Any recommendations for a cheap starter car?

#

Something that'll do 0-60 in less than 5 secs

#

And isn't a gas guzzler

fathom socket
#

a cheap starter car?

fringe lake
#

lol yeah just for fun

#

under 10k

fathom socket
#

you'll definitely have to look in the used market for something that good and that cheap

fringe lake
#

Eh used is fine

fathom socket

any companies in mind?

fringe lake

Anything that won't break down after a month

fathom socket
fringe lake
#

Hmm preferably something not american

fathom socket
#

something that can go 0-60 in under 5s, all while being less than 10k, cheap to maintain

fringe lake
#

I was thinking a modded e36

fathom socket
#

bmw's with oem parts aren't cheap to maintain if i'll be honest, BUT THEY'RE A HELL OF A RIDE

fringe lake
#

Yeah, I saw OEM rims go for $2k

#

Nice ones at that

fathom socket
# fringe lake I was thinking a modded e36

let me be honest, getting modded cars is like getting another man's love and joy, does it really bond the same way with you as it did with him? you'll have to kinda redo everything he's done to it, or just carry on with his set of mods

fringe lake
#

No, modded as in I mod it myself

fathom socket
#

and maintaining a modded car is very fun if you have the means to it

fathom socket
#

buying it bone stock isn't cheap either

#

hmm

#

finding it mint is the problem

fringe lake
fathom socket
#

but if you search hard enough, and are dedicated, trust me it'll be a hell of a ride

fringe lake
#

I can get one for $6k easy

#

200k KM obviously

fathom socket
fringe lake
#

Ah

#

Yeah mint is hard

fathom socket
fringe lake
#

But 200k ones are easy to find here, its like $7k or so for a "nice" one

fathom socket
fringe lake

Eh, as long as it runs and doesn't break down all the time its fine

Its only a starter for like 4 years lol

like

remote ridge
#

just take off the doors completely while they are unfrozen and they wont get frozen shut next time

charred depot
fathom socket
#

no way to charge it

#

is super expensive

#

and charging stations are more expensive than gas

#

if I had any near me

gusty river
#

EVs definitely aren't for everyone yet, hopefully they're getting there

fathom socket
#

hybrid is the best compromise

gusty river
#

Depends, all the maintenance of both types of systems which is a bit annoying.

fathom socket
#

just living in a city and having pure EV is just a pain

gusty river
#

That's actually the ideal case for an EV, as long as you have charging at home or work.

fathom socket
#

I just love that govrment is forcink people to switch to EVs

#

while we don't even have infrastructure

gusty river
#

That's partly to force the development of said infrastructure. It's working well where I live (BC, Canada). Very rural, but becoming very possible to travel anywhere with an EV.

fathom socket
#

and like 98% of people don't even have a way to charge them at home here

#

but still

#

people here drive like 1000-2000 euro cars

gusty river
#

98%? That seems a bit high to be true

fathom socket
#

when most of the city is just buildings like this

#

the problem is that there are no garages

gusty river
#

That would make some sense then (98% still seems high). Without a powered parking spot, things are rough for sure.

fathom socket
#

I don't know ho much

#

bot for sure 90%

#

or more

#

If I could get a motorcycle license

gusty river
#

You don't need a garage per se, it's just the most common easy way to have power nearby.
Like a hotel I was at didn't have "charging" available, nor underground parking or anything like that, but they had outlets for block heaters. Usable for charging.

fathom socket
#

would buy an EV bike

gusty river
#

The infra will have to come eventually then. We're not sure how it'll happen, but it's not like gas stations popped up everywhere immediately either. At least the electricity is typically somewhat nearby, it's a matter of running access to it.

fathom socket
#

the issue is that I can't run extension cord over the street because that vilates the code

gusty river
#

Yeah no it won't be by extension cords :p

fathom socket
#

and also I live on private property

#

and gating an outlet installed would be so much cost

#

and the fact that I'm still too poor to even own a 1000 euro car

gusty river
#

That's why the changes come from the government level. Not meaning to get into a discussion on how governments run, but working into construction code and such at least ensures new construction is accounting for available charging. Retrofitting older buildings will always be a problem (see: hot water, electricity, asbestos)
Ideally that cost is spread out. Good news is you're getting the rich to pay for it first, probably, the early adopters of EVs.

Well my point still stands, my neighbors had a Mazda 6 which was mechanically fine, but the rust was just horrendous. Not even that many miles on it

charred depot
#

the ~2010 mazdas and what not suck for rust

#

3's that i liked are mostly gone and what remains oozes with rust

stoic ledge
#

Yeah but it's weird, if you look at literally any other car from the same area there's no rust at all

#

Ok maybe surface rust on the undercarriage but nothing deep or structural

charred depot
#

sills on the NB mx5's are basically water tanks if you arent careful

stoic ledge
#

Yeah Pogey

charred depot
#

my car has plastic side skirts so if it gets sill rust no one will know therefore its not a issue :^)

stoic ledge
#

OOF

charred depot
#

the rust on my car is pretty savable without welding if i put the effort in

#

ive got some paint for the civics subframe and just need to fix the abs then it might be able to skimp through another MOT

stoic ledge
#

Well let me tell you this.... We owned a 2003 Peugeot 307 from 2007 to 2017. The paint on the trunk lid on those isn't great, so it started to let go a bit. Underneath, it was showing a bit of (surface) rust. So my dad bought a stickey chrome strip at the local car store, cut it to size and put it on there. The other week, I spotted the car for same again, and the chrome strip was still on there, doing it's thing Pogey

charred depot
#

heh

#

our civics got rust visible from the outside in a few places mostly from not having crashes repaired

stoic ledge
#

The 307 didn't have any damages as far as we know Pogey

split notch
#

so they don't treat the underbodies of their cars for salt-induced rust

charred depot
#

the models that come here get a bit more protection

split notch
#

which is why you really really should have your car undersealed properly on import, and have it redone every few years

charred depot
#

but if you import it yeah

stoic ledge
#

Well they know where the car is going, depending on the region they should put something on it

charred depot
#

imported mx5's are basically open to elements

stoic ledge
#

Or even the dealer should coat it

split notch
#

Not if it's a private export...?

#
  • I've never known a UK import company to not offer a undersealing service on import.
stoic ledge
#

Well it also happens to cars which were meant to go to "here" (Europe)
