Cadillacs only really America

#

I don't even think they're in the UK

stiff burrow
#

One thing bmw does nice is the interior

pastel ridge
#

Yes the wireless Android Auto is so amazing

stiff burrow
#

That Cadillac should have a better interior for what it costs but that is not really the focus of it

pastel ridge
#

I think the fourth series is the best-looking BMW that is not a m

#

I really hope they make a 2022 4 door

stiff burrow
#

Why wouldn’t they

pastel ridge
#

Because the new generation hasn't had a four door gran coupe it's been rumoured but we haven't seen one yet only a coup

stiff burrow
#

Oh

eager grove
#

@low carbon haha, yes mate. $3.50?

stoic ledge
#

That's very accurate, yes

low carbon
#

add a few more zeros then you're on the money!

low carbon
#

it's literally just going to look like the i4

pastel ridge
low carbon
#

i didn't say that the upcoming 4 series gran coupe was going to be electric. all i said was that it was going to look like the i4. doesn't exactly look like you were burdened with an overabundance of education does it.

pastel ridge
low carbon
#

plus, you can place a deposit down for an i4 in australia already.

#

@eager grove this guy

pastel ridge
#

When I was at Motorline BMW they had nothing about pre-ordering I 4

low carbon
#

explain this then?

eager grove
#

It may not have been available then, or they may not be pushing it

pastel ridge
#

They don't even have a release date

eager grove
#

The next generation Gran Coupes are going to look worse than the current gen ones

pastel ridge
#

Yes

stoic ledge
#

The 4er's in the right colour/trim actually aren't that bad imho

low carbon
#

we're past the golden age of bmw design

stoic ledge
eager grove
#

Yeah, that's the best angle I've see of one

pastel ridge
#

I think my one looks pretty good

eager grove
#

they definitely are doing a 2022 4 door (5 door) 4 series

#

I agree

charred depot
#

return to E39

eager grove
#

But that doesn't have the stupid grille at the front

pastel ridge
#

Just wish I got the m brake calipers

eager grove
#

I think I prefer the look of the A5 sportback to the 4 series gran coupe

#

but not by a lot

charred depot
#

much smexier

eager grove
#

If I had the cash to get one and I was goign to get that sort of car, I'd probably get the Arteon but just because it's got a bigger boot than either

pastel ridge
#

I think the a5 look ok but not the biggest fan about the Chrome

#

I thank you could probably get it blacked out

eager grove
#

Yeah you could get a chrome delete if you cared that much - I think it looks ok

pastel ridge
#

Is this still the modern interior

low carbon
#

just get the black optics package

eager grove
#

Yeah I think so

low carbon
#

yes

pastel ridge
#

I'm not the biggest fan of how the screen looks everything else looks fine but

charred depot
#

car looks too comfortable, id probably fall asleep

eager grove
#

The screen does look like an iPad stuck to the dash

low carbon
#

the new 3/4 series interior isn't way better

eager grove
#

And the digital dials are way better in the Audi than the BMWs

pastel ridge
#

Yes my my just dials but no weird screen but the digital

low carbon
#

i hate the touch only input on the b9.5

pastel ridge
#

They're still screen but

#

I'll get an image for you

low carbon
eager grove
#

iDrive still has the scroll wheel

low carbon
#

yes

#

i know lol

eager grove
#

:p

low carbon
#

bruh

eager grove
#

that's the...current Audi generation?

low carbon
#

yes

pastel ridge
#

This is a dials I have sorry for the screenshot can't find them in discord files

eager grove
#

Oh that's nice - so yo udon't have the backwards tachometer

pastel ridge
#

Yes

#

It's just like normal dials

low carbon
#

no map in the middle though

#

only directions

pastel ridge
#

I have it in the heads up display

#

My car also has the speed sign recognition camera so handy

low carbon
#

congrats

#

you get that in a yaris so nothing special

pastel ridge
#

Is it the one that uses a Cameras or just uses Map

low carbon
#

camera

#

it also has the nice feature where you only have to press one button to change the cruise speed to the speed sign which your generation car doesn't do if i recall correctly

#

current gen does

pastel ridge
#

It automatically changes the cruise control

#

Our one can do automatic change

low carbon
#

sure it does

pastel ridge
#

Yeah it does I think it only in the innovation package

#

But

low carbon
#

i doubt that

pastel ridge
#

Why

low carbon
#

all the new bmws i've done required me to press a button to change it

#

x5 x7 3 series 5 series

pastel ridge
#

Yeah I press one button and it will change to the speed

low carbon
#

well that's not automatic then is it

#

the bmw system is the best since it will set to a certain percentage over/under which mercedes doesn't do

pastel ridge
#

You press one button and it changes like the Toyota

charred depot
#

Yeah imagine having to click a button, not good enough

low carbon
#

yes

#

you said your bmw automatically does it, which you've just contradicted

charred depot
#

id say its relatively automatic

pastel ridge
#

It automatically does it to the speed limit as in it reads the speed signs and then press one button to change it and see the pressing at 5 times to do it manually and it means a system sometimes does it wrong she don't stop really fast

low carbon
#

well that's not automatic if you still have to press a button...why is this even up for debate

pastel ridge
#

One of the streets that was around us had it speed limit lowered 20 km and if the car change 20 km up for where the speed limit used to be it would quickly accelerate the car talk about a month to learn the new speed them without seeing the signs because the signs were badly placed if it just automatically did it it would be quite annoying

low carbon
#

i'm not saying whether an automatic system is good or not, but you calling it automatic is just wrong

pastel ridge
#

But it does automatically change the speed it would change to

low carbon
#

but do you have to press a button

#

yes

#

so it's not automatic

pastel ridge
#

It's called automatic by BMW so it's automatic

eager grove
#

Zach I feel like you're being unnecessarily antagonistic here

low carbon
#

the automatic system is on the new gen cars

eager grove
#

also, what are you gonna replace the Golf R wagon with?

low carbon
#

mk7.5 haha

eager grove
#

haha

low carbon
#

has all the necessary upgrades i want...led headlights, digital dash, upgraded infotainment with carplay

eager grove
#

So you have a Golf wagon and a Kodiaq VRS, right? Does your SO drive one of those most of the time?

low carbon
#

yep. golf is my daily

eager grove
#

Black package on the A5 sportback definitely the way to go

#

Still has stupid fake chrome exhausts out the back

low carbon
#

yep. hate the lower trim surrounding the radar sensors

eager grove
#

meh, doesn't bother me

low carbon
#

nah they're real outlets on some models

eager grove
#

I don't get fake exhausts

low carbon
#

when they're in the usual satin chrome it looks awful

eager grove
#

it's like...in a few years no cars will have exhausts. They look fine wihtout them, why bother

low carbon
#

looks shit mate

eager grove
#

Yeah it does

#

sorry, I got confused

#

that's what I was saying, that the black pack is the way to go

#

If only they ditched the satin chrome fake exhausts as well is my only point

low carbon
#

they're fake surrounds

#

but the actual end is inside

eager grove
#

yeah

#

still looks dumb

low carbon
#

i like it

eager grove
#

If it was up to me, I think that's what I'd drive

low carbon
#

only the 40 tfsi...

#

45 tfsi quattro is the sweet spot of the range

eager grove
#

It is - that's the one I'd want

#

but it's not available in the Audi configurator

low carbon
#

had one the other week, great daily but when the start/stop engaged when the car is stopped it sometimes shakes the car side to side

#

usually it'd turn off around 12kph which is nice as going to a stop is super smooth

#

don't have the drivetrain trying to go forwards

eager grove
#

To be honest, you can get a 2017 S5 sportback for under £25k, so I'd probably get one of those

#

provided you can find one without the AWFUL red interior

low carbon
#

nobody orders those here

eager grove
#

all four of the cheapest ones on autotrader have the red interior

low carbon
#

90% black interior, 8% grey, 2% red

eager grove
#

I don't get it

low carbon
#

because they know that they won't sell them easily lol

eager grove
#

all of the car reviewers are like 'wow, this red interior is so nice'

#

and I'm like

#

but in four years

#

it's going to look absolutely shite

low carbon
#

just maintain it once a year

eager grove
#

I mean I just hate it new, they look shit

#

If I had £25k to spend on a car, and I didn't have my current issue (that my wife sits between two car seats in the back) then that's the car I'd have

#

Look at this shit, man

#

Only £155/year to tax, and it's got a better listed fuel economy than my piece of shit Seat Leon

low carbon
#

lol

charred depot
#

hate that the saab is nearly £300 for tax, but thats nothing compared to the insurance at my age

#

just a extra added bonus cost

eager grove
#

Aye

charred depot
#

considering we get nothing from paying the road tax

#

literally only did some road maintenance because the house builders paid for it

eager grove

Where you based?

I could probably sell it for what I bought it for

I'm in 2, technically 3 or 4 depending on how you want to define "car-specific"
One is for RX-7s and rotary cars in general, the other is specific to my generation of RX-7. Also in a discord for a smaller car youtuber, and 98% of what me and my friends do is car related so my friend's discord could be considered "car-specific"

Do you think that Dodge should bring back the Viper as an ultra high performance all electric american-made supercar. All-wheel drive. With a 1000 mile range. 2500 horsepower. Street legal. With an electronic automatic transmission. With tons of performance. And with a maximum speed a 365 mph. What do you think. Do you think this will be a big bold move for Dodge. To reintroduce the Viper as an electric vehicle?

The Viper was cool. But only small percentage of people can afford any of those cars. Heck! I still want a Gen1 Mercedes AMG GTR. And more would say that's old news now. Might be able to find one at 99k somewhere. It's been replaced by the AMG GTR Pro and Soon the Black Series.

how do you get wireless android auto to work?
i literally have tried everything to no avail
i double checked tho, the car's head unit is compatible with wireless android auto, as is my phone
all the "directions" are like "plug it in to let android auto start for the first time, and then follow the prompt on screen" when legit no prompt exists and all i see is just normal, wired AA
i tried clearing all my AA data off my phone and the car and mutually forgetting bluetooth etc but i just cannot make the prompt show up
there's a common trope in these "directions" that wifi has to be enabled on the car, which i did do, but i didn't connect it to an AP, so i'm unsure what people want me to do with wifi

#

@fathom socket it can power 9.5kW in some versions - you can use it as a generator on a jobsite, but yeah it also has 2 way power - you can use it as a battery pack for your home. Initially it'll take over in case of an outage and then charge up more, but they're going to put out a software update that will make it so that it'll act like a powerwall - charging on cheap electricity and then powering your home during the hours of expensive electricity

fathom socket
#

but

#

does it really save you money in long run?

eager grove
#

Depends what you mean

fathom socket
#

betteries wearing down

eager grove
#

the fact that it can act as a generator is utility that gas vehicles simply don't have

fathom socket
#

I mean my unclas passat has something like that

eager grove
#

Not at 9.6kW.

fathom socket
#

well

#

it's 300 watts

eager grove
#

yeah

#

so that won't power a house

fathom socket
#

but

#

I could build a power generator out of my focus

eager grove
#

I'm just saying it's cool. Is it economical? In most cases, probably not.

fathom socket
#

sadly it's DIY and not straight from the store

#

I mean if I'm gonna to get my car scrapped at some point because it can't legally drive

eager grove
#

Like if it's more expensive than a gas equivalent then even if your electricity was completely free, you'd need to drive 120k miles to save the $15k extra the vehicle would cost you

#

and given that electricity isn't free, then it's probably significantly more than that

#

But if you get one with the $7500 grant, then you're talking more like 80 or 90k miles I guess

#

So if you do 15000 miles a year and own vehicles for 6 years

fathom socket
#

it's just not that much worth buying electric car for me

eager grove
#

I wasn't trying to convince you to buy one

fathom socket
#

1 kWh of electricity costs as much as 1 liter of gas

#

at least for my car

eager grove
#

merely pointing out that it's cool, and, crucially, by adding utlility (and performance) that gas trucks don't have, and by styling it like a normal truck, then they're doing a really good job of making it appeal to other buyers

#

my electricity at night is like £0.18 a kWh, gas costs £1.36/litre here

fathom socket
#

here's 0,14 eur per kWh

#

but I can't charge car from home

eager grove
#

I mean if you can't charge a car from home

#

it's a moot point

fathom socket
#

and the charger under my home costs 0,53 eur per kWh

#

and gas is 0.51 per liter

eager grove
#

holy crap gas is cheap

fathom socket
#

I mean my car runs on alternative fuel

eager grove
#

those numbers were based on US gas prices. The F-150 isn't sold here, so it's a moot point

#

but if you're running a trad petrol car, and you're buying a new car, electric cars do make a lot of sense here

fathom socket
#

they don't make any sense for me here or wouldn't fit me at all

eager grove
#

I think it's going to be a long ass time before electric cars make sense for everyone

fathom socket
#

yeah

#

I don't want to end up like that tesla attached to a diesel generator

#

wall

#

that was back when we had like 5 chargers in the entire country

#

I think it's not yet the time to start switching to electric cars

#

but I would buy maybe an electric motorbike for the city and nearby stuff If I would move to Switzerland

#

I would still need a proper petrol car to commute between countries

eager grove
#

There's a few factors

  1. electric cars will get better
  2. electric cars will get cheaper
  3. infrastructure will improve
#

Governments are setting deadlines of 2035-ish to make it so that all new cars have to be electric

#

They're going to have to invest billions in infrastructure to make that happen

fathom socket
#

I want the batteries to be safer

#

I'm still scared of them after having bunch of cells randomly bursting in to flames

eager grove
#

Pretty rare I think--my guess is on average that electric cars are safer

fathom socket
#

it might be

#

we need also a method to put out electric cars from fire

eager grove
#

The Hyundai ones have had that problem for sure

#

true

fathom socket
#

they say

#

"but gas cars also catch on fire"

#

but it doesn't reignite like electric cars

eager grove
#

but fire crews and shit carry the fire extinguishers required for that sort of thing

#

whereas they don't for electric cars

fathom socket
#

I think sometimes is not enough I thinkl

eager grove
#

Yeah, I'm agreeing with you

fathom socket
#

or that stuff doesn't prevent batteries from reigniting

eager grove
#

I'm saying that when attending a car accident, the fire crews carry the stuff for gas cars

#

but not for electric ones

fathom socket
#

that means more equipment on the board

eager grove
#

yep

fathom socket
#

we need to wait before we start forcing people to switch to electric cars

#

but also

#

before we do that we should eliminate fossil fuel power plants

stoic ledge
#

EV's are fun and all but the electricity has to come from a green or renewable source

fathom socket
#

my tyres came

#

and they are soft and somewhat sticky

#

meanwhile my old ones are super hard

eager grove
#

for two reasons:

  1. air pollution - air quality in cities like Bristol in the UK where I live is killing people in real time. Moving the pollution out to power plants (which also have less NOx and particulate pollution) massively helps
  2. Power plants are far more efficient than an ICE engine, especially burning gas, so you end up with far cleaner air even if you switch to fossil fuel power stations
#

Grids are improving to be more renewable (unless you're Germany and you stupidly shut all your nuclear power plants)

#

AND and and and and

#

if more people have home power walls/battery packs like the F150 lightning

stoic ledge
#

Your just moving the problem that way :)

eager grove
#

Yes

#

to somewhere where it can be less of a problem

#

and if you have powerwalls/battery packs/F150 lighnings

#

then you can flatten out the peak in power usage

#

which means you have to use fewer of the much dirtier stations

#

because those only get switched on at peak times

stoic ledge
#

That's kind of true, not like the Lightning is the first car to have V2G... But renewable energy is still a minority in the energy production even in lower usage moments...

One major step forward would be to go nuclear, which is immensely green, no pollution etc

But yeah, having a car which can redeliver to the house at peak times does take a load of the infrastructure

eager grove
#

Right

#

The UK grid is pretty green, and getting greener

#

My point is that saying that it's only worth moving to electric vehicles once the entire grid is non-CO2 emmitting is ludicrous

#

emitting

eager grove
#

A nuclear power phase-out is the discontinuation of usage of nuclear power for energy production. Often initiated because of concerns about nuclear power, phase-outs usually include shutting down nuclear power plants and looking towards fossil fuels and renewable energy. Three nuclear accidents have influenced the discontinuation of nuclear powe...

stoic ledge
#

Apparently the UK is doing quite alright at renewable energy yes

eager grove
stoic ledge
#

~40%

fathom socket
#

meanwhile poland

#

and it's getting expensive

eager grove
#

lol

#

yeah, the UK is pretty good, and the new stations are majority green for sure

fathom socket
#

I think over 60% of energy here comes from coal

#

oh god

#

so it's like 74% coal, 9% gas and 15% renewable

#

I would say it's a bit different what I've expected

eager grove
#

I mean the biggest problem is China

fathom socket
#

I know

eager grove
fathom socket
#

but it might explain the bad air quality

eager grove
#

But that's somewhere where electric vehicles are really helping. The air quality is awwwwwwwwwful obviously

fathom socket
#

I think here it won't

eager grove
#

and electric vehicles are heavily subsidised, so they're doing a good job of getting people to switch

fathom socket
#

just hate having heating/power plants next door

#

A lot of pollution comes from burning fossil fuels in the cities here

eager grove
#

It's a global problem that needs global solutions, for sure. Electric vehicles are not the be all and end all, and they certainly aren't a replacement for greening up the grid.

#

But that doesn't mean it isn't worth switching until the grid is green

fathom socket
#

but I think it's still worth focusing on other bigger problems than trying force people switch to electric vehicles

eager grove
#

Depends what you mean by 'focus'

fathom socket
#

like homes using inefficient coal heaters to heat homes in populated areas

eager grove
#

No what I mean is

#

Like it isn't the case that it's only possible to solve one problem at a time

fathom socket
#

maybe we have thinkg about 2 different things

eager grove
#

Yeah maybe. Like no one uses coal heaters here, for instance

fathom socket
#

here some people still used coal heater from like 1800's

#

or early 1900's

eager grove
#

The statement I was disagreeing with was 'we shouldn't force people to switch to electric cars before eliminating fossil fuel power plants'

#

And I think that's true, but I think it's reasonable to stop people from buying new petrol/diesel cars before that

fathom socket
#

maybe because we live in different coutries

#

and we have different point of views because the different problems we have

eager grove
#

yeah

#

like in a 70% coal country, you need to green up your grid a lot before considering moving the cost of going green onto the consumer

stoic ledge
#

Idk how the UK got to ~40% renewable energy tho... according to the IEA, it's:

  • 10% coal
  • 30% Natural gas
  • 10% Nuclear
  • 5% Wind/solar/hydro
  • 10% Biofuels and waste
  • 35% Oil
eager grove
#

Those wind/solar/hydro numbers are old

stoic ledge
#

Yeah 2019

fathom socket
#

still

stoic ledge
#

Latest data the IEA has 🥲

eager grove
#

That may also represent the number of power stations

#

remember that there are a lot of peak power stations, most of which are off most of the time

fathom socket
#

I've expected Poland have less than 14% renewable energy and less than 74% of coal plants

eager grove
#

Over the last year, according to those numbers, renewable + nuclear is 41%

#

plus 7% biomass

fathom socket
#

would be cool to have a nuclear power plant there

eager grove
#

where?

fathom socket
#

Poland

eager grove
#

Nuclear powerplants are just so expensive

#

they're building a new one in the UK and it's like a 5 year £20billion project or something

fathom socket
#

meanwhile they tried to build one here and people protested

stoic ledge
#

eager grove

stoic ledge
#

People protest everywhere "bEcAuSe It'S sCaRy"

fathom socket

meanwhile we are surrounded by nuclear powerpalnts and everything will come here anyways

eager grove

#

which I think is cheaper than Nuclear, actually

stoic ledge
#

Well 🇳🇱 recently build a windfarm which was intented so power a region the size of Amsterdan, then Microsoft came along and was like "Oi can we use that for our datacentre", and they were like "Sure, f* the inhabitants of 🇳🇱 "

It always sounded like I'm doing burnout

charred depot
#

my front left has shoulder wear from roundabouts I think

#

most people just straightline the roundabouts here but I find it funny to take the extreme outside line.

I love the fact that they have a car channel

I think I found a perfect spot to get in to car collision

elfin sequoia
#

Ive already got that figured out

One of the lights in town has this really weird bug where sometimes all the light are red, sometimes the opposite direction gets the turn arrow, sometimes no one gets a turn arrow but one light is green to let traffic thru,

Best part about the lights? They run backwards so the arrow comes after the light

why have one set of tricolours on the grill when you can have two

Ford should put v6 ecoboost into a mustang

dense shard
#

That wouldn't make the V8 look good.

flint sable
#

remember the SVO?

dense shard
#

Yes, and the GNX.

#

There's a reason Ford hasn't put the ecoboost V6 in the Mustang.

flint sable
#

Underappreciated

#

Probably have sent this image before but whatever i

It was a special car.

They sure are interesting

solemn inlet
#

Time to replace you think? Cyl 4 was causing the missfires

elfin sequoia
#

Blow on them backwards theyll be good as new 👌

vocal shard
#

Yeah 🤘

fathom socket
#

got a saab turbo x and a 95

low carbon
#

that is a 2cm wide rock that punctured my tyre over the weekend

#

had to get it replaced

fathom socket
low carbon
#

yep. bought a proper tyre plugging kit for next time

#

no space for a spare tyre in the boot, obviously better than a diy repair

fathom socket
#

From what I've heard fix a flat isn't the best selant

low carbon
#

oh the branded stuff? it's just whatever vw group crap came with the car

fathom socket
#

oh

low carbon
#

pretty sure all that tyre goo stuff all sucks

fathom socket
#

I would normally buy a tryre plug

low carbon
#

that said, today it seems to had finally cured and held pressures perfectly fine

fathom socket
#

but I decided to keep a spare tyre

#

even if I have a gas tank where spare tyre should be

#

I just shoved in between the seats

#

but I think I would replace the spare with full size

low carbon
#

yeah, not going to keep a 20" wheel in the boot

#

just happens to be that the first car without a spare wheel has to get a puncture, smh

#

would've been fine if it was a nail since the tyre has a thin self-sealing layer but that only is for punctures smaller than 4mm

fathom socket
#

I guess that's an upside having 14 inchers

#

even if spare is 15 inch

low carbon
#

just shit luck i guess

#

one time I hit a pothole that bent my rim

low carbon

happens a lot with golf r owners

elfin sequoia

Ill stick with old school rope plugs thank you very much

low carbon

one of the stock rim styles are notorious for bending and cracking

fathom socket
#

sometimes situations tyre sealant can be a better option

elfin sequoia
#

Theyll literally outlast the tire you put them in lmao

low carbon
#

i don't really see a situation where it'd help much

#

if your tyres already have that self sealing layer

elfin sequoia
#

Also never use slime

low carbon
#

the proper ream and plug repair kits are way better

low carbon
#

my mate that works at the tyre shop i use even said that there was no way unless i took the tyre off

elfin sequoia
#

Slime youll never get a shop to replace the tire

#

Its a full job

low carbon
#

they said they could but they just hate working on tyres with it since it smells bad and gets everywhere

#

for that tyre if the sidewall wasn't buggered i would've been able to get it vulcanised for nz$80

#

i already had booked new tyres to be fitted tomorrow but they got them today so when i brought it in for my mate to have a look at repairing it we ended up just replacing them

charred depot
#

nasty stuff, ive heard it can take the paint off wheels too

low carbon
#

also eats into the tyre

elfin sequoia
#

Ruins tpms sticks to everything

low carbon
#

didn't ruin my tpms thankfully

#

no idea how much the sensor costs but it'd be stupid since i'd need the dealer to program it in

elfin sequoia
#

Probably like $40

#

Pretty sure they just automatically connect dont they?

low carbon
#

nah for my car you have to do it via diagnostics

elfin sequoia
#

Eh basically but you still gotta push a few buttons

low carbon
#

eh not terrible

#

anyway lesson learned

#

it is bloody nice to have a spare tyre
