Well that conversation was... interesting. Went to the local subie dealer to see how much it'd be for them to remove the headliner on my Forester so I can install a roof rack, and the service tech said if I put a tent on the rack the roof would collapse. thonk

dense shard
#

Why do you need to remove the headliner to install a roof rack?

#

Also pretty sure it can take the weight of a roof top tent... just stay under the weight limit.

timber oar
#

Full exo frame time

#

That would be my solution xD

dense shard
#

Most cars can fit a roof top tent provided it's under the weight limit. Usually 100-300 pounds.

#

And apparently that's only when the car is in motion. Static weight limit is probably higher.

Depending on the car you can do big end bearings with the engine in situ

ofcourse it depends on the damage, if it has been continually used the crankshaft may be ruined.

It's only real positive is the fact that you can see the instrument panel.

# placid imp Expensive tho, they hold their value

Really depends on the model, engine and ofc sales

These V40's were quite popular for a period of time in our country as company cars, so they sold well. All those company car contracts (usually 4-5 years) end now, so there are quite a lot for sale, which reduces the sale price. However, the "bad ones" (like high mileage, low spec etc) often get exported, and the good ones like ours (popular/well equiped spec, low mileage) are being saved.

So for now they are relatively cheap as there are many, but from now on they don't really depreciate a lot anymore. Hell, we can probably sell if for more than what we bought it for Pogey Especially this one, as it has a Volvo VEA diesel instead of the earlier models which had a PSA diesel (less power, less tuning potential and less reliable)

I am going to be getting my first car in about a years time and because of New Zealand pushing for EV's, my only chance of having a V8 is probably having one as a first car. I have been looking at a lot of options but I have narrowed them down to these 4 potential candidates and I need opinions.

Option A) 2008 Lexus ISF
Option B) 2005 Mercedes Benz E 55 AMG SLN
Option C) 2010 Mercedes Benz E 550
Option D) 2008-10 Audi S5 4.2L V8

What do you guys think would be the best daily driver and also "drivers car"? I am leaning towards the ISF just because I think it looks the best, most reliable, good community, I am already familiar with the IS platform as my dad has had two in the past 5 years, and good fuel economy (I won't be able to pay too much for fuel as I am a student). #

Cheap cars here are manual, and always have been

#

obviously newer cars are phasing out manuals, so that's becoming less true over time

#

but manuals are usually the base trims in a lot of cars

#

I would guess the majority of the cars on the road in the UK are manual

#

75% of UK sales were manual in 2020, and that's new cars

#

according to one stat.

According to another:

Last year for the first time, automatic cars outsold manuals, according to new-car sales statistics compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. A total of 915,812 automatics were purchased last year, or 56% of 1,631,064 cars sold. To be sure, because of the pandemic, overall sales were sluggish in 2020. But in 2019, when total sales hit 2,311,140, automatics accounted for 49% of them.

stiff burrow
#

i think something like 5% of american car sales are manual

#

i think a lot of that is that the US has a lot of long, straight, flat roads so you dont really need to chose the "right gear" since you're just going a consistent speed with little stops

#

i live in a large metro area and most of the main roads i travel on are massive 4 lane roads with a speed limit of 40+

#

not a lot of windy roads

eager grove
#

It's not something I've ever understood. I imagine there are a lot of factors, but now people drive what they're used to

#

modern automatics are way better on average than they used to be, which is why things are changing in the UK

#

(I would guess)

#

But with EVs not needing gearboxes (except in their most absurd guise) the manual is going to die a quick death I think

I've always thought it would hilarious to have an EV with a manual gear box and a clutch, but only a single forward gear

#

Enthusiast cars are not better than late 90s early 2000s enthusiast cars.

#

You’ve got the 86, the Miata, everything else is expensive bullshit.

#

Mechanically worse in every meaningful way because it’s too expensive to have competent people make things, so we have robots and slave wage people from Eastern Europe and Mexico, or worse, American Georgia, assembling everything. Mouthbreathers can’t screw shit together properly so we can’t have physical knobs and buttons anymore.

#

Drivers aids are stupid, if you don’t want to drive take a fucking train.

civic girder
#

Modern cars are objectively better. Safety and convenience features, plus better power and emissions, etc etc etc

#

Not every car is built in places where the workers are underpaid or have terrible conditions

#

Robots are actually pretty good at assembly, and QC exists for a reason

#

People think old cars are better than new cars purely because new cars are boring.

#

New cars fall into the meta, so to speak. Almost every car on sale today fits a market where it will sell stupidly well even if its kinda shit

#

There are few enthusiast cars, and even the ones that do exist have some compromises that make them tolerable for the average idiot who thinks they want one.

#

Old cars are more daring, built during times of experimentation and when out there designs were the norm

#

A brand new Miata will wipe the floor when put against an 80s sports car. The suspension is better, the fuel injection and ECUs are better, etc etc.

#

But enthusiasts will generally prefer older cars in almost every situation. Because they are cheap, easier to modify, fix, and tinker with. But primarily because they have more character

lunar leaf
#

#

Track times

#

Sure equal conditions should be easy to replicate

civic girder
#

The fact that an ND is only 1 second slower to 60 proves that its likely just as capable on the track, if not more so

lunar leaf
#

Ooh 30 years of progress to MATCH THE 90s

civic girder
#

You also have to remember that many 80s sports cars had under 200hp, so an ND Miata will easily destroy them

#

I originally said 80s and you brought up 90s cars, fyi

#

I love my RX-7, and at its time was considered a fast car. Its 100hp was respectable and great. But its speed is laughable today, a god forsaken Ford Ecosport is faster than me.

#

Then you get into the rest of the car. The RX-7 has a solid axle and a watt's link that has binding issues causing snap oversteer. A Civic Type-R doesn't snap oversteer. A BRZ/86 don't snap oversteer, and also have IRS.

I never advocated for 80s cars, always said late 90s early 00s

civic girder

fair

lunar leaf
#

And most of your points well taken. Defending the new “Supra” though🤮

civic girder
#

But going back to the S15 vs ND Miata argument, this isn't about 25-30 years of progress matching anything. This is a light roadster with sub 200hp keeping up and/or beating a car with over 60hp more and worse weight distribution

#

an NB or NA Miata would never be able to come close to an S15. The Miata has come far enough along to punch above its weight

#

"light" being more relative since cars have gotten stupidly heavy anymore

#

its a miracle to find a car that weighs under 3k lbs in many cases
