The twist-beam rear suspension (also torsion-beam axle or deformable torsion beam)

what about Trailing-arm suspension

#

Anyone familiar with late 90s audis? Looking at a 99 a6 avant

fathom socket
#

Generally there should be no rust on the body. If there is, that might indicate damage from an accident. Ask the owner about this (if they're the first one).

Front suspension is a weak point on these cars because the engine hangs in front of it and it's under a lot of stress. Check that thoroughly. If it has electric windows and mirrors, check that they still work. Same for AC, cruise control. Check that the ABS still works and that it doesn't pull to the side during hard braking.

Best to also bring a laptop with VCDS and a ross-tech connector if you have one or know someone who does. Check for errors.

I can tell you more about the engines if you tell me which one you're looking at

#

The 1.8T is obviously great but it has little things that are guaranteed broken on 90% of them that cause them to not run right. If it idles weirdly, drops revs at idle, you're likely looking at vacuum and/or exhaust leaks, MAF sensor failure, PCV issues, throttle body issues

stoic ledge

Did Americans get the 1.8T in the '99 A6? Don't think they did

#

Not sure

stoic ledge
#
North American C5 A6 models received the 2.8-litre, 30-valve V6 engine, the 2.7-litre "Biturbo" V6 (also found in the B5 platform S4, 250 PS (180 kW; 250 hp)), and the 4.2-litre 40-valve V8 petrol engine (300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp))```

stoic ledge

fathom socket

the 2.8 NA V6 is ok but slow. The 4.2 V8 sounds good but also pretty slow

#

6MT are rock solid but idk about the tiptronic

#

quattro adds complexity obviously

patent basalt
#

What engine is most likely in it? I think it’s a 2.8 but not sure

#

I asked but no reply yet

fathom socket
#

Probably the 2.8. It's not really fast but if it's taken care of, they are solid. Make sure the belts have been serviced and be aware that the 2.8 and 2.7T have timing chains as well (timing belt drives the exhaust cam, exhaust cam drives the intake cam) same as on my 1.8, same as the 1.8T. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5DInSycuBI

#

The chains will lengthen over time and the tensioners can fail (plastic rails can break, if it doesn't hold oil pressure properly anymore due to carbon buildup or failed seals, it won't be able to tighten the chain enough)

#

if it makes a ruckus for a few seconds at cold start, could be that.

#

The lifters also fail occasionally

civic girder
#

tbh, I should probably do the timing chain on the Corolla

patent basalt
#

My second option is an 04 Volvo S60 R

fathom socket
#

Volvo are so nice, my dad owned one your 10 years.

#

5cyl?

#

nope different model

#

bummer

#

yhea

#

@patent basalt but if it's not too small for you, the A4 B5 1.8T would definitely be worth a look, great little cars (though I might be biased)

patent basalt
#

The R looks like a pretty damn nice car

#

I’d like a somewhat decent sized car I have a baby due like anyday lol

fathom socket
#

A4 comes as Avant too. Otherwise a Golf isn't as small a car as it looks LUL

patent basalt
#

I’m kinda leaning more to the Volvo right now being an R if it wasn’t I’d probably go more Audi, the Audi is a manual and I prefer that but I’ll drive an auto if it’s a nicer car

#

I’m a huge fan of the R from what I’ve heard they are pretty quick?

dense shard
#

Depends on the generation

#

Nice upshot is all Golf Rs are made in Germany

#

Supposedly. USDM GTIs are apparently Mexico sourced.

fathom socket
#

pretty sure he means the volvo R?

fathom socket
#

Audi A3 2.0 TFSI > Golf GTI IMO (same engine). Plus you got the quattro option if you want it and it comes as a hatch

#

I don't think Audi manufactures anything in Mexico

#

I wish they'd do like a Golf R25 or something and put the 2.5 TFSI 5cyl from the RS3/TT RS/RS Q3 in it. I want that engine in everything. It's the best one they've built in recent years IMO.

patent basalt
#

Yeah is a Volvo S60 R

#

I know nothing about these things I’ve only owned chevy and Ford for years

dense shard
#

ahhh a Volvo.

Classic Volvo products of the era.

Lexus LS, Acura TLX to name two.

Lexus GS, RC, and LC.

#

IS as well I believe. Tho GS is going away.

#

And LS I think shares a platform with the Toyota Crown. Tho that is also considered a luxury product.

fathom socket
#

To be fair those brands are virtually nonexistent where I live. Acura isn't even a thing here and I've maybe seen one or two Lexus this year

dense shard
#

They're big in the US.

#

Since we're spoiled for choice, if I can afford a luxury car, I can afford to be picky.

Toyota Crown much?

At least you got the RS 6 Avant this year

dense shard

And if that comes with 2 doors. I'm trading in my HB no questions asked.

#

ugh

#

I guess that's great for the 5 people who will buy it?

fathom socket
#

IIRC they're sold out everywhere because demand is so high

dense shard
#

Car people freak out when a performance wagon comes to the US, but market realities slap that down so hard.

#

Haven't heard that at all. I'm guess their limited run is sold out in the US.

#

I'll apply the same level of salt to Mercedes.

fathom socket
#

I don't think the new RS6 is comparable with the previous performance wagons you had. It's basically a Lambo wagon

dense shard
#

Pretty sure we had a lambo Audi in the past.

#

S8 or S6 had a V10.

fathom socket
#

yeah C6 S6 and RS6 had V10s

#

but not as wagons

in the US at least

Absolutely horrid car to own... but hey it's got a Lambo engine.

Holy fucking shit what the actually (literal) flying fuck WHAT https://youtu.be/32I0Qso4sDg

More than a decade-long rivalry between friends and rally drivers Travis Pastrana and Ken Block has culminated in a passing of the torch. Travis Pastrana is trying his hand at his own Gymkhana film, shot and edited by the same crew that makes all the Gymkhana films: Hoonigan Media Machine. Who’s the real winner here? You!

Time to get funky. Ordering a different switch for my fog lights, and ordering a bluetooth module, for the Prius

#

Gonna also order a Haynes manual, primarily for the wiring diagrams.

#

Gonna need to see where interior lighting wires are to splice into for the switches/bluetooth

#

and find something ignition switched to power the bluetooth
