#

Which is something I actually like

dense shard
#

Well... Mercedes and BMW aside.

errant dagger
#

I prefer hard aggressive angles

turbid vale
#

i mean if you look at the 2019 ford taurus ist still rounded as hell it just has more pronounced divots

errant dagger
dense shard
#

Ford isn't a great example tbh. Their current Taurus is last decade styling.

turbid vale
#

actually

#

we have have shifted into boxes

#

or rounded boxes on everything

dense shard
#

I wouldn't say rounded anything anymore. The new Corolla is pretty snazzy all things considered.

errant dagger
#

I do own a 2014 ford focus aswell, its an alright car. Nothing to special really, but the looks aint that bad.

#

Titanium Sport edition so makes it look a little better

turbid vale
#

gotta have more dive planes on suburban vehicles cause reasons

#

more scoops and naca ducts

errant dagger
#

I don't mind that

dense shard
#

Angles and aggressive lines are the way to go.

#

And no superfluous ducts/vents/slashes.

turbid vale
#

but when I go get my groceries I expect my Toyota Camri to go 140mph both ways

#

It needs the schoops

dense shard
#

Get a manual like I did.

#

also ban front license plates

turbid vale
#

I can't deal with manual transmission

#

always been goofy with the clutch

dense shard
#

New Corolla makes you a hero.

#

It's probably the easiest car to drive.

errant dagger
#

Why is Auto's so popular in the US?

dense shard
#

Convenience.

errant dagger
#

In Europe its mandatory that you learn to drive with a manual for your driving test.

turbid vale
#

the 2020 corolla sedan?

#

really?

dense shard
#

That's a hatchback.

#

My hatchback.

errant dagger
#

I dont really get how its that convenient. I mean sure it removes an element of driving, but its not like manual is hard.

#

And its way more expensive if it fails.

#

Usually anyway

dense shard
#

America is the land of 1000 mile journeys, traffic jams, and eating on the go.

#

Also modern automatics are smoother, just as reliable, and much better on gas.

errant dagger
#

I mean if you're travelling 1000 miles I'm sure like 90% of that will be on the highway where you dont shift a lot anyway.

turbid vale
#

shit thats like....here to california every summer

dense shard
#

Till you hit a construction zone.

#

ask me how I know

turbid vale
#

actually take that back as soon as you get close to california the traffic starts even on the highway

dense shard
#

Automatics are 100% more convenient.

errant dagger
#

Then you downshift a couple of times then upshift again, big deal

dense shard
#

Not that easy.

#

Cause traffic isn't going fast enough to do the couple of times.

#

You're feathering your clutch for an hour or so.

#

Maybe you'll get into second.

turbid vale
#

you gotta be out in the dakotas

dense shard
#

I am now.

errant dagger
#

You're making it into a problem which it isnt tho, how can we drive effectively here in Europe then? Where most people are on manuals

dense shard
#

I don't see what the issue is with automatics?

errant dagger
#

I agree an auto is a lot more comfortable if you have to deal with traffic jams daily tho

turbid vale
#

Europe has some pretty decent stretches of road though

dense shard
#

They're easier, more convenient, and better on gas.

turbid vale
#

its not all dense city

dense shard
#

Very few people care about "driving pleasure."

#

Europe goes for manuals because they're cheap.

errant dagger
#

That is true

dense shard
#

Cars are expensive enough as it stands.

turbid vale
#

in the US as soon as you hit a big city like vegas or LA, especially LA shit just stops

dense shard
#

In the US. You're spending northing of 40 grand anyway. Why go for a less convenient option?

errant dagger
#

Yeah I can imagine that, I've never been to the US

turbid vale
#

I remember being in traffic off the highway and into LA for like 2 hours

dense shard
#

Forget Vegas. Think Chicago or Atlanta.

turbid vale
#

hell naw

dense shard
#

And once you hit the open roads. An automatic transmission will be better on gas.

turbid vale
#

and forget about their spaghetti bowls as well

errant dagger
#

I would never rent a car if I went to the US

turbid vale
#

they don't make anything faster just more jammed up

dense shard
#

US rentals are fun. Get the Impala.

#

And just... lounge.

errant dagger
#

I've seen to many vids on random police pullovers where they get aggressive and as a foreigner you do one wrong move and they pull on you.

dense shard
#

If you aren't breaking the law, they won't pull you over.

turbid vale
#

You don't like people here constantly renting dodge chargers?

#

the 2018's

#

they're pretty cosey on the interior

dense shard
#

It's not like they're V8s.

errant dagger
#

@dense shard Breaking traffic law in a foreign country could be done unintentionally tho, missunderstand signs, different traffic habits / laws etc.

dense shard
#

Read up on it, and you'll be fine.

turbid vale
#

@dense shard true

errant dagger
#

Yeah true I would, if I was to go there and drive.

dense shard
#

I drove in Japan for a few years. No issues outside of a few traffic habits thing.

#

Turns out people ignore speeding cameras there.

#

Sometimes.

turbid vale
#

they do the same thing in south korea

#

cause they just automate their tickets

#

for whatever reason we haven't implimented that here

#

but they got plenty of ticket cameras in south korea

#

but people ignore it and just speed anyway

errant dagger
#

Thanks for the chat folks, ima head off. 4:11AM here now.

dense shard
#

Automated cameras should be banned.

#

They don't make for safer roads, local governments don't get more money, and private information isn't protected.

indigo coral
#

Agreed

#

Automated cameras are also unconstitutional

dense shard
#

local government surprised to get bill from private company that runs speed cameras

#

lol

American cars don't suck?

#

Also tell me how the F150 isn't dominating

civic spoke
#

If Americans vehicles are so good. Why aren't they dominating all markets?

#

GM, FCA, Ford only account for something like 45% of the US market.

#

Everywhere else it is much, much worse.

#

Btw. Their market share in USA is shrinking.

normal temple
dense shard
#

Easy answer. In the 50s and 60s, American automakers had no real competition. Toyota, Honda, Nissan either didn't exist, were still making motorcycles, or had just started selling in their home markets.

#

The Koreans were literally rebuilding from smoldering rubble.

#

VW had maybe two cars in their lineup.

#

Dominance of a market doesn't make your products good.

civic spoke
#

American automakers are mainly looking at short term profits.

dense shard
#

I'm not entirely sure I agree with that anymore.

#

I don't think they're doing a great job preparing for the future, but the entire industry is shifting towards crossovers.

#

Why invest in a marketshare that's shrinking rapidly... especially if your company has struggled there in the past?

#

Fact remains that Americans love their big stuff. SUVs and trucks are the main sellers right now, and the big three are 100% investing properly into those markets.

#

okay, this video is... pulling facts out of their ass.

#

GM has a 13% market share in China. Second only to VW. I wouldn't say Europe has runaway from the US in the biggest automarket in the world.

#

And saying the "Europeans dominate the US market" is disingenuous at best.
In order from biggest in 2019: GM, Ford, Toyota, FCA, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Subaru is below 5%.
VW at 3.8%. Daimler and BMW have 2%, then Mazda and Tesla make up the rest.

#

The Europeans in total make up maybe 10%... and those brands very very notably exclude Peugeot, Renault, and Citroen.

#

Also more to the point. VW has spent the last 30 years in the US trying to actually make a splash. They've failed on every account. They never gained the traction they have elsewhere. Question is why and how.

This video has a lot just... it feels as if he's bashing American makers for the sake of it. "American automakers failed to adapt to foreign markets."
Great... if you ignore Ford of Europe who still produce the Focus and Fiesta? And the flags in the video... Japan and India? Both of those markets are wildly native focused... no one has broken into Japan, and India is even worse. Suzuki absolutely dominates that market. 50% marketshare last I checked.

#

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

night current

I don't think Tesla's are that bad tbh. Considering that Tesla is such a new company and caused such a stir in the market is a pretty awesome accomplishment in of itself. Definitely pretty far ahead on technology, but I wouldn't say 6 years behind in being a car. If it were that bad as a car, no one would own a Tesla. (Except for the extremists who want to change to full EV asap, but that is besides the point.)

#

(Bad = Cars 6 years ago. Not that they are actually bad. I just didn't know of a better way to put it.)

vagrant dune
#

Cars in terms of driving honestly haven't changed that much in 6 years

#

Drive a 2014 audi A4 and a 2020 audi A4 and they feel essentially the same

dense shard
#

In that case Tesla's build quality is 6 generations behind. Problem is that everyone buying Teslas have been the gung ho extremists.

#

And new company or not, their QC issues shouldn't exist. They have over 100 years of manufacturing experience to draw on. 5 years or 50 years. Bumpers shouldn't fall off, and Tesla sure as fuck shouldn't be blaming the drivers for issues. Especially when it comes to say... FSD.

#

If Tesla wants to shill the "but we're actually a tech angle"

#

That honestly brings back the QC double. Apple, Samsung, Sony do not have quality control issues by and large... also of of these companies have been caught fudging benchmarks, crippling phones with updates, and have fairly limited lifetime support.

#

Looking at the early Model S? That has already been proven when owners were forced to buy upgrade hardware out of pocket to allow for future updates.

#

Tesla as an auto company falls short of automotive company standards.
Tesla as a tech company falls short on quality and has the same potential issues as a tech company.
Either way... Tesla needs to step it up. They've been around for nearly 20 years now. They aren't a start up.

#

Honestly regarding tesla as company i wonder how their solar stuff is doing

#

Im more interested in their solar stuff than their cars

dense shard
#

Their solar stuff is great for dragging prices down.

#

It's less great for some of the behind the scenes stuff.

#

Personally not a fan of the always on internet thing.... ugh not like everything else isn't IoT already.

#

So I don't think I can rag on them for that. Otherwise they've had some installation oops and other Tesla™️ grade bullshit.

night current
#

What do you mean by build quality exactly? I mean, the only thing that I notice that's bad about Tesla's build quality that I don't typically see in other brands is the extreme panel gap, misaligned trim, and occasional paint defects. The actual quality of the screens, trim (besides alignment), seats, etc. seem fine.
Sure, you have the occasional faulty battery and other stuff, but major failures can happen to other car manufactures, not only Tesla. I remember my mother buying a new Hyundai and the automatic transmission broke within the first week.
Now Tesla blaming people for issues is fair in certain aspects. Plenty of people out there don't keep their hands on the wheel when using autopilot, and a lot of people have tried to sue Tesla for being stupid because they hit the "gas" pedal instead of the brake and crashed into a wall. Now when it's actually the cars fault, then it's Tesla's fault, but that seems quite rare actually. At least they aren't like Ford with the Pinto where if you get rear ended it explodes. Lol

Tesla solar is cool though. I don't do too much research in that department though so I cannot say much there.

indigo coral
#

They've installed what, 2 solar arrays?

#

It's mostly marketing

dense shard
#

Let me address these points in order... tho the Savage Geese review does actually hit up on the points very well.

#

Telsa's own building of the cars has quite a few faults such as missing screws, tabs, and the such. It happens in other automakers, but Toyota produces magnitudes more. But panel gaps and misaligned trim is something legacy automakers have figured out in their base offerings in the 80s. I shouldn't have to expect any build quality issues in a car that starts at 40k. This isn't an issue at that price point anywhere else.

#

The screens have actually have been an issue in the Model S and X. Both have leaky screens it seems that eventually require replacing. This is ignoring the memory issues that require a few grand to fix. This isn't a if issue, but when. And because Teslas put so much functionality into the screens, this becomes a safety issue in many cases.

#

Seats and what have you do seem fine, and the style is subjective. Some people like minimalism, some hate it.

#

The Tesla blaming people for issues goes beyond autopilot, tho Tesla's own marketing team hasn't been great. If people hear autopilot, they'll expect autopilot. Tesla's very own branding is misleading. Don't blame the user for your own promises. Don't blame the user for their faults either. Especially without an investigation, and sure as fuck don't blame the dead. it's a bad look.

#

They are pulling a Ford/Pinto right now with the dying media units and refusing to recall cars due to rust. Mind you Ford didn't really blame users on that. They accepted fault, and let the bean counters dictate not fixing it as being cheaper. The PR fallout remains with Ford to this very day. I wonder if the person who cleared the non-fix feels like they made a mistake.

#

Tesla tried to blame Chinese drivers for being abusive to their cars. Once again... a no no. Don't blame a local market for your inability to build a car. Especially when other makers haven't experienced this issue.

#

Same goes for Canada. Drivers were experiencing catastrophic paint failure on the lower panels after just a few months of winter driving. That's NOT normal, and you should do more than offer a couple of mudflaps. That's insulting.

#

The china thing btw? Is actively being investigated by the NHTSA right now. (And I have other salt to sow on other automakers, but that actually goes very solidly into politics, so I'm not gonna touch that here. lol)

stoic ledge
#

I also abuse my car in a way that the roof seperates itself form the the body

night current
#

Tesla states everywhere that autopilot is an assistant, and when using autopilot, you are to keep your hands on the wheel and to be attentive to your surroundings. That's why I think it's the user's fault when someone gets into a crash, unless the actual autopilot itself or the car caused the problem. Their marketing team definitely isn't great though. But their failing MCU and Rust problem is no where near as bad as causing a car to explode when in a rear-end collision. Funnier part is, is that Ford decided to just pay for the hospital bills rather than the recall to fix the problem at first. Also, coming from someone who lived in China for over four years, I partially agree with Tesla in that aspect, they are fucking wild there. Lol

dense shard
#

Here's the thing.

#

The Pinto was 50 years ago.

night current
#

True, it is such an old case.

dense shard
#

Tesla's issues are now. And once again. Blaming the user is literally customer service 101 no no.

night current
#

But manufactures, if not restricted by government regulations, would probably still do that type of thing.

dense shard
#

Automakers don't anymore. Since the Toyota fiasco in the late 00s, all automakers have been very proactive in doing recalls.

#

The Takata thing is ongoing even today.

#

The autopilot thing is debatable either way, but using untrained drivers to beta test a system is just... wtf

And according to Elon, that's what the brand is supposed to mean. Elon even said that he wants EV competition because it means that it brings further progress to the switch of a world that uses renewable energy. Though, that could just be a scheme to make Tesla seem like a good company. :/

i had to get a 1.3 so insurance company would like me

ember dove
#

Good olll europe

charred depot
#

problem with mine is when the half a turn goes it slips out of its seat and knocks into everything

ember dove
#

I don't think 2.3 is even an option unless it's an mps there

charred depot
#

you can see it hitting against the shock mount in that

#

just mps yeah

ember dove
#

Ow

charred depot
#

19 year old struts lets go

#

atleast i think its that old

ember dove
#

I'm pretty sure my mr2s have original struts

charred depot
#

can see a bit of a oil leak from the corrosion defense system

ember dove
#

Oh of course

charred depot
#

bit late on the deployment cause the subframes going extra crusty

ember dove
#

Oil IS corrosion prevention

frank steeple
#

lol

charred depot
#

that springs broken twice now so it has a lean

ember dove
#

Thank god I have florida car lmao

charred depot
#

dreading doing it because the bolts are most certainly one with the strut

#

if you sharp turn to the right then left all manner of horrible noises happen

ember dove
#

I bought my 3 with 4 blown shocks, unbalanced wheels, mismatched tires, all blown bushings, no ball joints, and bad axles

charred depot
#

we dont have much shit that fucked thanks to our MOT

ember dove
#

And no wipers or headlights

#

And then I drove it across florida at 110mph

charred depot
#

had more issues but ofcourse we only fix what it needs to pass

ember dove
#

I do not look forward to inspections and I will not do them for as long as possible

charred depot
#

they are yearly here and if you dont do them you cant drive

#

fail, cant drive

ember dove
#

I'm moving to ny

#

And I'm keeping florida plates lmao fuck that

charred depot
#

we had one fail because the washer didnt spray a adequate amount of fluid

ember dove
#

Wtf lmao

charred depot
#

who tf sittin there with a measuring jug

ember dove
#

I put the soapy water from a car wash in mine

#

And now it fires over the windshield and past both my mirrors

charred depot
#

tanks too small on mine for how dirty the roads are

#

rear wiper washer is positioned in such a way that 90% of the fluid misses the wiper

ember dove
#

My rear one kinda dribbles out more than sprays

#

And then it leaks afterwards

charred depot
#

MOT's are good though cause if someones selling a car you can just put the plate it and get a decent idea of how its kept

ember dove
#

Ny has inspections but their not that intense

charred depot
#

can look at anyones here by just typing in the plate

ember dove
#

I wanna drive my shitbox in peace don't look at it

#

I'm gonna get my mr2 inspected for the lols

charred depot
#

the big killer here is arch / sill rust

ember dove
#

Basically doesn't happen in florida

charred depot
#

once a car gets to 20 years old here its pretty much 100% pancake time

#

off to be turned into tin cans

ember dove
#

Sad

charred depot
#

theres people who have classics that dont fully restore them, just means they have to do welding every year

#

classic shitboxes like old ladas, peugoet 305s etc

ember dove
#

My mr2 has minimal rust

#

0 on the bottom

charred depot
#

my 10 year old mazda 2 has a big spot in the middle

#

i dont think the lackluster undercoating was meant for gravel roads

ember dove
#

0 anywhere on my 3

#

There's exposed sheet steel from paint flakes and a scrape and it's not rusty

charred depot
#

we dump salt on our roads

#

for no reason half the time

ember dove
#

Ew

#

I'm gonna ruin it when I move though officially a winter car

charred depot
#

theres bits underneath where theres no undercoating it seems

#

at the end of the day it is a disposable car so

ember dove
#

Yeah mine was dirt cheap

#

Iove it but I want an explorer and a speed 3

charred depot
#

wish they made a speed 2 when they had that ford money

ember dove
#

I have never heard of that lmao I wanna see

charred depot
#

doesent exist really

ember dove
#

Oh I read wrong

#

Turbo yours

#

Straight racecar

charred depot
#

id have to fabricate everything really

#

nothing really exists engine performance wise for the mazda 2

ember dove
#

I'm not getting ny registration until I have a better understanding of what passes and doesn't for NYS

charred depot
#

also in the UK you have to declare everything to insurance and it costs alot

ember dove
#

cause I definitely wanna swap my mr2

normal temple
charred depot
#

Im looking to get a E36 318i to somewhat restore

#

Id love to go for a E39 but insurance is not ver nice.

normal temple
#

Fun times

ember dove
#

I don't ever really see myself in something german

charred depot
#

i have a friend who has a 318i but actually 328i of eh debateable condition

ember dove
#

Mmhatch

#

Nice

charred depot
stoic ledge
#

Ah with the factory hood intake I see

ember dove
#

ERM sir does that pass inspection

#

Ave you got a loicense for that track weapon m8

fathom socket
#

its just built different

charred depot
#

funny, the hood is like that because the latch wasnt properly hooked up

warm sparrow
#

charred depot

charred depot
#

"easy fix"

#

i know what ive got

ember dove
#

Wiper fluid is a major defect but a cracked windshield isn't???

vagrant dune
#

If its a chip its not necessary to fix but if there is a leak or not enough wiper fluid it can be dangerous

#

Imagine being on a highway and a truck splashes mud on your windshield and you have nothing to clean it with

#

@ember dove

ember dove
#

Your wipers lmao

vagrant dune
#

Try wiping mud off with just wipers

#

It will just smudge it everywhere

ember dove
#

You've never been offroading

vagrant dune
#

Yes, yes I have

#

And I can quarantee that its in tougher places than you because I drive a 6x6 sisu sa-240 in the finnish army and it barely gets to some places I need to go to

ember dove
#

Maybe my wipers are extra good idk but i still hate inspections

vagrant dune
#

And it is MUCH more capable than any off road car on the market

charred depot
#

yeah i need my washers alot here

stoic ledge
#

Does it ever not rain in the UK?

charred depot
#

yeah just random short showers happen alot so our roads always look damp

#

atleast up here in Scortland

vagrant dune
#

I love washing the truck after driving in like 70cm of muddy goodness...

#

Not many trucks that wont get stuck there

charred depot
#

my dad offroads a 2009 hyundai i30

vagrant dune
#

Wut

charred depot
#

goes through copious amounts of balljoints and bushings

vagrant dune
charred depot
vagrant dune
#

Yes

charred depot
#

everyone he works with has suv's

vagrant dune
#

There are 0 SUVs that would survive my use

#

I'm 100% certain of that

charred depot
#

i take alot of gravel roads on my mazda 2 but im too scared to even dip a wheel into the grass, i see it as quicksand.

#

just reverse to the passing place rather than playing a dangerous game

vagrant dune
#

This thing is actually insane, like insanely deep uphill with mud in it and this thing just keeps going

fathom socket
#

So

#

I've localized my suspension knocking

#

Worn out bushings

ember dove
#

Sounds abt right
