@wispy cloak a malfunctioning trans costs way more to repair in cases with more expensive cars

wispy cloak
#

I can get a junkyard trans for my truck for like $500

#

And it's wayyy easier to replace

#

But that's probably just the audi

viscid atlas
#

Yea, thats a junkyard trans ._.

#

You could grab a junkyard clutch plate etc aswell, and DIY it. Its not a good solution

wispy cloak
#

There are no junkyard manual cars from the past 30 years around here

viscid atlas
#

Just dont shift too hard. Manual transmission goes for way longer than autos in most cases

#

My Porsche 911s clutch hasnt been changed in 77K miles

wispy cloak
#

My f150 had trashed synchros

#

it did have 235k miles tbf

viscid atlas
#

Its also a truck, designed to not break

wispy cloak
#

But my mom's Mopar van has 199k with no trans problems (knock on fake Mopar wood trim)

#

I'd rather pay for a fluid change on an auto every once and a while than have the massive upfront cost of a clutch job when it comes to it

viscid atlas
#

"Mopar van" is an American auto vehicle, yes, those wont break easy unless theyre newer dodge rams

#

Euro and japanese auto trans are not as reliable

wispy cloak
#

Mopar transmissions have a long history of being bad

#

Really back to the second gen rams

viscid atlas
#

Ive heard of ram trannys literally not lasting more than 40K

#

Which is 996 IMS issue level bad

wispy cloak
#

Yeah they're pretty awful

#

I really don't know why people still buy them

stoic ledge
#

~€500 after 200k miles for a clutch replacement is negligible. The "i NeEd An OiL cHaNgE eVeRy 2000 mIlEs" costs way more 😛 So in terms of servicing costs it's next to nothing

#

And manual gearboxes basically last forever unless poorly operated, or or a design flaw (e.g low quality bearings)

viscid atlas
#

Yep

#

@stoic ledge also theres trans fluid in manual boxes aswell, so

stoic ledge
#

Yeah ofc PogChomp Although it doesn't need to get replaced as frequent as auto fluid, it's best to replace it also

#

But what I meant more was.. Americans replacing their engine oils at ridiculous mileage intervals but a clutch replacement is too expensive. Use normal intervals and you saved up more than a clutch replacement

civic girder
#

what intervals

#

10k miles?

viscid atlas
#

I replace my oil every year or so.

#

Even if i only drove 5K miles

#

I dont want my IMS bearing to break.

stoic ledge
#

Idk you often see people saying replacing them after 2-3k miles or something, which is ridiculous

viscid atlas
#

If you do track days often, i could see it

stoic ledge
#

Sure, but such cars require different maintenance

#

They also go faster through other "consumables" like brakes etc

#

But for regular driving, nah

charred depot
#

£60 down the drain because someone dropped a screw 🗿

#

new tyre on now

stoic ledge
#

Don't you need the same tires on 1 axle?

charred depot
#

the only requirement here is that the size is the same for inspections

#

its the same tyre just without 5000 miles of wear

#

My parents civic had a different brand and age on each corner

#

its on the back so its not really going to mess with anything and I dont rotate my tyres

#

"Hybrids and electric cars are fair game. We cannot electrify our way out of the climate crisis - there are not enough rare earth metals to replace everyone’s car and the mining of these metals causes suffering. Plus, the danger to other road users still stands, as does the air pollution (PM 2.5 pollution is still produced from tyres and brake pads)."

analog musk
#

I would like to make the point that, industry and power generation in general creates much more waste. yes, a car is a pollutant, and replacing some of them with electric cars is cool, public transit is nice, and it is better, but its only ~x<1/3 of the worlds co2 production, with industry and 77% of the worlds co2 coming from industry, material transport, and power generation, so, shipping ships, aircraft, trains, and industry, cause extensive damage, people slashing tires, is very stupid but its also proububly becuase they don't think that that will get them in that much trouble compared to bringing down a plane or de-railing a train

analog musk
charred depot
#

they just stick a little rock or seed on the valve and screw the cap on slightly

fathom socket
#

noone tell them that making tyres is also pretty terrible for the environment

#

and slashing them means A: the old tyres have to be dumped or whatever and B: a whole new set of tyres needs to be made

charred depot
#

They werent slashed

wispy cloak
#

I'm sure of it

remote ridge
#

So I know having all fresh and high quality tires is really important for motorsports especially in cars with powered rear wheels. Is it still just as important to have high quality rear tires on a fwd vehicle or could you cut corners in that area

charred depot
#

Nah just do a 360 in the wet around a bend

#

Most car manufacturers intend to make fwd cars very understeery for safety if you go and put some decent tyres on the front and shit on the back you jeopardise that

stoic ledge

stoic needle

stoic ledge

stoic needle

First they say gas is bad and diesel good

#

Then it was gas is good and diesel bad

#

Now both are bad

#

Electric good

stoic ledge
#

Yup

stoic needle
#

And most electric comes from not renewable power so what has changed, nothing😂

stoic ledge
#

Well turning fossil in to electricity is more efficient than turning fossil in to petrol/diesel, and then burning it that way... but the infrastructure isn't there at all

#

It will come eventually

stoic needle
#

Yeah but the giant batteries arent that enviroment friendly

#

And what to do to recycle them?

#

They’re still looking into that

stiff burrow

Looks like the state will issue a new vin if you swap the engine

Engine swap is doable, it needs to have a new inspection etc to see if it's "up to code"

Still won't work if you get outside of the larger cities

the schedule is actually very consistent, the busses come by every 15-20 mins

stoic ledge
#

I have to go to Brussels next week... can't get there by both car or public transport KEKW

#

Well I can get there

#

But can't park a car or it's still 2 miles away

#

And public transport, I can't get back in the evening

#

So idk how to do it

stiff burrow
#

bike?

stoic ledge
#

Yeah let's go biking for 200km

stiff burrow
#

no i mean drive to brussels, bring your bike and bike the last 2 miles

#

or rent a bike

#

do they have a city bike system?

stoic ledge
#

Oh god you need 300000 different apps for that

#

Which 99/100 times don't work for me

#

As I'm Dutch and they accept Belgian payment systems

#

Which is also horrendous

#

There should be a "Park and Ride" system, which lets you park the car just outside Brussels and you can take Public Transport from there

#

But those parkings are basically reserved for people who do that every day of the week (they have a subscription)

#

There is one open for "other" people

#

But it's on the entirely different side of the city, so I first have to drive all the way around it

#

The information I can find about it is horrendous

#

My other solution was parking a car at a nearer train station and then take the train from there... but the car park only let's you park there if you have a valid ticket on a "MOBIB" card which is something specifically for Belgians which I also don't have

stiff burrow
#

rip

stoic ledge
#

So it's basically impossible to get there KEKW

#

Parking on the street is also impossible as there's a 2hrs limit

stiff burrow
#

they don't have a visitor parking solution for the train station? weird

stoic ledge
#

Yeah, but a crazy rate which would cost basically €50 for the 2 days it needs to stay there (vs €10.50 with a train ticket on the MOBIB card)

stiff burrow
#

oh

stoic ledge
#

Also that trip would take me 2.5hrs driving up to the train station and parking there, and then taking the train to Brussels

Vs 1hr driving right up to the front door

stiff burrow
#

bruh

stoic ledge
#

Wouldn't even be such a problem if I could park it there for 2 days for that €10.50, but €50 is a bit crazy imho

#

And yeah 2..5hr travel time...

#

I have no idea why the event is hosted at the shittiest reachable location ever lol

stiff burrow
#

2.5hr isn't bad, but that 50 euro parking fee is absurd

stoic needle
stoic ledge
stoic ledge
#

@stoic needle must now this: what's a prober way to get to/park in Brussels?

stoic needle

stoic needle
#

yeah

#

but 2-3hrs away from brussels

#

Gotta go to the Royal Military Academy monkaS

stoic needle
#

by the time i get there and find a place to park its time to head bck

stoic ledge
#

Basically

stoic ledge
#

So I wanted to use the Park and Ride but that's also basically impossible?

#

Or the one which can be used is on the other side of the city
