What’s the best brand of car?

#

I’m just not really sure which car to get next.. I drive a 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI diesel. Almost 100k miles it’s all paid off, I probably want a hybrid or something that’s economical but also comfortable.

…also wish I could get ventilated seats but that only comes on super new cars ugh.

"As a result, a thriving ‘grey market’ sprang up, not least because many buyers found it was actually cheaper to buy a car overseas and import it than to buy one from the manufacturer’s US operation. There were also instances where the European or Japanese model was simply more powerful – or subjectively more attractive – than its US equivalent. Both of these things hurt US sales, and by the 1980s tens of thousands of foreign-built vehicles were being privately imported each year." https://www.autoshippers.co.uk/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-25-year-rule

cold anvil

the amount of old cars i hear people daily in the US and eu

mainly cuz ULEZ

stoic ledge
#

Used UK cars are worthless as there's no export market

cold anvil
#

well obviously theres no export marker

#

our cars are RHD

#

your customers consist of japan and australia

stoic ledge
#

Exactly, which heavily impacts the residual value

cold anvil
#

fairs

#

and any car in japan or australia uk probably has

cold anvil
stoic ledge
#

True, and practically nobody is shipping a UK car across the world

cold anvil
#

people do that to the uk tbf

stoic ledge
#

Towards the UK, yes

cold anvil
#

the amount of imported VWs and toyotas from japan

stoic ledge
#

To get some JDM stuff

#

Exactly

cold anvil
#

nah

stoic ledge
#

But not the other way around

cold anvil
#

its toyota priuses imported

#

nothing special

stoic ledge
#

💀

cold anvil
#

also if japan and australia dont allow impotts what can you do

#

u dont have any other country really

#

the imported prius lifestyle goes japanese person -> imported to uk-> does 200k miles as an uber -> ends up on sale for £2k

stoic ledge
#

Fair

#

But yeah in mainland Europe cars get exported quite lot, which means even older cars keep their value as there's always demand

charred depot

charred depot

#

as I say keyless entry (literally)

cold anvil
#

but car theft in london is worse

#

thieves will assault you in broad daylight, grab ur car keys and run off with the car

charred depot
#

Even so no one is going to steal a Citroen GSA or Peugeot 305.

charred depot
#

would be the height of desperation, they wouldnt even get the Citroen GSA started.

#

such a piece of shit to get going

cold anvil
#

most cars stolen now are keyless

#

and within 4 hours its out of the country

#

the met police wont do shite aswell

charred depot

Common cars are hard to track, all they have to do is stick another plate on and its the same as anything else.

stoic ledge
# cold anvil to where

Wherever is demand lol

My brothers "old" Volvo get exported to somewhere, idk where, but that's as it was a diesel which is hated on in NL, but not in other countries

His first car, a Clio, some student from Belgium purchased it, because some ULEZ-type city he was studying, and as Belgium at the time mostly drove diesels importing a petrol car was the solution

My sister in laws car comes from Germany, often you can find specs there you cannot find here. My parents cars is imported from Belgium.

Cars just go wherever demand, and demand increases prices

Two rockers on the center console for heated seats, dials and buttons for climate under the nav/stereo screen, dials on stereo for channel and volume control along with rockers on steering wheel, buttons on steering wheel to do handsfree phone stuff, touch screen for nav, program some handsfree phone stuff, and to select which audio device to use (like bluetooth or CD or radio).

Simple, elegant, you can wait for a stoplight or until parked to do anything that requires the touch screen.

My mom drives a Model 3, I had to take it once and I was cold, went to turn the temperature up and realized I was almost halfway into the oncoming lane by the time I was done. I should of been switching my focus more and I am newer driver but my WRX doesn't have that, it's a quick glance to make sure my hand is near the needed dial, than just feel for the dial and adjust. I can see the temperature on a little display right under the windshield so eyes stay close enough to the road that I can hold my lane and speed.

#

This isn't my car but it's pretty damn close aside from the buttons inbetween the dials and red accents

Yeah, the trend of higher front grills (that often do nothing) as welll as center infotanment units to do everything are killing more and more people

#

but, thats what the majority want, to be dominating and minimalistic/futueristic

#

It does not help that in the US by law for aesthetic reasons like tint, SUVs and trucks are often committed while smaller, safer for pedestrians, sedans and coups have to follow stupid and often not enforced laws. The EPA also encourages manufactures to create heavier cars to avoid meeting emissions/efficiency guild lines

#

Because muh american horse power, a lot of cars come turbocharged these days making them majority of the time more inefficent as well, which is funny

you can’t really just increase only air that means you have to increase fuel too

#

turbochargers just squeeze more power out of an engine

#

but that allows the engine to be made smaller which is more fuel efficient than a bigger naturally aspirated engine (most of the time)

#

(also because it’s squeezing as much power as possible out of a tiny engine it’s in theory less reliable/more stress but that’s a different topic)

# nocturne iris Turbos do boost efficiency by increasing the air to fuel ratio increasing the ho...

Turbo chargers do not”boost air to fuel ratio”, all engines run roughly at a 14 (air) to 1 (gas ratio). The ONLY THING they do is force in more air.

  1. They however have parasitic loss and decrease scavenging on the exhaust stroke
2)Turbo charged engines run hotter then normal engines due to burning more air and fuel in a relatively smaller combustion engine generally requiring running richer (more gas not burned) to prevents hotspots that can cause knock (pre ignition)
  2. they have to run a lower compression piston to prevent knock (pre ignition) from compressing the denser air being forced into it from the turbo charger decreasing efficiency further.

How do you boost compression? You need something to increase airflow, to increase that compression. Either a supercharger or turbocharger. Turbos are more efficient than superchargers as long as you drive it not stupidly. There's an observable difference between non-turbocharged and turbo-charged cars. Even with modern cars being heavier than old cars, they're more efficient because of Turbochargers.

restive gazelle
#

We aren’t talking about just the PSI in your engine head, the smaller you can get the internal surface area down the higher you can push efficiency

#

Part of why smaller engines are also more efficient

dull cedar
restive gazelle
#

turbo charged engines are also more inherently complex which can make servicing them more of a PITA but shouldn’t be your deciding factor

coarse jewel

And any modern cars shifts at pretty low RPMs
