civic girder
#

lol

#

they've been good in my experience

dense shard
#

nah joking aside. It should be enough for my needs.

#

Not like craftsman is better these days.

fathom socket
#

Joe mamma

dense shard
#

And I'm not dedicated/rich enough for snap-on.

civic girder
#

50% of my tools are from harbor freight, even if they are not "harbor freight brand"

#

harbor freight icon is just as good as snap-on, and way cheaper

#

but still, icon is expensive

dense shard
#

First thing to do when I do get the home. Fix transmission, change fluids, and change out the driver's seat. (for the Jeep)

civic girder
#

yea

dense shard
#

Then I can use it for practice. Install a light bar, and stuff.

civic girder
#

you could prolly do a lightbar at the apartment tbh

dense shard
#

I could yeah. Plan is to get one of those license plate mounts, and mount the LED bar to that.

#

Jeep wiring should be easy enough.

civic girder
#

Having installed fog light kits on multiple cars, its not hard.

dense shard
#

I believe it.

#

But it is a first time for me. Might as well spend all my cursing and sweating on the Jeep rather than the Toyota.

civic girder
#

I suggest getting a nice set of crimpers and wire strippers, as well as a heat gun and some heatshrink connectors

dense shard
#

noted, thanks

civic girder
#

beyond that, its just looking at wiring diagrams to see where you want to tap into the car's wiring

#

I typically either go into the cig lighter or the ashtray light

#

you at bare minimum want something ignition switched, and can wire up a switch

#

alternatively, you could just straight wire it to the headlights

dense shard
#

That sounds like a plan.

#

Well it'll be independent of the lights.

civic girder
#

Yea, that's how I've always done it

dense shard
#

Rather not get on a cop's bad side.

#

Main idea is to mount it behind the grill on the 'rolla at some point. Get more light on the road on those dark stretches. Deer exist, and they're out to kill me.

civic girder
#

I typically just run the signal wire out of the fog light/lightbar relay into the car, and then supply power for the switch from cig lighter/ashtray light/anything ignition switched and ground the switch inside the car.

#

that way there's fewer wires to get from engine bay to cabin

dense shard
#

Makes sense.

civic girder
#

you can also see if there's any switches on Amazon or eBay that could fit any blank switches on the dash

dense shard
#

lol not gonna worry about that.

civic girder
dense shard
#

Might just use the seat heater switch.

#

or replace that switch. Not like it works.

civic girder
#

Whatever switch you go with, doesn't really matter. You'll only need a 3 or 4 pole switch.
Most kits come with a switch, but its not like you have to use that either

dense shard
#

true

civic girder
#

I prefer using switches that flush mount to existing blanks in the dash, but I've also used stick on adhesive switches

dense shard
#

I am honestly trying to remember if the Jeep has any blanks at all.

civic girder
#

I wouldn't be surprised if it does

dense shard
#

Toyota has an entire row. And I'm wondering if I could straight up swap in a heated steering wheel.

civic girder
#

even my 95 Corolla has a switch blank

dense shard
#

Turns out the SE trim has the wiring for heated seats, they're just not hooked up to the switch/seat.

civic girder
#

I just adhesive mounted a switch to the blank for the fogs KEKW

dense shard
#

That works for me.

#

To think. I'll actually be increasing the value of the Jeep with this mod.

civic girder
#

What was kinda funny was the fog light kit I got for the Prius came with a switch meant for 2010 Prius, but everything else was for the 2009. I found a switch on Amazon that fit. But what really gets me is that the switch I couldn't use, fit perfect in the Previa's switch panel

civic girder
dense shard
#

I'm just wondering if I could just as easily wire up a heated 'rolla wheel.

civic girder
#

The fogs in the RX-7 are hooked to the cruise control power, so they can only be turned on when the key is in the on position

dense shard
#

Theoretically it's just a switch and wheel away from working. should be plug and play.

civic girder
#

yea, you could tap into any ignition switched power and wire into the wheel + a switch

#

shouldn't be too hard

dense shard
#

Not even that. It could be plug and play. There may already be wires behind one of teh switch blanks.

#

... I might check tomorrow tbh.

civic girder
#

Its possible

dense shard
#

My back can't be in any more pain as it stands.

civic girder
#

Something neat I've done before as well, if the car has an aux port you can wire up a bluetooth module that sends sound over aux to the radio (assuming you don't already have bluetooth in the radio)

#

Works awesome in the Prius.

dense shard
#

That's actually good to know. Might do that if I ever get a car with just an aux port.

civic girder
#

I've also been told you can get bluetooth modules that plug into the antenna plug on the back of a radio, and some can have passthrough so you have bluetooth audio and still have radio

I would wire in a single 10" or 12" sub or bass tube

its not just down to tires

dense shard

If Chinese quality and durability become worth buying, then that's on the competition to keep up.

MGs are partially developed in china and partially in UK, although its probably more china leaning

dense shard

The entire British car industry is where it is due to it's own actions.

strong kindle

Baojun (simplified Chinese: 宝骏; traditional Chinese: 寶駿; pinyin: Bǎojùn; lit. 'Treasured Horse') is a Chinese automobile marque owned by a joint venture of General Motors and SAIC Motor, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile.
The Baojun marque was established in 2010 as a cheaper alternative to existing GM brands Chevrolet and Buick, which are also on sale ...

dense shard

British Leyland made America look good.

stoic ledge

It's different from what happened to MG

strong kindle
#

baojuns cars and mgs cars are the same

stoic ledge
#

There they just bought the MG name and slapped it on other models

fathom socket
dense shard
#

so MG is owned by SAIC and GM...

#

so MG is ... GM.

#

wow

stoic ledge
#

Volvo just gets funding from Geely but can do what they want (within limits ofc)

#

Same with Land Rover and stuff, it's owned by Tata but in no way an Indian car

dense shard
#

and Geely gets full access to all of Volvo's IP and platforms.

stoic ledge
#

SAIC is also part VW so it's a SAIC-MG-GM vehicle

#

Sure but that's to be expected, why not use a platform which has already been worked out

dense shard
#

The platforms were co-developed is my understanding.

stoic ledge
#

It's probably cheaper to use a more high-end platform and invest 0 more in development than creating a new platform which is worse in every way

dense shard
#

Also owns Lotus.

fathom socket
#

ah wait, they closed the longbridge tech centre in 2019

so its all china now as far as i can tell

tesla fanboys claiming their car is the future of transportation as they frantically try to reach for their steering rectangle with one hand and swipe furiously on the touchscreen to change gears with the other all in order to just make a 3-point turn

#

jokes aside, i don't say this lightly: this needs a recall

#

this is going to kill people

#

you think i'm exaggerating? we're talking about the one and only interface you have to directly control where the car goes

#

and tesla just made it objectively worse, just for the sake of it looking cool

#

i had always rolled my eyes at the other decisions tesla made which made the driving experience worse for the sake of looks, like a high-end smartphone designer

hello!

#

i have been building a box in my car this week

#

it is nearly finished

#

it takes you longer than you think it would to design, fabricate a frame from angle iron, cut some aluminium sheets to the correct shape, and get the hinges and lids to line up well enough to be waterproof against rain

#

its one length across the top, three horizontal bolted into the back of the cab, 2 uprights vertically from the edge of each wheel box, and some more along the floor and box floors to pull them up square to the aluminium sheet

#

plan is to have a second battery on top of one wheel box, and air compressor and a small air tank on the other side

#

with the middle just being lockable storage, it can easily fit maybe 4 to 6 20L jerry cans

#

with space behind the jerry cans, as the cab bulkhead angles forward at the bottom, to fit tow ropes, jumper cables, anything else

#

i dont weight much but it doesnt even bend when i stand on the box so its whatever

boreal pivot
#

Question - why can my car accelerate much faster to ~40mph in second gear if i put my foot down, yet if I did so gradually it would want me to change gears. .

civic girder
#

what

#

I'm very confused by your wording

#

and I'd need more information to formulate a theory

boreal pivot
#

Right, if I put my foot completely down, it accelerates rlly fast to 30mph+ easily while in second gear,

But if I accelerate slowly, it doesn't have that kick and the car asks to change to third etc (there's an indicator on the dash board)

civic girder
#

is it a manual?

boreal pivot
#

Yes

civic girder
#

you're taking off in 2nd?

boreal pivot
#

No, taking off in first, like a normal person, switch to second, put foot down, there's a kick and it accelerates hella fast

#

If I accelerate gradually like when normally driving, there's no kick,

#

(Reason I'm asking is my cars insurance is cheaper than my dads car, yet my dads car does not do that, making my car more prone to crashing it ig)

I don't really have a single favorite as different makes and models serve different utilitarian purposes for me, but I do prefer reliable models from Japanese automakers. Current daily driver is a Crosstrek, but I've enjoyed driving a Corolla, Golf, and Accord before.
If money, parking, and paying multiple insurance plans weren't objects, I'd want to see a variant of the Mini Cooper Countryman, an older Chevy Impala, a '67 Corvette Stingray Convertible, a couple of Kei Cars, and an off-road ready Hilux in my driveway.
