Im teasing starting a project of basically building myself a head unit so that i can get modern features but keep the classic text array and physical buttons of my 2011 car

My biggest problem is i don't know if its at all possible to control those diy, they could have signed data or just be too complicated but im thinking it will be fine.

Other complication is could use an analog channel switch to pipe into a consumer dsp but i also found a dsp dev board that can do like i2s and stuff which would let me use a bt 5.1 module for good audio, combined with the display control i coould show what's playing and whatnot

I can definitly tear apart and try hooking up can bus modules to individual components to try to read whats going on with them. I'm hoping the button cluster just spits out very simple "1" "2" "3" packets out and it doesn't need any input. Hopefully the display module just has ascii sent into it or at least can be replay attacked from reading my live system and it just works... I guess I just try checking and see what happens?

The good thing is that component can be done separately from adding new sound parts to my car bcs i can always just run an aux into the amps or whatever

Dont really think itll be that easy but with some CAN modules and software to control them you can listen to the bus and even try brute forcing messages

Just be careful, i wouldnt be suprised if you could accidentally trigger an anti theft alarm and/or deployment of airbags

Only mess with the bus if you know what youre doing and know what signal line pair connects to what aswell as the modules functions

I would fully isolate those 2 components on a mini bus before sending my own messages. If the modules require data from a legit head unit that i cant emulate or from the car itself then I'm abandoning the project right away for sure

im tempted, not only does it look sick, but a few 3d printed parts and some cutouts in the fender liners later it will actually be functional vents that will likely reduce the drag quite a bit as that area is a pretty draggy spot due to tire wake spilling out of the fenders

Sunk cost fallacy on one of the most reliable motors GM ever built, the Vortec 4200, with an ever growing modding community people love to put turbos on these things cuz apparently the stock block can just handle boost, makes 275hp from the factory depending on how crazy you want to go like some drag racers you can get it up to a 1000+ with some reinforced parts. Me I'd probably stick it somewhere in the entry level It doesn't need to be crazy, just fun enough to spook people. I dislike the direction that modern GM has been trending today, engines with water for oil and engine failures like no tomorrow, ever since the government bailout of '08 they've been going downhill ever since.

275 is an embarrassing amount for a stock 4.2 litre released in 2002

You got to remember that this is naturally aspirated and it was beating the competition at the time (cough cough Ford exploder) also it's a heavy ass SUV so yes it's naturally slow, but slap a turbo on there and you start getting some fun, it's also an inline 6. Hence the low horsepower but it makes most of it at like 1,400 RPM, so you really don't need to rev it that high to get the torque out of it.

@dusk ocean so I did my rear brakes. Turns out, you can just pop the parking brake motor off, stick a socket on the backside of the piston that normally engages with the motor and twist it to "reset" it.

Then I was able to just push the piston back in like normal.
