Tesla would have been bankrupt years ago if elon wasn't dumping most of his salary back into the company

The only good things Elon has done for the world are create Paypal and advance battery tech at an impressive rate

Paypal is pretty impressive

battery tech im pretty sure others have beaten him to it

my car doesn't have a laser, unless the big module mounted to the inside of my windshield does

I can believe 3 dudes in a basement making a self driving module, and making it open source. But plug and play is too far fetched

prime valve
#

its a module

#

but its supposed to just work in any car

civic girder
#

plug and play for a specific model, or at most manufacturer, sure. But not universally so

#

Every manufacturer programs their shit differently

prime valve
#

yeah i know

civic girder
#

pids and codes can vary, and basically every car with any ability to control aspects of itself will be implemented differently. A lot of that tech will be patented and this company would probably need to pay manufacturers for technical details

Tesla announces Full Self-Driving package price increase to $12,000

https://flip.it/glF1Ej

Tesla announced today that it is going to increase the price of its Full Self-Driving package to $12,000 starting on January 17. The price bump should coincide with the release of an important new update. The Price of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) package has been somewhat controversial. #

Ok I have question

#

With engines

#

Is the ‘orientation’ of the engine

#

The opposite way round of the way the pistons go?

#

That is are pistons considered horizontal across the engine?

dapper meadow
#

Well i don't really get what you trying to say, but engine is just an assembly, there are several types of engines based on piston position, like w16, V12, flat 5, inline 4, boxer, rotary, radial and few more...
The piston movement to one another and block setup defines how the engine is placed.
Hope this will be a generic answer 👍.

#

@eager grove there isn't a standard piston orientation for the engine, the piston might be in any axis, and the engine is built around the mechanism.

#

Thanks @dapper meadow

What I mean is this— they call the orientation used for V8s and V12 or whatever ‘longitudinal’ - which implies to me that the engine is aligned the same way as the car. But the more cylinders, the more space needed and the longer noses those cars seem to have

stoic ledge
#

For the engine itself doesn't matter if it's longitudinal placed or transversal. It is usually linked with the type of power train a car has. RWD = longitudinal, FWD = transversal. However, here are some exceptions like the Passat B5: it had a longitudinal engine placement while being FWD

Some sports car makers have taken to moving the engine behind the front wheels. Then we have Audi/VW

#

@keen sleet @stoic ledge
The Insight interior is worse than the Corolla interior hands down. It looks and feels cheap.
That said, the Insight has way better infotainment since it uses the same thing as the Accord.
Honda's safety system also sucks. The lane centering is weaker and only works at highway speed; and the whole suite in general likes to freak out sometimes. About the only things that work consistently well are the collision mitigation braking and Blindspot monitoring; adaptive cruise seems to work ok as well. Personally the Toyotas are much better; tho I'm pretty biased. If you're looking at the Corollas, only consider the 2L engine or the hybrid; the 1.8L with CVT are slow and will probably frustrate you. The Insight is based on the 10th gen Civic, the interior is actually very similar and you can see the bodylines in the side profile.
The Prius will get the best mpg hands down. Looks aside, it's the best; but most expensive option.
Comparing the Corolla Hybrid and the Insight, it primarily comes down to your taste and what kind of driving you do the most. The Insight gets really really good city mpg due to its fancy serial hybrid system; where the Corolla Hybrid gets better highway mpg due to Toyota's incredibly well designed parallel hybrid.
Iirc the Insight is about $2k more MSRP, but if you do primarily city driving it's worth it; the EV mode is very good and the variable Regen braking is an awesome feature.
Personally I wish I had gotten a Corolla Hybrid instead; but it's not like the Insight is a bad car, I just have some nitpicky issues with it.

#

The Insight is faster than the Corolla Hybrid and the Prius as well. If that matters to you.
Honda's serial hybrid system has only been around since 2016 or so when it was introduced in the Accord hybrid, so it's reliability is more suspect than Toyota. Toyota's eCVT parallel hybrid system has been around since the late 90s and been continuously improved over the years. Honda's old IMA system was hot garbage, the Civic Hybrids of old are extremely unreliable.

stoic ledge
#

The Civic Hybrids were hot garbage yes, but wasn't the 2nd gen Insight also alright?
