and lease a prius or something

dense shard
#

That sounds like a good idea.

copper oyster
#

Apparently that's what people do. I was told the sweet spot is 24mo lease priuses and trade in for next prius

#

All that's left is sexchange and I have the cheapest insurance in the world! Toyota won't get a chance to melt into ground if you get a new one every two years as well

#

My only fear would be freeways and doing anything over 100kph: I've been in my buddy's yaris and it literally topped out under 120 because wind that day. Once you pick up speed it's like kiteboarding. You have to like rudder trim with the car's body to stay on course
