#

Ban on Petrol, LPG and Diesel is OK. But give some alternatives and let encourage CNG and Hydrogen for personal cars, and LNG for HGV's

civic girder

The problem with banning ice engines is that it really doesn't solve the root environmental issue

#

Electricity is the number one polluter

#

What happens when you replace a car with an ev? you put an increased strain on the electrical grid.

#

Your fancy pants ev pollutes no less than your neighbors ice car.

a greater emphasis on improving fuel economy and making hybrids more prevalent makes the most sense to me

analog musk

geothermal is infintily more capable then nuclear

Now everything is much safer then before

solemn inlet
#

^

fathom socket
#

And I think we ain't gonna build the flawed soviet designs and we don't have high risk of natural disasters

#

At least here in Poland

fathom socket
#

Most of nuclear incidents were on such a small scale

analog musk
#

currnetly drill tech is a little bit bhined but, honeslty once we start making more capable coolent systems for drills,
or just make more geothermal plants in thinner crust locations
we can proububly power most of south amarica off of just chilie,
now that does mean they are more vunerble to shock from earthquakes, so chilie is a little bit more danogurs
but places in the USA, are easly tappable. gerothermal plants, are cheaper then nuclear,
infintily more safe, cause effecvtily no damage to the envorment,
and it only requiers water and pumps. it systems are a lot less complex, which means the engnears, once it is drilled can be common, and don't need to be highly trained or educated, as the systems there working with are simpler then a dam.
the risitrction currnetly is, the lack of mass use of the technogly, but the technogly itself is more promising then fusion energy,

#

its much smaller then solar or wind, and is much much easer to build. the amaount of work that goes into making a wind plant or solar plant or nuclear plant is massive, all of which cause huge damage to the envorment. you have to wait a long time for solar and wind to pay back the resources used. geothermal, does not have this draw back.

#

it is case spsific. you don't want to drill 5 miles through a mountian in the rocky mountains, but if you had too drilling off the coast or near costal is exceedingly easy.

#

geothermal is a new technogly. and like any its not perfect at this time. but once drill tech is far along enough, nuclear, and coal plants are bassicly obsolite.

#

now, the mobilty of nuclear power like micro nuclear reactors that could be intresting but currently they don't exist on a large scale and proububly only will be used for ice breakers and reaserch bases in remote areas

civic girder
#

but at the same time

#

there's nothing inherently wrong with wind, solar, or nuclear

#

They're all less environmentally impactful than coal and natural gas

#

plus you can't forget hydro electric power

#

And yes, if a nuclear reactor goes into meltdown you can fuck shit up. But realistically it shouldn't happen 9 times out of 10 if you have competent personnel.

#

Wind and Solar I will agree 100% are not cost effective to use on a large scale

#

better in localized situations, like solar panels on the roof of a building and wind turbines on some dude's farm

#

geothermal is great tho

#

But the problem is that its not likely to be implemented, just like everything else

#

Why spend all the money to switch to something new when we can just keep using what we have?
Its the wrong mindset, but that's the inherent problem with how the world is run. Corporate greed reaches too far

analog musk
#

nuclear, is expesnive, and it requiers huge amounts of engnears to produce a reactor. that doesn't mean its bad it just means gerothemal is way better for devloping countrys who would otherwise rely on coal, which makes gerothmal a much much better option. comptent perosnal, are exmtelry importent for nuclear power plants. that makes them very expensive.

hydro electic power is extnerslty terrble for fish, that doesn't mean it is all bad, it is argbuuily very good but not every country can build a long term high power hydro electirc plant. a coal plant is far simpler to produce, geothermal plants are just as simple.

solar, is stupid, you can fight me on it but I think that currnetly you should just go wind. its literuily infintily cheaper, its way easer to cleanup, you can rcycle bassicly everthing on it cheaply unlike solar, and wind is going to be way easer to setup in mass, it takes up less ground space. downside is it takes up a lot of land, just like solar. geothermal, takes up as much as a coal plant, which is very very small, and doesn't nead a coal mine, which means its even smaller.

rare earth metals, silcon, and nickle mining is done commonly by china, who does it out of africa, who is not setup to have safe working conditions for those mines. this is a bad thing, a geothermal plant doesn't requier the same amount of rare earth metals as the other soruces of energy, solar and wind.

#

the arugment isn't 'oh we shouldn't switch becuase it costs money' is wrong, devloping countrys, china, included, are not in a psoitoin to switch. the US, and the west, have a lot to do with this problem, but its not just coprations, govemrints of delvoping countrys cannot just tell there people 'oh your going to starve because sombody in the USA with a smartphone seid you can't make any more coal plants'
the world is eterntily ruined not by the function of 'greedy deloping countrys' but by the fact that they have no other real choice,

#

wind energy is way more expesniive, then coal. so is, solar, not long term, but initailly its so expsnive that, it cannot be effectivly employed. geothermal will be the pwoer soruce that is used, once it becomes ecnomical, and it will be far better then nuclear, wind, or solar.

#

now solar, and wind on a small scale, are quite good. so is geothermal. coal, is not. and coal, will be replaced with geothermal.

remote ridge
#

Nuclear I think is an underated option

analog musk
#

nuclear is not underated or people would use it more often. its not just becuase people don't like it becuase they think of chernoble, china would use it in every case if it was cheaper or safer to oprate. the issue is if you try to make it in mass, for cheap, its dangours. if you try adn make it, small, and safe, and for a high price, its expensive, and that intial pay out doens't look good for investors waiting 20 years in the US to get a return.

its why micro nuclear power plants, are infintily better then big nuclear.

#

nuclear isn't really underated as much as misunderstood.

#

it cannot be a repalcment for coal, or oil.

dense shard
#

Nuclear is wonderful if expensive

#

And nuclear is absolutely a replacement for fossil fuels

analog musk
#

that is interily incorrect
and I never sied it wasn't good when expensive I seid it was expensive with makes it not a replacment for fossile fules

dense shard
#

Renewables coupled with more efficient tech, batteries, and a change in lifestyle is absolutely feasible

analog musk

Developed countries will help

#

Time to stop acting like we're alone. Climate change affects everyone

#

Politics have gotten increasingly stupid in relation to climate change imo

#

America, France, and the UK can afford multiple aircraft carriers. They can afford to help in the global transition to clean energy

analog musk
#

no they will not. they clearly are not helping. they will not help smaller nations. there is no need to help smaller nations. the USA, if you asked say one person from congress like dan crenshaw if we should 'give away our tax dollers' to ethopia and build a nuclear reactor there he will say 'f&&& no'

poltics are massivly powerful, saying they should just go away is a frever dream, they will never go away. geotheraml, is cheaper, and does the same thing nuclear does, but with far less waste and far less requiered edcatuioin. this invaldates the intire function of having nuclear power plants.

analog musk
#

the US woul dhave to educate them, on nuclear technoglys for them to be able to oprate a nuclear power plant, which by the way, the US is not going to do. poltics, again ruin everthing.

#

but that also means geothermal is the better if not the only option.

dense shard
#

Also it appears wind is much cheaper than geothermal

dapper zinc
#

what about the birdstrikes?

analog musk
#

that is like saying building a nucleaer bomb in 1930 was more expensive then using canouns and thats why they used canouns. the technogly isn't there in, only drilling. geotheraml, once drills are put out in more effect, will be infintily cheaper, creates way more power, and oprates with far less maintince.

dense shard
#

What about them?

#

Birdstrikes are red herring

#

What about ecosystem destruction brought on by coal?

#

Or oil spills?

dapper zinc

Im considering fitting one of those electric power steering pumps to my saab, maybe one from an mr2

#

little mpg bump

civic girder
#

I doubt it would increase mpg

charred depot
#

well id get better mpg if I just didnt have power steering

#

but that would wear the rack and the column wasnt meant for it

civic girder
#

Logically, there's still a load required to power the steering. It's just not directly driven by the crank anymore

charred depot
#

with the electric motor it isnt always pumping

charred depot
#

deleting the ps on my saab

civic girder
#

a rack and pinion is a rack and pinion

#

Not having ps on it doesn't make a difference on how it wears

charred depot
#

the joints on the column arent intended for that load

#

it was designed with power steering in mind

civic girder
#

People depower steering racks all the time

#

You just have to properly seal off where hoses would connect and fill it with proper fluid

charred depot
#

yes and some cars have issues with the column joints when you do that

civic girder
charred depot
#

the load on the U joint on a power steering column is way less than a manual steering rack one

civic girder
#

that doesn't make sense

charred depot
#

notice how light your steering is with power steering

#

you take power steering away and that joint has to deal with a much higher load and will accelerate its wear

civic girder
#

it's light because the turning of the wheels is assisted

charred depot
#

at the rack.

civic girder
#

The actual load should be the same. If anything, having power steering would increase the load since it's pressurized

charred depot
#

the load on the U joint is what you feel at the wheel

civic girder
charred depot
#

the steering wheel is transmitted to the rack through the U joint if you are putting all your force into the wheel that is the force that the U joint is dealing with

#

this is an issue which is actually serious on some porsche where owners delete the PS for the driving experience.

#

it can strip out the shaft that the joint goes onto

civic girder
#

I've literally never heard of that

#

it makes no sense

charred depot
#

well the load is literally higher without power steering

civic girder
#

How???

charred depot
#

If you are heaving on your steering wheel

#

that U joint is going to be heaving

civic girder
#

what?

charred depot
#

the load on those U joints is whatever you have at the steering wheel

#

without a power steering rack the load will be higher if you ignore ratio differences.

civic girder
#

But why is the load higher?

charred depot
#

are you trolling

#

genuinely

civic girder
#

No

#

stoic ledge

civic girder

charred depot
#

Look at porsche 944 power steering delete

#

"It's not easy. You will have to replace the rack and complete steering shaft. The joints in the shaft and all other things concerned steering in the PS 951 cannot be used without p/s. Some people just removed their belt and pump and ended up with even a broke shaft or rack. Quite a lot of work will be involved. "

#

Regardless of if this is an issue you understand the load on the joints is higher without power steering right.

civic girder
charred depot
#

"broke shaft"

civic girder
#

I don't see any threads saying that no ps on a PS rack will break it

charred depot
#

but you understand the load is higher right

vocal mural
civic girder
#

I don't see why the load would be highee

#

the ratio is still the same

charred depot
#

The U joint feels what you feel

#

If you are stationary or slow and try to turn the wheel thats alot of force

civic girder
#

It'd be like driving without a brake booster. Theres just an assistance that relieves the need for high input

#

I don't understand how it would lower the actual load on anything in the system

charred depot
#

You would feel the steering as heavier right?

#

Then so would the U joint on the shaft the steering wheel is attached to

vocal mural
#

About automatic gearboxes:
DAF (later known as Volvo) invented the VarioMatic gearboxes where you can drive as fast backwards as forwards, in the Netherlands they held competitions with cars equipped with VarioMatic gearboxes as you must drive so fast backwarts as possblie in the 1980's

civic girder
#

It's heavier because it's not assisted. Just like my power brakes analogy

vocal mural
charred depot
#

ok so its heavier on the shaft.

#

and heavier on the U joint

civic girder
#

But in manual brakes, it being heavier doesn't change anything. Just higher input.
I fail to understand why the load would be higher

charred depot
#

Take a paper straw hold the end of the loosely and spin it at the other end

#

Hold it tightly at the end then spin it and it will twist.

stoic ledge
# vocal mural Never but a FIAT with automatic gearbox

If you're talking about the Selespeed or Dualogic: those were just robotized manuals, those aren't the best by the nature of it. The main advantage was that they're relatively cheap compared to real automatics, and often got better fuel economy compared to the slush boxes available at the time

civic girder
charred depot
#

To transmit a force

#

A force that is higher if you dont have power steering

civic girder
#

I still don't see why the force would be higher

charred depot
#

because the force you are putting on the steering wheel is higher

#

how does that force suddenly become less at the U joint in your mind

#

the same deal applies to the rack design, the rack and pinion are generally much weaker on power steering racks than their manual counterparts.

#

on power steering racks the majority of the force is dealt with by the piston section

#

so the rack and pinion doesent have to be as built as manual racks

civic girder
#

the force on the u-joint should not change because the steering rack is still moving the same regardless. The added input at the wheel without ps compensates for the input provided by the ps pump.
The force on the rack and u-joints should be the same regardless.

charred depot
#

I honestly cant

#

If the force you are applying to the steering wheel is higher the load on the U joint is higher

#

that is a fact regardless of if its a power steering or manual rack

#

the force you are applying is what that U joint sees

#

The only situation in which this is not true is a column electric power steering unit

civic girder
#

if the ps pump moves the rack entirely on its own, there would still be a load on the u-joint, right?

#

I don't see why that load would be less with the pump working

charred depot
#

If your steering shaft was a twig would it be more likely to break with power steering or without it

charred depot
civic girder
#

what

charred depot
#

With power steering, the wheel is lighter

#

Less load on the shaft

civic girder
#

it feels lighter because it's assisted. The whole system is still moving just the same

charred depot
#

The assistance is applied at the rack

#

so the column doesent have to deal with as much force and therefor the driver

civic girder
#

right, but if the rack moves, then the column also moves too

charred depot
#

How can the force on the U joint possibly be the same when you are yanking on the wheel vs turning it with a pinky while stopped

#

The power steering rack makes the input "lighter" with its assistance

civic girder
#

if this were true, then why do people delete ps or drive with no belt all the time

charred depot
#

it is true

civic girder
#

if it was going to breakt shit, people wouldn't do it very often

charred depot
#

It doesent always but it has the potential to in some cars

civic girder
#

I still can't find evidence supporting that

charred depot
#

but it is a fact that the load is higher

civic girder
#

I can't find anything that supports that either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

charred depot
#

its a simple mechanical system

civic girder
#

indeed

charred depot
#

if steering wheel is "lighter" the load on the U joint is less I dont get how that doesent click for you

#

they are all on the same shaft

#

how does the force magically change from point to point

Yeah it’s my winter car and on E85 and a few basic upgrade I think 400hp is easy enough without blowing the engine. Just gotta clean fuel pump regularly to avoid the “Black Death” issue they had on E85.

I love it! Great sleeper build because no one expects it to do what it can with that AWD launch. Plus turbos are tons of fun (although I do prefer driving the 350z)

I literally bought mine on eBay with like 62k miles only mod it had is a blow off valve that I have found so far. (Fuel pump internals might be upgraded). Europe makes fun of the us not understanding roundabouts, meanwhile the English are like: that is how complicated the us thinks roundabouts are lets build it like that.

@vocal mural 50% of the Top 10 best selling cars in Europe last month are Stellantis... what's your opinion on that? 😛

Everyone buys mondeos here

Way more focuses than mondeos in the UK

Yeah I think Fiat is the only one offering actual 4x4 in the segment

#

New Aygo is now also the Aygo Cross or Aygo X with the X pronounced as Cross, but it's still the regular FWD + 1.0

#

Same what Opel also did with the Karl Rocks, Picanto with the R-Cross I think it was? All just FWD

#

Fiat is the only one with actual 4x4 PogChomp

#

But what I meant was, when you saw it previously you knew instantaneous the owner was a bad-ass and had the actual 4x4 version, now it might just as well be the plebian 4x2 version 😛

Since i know i gonna have to replace my shitbox within something like 2 years i already got a few cars in mind and damn panda 4x4 would be one of the i consider it because I just like it xD
