The 455 is a pretty sweet engine. My FIL is building a '76 Trans Am and just finished building a 455 for it not long ago. Has it on his test stand and it sounds pretty sweet. Should be good power... ballpark around 400hp and 500lb ft of torque

#

If your talking about the 350 Pontiac, it's totally different than the Chevy 350. The Pontiac 350, 400, and 455 all shared the same block. They mainly differed in the heads, bore and stroke

Naw emissions on old cars is easy if you fail it probably wanted repaired, they often don't even do the emissions part of the test on classics.

Realistically you only need a functioning cat on 2001 onwards and even then.

torn swan

it’s not under warranty anymore

#

i have like 400k km

and the car is 5yo

so i’ll just send the car to destruction centre when i get my new car

5 years is still within the warranty limit, the mileage probably isn't. tbh

torn swan

civic spoke
#

Tbh. That car has lived its life. 400,000 km's out of any car is a lot.

#

And can't even knock it for being an EV. When your average ICE motor 100% wouldn't have lasted that long.

And price to replace the engine vs motor is roughly the same.

#

in Morocco etc there is a shit ton of old benz with over 600k still running fine

but a decent diesel would have

#

such a pain in the ass when you use the car on very long trips in area that aren’t covered with a decent charge network like in southern spain

#

and for me it’s very often

#

i go to southern spain at least once a month

#

in france the network is great, i don’t say its bad

#

but in spain its awful

civic spoke
torn swan
#

well where i go in spain there is only 1 charging point

#

for a 50km radius

#

and when i go to morocco it’s even worse

#

but it’s not that often so i don’t mind about morocco

civic spoke
#

That's fine? At least if you have an EV with 300 km range.

#

it’s just not a solution unless i get a 200m cable thru the street

brittle totem
torn swan
#

diesel is cheaper for me to drive

#

that’s why i ain’t getting an ev again

#

not even because of my bad experience with the tesla

#
  • diesel is like 1,4€ where i go
#

and under 1.1 in spain

#

so basically cheaper than ev

civic spoke
#

Especially if you drive an EV with a faulty motor...

#

New model 3 has an estimated range of 500/700 km.

#

Depending if you go with standard vs long range models.

#

That's a lot of range.

#

I for one wouldn't complain about not having a charger within 50 km's.

#

But as always. That also requires you to have access to any type of charging.

digital oracle

#

Photos from the last autoX event I took the R8 to a couple weeks ago

glad mantle
#

If you're going to get a radar detector at all get a Uniden R8 or Redline 360c and call it a day

#

But I've found that WAZE has been a more useful tool to me than radar detectors

lone fern
#

i’ve been running only waze but michigan state police bought a ton of black durangos and they like to sit on the on ramps running radar so you can’t see them till its too late, but people don’t report them since they’re mostly unmarked and not visible from the highway

#

i’ve already found this out the hard way 😭

#

just can’t take too many more points on the ole license and an empty straight flat highway as my daily commute is too tempting to not speed on lmao

glad mantle
#

Up here where I live my hack is that in certain areas I never speed and I always stay below 40km/h over the speed limit (you don't get any license points unless you're going at least that fast)

#

The worst that can happen at the speeds I drive at is getting a ticket for going over the limit and paying a flat $185 CAD fee

#

but I haven't gotten a ticket in years

lone fern
glad mantle
#

But speed limits here are unreasonably low in some places so everyone drives a bit over the limit

#

that's why I'm happy that the severe punishments here only happen when you're going 40km/h over tops

#

most of the time 40 over the limit is faster than I'd naturally drive on most streets anyway

#

usually im going 10 to 20 over

#

not 30 to 40

#

and cops don't usually care for that much over

lone fern
#

i have an hour and a half commute on an empty highway that has a speed limit of 75 but i set my cruise at like 95-100

glad mantle
#

I like Idaho for that

#

Idaho has a lot of roads that are 85mph limits

#

so when I road trip from BC to TX I get to go through those roads sometimes

#

There's a stretch of highway that is entirely desolate most of the time and completely flat and last time I was there I went up to 170mph just for fun. There wasn't another car in sight the whole run (which only took like 13 seconds anyway)

lone fern
#

most of my tickets are on backroads and are from county cops or the one cop from the town i live in who are muchhh less lenient versus the state police on the highway which is a bummer

glad mantle
#

I used it for a dragy quarter mile test on the street

lone fern
#

yeah i found the top speed of my regal on my commute lol

glad mantle
#

lone fern
#

glad mantle
#

the only car of mine I think I'd actually be comfortable hitting the top speed of is my supra

lone fern
#

i was impressed the damn car just sorta floated just like it does at any other speed

#

definitely didn’t feel like 140

glad mantle
#

the supra is limited to 163mph

lone fern
#

not too shabby

glad mantle
#

limiter removed it can do 183mph on stock tires

#

Some people have gotten them to 192mph with a different tire setup

#

but that's really pushing it

lone fern
#

luckily the trifecta tune i ordered will remove my limiter so i can do 160 if i so please but i think i need new tires if I wanna do that

glad mantle
#

yeah you would definitely not want to rock the tires you have rn at those speeds unless they're already high performance tires

#

My Model S Plaid only has like 4 currently sold tires that I can safely use on it at all

#

For that reason

#

High load rating + high speed rating + need high grip and strength to handle 1100 whp

lone fern
#

yeah they’re not 😭 shouldn’t really even be doin over like 110 on em cuz they’re random china tires that came w the car when I bought it (shopping for a new set asappp lmao)

glad mantle
#

my R8 is on china tires rn lmao

#

They are not too terrible until you get close to the limits

#

I'm gonna be getting some pilot cup 2s

#

I think that for certain vehicles it really doesn't make sense to be running off-brand tires lmao

lone fern
glad mantle
#

they're just what it came with when i bought it

lone fern
#

like obviously they can’t afford the car

glad mantle
#

yeah like a lot of people really underestimate the cost of owning these cars

#

not just buying them

#

Affording lease payments is not the same as affording owning the car

lone fern
#

bmw’s and Mercedes owners are major offenders

misty mantle
#

Kinda butting in here, but my shitbox ford was on china tires when I got it

glad mantle

lone fern
lone fern
glad mantle
#

but I can justify it because that is way cheaper than rebuilding a motor

#

those 5.2 V10s are expensive pieces of engineering

lone fern
#

definitely 😭

if you treat them well though they will treat you well as well

#

who tf puts timing chains on the back of the motor besides satan himself 😭

#

especially when they’re basically consumables at this point 😭😭

misty mantle
lone fern
#

not quite as bad as wet belts for oil pumps deep inside the motor but nearly as bad

lone fern
glad mantle
#

However, they are extemely reliable and rarely fail

#

Timing chains are not a maintenance item on the V10 generally

#

even on cars with over 200,000 miles

misty mantle
#

Wtf happened to crank-driven oil pumps 😭

lone fern
#

meanwhile my timing chain

glad mantle
#

Like

#

To my knowledge, most of the time a motor will spin before the timing chains fail

#

with the V10

misty mantle
glad mantle
#

They're extremely overbuilt, there's a reason that people compare the V10 to the 2JZ but on crazy steroids

#

And how people are getting 2,000 - 3,000 horsepower out of them on stock internals

lone fern
glad mantle
#

The rev limiter was re-tuned incorrectly on my current tune (one of the things getting fixed) and I accidentally pushed the car up to 9200rpm

#

lone fern

glad mantle
