2007-2013 was R56, but there were four different motors; N12, N14, N16, and N18...
N12s and N16s are fine, other than the normal bimmer valve cover seal oil leaks and timing chains being more fragile than some of honda's, they're fine
N14 was problematic, mostly because they liked to eat timing chains and nuke themselves violently in a multitude of ways. N18 mostly fixed it other than a HPFP recall (2010-2012) and some thermostat and water pump issues with some...

2007-2010 was N12 for base model and N14 for Cooper S, 2010-2013 was N16 for base model and N18 for Cooper S (2007-2012 for JCW with the N14)

2014+ had the B48/B46 in the cooper S and the B37(?) in the Base models (this is the same engine in the i8 btw), both are great motors.
