Not a professional but I think it's just the timing of cams and sparkplugs. Correct me if I'm wrong but if you have a DOHC engine you could probably manually time it so that it all happens in reverse and then just reverse the polarity of the starter motor. It would end up driving the car in reverse in every gear tho which would be interesting

the X5 plug in hybrid is probably the best in the business, but it's so expensive you might as well get an EV

They're both big ol' SUVs (what country are you in) - the general consensus on them as a group is that the BMWs tend to have better driving dynamics and the Audis tend to have nicer interiors

Personally I'd get a Tesla Model Y or an Audi Q4 e-tron for similar money

As with everything, the things that separate the two are practicality (the audi is bigger, but has more seats) and things that are for the most part, subjective

the plug-in hybrid X5 has enough range to cover an actual commute - so you can get materially more travel for the same money if you keep it charged up, but it still has a highway capable V6 when you need it

but other than that I don't know how you'd come to the conclusion you prefer one over the other without driving them both and seeing which controls/interior/exterior/driving dynamics/cost you prefer
