Speaking of that. Back in like 2018 I bought a used Xbox One from GameStop to play with some friends. It was refurbished by GameStop, was just supposed to be a regular 1TB Xbox One, wasn't told anything was special about it nor was it supposed to be. Well, I get it home and start it up and nearly shit my pants when it makes the most fucked up startup noise I have ever heard. This is my first Xbox One, but I had heard what it is supposed to sound like from my next door neighbor. This.... Was not that. I immediately turned it off and it also made a fucked up noise. I end up turning it on and off a couple times and I realized it sounds like a fucking car engine. I look it up, and sure as shit, there was a limited edition Forza Xbox One that made engine noises on start up and shutdown. For some reason somebody replaced put the interals of a Forza Xbox and put it in a regular Xbox One shell. I get they likely wanted to keep the shell for cosmetic reasons, but why replace the interals? I have no idea. This is what is sounded like, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxO3nIwIKH0

pure pond

once im ready for the oldtimer frame swap im gonna sandblast it and galvanize it, the best protection

if seen those like oil sprays for your frame, i dont like it its sticky then you can get dirt build up and its still gonna rust then

so im planning on changing the exhaust on my miata after my vacation next month, but now i need to make a decision on which to get, and im so tempted to go with this one that has a build in cut-out valve, but its 600eu more compared to the one that doesnt have it :upsidedowncry:
im worried that if i end up getting the normal one ill regret it after a while cuz ill end up wanting more lol

civic spoke
#

But I also enjoy flying under the radar.

snow otter
# civic spoke Less is more in my book.

i mean, this one has the same sound as the one without the valve, and both are about the same noise level as the stock exhaust during normal driving. but i take it racing so it would be nice to open the exhaust then for some more noise

merry mason
#

Needle gun wire brush drill and sanding the rust off then putting that stuff on is all u can do really innit

#

If I just do sections at a time then I can do it properly

civic spoke
#

Since you do take it racing. Then you would also have to consider track noise limits. But I'm not sure a Miata is usually something to worry about.

snow otter
#

sound levels sould be fine

#

and i can partially close it if its too high

civic spoke
#

That's the nice thing with valved systems.

snow otter
#

but like, its quite a bit of extra money. not only is the exhaust more expensive, but i also need the controller thing for it

pure pond
#

that is a lot for that control box tho

snow otter
#

Sure if you keep it closed its likely to be fine, especially since the exhaust wont make much more noise then the OE one, but if they catch you your in for a hefty fine or have to get the car physically checked (and you pay for it ofc)

lone fern

if you want the best rust protection though i’d sand blast your frame but it can also be applied over some surface rust if you needlescale it

It’s basically all surface rust I bought the car off an auction without seeing it got it and it’s fully covered in concrete but the concrete shit has sealed it really well

Yeah that doesn't surprise me at all. I would have been late too if I was on my way instead of heading home. Hey, good thing you missed it. Better than being involved in the accident, especially because someone did die and 3 others are said to be critically injured. Apparently the truck stalled out and got stuck in one of the lanes. The van ended up hitting the truck and then a semi hit the van. As far as I can tell the person who was killed and the injured people were all in the van I believe. Really unfortunate. That area really isn't a great spot to break down, too. There is little to no should to stop at near those interchanges.

quick but soulless

glad mantle
# lone fern quick but soulless

I've always been bothered by this. I think the idea that EVs are soulless comes from a misunderstanding of them.

They definitely still have soul, it's just an entirely different type of soul. They are not a direct replacement for gas cars in terms of fun but have their own set of qualifications that make them enjoyable to drive.

My biggest gripe is that Tesla is so hellbent on making their EVs quiet, but the inverter and motor noise is genuinely quite cool when there isn't any deadening and I wish more cars let the motors make cool spaceship noises. (I recorded the noise from the plaid's inverter and put it over this clip of it accelerating we got earlier today)

#

The plaid is my daily, but I also have an FD RX-7 and a GR Supra currently. All wildly different cars. I drive them all about equally (except for the RX-7) and they are all fun cars. But for spirited driving I would pick either of the gas cars anyday

#

For certain track experiences I actually prefer the predictability and instant response time that the plaid provides. it makes it a very predictable car to handle, especially at high speeds, which makes driving at the limit a different kind of exhilarating

lone fern
glad mantle
#

My RX-7's interior is even more minimal than the plaid's is, I'd argue, would you call it soulless, too?

#

Futuristic, no. But on a fundamental level I think that equating futurism with soullessness is also bizarre. Back in the day, things like pop up headlights were very futuristic. Now they are seen as retro

lone fern
#

no, the difference between those and a tesla is that everything is still tactile, even if there’s not a ton of features or buttons. everything has a purpose, it’s easy to use and isn’t a giant ipad that controls everything about the car, distracting you from driving

glad mantle
#

When you're driving, you're not focused on the screen, in the same way you're not focused on your climate buttons and radio while driving a 90s car

lone fern
#

my 98 crv had like 7 buttons in total because it is simple but it is not soulless to me because every button had a purpose, it was easy to use, and filled the dash enough to make it look like something was going on

jagged wagon
glad mantle
#

for some reason

#

that's fair I suppose xd

#

But even then, you don't need to look at the screen to adjust them in a Tesla 🤓 ☝️

jagged wagon
#

Indeed. Like, obviously the primary focus is safety / not hitting anything outside of my car, but if I can't easily adjust climate controls or the stereo without taking my eyes off the road, the vehicle has been designed wrong.

I agree wholeheartedly

jagged wagon
#

Oh christ no. Absolutely not. That's horrible if you're someone who NEEDS tactile feedback.

glad mantle
#

There is a backup one to be clear

#

but like

#

they could've just made that the actual selector???

#

Its genuinely the dumbest design choice in the entire car

#

and I would never defend it

#

Other than that, as a daily driver, it's by far the best I've ever had

#

Most of the time when I adjust things I just use voice commands

#

so I don't have to fiddle with anything

#

and also for things like track mode the screen is a godsend. being able to adjust power ratios and traction control on a granular scale is very nice for competition

jagged wagon

They have just made road safety significantly worse

#

so basically we have cars that look (subjectively) far uglier, are less safe, less fuel efficient, cost more, and would be better for most people as wagons or trucks

Big SUVs are also difficult to park. And drive anywhere with smaller roads. And guzzle gas like a truck.

Yep, Euro / Japanese compact vehicles are great. They'll even function as work vehicles, if you're willing to "sacrifice" the luxury of having a spacious interior and/or 2nd row seating. Not great for families, mind you, but otherwise definitely an affordably economical option.

glad mantle

I mean funnily it's part of why I like my Model S. The liftback and its sizing functionally make it much more like a wagon than a sedan

And technological advancements have come a long way in the last few year

#

There will be more choice, there will be more supply, they will be technologically better

#

Don't get me wrong, I personally also drive an ICE car, and I made the decision that EV wasn't a good fit yet based on the current supply and my needs

However, many anti-EV people are just claiming they'll never drive any EV based on some fallacy they made up just to make them feel better 😛

# charred depot Road tax is expensive

For motorcycles in Sweden it’s damn cheap, $36-40 depending on dollar value or 37€. Also basically same for older hybrid and now electric vehicles.

That being said they escalated the price for pure gasoline/diesel because as they all 500-2000€/year

charred depot
#

The UK road tax system is total nonsense due to having 3 active systems. Pre 2001, 2001-2017 and Post 2017 and ofcourse free over 40 years old.

crimson blaze

Also own a pickup that got around that a little by also running on natural gas. You get kickback plus lower tax

What about hybrid or environmentally friendly vehicles?

charred depot

Post 2017 and from this year all vehicles including full EV's pay a standardised annual fee.

crimson blaze

To me co2 is a hoax, no matter what you want to do it requires energy and yes you can be more efficient but ultimately somewhere you gonna release co2

#

Building an solarcell produces co2

#

You going for a run gonna produce co2 and ultimately unless you been running all you life you gonna be producing more co2 per km than a elit runner based on weight 😅

#

Should we just stop to live?

charred depot
#

its all bad but what can you do, old shitters have their place though IMO alot of people only do as little as 2k miles a year in which case a EVs production energy is a waste.

crimson blaze
#

Well yes that argument is sound, but i don’t like those studies because they really don’t go down to the rots like. How long does a battery last if almost never driven? How bad does one fossil car damage environment. Also they usually don’t include the fuels we have in EU/sweden with 10% ethanol. You probably gonna change tires. They are bigger on ev etc etc. Impossible to argue

#

That goes for all other ev vs combustion engines

charred depot
#

regardless of that most cars get scrapped by the time they are 10 years old here anyway for whatever reason I dont think EV's are going to be much different.

#

Most have perfectly fine engines

crimson blaze
#

Yes i actually heard 7 years here but it sounds low

#

So right there society does it all wrong. What if all cars where the same or just two versions. Then we could reuse parts

charred depot
