when you are parking

and that alone should be able to hold the car in place, but you have a parking brake too

on an automatic it relies on the engine running to provide hydraulic pressure to engage gears

there is not a direct coupling between the engine and the wheels in an automatic like there is in a manual

an automatic needs to have the engine running to provide hydraulic pressure to engage gears, not to mention the torque converter which is a fluid turbine essentially

so when you put an auto in park, the parking pawl is moved into place to block rotation of the output shaft

it has the same effect as using a manual to hold the car @eager grove

They also use capacitors instead of batteries, which is way better for the use-case as they won't wear out and can handle high heats (as will happen being parked outside in the hot sun)
