Who needs efficiency when you have a wagon

So if you want to own a model x here in Sweden cost like 1 590$ every month if you paid the car in cash and drives an average of 15 500 miles a year and the base price for a model x in Sweden is like 110,000$ if I compare that do a XC90 D5 AWD inscription with a base price of 66,000$ that would have costed an average of 1 627$ every month if you bought the car cash without a loan same as the model x long range and with the same amount of miles driven every year. So yeah you save alot if chose a ev over a gas car even if the ev has a way higher sticker price then a "similar" ice car.

i'd personally run a cable to the boot. It's safer. If you ever need to use that jump point in the front you could end up blowing your light bar to pieces.

charred depot

the only difference between adding another ring terminal to one of those threaded posts and the battery in the boot is a few meters of thick overspeced cable.

thorny dawn
# charred depot explain how brining another 12v battery in parallel would blow the lightbar up

You really want to test me? not knowing what i do for a living KEKW
There's a reason they have those jump points in the front and there's a very good reason why you should never jump a BMW from the AGM battery in the boot.
12v is 12v... voltage doesn't kill you. Amps is what kills you. Can you guarantee a running car connected to that 12v jump point to be kicking out the right amount of amps? I bet you cant.

charred depot
#

oh god

thorny dawn
#

You go hook up another 12v battery to the battery in the boot of a modern BMW. Let me know what happens, ill wait 😜

charred depot

plenty of people have done it

charred depot
#

the only difference between that point and the battery in the boot is a few meters of thick wire

thorny dawn

No... no it really isnt.

so whats the difference

thorny dawn

go look at the cable, let me know if its just point A to point B.

charred depot

weve actually had a E39 diesel with a car sat behind and infront jumping it

#

charred depot
#

you can jump start an AGM just fine

stoic ledge
#

Does the light bar come with indicators

#

runs

charred depot
#

but none the less you said it would blow up the light bar which absolutely wouldnt happen

#

why spread fearmongering BS

thorny dawn
#

Depends on the car its in. There's a very good reason you don't jump them on BMW's trust me I know this all too well. I tune vehicles for a living. BMW in one day, AGM battery. I have to hook up a permanent 12v feed to read and write to the ECU. Hooked one up to the back of a at the time brand new BMW 3 series. It blew the ECM, the battery control module and about 16 fuses. All of which had to be coded back in after replacing including the battery. When i spoke to BMW they explained it all that nothing should ever be hooked up the battery in the back. The cable from the front regulates the power going to the back and bypasses the battery when needed to get the car started. You should also never hook anything up to the point on the front, and only wire in aftermarket devices to the fuse points near the battery in the back.. never on the battery itself.

charred depot
#

that line will feed the fuse boxes with all the lights so how will this aftermarket light be so direly affected

Bigger bearings

grizzled crypt
#

POG

dusk ocean
#

If you cook a wheel bearing in a plastic hub assembly the bearing gets so hot it kind of melts the plastic hub and the new bearing won't really fit very well

#

So I just go aluminum CNC hub assemblies with the larger bearings

grizzled crypt
#

Ohhh

#

well yea I guess that makes sense

#

Only think is that for the rustler

The bearing is inside the steering knuckle

With how much he's needing to spend on gas, I'm trying to convince my grandpa to at least consider trading in his current car for either a fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, but I'm not sure what we should be looking at

His current car is a 2017 Ford Escape SE with about 148k kilometres, and from what I can find, its trade-in value could be anywhere between $14k and $33k CAD according to Carfax. Assuming the lower end, and based on what he's spending on gas (around $300/month, but sometimes as high as $400, depending on gas prices), he should be able to afford something in the $35-45k CAD range

So, my question is this. What vehicle(s) should we be looking at?

I think his requirements would be:

  • a crossover/SUV no smaller than his current Escape
  • plug-in hybrid would probably be the preferred route so he doesn't need to worry about running out of charge in the middle of nowhere (realistically, this shouldn't actually be an issue, but it's one reason he doesn't really trust fully electric vehicles)
  • AWD would be preferred (it's nice to have during Alberta winters), but not necessary
  • I believe he would prefer to stick with Ford, but would consider other brands as well. We have a decent selection of dealerships in our town, so we're not really limited by that. We have most (if not all) of the major companies, and if we go into the city, there are more options as well
  • for a PHEV, I'd say a minimum electric range of 55-60km would be ideal. His usual drive to work is about 17km each way, and we're also about that far from town in the other direction, so that should be enough for a trip to and from work, and a trip to and from town in the same day without needing to switch to gas, assuming he plugs in while at work

I was recently looking at the 2022 Ford Escape SE Plug-In Hybrid, since it's the closest thing to what he currently has, but I'm honestly just not sure what's out there for similar-sized electric or PHEV crossovers/SUVs

stoic ledge
#

Trade-in.. you're probably on the lower end yes, due to the miles. 33k almost gets you a new one Pogey

Escape PHEV, I assume it has the same engine as the Kuga PHEV in Europe (2.5L)? If so, that's actually a great car, and quite a good value (atleast it is here). Don't think it's AWD to, just FWD...

AWD PHEV limit's the options...

Just on the top of my head that I know are also available in Canada:

  • Toyota RAV4 Prime

Some models in Europe of which you maybe can check if they're also available in Canada:

  • BMW X1/X2 xDrive25e

Apparently not available in Canada, but you might better check yourself:

  • Hyundai Santa Fe & Tucson 1.6T PHEV 4WD
  • Jeep Compass 4XE
  • Kia Sorento & Sportage 1.6T PHEV 4WD

Those are what I can come up with right now, but maybe I've forgot something

But, how many miles does he max a day? Otherwise an EV might still be the right solution. The Mustang Mach-E might fit great, and as the Premium AWD LR version has quite a nice range but $78,540 CAD might be over budget 😅

But yeah, the Escape PHEV is also a great solution. He just won't have AWD. But the range is sufficient to do 17km to and from work combined easily

#

But maybe better, go to the Ford dealership near you and let him experience both the PHEV Escape and BEV Mustang

#

If he wants give up a Ford and AWD, the Bolt EV might also be a great option which would fit within budget. It's actually quite a nice car

#

But yeah, just get him to drive both drivetrains, and then let him choose Pog

# stoic ledge Trade-in.. you're probably on the lower end yes, due to the miles. 33k almost ge...

Like I said, I'm definitely assuming the lower end of the value. Lol. That's just the range Carfax gave me

Yeah, the Escape PHEV is FWD only. AWD isn't a requirement, just a nice to have (and even then, mostly just in the winter)

  • The RAV4 is definitely an option. I'll add it to the list of possibilities
  • Looks like we have X1s and X2s here, but only the gas versions. We have the X3 PHEV, but that's almost definitely out of our price range. My grandpa also doesn't like BMW. Lol. My brother has one (not sure what model), and it's had constant issues, and fixing it hasn't been cheap
  • I am seeing those Tucson and Santa Fe models. I'll add them to the list
  • I'm not seeing any PHEV Compass models here
  • Looks like we have Sorento PHEVs, but not Sportages

The Mustang would be cool, but that's definitely out of the potential budget... Lol

For the Bolt, I think even the EUV version is just slightly too small, but I'll definitely add it to the list

Thanks for the recommendations. Now, I just need to convince him to at least consider doing it. Lol

stoic ledge
# midnight sequoia Like I said, I'm definitely assuming the lower end of the value. Lol. That's jus...

Oh yeah apparently the Hyundai/Kia's are there, but searching it from here redirected me to the US pages, where they don't have it

Sorento and Santa Fe are maybe a tad larger than the Escape, but not too much.

Maybe the Santa Fe might be preferred over the Tucson tho, as it has a more traditional interior with physical HVAC controls etc. Looks like there's a 2023 waiting list tho 😅But it looks like it'll fit withing the expected budget (2022 SANTA FE Preferred Plug-in Hybrid AWD $42,629.92)

Sorento is similar sized to the Santa Fe, just the Kia version of it. Sportage is apparently not available as a PHEV... the Niro is but that's slightly smaller, and also FWD. Sorento PHEV is apparently more than the Santa Fe? (2022 Sorento PHEV EX+
$50,695.00)

2022 RAV4 Prime SE AWD $44,990.

So yeah, if he want AWD and PHEV, I'd suggest looking at:

  • RAV4 Prive (also very fast lol)
  • Santa Fe PHEV
  • Sorento PHEV

Only PHEV (FWD):

  • Ford Escape PHEV. Perfect for him as it's a fine car, and it's still a Ford

BEV (FWD):

  • Bolt (EUV). Same car underneath iirc
#

Ok no the Hyundai price is before tax apparently, while the Kia price includes tax?

#

2022 SANTA FE Preferred Plug-in Hybrid AWD:
$48,171.81 with tax
So still slightly less than the PHEV Sorento

#

Personally I'd say the Santa Fe and Sorento are nicer cars to be in than the RAV4? But that's just personal

#

Just trick him in saying you're buying a new car and you want him to come along, and then bamboozle him

midnight sequoia
# stoic ledge Oh yeah apparently the Hyundai/Kia's are there, but searching it from here redir...

Thanks. I'll definitely keep all of that in mind.

Also, I missed the question about max miles in a day. At the absolute minimum, it's about 35km every day (just him going to work and back). Days I work would add about another 64km (16km each way to drop me off and pick me up, since I can't drive yet. 28, and I was only able to get my learner's license last year...), and another 32km if we need to get groceries. So I'd say around 130-140km max in a day. Average day is more like 70-80

midnight sequoia
stoic ledge
#

PHEV won't get you all those km's on electric, but can easily cut the fuel bill in half. Maybe even more if he can recharge it between trips CLe_FeelsUpsideDownMan

stoic ledge
#

140km max a day is easily achievable on any modern EV btw

midnight sequoia
#

He can definitely plug in between trips. At least a few hours while he's at work, and anytime he's at home

#

I know. Lol. He just doesn't really trust fully electric vehicles

stoic ledge
#

Idk what the charging speeds in Canada are, but within a few hours it's possible to fill it up almost back to 100% lol

#

So yeah with a PHEV he could do almost all the kms on EV power

midnight sequoia
#

I'm not sure either. Standard outlets are 120v, but I'm not sure what we could get with a dedicated charger

stoic ledge
#

Also heavily depends on the current, and how many phases. And the on-board charger of the car ofc

#

I don't know the chargers on the cars by heart lol

#

here it's common to have a 3-phase 16A 230V wallbox if you get an (PH)EV, which is ~11kW

#

But most PHEV's don't have a 3-phase onboard charger

#

Apparently a standard outlet is 120V 12A? Yeah that's not too fast lol, 1.44kW...

A RAV4 can take up to 240V and 32A apparently?

#

Not sure, but that's also something to keep in mind

#

With 240V and 32A, you can charge it fully in 2.5hr. 240V 16A takes 4.5hr.

Imagine this. The year is 2050. Electric cars are booming. Instead of charging stations to charge your car. The road will charge it for you. It may sound full proof but they tires of the cars release kinetic energy using copper coils and thin batteries that are easy to fold, bend, and break without lithium spewing out. The roads will be covered with copper coils and a new alternative to asphalt

deep zealot
#

that would be way too expensive

#

the government doesn’t care that much

charred depot
#

wireless charging is grossly inefficient if thats what you are proposing

#

cars are environmentally bad regardless of their propulsion in a ideal world by 2050 they arent used for commuting etc

deep zealot
#

i mean technology can evolve

#

especially by 2050

#

but it wouldn’t change the fact it would be way to expensive to be realistic

deep zealot
#

flexible batteries is possible

#

puncture proof batteries are not

fathom socket
deep zealot
#

No doubt it is interesting

#

but if you want to be realistic it would be done on a much smaller scale

#

E.g. on a highway, the highway divider and the fence on the right contains skates that charge and guide the car as it moves

#

if a car needs to charge they can merge into those lanes and then it’s just autopilot, and then they can merge off when they’re done charging (or they’ll be forced off if they don’t merge off themself to avoid congestion)

#

I found this on YouTube by the way

Making the entire road a wireless charger is crazy expensive, and also crazy inefficient

If we're going that route we can basically just create hydrogen from electricity Pogey
