Our systems pretty fucked as we have 3 seperate ones pre 2001, 2001-2017 and 2017 onwards but generally its not too expensive

#

latest system normalises a annual rate of like £180/y between all cars I am sure

#

Hilariously because of that electric vehicles will pay more tax than a 2000's old tdi which will be like £30/y

charred depot
#

All of my cars that still require tax to be payed are like £330/y

#

as pre 2001 over 1.5L: £330 and under is like £250 cant remember rarely had it

#

only 2 bands pre 2001

#

Not long till all of my stuff is exempt from inspections and tax though

white heart
#

Thank god my parents will help me out for the first car and most of it's running costs

charred depot
#

Yeah its a little annoying considering their age and how 10-15 year old tdi mega mile crunchers get cheaper tax but eh

#

the 2017 tax change was probably just a money grab by the government at the time making everyone pay a significant lump sum at purchase

#

Whats more annoying is that I pay for insurance on 4 of the same car and dont get a discount 😭

dull cedar
#

The only Volvo owner I knew had it in the shop far too frequently and the bills were far too high

dull cedar
#

Again, skill issue

white heart
#

This is like watching my parents arguing over custody all over again /s

charred depot
#

its not a skill issue, like old audi's being tragically understeery its just their nature.

white heart
#

Me think imma disappoint the two of you by getting the worst possible car I could get for a first car

charred depot
#

old french cars always trump handling wise in this way

dull cedar
#

My E100 Corolla was fun as fuck to drive, just floor it everywhere

My Corolla Fielder Z is a different kind of fun... I can't floor it until like 3rd because it just wheelspins

charred depot
#

I have driven a E100 they dont rotate

white heart
dull cedar
#

Rotate?

charred depot
#

I like a car to oversteer when I lift off

dull cedar
#

...

#

Lift off oversteer is not a good thing

charred depot
#

It is if you can use it

#

It's what makes old french cars so enjoyable to drive

dull cedar
#

Also they very much can have liftoff oversteer if you're not driving a pov spec one with no arbs

charred depot
#

And why they do so well on track

#

basically every car will have it if you force it but its very usable in a 205

forest lintel
#

205s are cool cars indeed

charred depot
#

even standard 205's with some nice tyres dominate on tracks because of this

#

You can mess with the suspension on toyotas and trade all comfort for fun handling but I have always found Peugeot has a good balance standard.

halcyon grotto
#

Reliable but not super cheap to fix if it goes wrong

charred depot
#

I was going to buy a V50 before they brought in the low emission zones : (

halcyon grotto
#

Do like those, the ones I see have seemed to last better than similar age v70

charred depot
#

All the estate cars peugeot / citroen makes with the hdi I dont quite like and that was a good option but no

halcyon grotto
#

Probably because parts are cheaper

#

I was considering a diesel but with the LEZs I don't doubt they'll expand them at some point soon-ish

charred depot
#

Friend had one with the 2.0hdi as well it was bulletproof but he had to get rid for the LEZ and now has a Peugeot 405 (not my idea I promise)

halcyon grotto
#

Wouldn't your cars all be exempt due to historical whatnots

charred depot
#

Yeah they are which is why I cant have a new car

#

Have to have a old car basically

halcyon grotto
#

It's probably for the best

charred depot
#

Yeah I was pretty unhappy at the time, almost went downhill.

halcyon grotto
#

What do you think about the pay per mile gubbins given you have multiple vehicles

#

Seems a bit better? Depends a lot on execution

charred depot
#

Dunno they would have to make a proper camera network around the country to enforce it as my odometers could easily stop moving

#

Not that they arent already somewhat doing that

#

Insurance is my biggest issue generally but thats not going to change, unfortunetely due to young people abusing trade policies in the past it is very hard to get one unless you are old.

halcyon grotto
#

Hmm

#

I suppose none of these things are "designed" to make owning multiple vehicles cheaper

#

Literally free money on their part

charred depot
#

Yeah its only going to get worse but im enjoying stuff while I can, I only really enjoy driving on track these days anyway.

I wouldnt mind a 740/940 but the diesel engines they came with are shit

#

charred depot
#

Maybe I could live with 25mpg but that might be a overestimate for a petrol brick

#

Ive always preferred diesels as regardless of age they tend do get good MPG and you can often easily increase power but it is nice to rev out a petrol now and then.

forest lintel
#

Indeed, though the red blocks aren't the most rev happy engines

#

glad i live in a place where front plates arent required

glad mantle
#

a lot of people just ignore it though

#

all 4 of my cars have no plates on the front

#

I just pay the fee if I get ticketed

lone fern
#

fuck front plates

#

especially for cars that don’t have good places to mount

glad mantle
#

I mean it's a stupid regulation, the reason it exists is for cameras to be able to identify both front and rear plates

lone fern
#

i aint drilling through a good bumper

glad mantle
#

but all of those camera systems are typically only facing the direction of the side of the street they're on

lone fern
#

yeahh they’re big dumb

glad mantle
#

Cops stopped caring here a couple years ago about it

#

I don't know anybody that's been ticketed for no front plate in the last two years

#

I got three tickets for it between 2021 and 2022 and not a single one since

#

(And I've been pulled over three times since then)

#

I got a tint ticket but no plate ticket the last time I got one

#

the cop literally said to me "I think that rule is pretty silly" and just didn't write me a ticket for the plate LOL

#

but he did for the tint

glad mantle
#

Most of the cops here are pretty chill actually

#

A lot of them are also car guys and whatnot, car culture in BC is massive

#

Vancouver and Surrey PDs are where the assholes are

#

but RCMP is generally pretty good

lone fern
#

no tint laws besides windshield tint here (which I just got so ima be pulled over a lot more but whatever) but the cops where i live (rural small town in northern michigan) pull my ass over for anything :((

glad mantle
#

Tbf I do understand why tint laws exist for front side windows and windshield

#

it's not as stupid as plates

lone fern
#

got a ticket for 32 in a 25 right in front of the sign where it changes from 35 to 25

glad mantle
#

but I personalyl still think they are too harsh

lone fern
#

i’d find tint laws more reasonable if cops also didn’t have “illegal” tint

glad mantle
#

Exactly lol

#

Also I think that wanting to conceal your identity when in a car is actually a legit reason to get tint for certain people (e.g. famous people/politicians)

#

If a cop pulls you over they will see who it is

lone fern
#

yeah i mean imo everyone should have the right to privacy in their own car bc it’s not public property, the cops will figure out who tf i am when i roll the window down

glad mantle
#

One of the reasons I've been given is because "it can be more difficult to break windows in the event you need to be extracted from the vehicle" which is technically true but only situationally valid, but an argument can be made that window tint can be safer in certain contexts all around (e.g. not having bright LEDs from behind you fuck up your vision at night)

lone fern
#

i do get it in terms of not knowing if they have a weapon behind said tint tho

glad mantle
#

I have bad astigmatism in one eye and I have tint on my front windows specifically so I can see at night

#

It's on my front side windows but not my windshield

lone fern
glad mantle
#

Without tint I get bad halos if a car is following me and it gives me migraines

lone fern
#

samee

#

that’s why i went 5%

glad mantle
#

I just did 50% and it was enough for me

#

the rears are 20%

#

but I also did that so the tint would match my roof tint

lone fern
#

i have 50% on the windshield and 5% the rest of the car

glad mantle
#

I think thats reasonable

#

I like 5% but personal preference for me is it's too dark

#

in the sense that it makes my interior really dark

lone fern
#

honestly with quality film visibility isn’t too bad but yeah it does make it dark

glad mantle
#

I've thought about getting my R8's windows tinted but tbh I probably wont

lone fern
#

it’s how i like it tho

glad mantle
#

i don't drive it at night almost ever

#

so its not really a big deal

#

and I usually have the roof down so the tint would be kind of pointless lmao

lone fern
#

lmaoo yeah

glad mantle
#

like imagine being in the convertible with dark as hell windows

#

seems kinda silly to me

lone fern
#

i drive a lot at night and early morning

lone fern
glad mantle
#

because nobody tints the convertible's windows LMAO

#

I found two cars with them tinted but the photos were all with the roofs up 😭

lone fern
#

why 😭

glad mantle
#

comically bad

lone fern
#

its awful oh god

#

honestly i feel bad for the guy he probably didn’t think about it till he put the top down

glad mantle
#

a mild tint is okay

#

this is 60%

#

but 20% or higher looks so very wrong

lone fern
#

yeah that’s reasonable and honestly some factory tints are about as dark

gentle thicket
#

I mean if the top is down why are the windows up

glad mantle
#

but want the openness of the lack of a roof

lone fern
#

i dunno, my grandma drives her convertable chrysler sebring with the windows up (btw what a shitty terrible car 😭 but she thinks it’s hot shit so i hold my tongue)

glad mantle
#

I usually keep the windows up when the roof is down

#

unless I'm cruising for a long time and want to rest my hand on the door

#

the windows make a massive difference to wind noise and such as well

#

you'd think it's negligible but it really isn't

lone fern
#

yeah definitely esp on the highway

glad mantle
#

it's VERY noticeable

#

It makes about as much difference as roof down vs up does, relatively speaking

#

if my roof is up though my windows are usually down

#

earlier when I was coming home I had roof and windows up though so that I could feel the AC lol

lone fern
#

nothing beats windows down and ac blasting

stoic ledge

Just what makes their brochure look more attractive KEKW

civic spoke
#

They probably like round numbers for the minutes. IDK.

stoic ledge
#

Yeah everything over 30m looks bad

#

So they put 15-80 or 20-80 in 30 minutes to hide the shitty charging

#

Ohno the anxiety

civic spoke
edgy bough
#

I drove from Kristiansand to Oslo and back in my mx30 and that is 650km I spent 3.5 hours charging on that trip.

stoic ledge
#

The horror

#

Also: driving 215 wherever possible vs keeping it 130 makes a huge difference, who knew KEKW

civic spoke
#

The efficiency of the i3 is pretty great, tho.

#

I can probably squeeze out 300 km out of my car if I really needed to. But 250 km is a lot more realistic. And what I tell most people.

stoic ledge
#

100 is a doable cruising speed tho, 80 not as much sadlinus

civic spoke
#

Just set your ACC behind a truck. wheeze

stoic ledge
#

I'd need to check the data of the car but iirc it shows the same consumption profile for 110 and 130 KEKW

#

So the most efficient speed & charging is at like 130

#

(for that car)

#

As in like distance travelled vs charging time

torn swan
#

and it’s not even cheaper than diesel

civic spoke
#

The faster you can charge. The better it is at high speed driving.

stoic ledge
civic spoke
#

Having a BMW 330e would also be nice.

#

Reminds me of a recent Carwow video where they compared the three different 5 series versions...
BEV, PHEV, and ICE.

#

With Mat's conclusion being that PHEV are useless.
Because ICE/BEV are much better at doing what they are supposed to do. And the PHEV is bad EV without the same ICE range.

stoic ledge
#

That video made very little sense tbh

civic spoke
#

Everyone went after him that PHEV's use case isn't what they tested.

#

PHEV is great if you need to drive like 50 km a day to/from work. With an occasional longer drive.

#

Caught my sister car the other day. BMW i8.

edgy bough
#

This is some of the coverage from one specific provider.

#

Roughly same are, different provider

edgy bough
torn swan
#

kwh price is like 0.90€ here on public chargers

#

so almost same than 1 litre of diesel

edgy bough
#

Here the public chargers is around 0.5€.
And fuel is around 1.85€ per liter.

gentle thicket
edgy bough
#

But then again most people charge at home where the price is 0.15€ per kW or at work.

gentle thicket
#

I mean it would be so much more environmentally friendly to build small lightweight (think 90's Civic) 100 mile range cars for the 15 minute commute to work or the store and home for people to daily drive.

edgy bough
#

It wold be so much more environmentally friendly if the us stopped producing their gas guzzling minster trucks.

#

Lovely notification, ready for me when I leave work in 2 hours.

gentle thicket
#

But they are needed in some cases.

paper sandal
#

I've been thinking about switching to electric

#

But i would never get the money back probably.

edgy bough
#

Money back?

edgy bough
gentle thicket
#

I never said it's 100% needed.

edgy bough
#

And they are also stupidly oversized.

#

We have 2 EVs in our household and we are happy so far, and if we are going on a longer roadtrip we wil rent a car. But with our network we dont really need an ICE.

gentle thicket
#

I guess if you live in an area not likely to experience a natural disaster then renting is a fine option. I live somewhere that it can practically be expected yearly and if you end up in an evacuation zone without an ice car - enjoy riding the storm out in a stadium.

lone fern
#

my only local gas station has two pumps and it’s already not fun trying to get gas so I cannot imagine we get electric fast charging any time soon lmao

stoic ledge
#

That's why you should charge mainly at home/destination/...

#

If there's a natural disaster and you've had your car plugged in, it can do 300 miles

No need to worry then 😛

gentle thicket
#

Tell that to anyone foolish enough to live in Miami.

SUVs are a lot more dumb than trucks

edgy bough
#

At least with the SUV you can see the child you ran over before it happens.

gentle thicket
#

What makes you think that? The real ones are built on the same exact platforms.

#

Sadly, most of the real ones are dead.

gentle thicket
#

And the SUV is no smaller than that.

#

It's often so similar that you can swap the fenders, hood, headlights, grille and bumper for a new look.

#

google truck escalade conversion for example and you'll see all sorts of trucks with escalade front ends.
Here's a dually 3500 converted. Though that may require cutting and blending panels since the escalade is based on the 1500 not 3500.

dull cedar
#

If the trucks were decent, and used for their purpose, everyone with them would have them for 20-30 years

gentle thicket
#

Honestly - I want to see mini trucks come back (compact pickups) like the first generation Toyota Tacoma. They're great. But stupid efficiency standards made them impossible. The reason we have big trucks is because the Government literally said to make them bigger instead of making reasonable efficiency standards.

#

They're making cars in the shape of trucks and that's almost a start, but very much not what I had in mind.

charred depot
civic spoke
#

And 40-60 miles is sadly not enough for most. Even as a commuter.

#

And then you also have the problem with having to have a charger at home. Etc.

#

My first question when people ask me to recommend an EV is if they can charge it at home/work.

charred depot
#

I just find it frustrating when people do the auto only test then expect to be able to get a car at £1-2k easily.

civic spoke

Cheap-cheap cars are still mostly manuals.

But you also shouldn't have many expectations at that kind of a budget.

I mean you really can get a decent car for £2k, in my opinion. but if it has to be automatic double it.

It’s a 2011 ford f150 and I’m looking to put the amp on the passenger side where it has more space to breathe

#

I seen a YouTube video, some guy just got a ground and power wire of equal length and grounded the amp to the battery lol. Even if I did wanna do that they only gave me a short ground wire anyways

#

I’m gunna see if I can use one of the seat bolts after sanding the paint away, unless anyone has an alternative

True ye. I might go for now without one and see how it performs, but I think either way I’ll be getting one soon just to make sure the rest of the truck stays properly powered

#

Now I have to figure out grounding. It seems to just barely fit around the bolt that holds the seat to the chassis, but it keeps wanting to cross thread. Might also have to see though if I can get the paint off the bolt

Probably good up to 500W without. >500W probably pick up a 1 Farad. >1500W start considering a 2 Farad.

I’m also wondering now if instead of trying to get the ground onto the seat bolt, do I go for the metal brackets that hold the rails on that let the seat go back and forth

You're welcome
Oh and vacuum leaks
Those smog cars were a nest of vacuum lines leading to all kinds of bullshit
Air pump, charcoal canister, etc

#

But plug the ports and yank it all out and you're good

delete the smog pump if it has one

#

i assume it does being mid 70’s lol

Depends on how bad the emissions are without one cause i know the UK are strict about that kinda shit, honestly might see if i can delete it but keep it there so i can just put the pipes back in for the MOT test.

#

then yank it after its passed

Modern set of cats should mean you don't have to use a lot of the bs
Depends on the british laws on old cars too

Old cars are basically treat the same as new ones but i believe some are either MOT Exempt (meaning no car/emissions tests... yipee!!) Or tax free, or both i cant remember

#

think its cars over 30 years old

#

or 40

#

but considering this is 50

#

should be all good in that regard

Yep
Over 40 are mot exempt unless theres been a "significant modification"

marble stone
#

so unless its rotted and somebody has managed to replace the chassis somehow

#

im all good

proven tundra
#

Yep
The biggest thing there would be if its had an engine swap
What engine is in it?
Pretty common here to v8 swap if it had a 6 stock

I find it rather SUS that replacing the chassis is considered a substantial change but if I replace every thing that bolts to the chassis with the same part but from a different of the same vehicle, that would be fine as there is no 'substantial change' since the vehicle works the same.

Can't remember if it's a 260 or a 350 V8

There were some options

Oh man if it had a 455 that would be badass

Well not for my wallet would probably get like 2 MPG

Usually around 10-15
Us at least

#

My personal want would be a 400
The aftermarket on those is great due to it existing a good long time pre smog so there was and is a lot of interest
Good set of heads and a cam wakes them up fairly inexpensively

#

350 would be decent too

#

cheap parts easy to modify

#

love me an old small block chev

I've been enjoying my new ford PES3_Smile

Which is just kind of ok
Pontiac didn't have a small / big block, they just had a sort of large-medium design
The 350 poncho was a small bore kind of long stroke design that did its job but wasn't a powerhouse much
Reliability wise it's fine
