Must be a long time ago Citroen used button turn signals, not in the last few decades (unless I'm massively wrong)

Capacitive touch buttons are also in products from VW and LaRo/RaRo now (maybe even others, idk)

#

Not for indicators luckily

gusty river
#

Yeah, touch controls are used in a lot of cars for things like volume or radio or whatnot, but not critical driving actions like gear selection or signals. And people have hated those existing touch controls for a while now, with some makers now going back to physical controls.

#

Model 3 pushed the limit, moving most wiper controls to the touchscreen and requiring multiple taps. They had a physical button on the end of a stalk you could use for single wipe or for wiper fluid. Model S now won't even have that.

#

So Tesla is making a shittier version of your typical F1/GT racing wheel

fathom socket

dense shard
#

The F1 Wheel is tragic for daily driving and any steering input that requires you to take your hands off the wheel.

IE: more than 180 degrees of turn.

I think hiding essential controls in a touchscreen is peak stupid.

#

Tbh, not a bad interior of the Tesla imo. Nice and modern. Cool idea for the touch buttons on the wheel, but I can imagine it getting annoying if you accidently move your hand across them. Half wheel doesn't seem too bad, just grab from the bottom when turning. I rarely ever have my hands at 10 and 2, mostly 9 and 3 with my thumbs on the thing(forgot what it's called, lmao). Musk plans on autopilot being fully autonomous this year if whatever needs to get passed gets passed. So seems like this update
is more oriented towards what will happen in the future. And if people are really annoyed with the half wheel (and it doesn't get changed when the update actually gets released to the public) I imagine there will be plenty of aftermarket items to make it a full wheel. Lol

civic girder
#

I would not call the Tesla modern or nice

#

How am I supposed to use the buttons if I'm wearing gloves in the winter? How am I supposed to know how the car will pick what direction to drive in?

And there's no fucking way we get fully autonomous driving this year. Especially not functional and safe enough to just dick around and sleep/text. There's absolutely no way.

#

It's wrong when you need to modify your car to make it usable and ergonomic. I also doubt there will be much of an aftermarket for the steering wheels. You'd have to design around Tesla's big brain play of deleting the traditional stalks, and that's a tall order for any sane steering wheel company

#

Tesla was bad, and now it's on a downward spiral. If anything, Elon is cementing that he is completely insane and constantly on some pretty powerful drugs

#

There was no need to reinvent the steering wheel or the operation of the vehicle. Autonomous driving, and any of the associated technology, is nowhere near where it needs to be for any of this to make sense

#

Besides, a fully autonomous car has no need for a steering wheel or any controls as the car straight drives itself. So, if anything, Elon is trying to compromise on a halfway point that looks half baked and not thought out all the way

#

To me, it looks like he's designing cars that he wants. But is failing to take into consideration the people who actually buy cars. None of the Tesla's are ergonomic, user-friendly, and only a few models are barely affordable. The pricing makes zero sense for what you get. The Model X? I wouldn't pay more than $40k, yet for some god forsaken reason the MSRP is $80k+

#

Does not look or feel like a $80k car.

#

The EV market is completely fucked up right now. There's barely 2-3 decent looking/feeling EVs, but they're at least decently priced and don't have complete garbage range. Tesla has range, but nothing else going for them. And it's not long before other EVs start catching up in range, while destroying in quality and price

night current
# civic girder I would not call the Tesla modern or nice

If people didn't like it, people wouldn't buy it. The beta for full autonomy seems pretty promising, and Elon is pretty confident in it being released this year. Whether that actually happens or not idk. Clearly people aren't allowed to sleep or text while using it. That shouldn't change from the way autopilot is used now.

Also, a fully autonomous car should have a wheel and controls, at least in this point of time. People would be pissed if it didn't. That's like buying a Lamborghini only not being able to drive it, or something you can more relate to, buying an rx7 not being able to drive it and experience the doritos that are supposed to be controlled by your feet and hands.

fathom socket
#

Tesla Motors already is modern & nice because it does kick butt in the "establishment" of the automotive industry

#

And for all-electric vehicles in general, Tesla's are the objects of reference for all others.

night current
#

Personally, I wouldn't say "nice". They do have a lot to improve on, such as quality of their vehicles, customer support, etc...

The irony is that if we decatted 80% of the cars on the road today, it would still have less environmental impact than burning coal, shipping things by sea, and air travel/shipping

#

I highly doubt anyone will be able to cough up the funds required to develop EV tech to even a basic "good enough" level, nor the funds to support a charging infrastructure on par with traditional fueling stations

full bough
civic girder
#

Not really

full bough
#

Seems like this is just a bad faith argument and you just don’t like Tesla at this point tbh

civic girder
#

Charging is slow, cost is high, availability is poor, and EVs are purely at a niche consumer level right now

full bough
#

Okay.

civic girder
#

You can't go out and buy an EV for $25k and expect it to do everything a comparable $25k normal car can.

#

There are no good affordable EVs yet. Most EVs are geared towards people with money, who just want a new way to flex their wallet with a fancy status symbol

#

And the ones that the average consumer can afford, aren't good enough for the average needs

night current
#

I dont think everyone wants to flex a status symbol when they buy a Tesla. 🤔

civic girder
#

I'm down for EVs, but I strongly believe that the approach that's being taken is all wrong

civic girder
night current

full bough
civic girder

full bough
#

civic girder

On one hand iPhones actually are a decent product. Beyond range, Tesla's are pretty garbage

night current
#

Question, does everyone who buys a car thats more than 25k flexing a status symbol?

full bough
#

Dude just has something against Tesla. It is what it is

night current
#

Alright, that's what I was thinking too.

civic girder
#

Lol, I used $25k as an example as that's a solid price a large majority of people buying cars can afford.

#

It's when you spend over $40-45k on something, unless it's a performance car, that you're needlessly over spending

#

And yes, I suppose you could say I have something against Tesla. Their cars have abysmal quality control, made even worse by looking at the price you pay.

#

They have had, and continue to have, a multitude of catastrophic and silly issues. And when your car breaks, it's difficult, expensive, and extremely inconvenient to get it repaired

#

Buying a used Tesla is quite literally one of the worst decisions you can make, thanks to a lot of Tesla's anti-consumer practices. Which are geared towards artificially increasing new car sales by making used cars a bad deal

#

And just the design overall is poor. The interiors are poorly designed, full of big brain ideas and poor ergonomics. A lot of the "features" and controls are pointless and end up doing it worse than the traditional method

dense shard
#

If I had a Tesla, I'd be doing 0-60's all the time because it's fun. I don't think buying an expensive car is a status as much as you're thinking it is.

dense shard
#

Looks like a website for cars about cars?

#

My best advice is to use multiple sources when doing research about cars. For example their review of the Corolla HB has one glaring digression from literally every other review I have seen, heard, or read.

#

It also has electric steering, which is the most dissatisfying mechanical element of the car.

Lifeless on center and too heavy and numb off-center, the electric steering is the worst thing about driving the Corolla Hatchback. And with the lane-keeping and lane-centering-assist systems engaged, it is a constant source of irritation.

#

Too heavy is something you will never hear about the Corolla. The steering is light. Most reviewers would complain about it being "too light, which is great for commuting but yadda yadda..."

#

So yeah. Multiple sources/sites/channels to keep them honest, and yourself informed. Also user reviews aren't something I'd trust. It's either a nice generic glowing review... nice if you want someone to support your tastes... or people have an axe to grind and have literally nothing nice to say.

civic girder
#

yea, user reviews are confirmation bias

#

but can be helpful in the sense that you can look at the distribution of good to bad reviews

#

if, out of a large pool of reviews, most of them are bad; then that product is likely bad

Being a Ford the water that collected did something fords are well known for

ember dove
#

i liked me old zetec zx2

#

shitty rust bucket that lasted like 3 weeks though

fathom socket
#

My car looks so bad

#

I would say like it was washed with sandpaper

#

But I love the heated windshield

ember dove
#

i hate all the salt and sludge that gets on my car daily now

random hearth
#

Awww @ember dove you had a variant of the escort

ember dove
#

i did!

#

it was quick

#

shifter was sloppier than a hondas

fathom socket
#

Speaking of shifters

ember dove
#

and the exterior

fathom socket
#

It seems my gearbox is pouring oil out of its seals

random hearth
#

@fathom socket if you have Instagram search for logicvpc that will show what I deal with and have been dealing with for 2 years now

ember dove
#

i quickly switched to a 500$ explorer that lasted 500x more miles lmao

random hearth
#

@ember dove I'm from England we had proper escorts haha

fathom socket
#

I did 30k km with my focus with only basic maintenence

#

And a welded starter motor

#

At least I know a new technique to start my car without pushing it

random hearth
#

Erm welded starter motor @fathom socket never come across that before

civic girder
#

is it bad I kinda like the interior of that ford coupe

fathom socket
#

I think it seized due to high current and not turning

#

because battery went out

random hearth
#

@civic girder nope its not a car is what you make it and how it makes you feel

civic girder
#

very true

#

shits more basic than any of my cars lmao

random hearth
#

@fathom socket ahhh you had a starter with a bad solenoid then

fathom socket
#

after installing new battery

#

it didn't start

#

and the old one was dead

#

I've just removed it

#

opened it up

#

seen nothing wrong other than the brushes are on the end of thier life

#

and it's working perfectly fine

random hearth
#

@fathom socket @civic girder fancy seeing a car i have not long finished for a customer i have before... mid and finished pics

civic girder
#

idk

civic girder
#

beyond getting a new color, I don't really see what was done

#

nor do I understand why

random hearth
#

people with too much money

#

it was done in peelable paint

#

so when you get bored of the colour just peel it off an its orange again

civic girder
#

.....

#

-_-

#

seems stupid to me

random hearth
#

like i said people with too much money

#

also fabricated a custom titanium exhaust for it

civic girder
#

what advantage does titanium have over aluminum or stainless

random hearth
#

longevity and heat dissipation

civic girder
#

interesting

wraith geyser
#

Lighter too

random hearth
#

much lighter

random hearth
#

but its hard to work with

fathom socket
#

just love that interior

it's ergonomic enough for someone tall like me

random hearth
#

steering wheel is on the wrong side XD

civic girder
#

no, its on the correct side

flint sable
civic girder
fathom socket
#

the warm amber glow of the checc engine light

random hearth
#

lmao @flint sable its unbelievable how many people want peelable paint but its 7k+ to have it

civic girder
#

I'm pretty familiar with the check engine light glow

dense shard
#

Because a good paintjob costs twice as much.

civic girder
#

both my 95's have emissions related codes

wraith geyser
#

dead cats?

dense shard
#

Sanding, priming, good paint, clear coat, and whatever other work goes into that.

dense shard
#

And as far as exotics go. Repainting tends to lower the value.

fathom socket
#

still better than whatever this truck that I drive is showing up

civic girder
random hearth
#

@fathom socket ford check engine reset if you dont have a diag machine ....

#
  1. Close all doors. 2. Turn the ignition key to position II. 3. Simultaneously press the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal and hold for a minimum of 15 seconds @fathom socket
fathom socket
#

I had everything deleted

#

it just comes back

civic girder
#

on my Toyotas, you just pull the EFI fuse and wait 10 seconds

#

then put it back in and start

#

clears the codes

random hearth
#

@fathom socket did they give you a p code when it was reset

civic girder
#

but they come back since its still a problem

fathom socket
#

no

civic girder
#

need to EGR delete and jump pins on the one, and need to actually figure out what the issue is on the other

fathom socket
#

I had my car prepped for inspection

#

because I still need my car so I can get to my truck driving

#

I'm not spending 4 hours in a bus

civic girder
#

if one car is broken, I have 3 other ones to take to work lel

wraith geyser
#

EGR deleted with custome ECU tune?

civic girder
#

why would I try to tune it

#

that sounds like an awful idea

random hearth
#

lol @civic girder i have 3 on my drive and 2 in storage

wraith geyser
#

EGR delete without tuning is pointless

civic girder
#

mmm yes, let me tune my OBD1 ECU on an economy car

wraith geyser
#

Lol then why do the delete?

random hearth
#

the 1.8 zetec does not tune well at all but they do turbo very well

civic girder
#

to get rid of the code and not pay $150+ for a new EGR

#
  • reduce heat and help the wiring harness last longer
wraith geyser
#

How does deleting EGR remove the code?

fathom socket
civic girder
#

you yank that shit out, and then jump connector pins to trick the ECU into thinking the EGR is working

#

tbh, wouldn't even have to take it off

#

can literally just paper clip short some pins

fathom socket
#

and doing like 1300 km trips with a car that I really don't know if it will break

civic girder
#

but I will take it off for whatever weight reduction it can give me

wraith geyser
#

what car is it on?

civic girder
#

a Corolla

random hearth
#

vvt?

civic girder
#

nah

#

its not even real dual cam

random hearth
#

that just means it will last longer 😄

civic girder
#

Its a Toyota, it'd last forever either way

wraith geyser
#

what year?

civic girder

95

wraith geyser

Could be just VSV being plugged

had to clean mine on the 88 supra

random hearth

i have a mk2 mr2 its in storage for years at a time, always starts and drives after neglect

civic girder

idk what the evap controller has to do with egr

wraith geyser

Nah in that year they had vacuum switching valves to turn on and off the EGR.

oh those pos

#

I had like 3 of those break on my RX-7, didn't need em

#

I don't see a reason to bother fiddling with it

random hearth

@civic girder oooo i like rx-7 had one sold it then got an rx-8 worst decision i ever made

random hearth

that's when you abandon ship

Oh that happened not to long after luckily my latest mrs (5years so far) loves cars too

civic girder

oof

random hearth

Mk2 golf(or rabbit to anyone US) then a mazda 3 mps and finally my daily a mk5 golf fsi

civic girder

I don't have a picture of all my cars together, unfortunately. Have to have one parked at a buddy's house for now until I can move out

random hearth
#

Then in storage I have a Toyota mr2 a jaguar xj6 executive and a mk1 fiesta xr2

civic girder
#

which MR2

random hearth
#

Mk2 turbo jap import ( tbar) I had it imported in 2007

civic girder
#

nice, SW20s are cool

#

I'd rather have a sc AW11 tho

#

I've got supercharged roots, ig you couldsay

dense shard
#

I'm just hoping i can get my hands on a winter beater this year.

random hearth
#

I had a good deal with it so I took the chance

civic girder
#

beaters are fun

#

I've had just as much fun with my Corolla as my RX-7

random hearth
#

best crs ever

dense shard
#

My 'rolla ain't great in the cold.

civic girder
#

interesting

dense shard
#

And I'd rather not drive her in the winter if I can avoid it.

random hearth
#

sorry getting merry so my typing is suffering

wraith geyser
#

I have a 87 rolla

civic girder
#

The RX-7 starts great in the cold, so its interesting that a modern car is having issues

dense shard
#

So goal is old Jeep or something off roady is in the cards for me.

#

Cold staring is no issue. I get heat within 5 minutes.

#

But icey conditions and snow are just... oof.

random hearth
#

my mk2 golf is on a 2 barrel carb it starts in 0 Celsius with no choke old cars are unbeatable

civic girder
#

interesting.....

dense shard
#

Speaking of ice. Finally felt my car's stability control kick in. Absolutely weird feeling hearing/feeling your car apply brakes 4 different ways to keep you on the straight and narrow.

civic girder
#

cause my Prius drives just fine on snow

#

odd that a new Corolla has difficulty with the snow

wraith geyser
#

my 87 starts in -25 with relative ease

random hearth
#

wow dont swear @civic girder

civic girder
#

what

dense shard
#

I imagine it could be a power band quirk.

civic girder
dense shard
#

But I have to beyond baby the car to get moving without lighting up the TCS.

#

And generic salt worries remain.

civic girder
#

sounds like you can't drive?

wraith geyser
#

lol

civic girder
#

if I can drive on snow/ice without lighting up TCS in a car with instant tork

#

then you should be fine in a similar car but with less low end tork

#

I can definitely understand the fear of salt tho

random hearth
civic girder
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

I like it

#

tfw new supercars are also hybrids

random hearth
#

tbh i got to drive a range rover sport hybrid a few days ago it surprised me

civic girder
#

sounds disgusting

#

imagine driving a range rover

random hearth
#

i deal with anything land rover at work because where i work has the contract for repairs

civic girder
#

oof

random hearth

from brand new unregistered to 30-40+ years old we are located not far from landrovers main hq , i live not far from solihull where it all began and they still operate from

dense shard

I can drive just fine.

I need to EGR delete my diesel

But there are times where the speeds I have to travel at to not slide are a bit low.

So yeah. I can drive fine.

tawny basalt

@fathom socket More affordable than it used to be, but the hardware has gotten a lot better as well

All you're really swapping is the powertrain/electronics and the suspension stays intact

fathom socket

So basically 80% of the things that go wrong and you save alot of the fuel running costs

Seems pretty damn legit

tawny basalt

There's EV swapping, and then there's making it indefinately reliable

Pretty damn high mileage I suppose

This one spent it's last working days in Orkney I believe

fathom socket

Only fixing transmission leaks for now

charred depot

thinking of saving our honda as a project

#

it needs brake lines hard and soft, basically every bushing, oil leaks sorted, sill rust, subframe rust, rear suspension arms and abs troubleshooting.

#

oh and the other strut done on the front heh.

fathom socket
#

my car needs new seals for the transmission, new valve cover gasket, the entire rear suspention needs to be rebuild and the steering rack needs to be rebuild

charred depot
#

dont know what the oil leak is caused by on ours its not too bad at the moment though

fathom socket
#

my car may or may not have some oil leak but i dunno if its real or not

#

makes a weird noise when turning on too

charred depot
#

the alternator and battery is also gone :^|

fathom socket

I don't really think that the oil leaking from the heads is a big problem

#

but the transmission is

#

and the rear suspension in impossible to fix

charred depot

:^ |

fathom socket

I thinks it's more like I need entire rear suspention

#

and just the suspention is something like 600 euro job

charred depot

on my car its piss easy to do the rear suspension

fathom socket
#

why did ford put a multilink suspention inside eco box

charred depot

i mean its a reasonably big car

fathom socket
#

but still

#

it's expensive to fix

charred depot
#

labour i guess maybe

fathom socket
#

especially that I can't salvage crap from my suspention

#

everything needs to be replaced

charred depot
#

if its so bad that everything needs replaced its been long overdue for years

fathom socket
#

it's because rust

charred depot
#

beh if you need the rear arms and even rear subframe theres plenty of donors at this point

fathom socket

I think I can replace struts

but that's it

#

I can't replace rear bushings

charred depot
#

your car doesent have struts on the rear so its easy enough

fathom socket
#

what you mean doesn't have struts?

#

oh wait

#

I mean

#

shock absorbers

#

or damper

charred depot
#

you might be able to find the entire rear assembly for your car

#

they go for like 100-150 here ofcourse not brand new

fathom socket
#

the driver side suspension is knocking

#

I would need to ask if they could swap

#

and I need a new brake caliper for the rear

charred depot
