So I inquired about this on reddit and got downvoted to oblivion so I figured I'd ask a similar question here and see what you "level" headers have to say.

#

I'm very curious about the voracity of this report. Not saying it's necessarily wrong, but it claims the cybertruck sold 16.7k units in 2023, when it was only on sale for 2 months. Meanwhile, 2024 YTD is 28.8k, and yet back when it recalled every truck it had sold between November 2023 and April 2024, the number of affected vehicles was listed at less than 4,000.[1] I'm actually curious about this.

Can anyone explain HOW automatic transmissions exist with the laws of physics when there is no physical connection between the engine and wheels.

Like I get it that water can push stuff. BUT HOW IS IT NOT LIKE 8000% LESS EFFICIENT

civic spoke
halcyon grotto
#

There's a toggle switch on the hub that tells the wheel it's in automatic mode

pure pond
#

@charred depot you said that you only had injectors failed because people didnt change te fire seal right? Mine didnt even had them 😂

charred depot
#

yeah that'll do it heh

stiff bloom
#

No laws of physics breaking required

wintry cliff
#

That's where the laws of physics are being broken

#

Now if you just welded a pipe between the two I imagine 1000W to 990W

stiff bloom
wintry cliff
#

Well you get the point

stiff bloom
#

In the windmill analogy, put them both in the water and the transmission rate goes up a ton

wintry cliff
#

Well yeah I guess it would go from 1000W to 200W

#

But like that's still not a lot

#

Do they just use like... extremely high viscosity fluid?

#

Like honey or something?

stiff bloom
#

The windmill analogy only serves to communicate the underlying principle

wintry cliff
#

Well I get HOW it works, but I don't understand the math behind it

#

How does the math and physics work

#

I understand when you're starting at a dead stop they increase the torque with a weird gear thingy and that definitely would add more force to the water

#

But after that... I don't get it

#

Wait a minute... I think I get it

stiff bloom
#

To increase efficiency, they implement the following:

-use variable viscosity, highly communicate fluid
-put both input and output sides in a small, enclosed system
-precisely design the Impellers on both sides to interact efficiently with each other
-implement variable geometry in the input and output sides

wintry cliff
#

I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT

#

Centrifugal force?

stiff bloom
#

And finally, many of them have locking capabilities

stiff bloom
wintry cliff
#

No

#

But it would make sense if you take into account that centrifugal force could add more power to the water

#

And that's because it's in such a small enclosed chamber, and spinning

stiff bloom
wintry cliff
#

Well im wondering how the water has enough power

#

Or mystery liquid

#

Cause generally inertia would be a problem

halcyon grotto
#

They use indicator fluid

stiff bloom
#

It has enough power because the output Impeller gives it power

wintry cliff
#

Well yeah, but I didn't think it gave enough lol

stiff bloom
#

It does

wintry cliff
#

But I forgot that it's not only the force of the turbines effecting it

wintry cliff
#

For a normal house fan centrifugal force is extremely minimal and doesn't really do anything

#

Buy if you put it in a small chamber, that would be an added force to give it significantly more influence

stiff bloom
#

Centrifugal force only describes the force that pushes the fluid outward

wintry cliff
#

Yeah

#

And if it pushes it outwards and forwards

stiff bloom
wintry cliff
#

Then it's like 50% stronger or something

stiff bloom
#

It's closer to the ducted fan principle

wintry cliff
#

Yeah

stiff bloom
#

Or the ground effect

wintry cliff
#

Okay well the way I'm thinking about it is

#

Centrifugal force creates a sort of cyclone

stiff bloom
#

Really the extra efficient is just cause "we designed the components better"

wintry cliff
#

And cyclones are good at traveling unreasonably high

#

Or in this case, forward, to the other turbine

stiff bloom
#

Uh. Maybe. A little

wintry cliff
#

I just forgot how physics work 😂

stiff bloom
#

But it's not really about centrifugal force

#

The effect that has is really small

wintry cliff
#

U right, I'm gonna stop yapping and read what u said

#

I'm being impulsive and stupid

#

I'm sorry, thank you for trying to explain this to me

stiff bloom
stiff bloom
wintry cliff
wintry cliff
stiff bloom
wintry cliff
wintry cliff
#

Which automatic cars LOVE desperately trying to achieve

stiff bloom
# wintry cliff Isn't that usually used in the final gear?

No, you might be thinking of "overdrive", which has nothing to do with torque converters.

The "lockup" feature is independent of any individual gear. It often is used even when shifting gears at higher speeds. Theoretically it could be used in reverse if the manufacturer programmed it to, but that wouldn't be very useful.

stiff bloom
#

In this case, the "thing that made the fluid move" is the engine side of the torque converter, and the "perpendicular surface" is the transmission side of the torque converter.

#

Basically, its a phenomenon that moving liquid experiences in a confined space that increases the forces between the walls of the combined space more than simply pressure can account for.

wintry cliff

That makes sense, thanks

I was volunteering at a food bank, and we had just picked up a load of canned food, and the lady that worked at the warehouse told me that she could get that forklift RIGHT in the back. @dusk ocean so I watched the second episode of the Stanceworks F40 build. I was skeptical but uh, that shit is looking like its going to be wild. He's doing it right, bought a full custom built chassis table, got measurements from a completed car, plans to get full interior and exterior 3D scans, etc.. Going to Germany in the next episode to buy the engine.

Looking to design their own tube chassis that's better than the original which, I agree with him, after nearly 40 years might be doable.

stoic ledge

Ngl mine doesn't have it as it never was an option 😛

prisma frost
#

Heated seats, climate control, steering wheel buttons, headlights washers

#

I only added headlight washers to make the list longer sadlinus

prisma frost

To be fair my car is the Highline which is the most luxurious trim level.

stoic ledge
#

Sorry, can't hear you over my massaging ventilated seat while the car is auto parking in a parking lot

stoic ledge
#

Highline often didn't add much tbh, most is still from the options list

NL never got many Highline cars anyway

#

Also, for the 1.2 TDI, they offered a "Highline" in NL but it wasn't a real Highline KEKW

#

It was a Comfortline with some of the additional Highline equipment but it wasn't a real one

prisma frost
stoic ledge

stoic ledge
#

My sister has a German "Match" trim which is equipped like a well equipped Highline (heated seats, auto AC, half leather, power windows in the rear) but the Match isn't based on the Highline but on the Comfortline, so it has cheaper front headlights, doorcards not upholstered and no steeringwheel controls KEKW

prisma frost
#

Weird indeed

#

I’ve seen some weird german trim levels in NL

The TEAM one idk if its german or nl

stoic ledge

I like it with the logo

stoic ledge
#

Also people who do rear wiper delete, that's just stupide

prisma frost
#

Idiotic

stoic ledge

Yeah a cars rear needs a logo

prisma frost
#

If ur car sits in the rain while ur stopped, rain just collect onto the rear window and blocks ur view

#

And the wiper doesn’t look bad at all

#

Doesnt always look good on other cars

But for the most part its kinda always the same for other cars

stoic ledge
#

Yeah I don't get it at all

#

stoic ledge

That has generally been a feature on everything for the last 50 years yes 😛

prisma frost
#

You can like flip the rear seats or whatever you’d call what ur seeing in the pictures and then put the seats down flat

prisma frost
stoic ledge

No tire well, so if you have a spare it's on top of it

stoic ledge

prisma frost
