Used UK cars aren't worth much as there's no export market really
when you’re coasting down a hill foot off the gas, is there any fuel being injected still? Or is the engine turning completely on its own from the wheels
Zero fuel should be used when engine braking. Injectors don't inject anything.
Interesting ty
I wonder how the car knows when you’re for example coasting up to a light
when to add the fuel back in and stop engine braking
I mean. If you're not giving it a load. Then it just won't try to add power.
The accelerator is a pedal that requests power.
If it isn't being pressed down, then you're not requesting any power from the engine.
wouldn’t it just stall out then?
I mean when it transitions from using no fuel to just enough to idle yk
If you're just coasting in gear, then you would stall eventually. Yes.
in a manual you would, but an automatic?
it doesn’t happen so there’s got to be some way for it to recognize “below x speed maintain y rpm with z fuel” idk
In an automatic it would downshift. And still have enough torque to keep itself from stalling.
gotcha
it’s probably once in 1st it stops any kind of engine braking
I could probably watch the little mpg display to see when it goes from “99.99999” to a lower number when it starts injecting fuel again
however, please do note that the highest gear isn't always the most efficient
don't be a dimwit and try to accelarate from 5th gear
you're wasting gas
true
is the rpm range that gets you the most power the most efficient though?
when I go up this one hill going to work the car starts slowing down in 4th more than I’d like it to
so I downshift to 3rd and it sustains the speed but the current mpg drops even though I have the gas pedal in the same position
Mine actually starts injecting again under a certain rpm when coasting in gear to prevent it from getting to low
As it runs on LPG, and those injectors are a bit louder .. it's easy to hear 😛
Depends on the load and other factors
But for fast acceleration, yes
@stoic ledge
April fools joke?
A bit late for one of those lmao
Although old VW were pretty reliable.
Well they're not wrong
Yeah. Old VWs were the more reliable ones. New VWs toss that reliability out the window
It'll probably break the moment it leaves the factory
Guess-O-Meter in the E-Tron is very accurate tho
Range anxiety what's that
6km remaining range gg ez
(left with 90km, driven 82.6km so not bad)
Exactly
Also, reading the charge value through OBD, it actually had 10% ~ 8.7kWh left displaying 6km
So they're using a massive buffer
Also, at that charge level they're limiting you to 25% power
So I was driving a 2500kg car with 100hp
The get up and go got up and left

gotcha that’s what I was thinking
do you always have the dash like this?
so many numbers and words
seems cluttered to me lol
Usually I have the driving assistant stuff there
Although I don't really look at it too much
It has the heads-up display
Most required stuff is in there
Same, tbh. I prefer a tach, speedo, fuel, and temp guage
Also, not too bad I think?
Well there's no temp on an EV
"Fuel" is on the left but tbh I only look at the range
And the speedo on the right, and a "tach" (power meter) on the left
Also, there are 2 more screens in the car, besides the 3 screens this car came from the factory
Too many screens so I don't really focus on the driver display
Love the beeping vibes
back on the road for another year
so my gmc has 4 full range 6.5" speakers, 2 1 inch tweeters, and 2 8 inch subwoofers. none of it is factory. should i replace the front 2 speakers with woofers to get a better sound stage?
I have windscreen cover but I think they would writeoff my car heh
would have to pull out the moulds just for me
dude if they did inspections in kentucky like that all of my vehicles would fail
rust rust rust
and more rust...
you just get a massive plate weld it and forget about it till next year : )
I remember seeing a E39 where like half the underside was just plated with thin steel
nothing cut out just massive plates stuck underneath
my cavalier has had the front and rear subframes break due to rust
alot of manufacturers seem to just forget that subframes need proper rust prevention I dont get it
That front fender is suprisingly clean for a 10 year old salt belt truck
i really wish i would have painted the replacements now that i think about it🤦
especially when they are just pressed sheet metal
if i had pics of the dakota without the fender flares i'd send them
By the time a 305 subframe rusts through the car is gone 8 times over
she is rotted on the bed
I can tell just by the rust on the bedside.
Never buy a white commercial vehicle heh
actually no it's not hardly, my dakota has pretty ok bed rust
the rust ooze just makes them look tragic no matter what
like every slightly aged transit van here just oozing with rust on white paint
it's a hell of a lot better than i remembered
Cab corner looks intact too
i'll get you some pictures later. it has rust that breaks my heart
small spots on the door inside, cab corner has some rot
I dont mind the inspections but its annoying when you fail on a finger size hole affecting nothing you have to pull the entire interior out to weld
zero ZERO frame rot
or risk setting your car on fire
i bet ohio would probably fail my gmc
it's got holes on the frame. i don't know if they care about rust though.
id say in a way we are more leanient on emissions than you
If its a safety inspection, they're gonna care
but one rusty hole naaah get to fuck
Sounds like an ambulance if you ask me
How much did it cost you to bribe the MOT inspector?
£45 standard price

there's good trucks and bad trucks out here. 2016 with bed rust and 1998 1500s with no rust
never bribed they just love them that much
Then you have the newer alluminum F-series pickups
nah the guys pissed off because a friend of mine took him some hot garbage which had no chance of passing.
like he is fair but dont push it to the extreme
Just not as fast.
Frame will be gone before the alluminum starts rotting away
definitely don’t do it in the doors
can’t stand that in my car
They aren't even making it off the lot before they start rusting
so much vibration
We've had really old cars with like aluminium boots and stuff and they are mint while the rest of the car is falling apart
it's not a subwoofer, just midrange
I know, but aren’t you saying you’re considering doing that?
or are you talking about the dash speakers
sorry was on reddit
my cavalier has midrange door speakers and they sound amazing, but my gmc has 200$ of kicker 6.5s full range and i'm considering replacing the front 2 with mid range woofers
i may replace all 4 with woofers and add tweeters in the rear. i'll have to think about it
doing more research and i think i'm going to get 3.5 inch tweeters to replace the 1 inch ones, get foot woofers and put the 1 inch in the c pillar
em all been lookin the same for few years
havent seen anythin good from renault since 5 turbo
the old ones looked better imo
what will happen if we see this combo in f1
3 rotor hybids vs v6 hybrids
i mean remove all of the bullshit just the engine the transmission the wheel the driver
They are 1000hp this season
I don't mind it?
It's one of the best looking cars in the segment imho
The rotor would crack that very easily too
didn't they have well over 1000 in the 70s?
i don't watch f1 but they should ditch the v6 hybrids and go back to v8s
turbo v8 f1 cars i would watch
If they put the rotory engine
not a rotary guy
It will be better than the v8
not as cool
The dorito, the exsentic shaft and the bearing
Ultimate f1
V10 vs 4 Rotor vs the new stuff
Old vs new
Oh the rotory is really cheap to make
If that v6 costs 18mil
That thing is barely going to cost 5
We check out the 2,300 HP Koenigsegg Gemera at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Car Week and end up securing one of the last available Gemera allocations.
#Koenigsegg #Gemera
do people say mega car? @fathom socket
a mega car is an excursion.
a turbo diesel excursion is the only mega car
hyper car is what i imagine he meant
i don't really understand why they have to be classified to be honest. it's a car either way, super car works for al of them
car works for all of them
1341hp = 1 megawatt and that is why Koenigsegg calls the cars megacars nowadays 🤓
In the love of god I will never buy that
Even tho it's cool even tho it's fast
I won't buy it
how many hp do I need to get a gigacar
=1.34?
nvm me me dumb
only kilocars for us poors
Atleast 4
Oh my God this is so frustrating right now!
It's pretty clear to me that we need to sell this and move on. (Ignore June it was in the shop)
But we have to find something to replace it.
The budget is 50k-ish (+/- 10%) USD and we need to see costs per month reduced
Trailer weighs basically 6k lbs. If we upgrade will be staying under 10,000 pbs
Any suggestions? Truck is worth 20k-ish. May need to sell at 15k to get it gone quickly.
(@ me, I am on mobile)
..wat
yes for the 2006 Duramax
but i cant keep spending this much knowing the value isnt increasing. $24k a year to drive a 2006 truck is crazy
I mean at this point it honestly doesn't matter we just need something that makes sense.
Because if these values fall this truck that I could sell today for $15,000+ could be worth $6k and we arewell over that in parts in just 12 months.
Combine that with the fact that we're right around that mileage where they become ticking time bombs and a replacement engines starts at $12,000 like it's just a really really bad bubble to be involved in.
Like we did the what if right. What if we just said screw value and we just continue to replace parts of this truck ages.
Well it'd be $25,000 for a motor and transmission. So now we have a $45,000 truck 😬
No.
We ended up with it because it was a deal that we simply could not pass up. We originally were going to just sell it because I knew that we were in it substantially less than it was worth.
But then somebody totaled my 2003 8.1L that had basically EVERYTHING from front to back new.
No we have to stick with new because of fine print and warranties and just the fact that people think these things are worth way more than they were when they were brand new.
But I'll take a peek let me see what I can find.
That's about the same fuel mileage that we currently get. And that seems awfully overpriced for a 5-year-old truck.
A base model one too.
Yeah that doesn't make sense to me that truck's worth like $19k
So the fuel cost for my will be the same as what we currently have so I won't really help that much there.
And then we're spending $40,000 to get it so that just seems a bit silly
Especially without the lack of bumper to bumper warranty which means you're looking at having a loan and repairs it just doesn't seem to pan out.
*Stares at differential failures. *
That's why I was like there's no way I'm just going to have to buy new.
cuz there's no way I'm paying these numbers for these bubble cars.
That's why we're looking at new only.
I think we're just going to have to go electric.
That's the only way to get price stability when it comes to fueling.
Because for instance fuels gone up 50% since August 1st. If electricity was to go up they have to announce that at least 90 days in advance giving you plenty of time to sell.
Well at 55,000 there is really only one option that can tow.
Arizona
Was $3.20 now $5
Model X can't really do it. Technically it can but you're talking about $90,000.
Rivian in theory... Is $75k but that's before options.
And that leaves lightning at $49.9k
You could try with a model y. ($50k)
Both the X and the y would be overloaded the problem is the Y doesn't have air suspension so it's going to be dangerous dynamically.
🤷 it's dumb. Shot up and now it's not coming back down.
3.20 is wat I paid for diesel Aug 1st
$50k
Anything over that's going to put us at $800 a month or more on payment
Glares in $2,000 payment
So the thinking is is currently the average $400 a month in maintenance parts. But that doesn't include any major assembly failures.
And our average cost per mile is $.33/mile in fuel however I managed to avoid paying the high fuel prices because I filled up my 100 gallon tank for LTX. (Which is basically empty at this point)
So if we had a payment of $300 more than we are paying in parts that SHOULD balance out IF we can keep the cost per mile down.
- granted we are basing all this on what I know for a fact I've put down today ($10k). Not what I COULD potentially put down once I sell stuff.
But I would prefer minimum payment as possible (with a realistic interest rate)
I.e I don't want to buy a Hummer EV just because it's the same payment but I put down $30,000.
So here's the thinking behind the lightning.
Assuming we only DCFC (because that's all we're guaranteed to have access to) here is the costs.
Most owners are reporting an average of around 2 mi per kilowatt hour. It puts us at $.24 cents a mile.
Currently we're approaching $.40/mi on the current truck.
Now that is the absolute worst case scenario that the vehicle only ever sees DCFC. There's a number of free level 2 charges around so it'll drastically reduce the cost per mile.
Uhh no. I drove an empty ZR2 and it took 3/4 a mile to get to 80 miles an hour with three people in the truck.. no way.
Floored it from a stop and was going to get on the highway we looked down and realized we're only doing 40 at the beginning of the up hill ramp and was like NOPE we have to hit 80 by the end of the highway ramp. And took the frontage road and stayed floored.
Will we using Tesla network next year. That's one of the clauses of that $5 billion dollar charging infrastructure bill.
sigh, another day of trying (and failing) to convince this yard in my hometown to sell me some of the cars that have been parked there for ages. "They'll be fixed and listed on the sale lot next door eventually, just keep checking the website!" (they've been saying this for five years)
Do you know of any diesels ZR2 Colorado's that are currently for sale? Maybe I drove got one that was bad from the factory?
I know I have one on order since May 1st... It's still not built. ($55k)
Yep
Build and Price the 2023 Colorado: choose trims, accessories & more to see pricing on a new Chevy Colorado.
thats the build im still waiting on arriving. meanwhile intrest rates keep increasing....
@brittle totem What is the diesel price now in Sweden? 25Kr per liter??
Yeah its a bit over 25kr/liter now 😢
Oh shit get that 2nd Gen firebird
That's like an 80 or 81 from the hood
My first thought was “how could you tell the car came from the hood?” 😂
heater hose split bloody french cars
Solved my conundrum.
I might sound abit off
but why do people buy pick up trucks in america?
most of the people I've seen driving it doesn't even need it
They're the new luxury vehicle
it's a driving blindspot of a car
I don't like a lot of new trucks
I was gonna say it must be a pain in the ass to park that thing
So many crew cabs are only offered with 5.5ft beds
but america is like a big parking lot
Trucks aren't that bad to park honestly
But that might just be me speaking from what I'm used to doing
always smash a twizy but also price is a bit steep
couple years ago you could get one starting at 3k
that's pretty good value for the greatest car of all time
Me personally it's because I tow my trailer
I drive an a4 b5 and an f350
They drive them because they handle the potholes at speed better and they like the commanding driving position.
It's the same reason why really tall hatchbacks that they call crossovers have taken off.
But that's most cars nowadays Even when I get into Civic some like wow you can't see anything out of this.
Blame rollover crash testing.
They are engineered now to survive the crash not necessarily prevent it in the first place.
Yeah... I'm not going to be happy going from my 8-ft bed and my three trucks before having a 6.5 bed back to a 5.5.... I hated it in my RAM.
My dakota has a longer bed than my grandpa's new f150
Depends on where you are in the country in Alaska It was nice and easy
Even here in Arizona it's a bit of a pain. Especially as we're reaching the point where there's 6.4 ft wide.... Or more 🤨
With my 157-in wheelbase trucks you just learn to swing really right wide getting into the space.
Or if you're brave enough back in but without a backup camera it gets kind of hard to judge where your bumper is that sits 10 feet behind you.
Yep.
The issue for me though is the cabs have gotten huge.
I debated on getting a super cab 8 ft bed F-150 because it ticked all my boxes.
Until I realize it had 164-in wheelbase. 😬😲 Like damn! I thought 157 was bad!
To give you an idea it's 250 in long. That's basically 21 feet long.
OR
6.35 meters.
Sending property values to the moon
My a4 is about as small as I could go for a daily
lol
does your a4 have the 2.0t?
This week, Ethan is tasked with buying himself a cheap daily without ANY help from Edwin or Jack. Will he be able to find a diamond in the rough on Facebook marketplace, or will he end up buying a rusty old wagon without any help? To make it even better, we'll DIY modify whatever car he buys to give it that little touch of cool everyone wants in...
i really need to import an octavia to canada
2.8
Oh interesting
how’s that one in terms of reliability?
ik the 3.0 is good but I’ve heard 2.0 is horrendous
mfw you complete a journey without head gasket failure
Yeah that Firebird is in great shape, I've asked about that one specifically more than a few times but every time they either tell me it's not for sale, or that it'll get fixed and listed on the website eventually, which they've been saying for years now
That lot technically belongs to a towing company, so most of the cars there are customer cars, but there are a bunch of 30+ year old cars that have been sitting there for the better part of a decade that never seem to move but they still don't wanna sell
It's fine but I would much rather have a 1.8t
The 1.8t is a lot easier to work on and actually can be modded
anyone else into kei (or kei-like) cars?
I really like the Kia Soul
just get a jetta its the same thing
thats a no from me
my engine has 509,000 km on it
gonna open it up sometime in the next few months to see what it looks like and put better rods in lol
its a diesel and it will start in -10 weather with no glowplugs pretty quickly
i want to import a bunch of weird shit from europe
that i didnt get in canada
get an ibiza or a fabia
i already had a seat

i had an 04 cupra r when i lived in costa rica
I love kei trucks
Seat Leon
only if i could import the exact one i had
its like a wagon with the back cut off, still bigger than a hatchback but not a sedan
its weird and amazing
if i could fill a shipping container or 2with cars to bring it would be a p2 volvo v70 d5 turbo,a first gen octavia 1.9tdi , a honda acty, honda odyssey absolute rb1, a VE gen commodore SSV ute, and a 22re rhd hilux
all of these are old enough to be imported to canada
i just need to get a bigger garage
volkswagen LT diesel 4x4
I want one
D24, same as the engines they sold to Volvo
most powerful one was a whole 101hp
anyone know about bmw ecu's here??
specifically for models using the N52, M54, or S54 engines
I'm a big idiot when it comes to ecu tuning and programming, I'm very much a hardware man
gonna run ITB's on a M54B22 engine and want to know beforehand if that needs a piggyback ecu or not
can't run a standalone cuz I drive it off track
blah blah blah thanks in advance and whatever
ever see those Czech 8x8's?? they make some wacky shit
rather have a 1.8T over the 2.0T? or the 3.0T?
2.8
went to this parking lot and every damn car was a SUV or truck NA needs smaller cars
Breaker bar living up to its name
1.8t and 2.8 v6 are the only options in a B5 in some markets
no TDIs sadly
I know someone with an imported B5 Avant TDI, might wind up tuning it for him someday
now im upset.
😔
at one point I was planning on getting an impact at a weird size thinking “oh I can just use adapters”
I am glad I didn’t
only ever use adapters on low torque things
so on a ratchet
never on a breaker bar or impact
gotcha
and uh... don't use cheap braker bars to do really high torque stuff
destroyed a couple last year
was a good excuse to buy a nice teng bar
but impact adapters MINT
also just buy harbor fright breaker bars, but make sure teh screw doesn't back out (loctite) they are lifetime warranty.
I'm not american
ahh
mine starts pretty quick for a idi but smokes out the entire street heh
never have never will
??? that's literally an adapter in the pic
magnuson 40pc on top babyyyy
you do realize that's not my image right?
you said absolutely nothing that would've indicated that
stop being a mouth breather please
lol what
this isn't a meme channel
it's almost as if it's a car channel and I've posted something related to cars
since when tf did motaworld start charging for taking in batteries
I need another $2500 car, Something German or Japanese this time
I don’t know why but a 1998 maxima is speaking to me or I get back into old bmws
That some bs alright
The harbor freight breaker bar i have has tolerated me jumping on it with my full weight lmao
Well you post a picture like that with no context people, including me, are going to be thinking that's your tool that you broke lol
Agreed
Ive broken a decent breaker bar but I had like a 4m pipe on it and 2 people.
305 lower balljoints always a joy to change, probably more a issue with the age of the cars.
Impreza I had was quite a decent design so much so that it advised like unbolting the balljoint rather than splitting the tapered section as it was actually easier.
ive broken 3 in the last year and its making me feel really stupid
all trying to take the wheels off my volvo
i broke 2 when i first got it and said fuck it ill take it to a shop and get them to install my snow tires and then the bolts will be cracked loose. and then i got the car back and then broke another breaker bar
Wtf did you get the breaker bars? Harbor Freight, or is it Princess auto for you up in Canada?
they were all stanley breaker bars
My genuine reaction
Stanley is some good quality stuff too
those volvo wheels are something else cause i used those exact breakers bars to change the wheels on a cat 966 loader
Your Volvo must have something against Stanley breaker bars
Damn,
@misty mantle i just visited the cobalt facebook page and lost brain cells
Rip. There’s a reason I only have Facebook for marketplace. And you can lose brain cells looking at that sometimes too
Facebook is the only place where there still is a cobalt community
Bmws are definitely something
That's a tiny tool kit
And is that all quarter inch drive?
beamers
problematic
German engineering ™️
I didn't even know they made 1/8" drive tools
It's more the fault of the previous owner than the car itself
It's just when it does have problems it isn't exactly the most fun to work on
1/4th with 1/8th adapter
I remember having this japanese style mini rachet
I'm sure that's like non standard as well
smaller than quarter inch
1/8 inch drive is the worst thing i've ever heard of
imma ask essentially the same question I did yesterday
can I run ITB's with just a remap? or do they typically require more than that ecu side
n54b22 engine in an E85 chassis
Probably custom standalone setup or alot of ECU trickery.
Why do you want ITB's what's already done to it?
👌 👌 cheers for that
i feared that would be the answer lol
I want ITB's because I love the throttle response of that engine and like the NA powerband
that and it's something different I guess
gonna do ITB's and hill climb cams
so far nothing has been touched engineside, just brakes and handling
might do a piggyback ecu cuz I wanna keep it street legal
or at least legal adjacent
if that's an option that is, I have no clue when it comes to ecu gubbins
Where do you live?
Yeah im in Scotland just do it heh
fuck yeah nice
as far as I'm aware you can run a standalone ecu and won't ever run afowl of the law unless u crash and the police inspect your car
and otherwise it's basically fine
there's no devoted traffic officers on the Isle of Wight anyway so nobody has told me to take the ironing board of a GT wing off my boot lid yet
I run older stuff which is generally more lenient emissions systems wise but you shouldn't have any issue running a standalone ECU aslong as you are insured for it.
👌 good to know, cheers
gives me something fun to fiddle with also then tbh
easier to learn ecu shit off a standalone than with trying to work on a locked down one as far as I'm aware
initial setup I'll pay somebody else to do though lol, fuck that
sadly I can't pass emissions on mine with a decat lol
i bought it straight piped but had to fit a proper exhaust
still get gurgles and few quiet pops through the new exhaust at least
Z4 dials are weird
kinda miss when my car was classic BMW Christmas tree, cuz it looks weird without warning lights in the middle lol
might turn all the lights back on even tho it's fixed
still waiting for a decent price on an F80
they're like £30-£40K here lmao
yeah it’s like the same in usd here
was going to trade my x3 m40 for one but now i think i’ll hold off
market is still bad
gotta wait till chavs own them and then u can get a broken one for cheap lol
got my Z4 off some shifty ass dude in Eastleigh with 0 service history, 1 key, no battery in it, clearly been crashed despite him being very adamant he didn't crash it
£1.2K sold as seen lmao
yeah don’t really want really want clapped one though. would want a clean spec F80
ye that'll be big money for a good while
either that or i’ll just go for an X3 M or tune my M40 as it is
You just go through the fun every year of fitting stuff back for the MOT
When we thought clapped out E46's were bad imagine what its going to be like when new BMW's become the clapped out ones.
No shitty UK car meet is complete without an E46 nailing a lamp post.
Our version of the mustang incidents but not occuring quite as much
that’s pretty funny considering i just saw a mustang on the grass less than an hour ago
Like just trying to get home in your 330i on ling long and prosper's
I came close to being the proud owner of a 320d E46 shitbox but I turned my life around
I'm happy about my 320i
i thought about getting a bmw for like 5 seconds before i started looking at volvos
Im not saying its shit because its E46 one I looked at was just fucked heh
Don't really care much about brands I have alot of french cars as I am just used to the engines and whatso in them.
i was gonna get a black w211 e350 estate but someone bought it out from under me
Considered a old Merc now and then but not sure im ready to go full grandad
i would have instantly cut the mufflers off and let the v8 sing
Id probably be buying a diesel
diesels are really rare here
v8s are too
most ofthem are packing a v6
👌 😋
I'm very surprised my car didn't come with ditch finders on it lol
only good thing on it was the tyres
the guy who definitely didn't crash it had at least some sense
HUD lifestyle is what it’s all about though
no more having to look at instrumental cluster
Think I'll stick to my physical guage cluster
Had a broken speedo for a year only thing I look down for is to see if my engine is cooking yet
my cobalt was thinking about cooking itself at woodward
My heater hose burst on a like 600 mile roundtrip and it lost too much coolant and steam cycled at the top of my street heh
it was hot asf that day and i was beating the piss out of the car and it was sitting at 210 degress
electrical tape is a godsend
Its special radiator hose repair tape I carry with me all the in my shitbox bag heh
It can fix everything except your marriage
i was suffering from a bit of poverty a few years ago cause i got stuck paying a mortgage and rent for a couple months while selling my house and i used it to basically make an old cracked 45degree coupler brand new
Ive replaced all the hoses now but had to make most of them out of silicone angles as cant buy them
Average old part part avalability
@misty mantle
Annoying as they did some very annoying angles under the dash
Fucking Mint
I was too lazy to remove the dash at the time so was a nightmare laying upside down
i was pretty fucking proud of that lol
@charred depot i found the screenshots of the ad. It was a e500

i have 3 chevy cobalts. one uses a chevy 4cyl you can trace back to the 80s the second uses a chevy lsj otherwise known as the saab lk9/b207r and the third is a chevy lnf motor otherwise know as the opel Z20NHH
shits wild

just watched that
its nuts
lnf and opel z20nhh
you can see the manifolds are the same
lsj and b207r
@stoic ledge
Yeah it's great, for the Meriva I ordered a part from the US as it was just available on amazon.com for 35€ van 250€ here
Well not manifold
But the parts sharing

what do you think of this lol
all those engines for one econo box made for 5 years
Doesn't surprise me for one bit with GM
Stuff like the Astra J also had like 3 different engine families/generations for petrol, not even counting the diesels
all of them are bombproof engines though regardless.
gm just cant make a car from the ground up to save their life
My Corsa's 1.2 originates also from like 1996
They added stuff like MPI, VVTI etc
But same base block
The Vortec V8s that the 90's pickups got are just glorified versions of GMs old carbureted V8s
yeah you can use 2.2 blocks going pretty far back with my 07 cobalt because it was mostly head updates
That's also why like a Corsa B 1.2 and Corsa E 1.2 have like the exact same engine sound
While being 20 years apart
in the 05 and 06 cobalts you can just drop in motors from 90s cavaliers
Oh yeah same with the 1.4 (Turbo) from Family 0, same block as the 1.2, different head
Iirc the 1.6 Turbo even head like the head of a Z18XER, just shorter stroke
Code on the block even said Z18XER
07 it got a much needed head redesign and 09 added vvt
lol
kinda sounds like white block volvos
I checked, Z16LET has the head of the Z18XER
all the blocks are the same they are just bored out differently
rip the poor mechanic who tried to order any parts for that
order cams with different specs and the piston kisses valve
YES
they made the lights smaller to make room for the MASSIVE grill
That's also just an ugly spec
that is true
yeah the lights are terrible
this looks a lot better but still not as good imo
those slots in the runnings lights look so weird
gaps
Just get an Alpina B3
idk why to me that looks cross eyed lol
like the headlights are looking at the grille

Best looking wagon is still the V60 tho
volvo best car
that is nice
dad was looking at getting a phev Volvo for a bit but then got a ram 1500 instead 😔
That's a very different thing lol
proably a good idea
RAM vs Volvo
quite
new volvos have been infested with a virus called geely
I think the inner debate of “practicality…. or big giant v8 brick” had its outcome
Meh didn't really have influence on those
i would sleep great at night knowing my new reliable swedish cars motor was put together in a chinese factory
but unless is specifically labeled where the motor was made you will never know
the car could be built in belgium like my old p2 but the motor was put together in china
i dont even know if they still build there but its an example
XC40 and C40 are made there iirc
was that a supercharger i heard or a trans with bad synchros
turbo
the intake is mounted right at my bulkhead where the blower motor draws in air
the sound is 8 seconds in
I know its when I start to go on boost ive had loads of these engines and never a issue with the turbo.
It sounds a bit like this car does at the end
its just a unsilenced turbodiesel intake noise nothing special about it heh
If i heard it id be checking my shit for shaft play
zero play every one of these with a pod filter sounds like that
Turbos do whine, it's just at higher revs than super chargers and it's generally quieter. When turbos start to wearout they get extra whiny. Once your past the break-in period of a new car it's a good idea to push your turbo a little to learn the whine so you have a point of reference for when it fails. Driving a WRX with 105,000km on it the Turbo is fairly whiny but has been like that since day one. WRX engines run a pretty high boost so they'd likely wearout a turbo pretty fast compared to some other cars.
Ive had one of these on 240k miles with the original turbo
CEL permanently on
Also, love how those dials look like the ones Opel used, but still they're different in such a way they still aren't the same and need multiple SKU's

you wouldnt believe how many codes that car had when i parked it
I hope less than 70 but more than 68
my cars never throw codes : )
It sounds just like a normal diesel turbo
I’m thinking of a number….
sad to dissapoint but if my memory is right it was 32
i was gonna make that car mint but the list of shit it needed was so extensive i just decided to drive it till it died and it never did
still have it
hasnt been on the road in 2.5 years but it still runs when i go to start it every few months
How it sits now
its getting raided for its snow tires soon
there is 5 year old firestone winterforce 2s on there with 3000km on them and they are an exact size match for my volvo
the old snow tires would go on those wheels and i would buy some cheap oem volvo wheels for the new ones
only thing im worried about is flat spots because this car has moved like 6 times in the last 2.5 years
best tires ive ever had
that car has them my purple car has them and my volvo has them as summer tires
ive been able to throw that swede barge into corners at 130kph with used 205/55/16 fire stone all seasons
that black car towed a jeep out of a ditch with those tires on it
in winter
and the tires on my purple cobalt are able to send all 400hp my car makes to the front wheels with minimal wheelspin
and its like a go kart on rails in the corners
Just saw a Rivian for the first time, pretty cool
Welcome to the club. There’s like 3 of them around where I live
cuz then they’ll blow up like every other subaru
Why does it say please refuel if you have a full tank
I was at the pump and didn’t give the engine a chance to turn over
Lmao
The funny thing is the fuel gauge in my old 4runner is the most accurate fuel gauge I know
It underestimates if anything
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
How about putting it in some rice?

In all seriousness though, make sure the key is all the way in the ignition, and you didn't turn it all the way to accessory mode
Is it a manual?
Damn German engineering
das auto
Have you tried jiggling the cylinder?
yes.
so to turn off the car
i... pulled the fuel pump fuse,
and removed the battery outright.
Voltswagen is gonna Voltswagen lmao
put it on concrete wood
if i just cut the battery, it would have kept running off the alternator
As it should.
so if i remove the fuel pump, i remove the fuel
no pump, no engine, no battery to make it easy.
is a tdi
is normal gas jetta
if so fucking choke it out cause it could be tryiing to run away
He said the key wouldn't move
normal meaning the godly 2.5l engine no turbo never gonna fail engine.
everything else gonna fail
the engine will never
Now that you said that, its gonna throw every rod and drop every valve
shit like this reminds me of one of my cobalts
nah, the engine legendary for not failing until 300k miles
it rolled into the street 4 times
Wait, does the key move to the crank position?
Ok, good
fucking gold
Was gonna say, if it doesn't, you're gonna have to get a mechanic out to your house
broken handbrake cables and a really shitty leakdown meant that parking it on my steep driveway the engine would slowly turn over and the car would creep out of the dirvway over the course of 5 hours
Yep, sounds like a salt belt GM with a manual
Putting in a fuse and battery shouldn't take more than 5 or so minutes
But, then again, Its a VW
The battery could be buried under half the engine
10 minutes for VW's shit battery mount
why do so many cars have horrifying places for parts
slide rails
ive gotten uber lucky
i have to remove the air filter to pull the battery
the batteries in every car i have is just under the trunk floor
Me: Laughs in no battery mount and hopes and dreams preventing the battery from jumping up and shorting out on the hood
You basically just own Cobalts
until you mentioned that i was just going to not mount the battery- thanks
the bolbo has a rear battery too
i'll use my sockets and put everything besides the trim back
Das Auto
i'm gonna leave the trim off, make it slightly easier for them not to break it this time around.
Hopes and dreams didnt help me
I had vice grips on the battery and they fell off and grounded on the body
oh
Did those burns happen with you in the drivers seat?
it's positive then negative or negative then positive when hooking up a battery again?
No they happened from panic grabbing flaming plastic
In the trunk
Ah
Positive, then negative
k
I've done it either way though
i do have it on a piece of 2x4 to hold it off the ground
while it's sitting and all
but i'm gonna sleep now
I would have just disconnected the ground and left it in the car
Oh, thats fair. Had stuff stolen from you by them before?
all that melted plastic stuck to me used to be the cargo net
plus the hood latch has an electronic lock
yes.
sleep time
Night!
Rip.
At least the entire car didn't go up in smoke
i had some good insticts when that happened
i was driving on the highway and the car just lost all power and 4 seconds later i smelled smoke
ive never pulled over and slammed on the brakes so hard
Probably enough caked on grease on that 2.9 in my Bronco that it would go up pretty quick
For once, the permanent pliers went unpermanent mode
The temporary fix worked too well
I forgot i needed a terminal for like 2 months
Needless to say i bought one that day
I think that was a sparking reminder
I'll see myself out now
That was bad
really bad
A new spring and those vice grips would be mint
They got one and i still use them lol
This happened just under 3 years ago
Nice
Like less than a month under 3 years
Hmmm so its not the amperage that kills you then
Its DC anyway
It'll definitely wake you up
Let me guess, speaking from experience?
Im certain it could manage just fine if you held one end in each hand
Try that and let us know how it goes
they perfectly fit my hand because i grabbed it when it was hot as fuck and there is still scars on my hand in the shape of it
The ole custom fit huh
You can really grip them grips.
I'll leave now
Shoes stay outside.
Heres me casually minding my own business on a ferry 30 mins after my car just tried to burn to the ground
@misty mantle
Right behind a dodge that is probably on its 5th transmission atm
I doubt those people would be too happy to know what happened to the car they are on the water with
it had the tick
Wait until they hear about the Chrysler electrical issues
Ah, so its probably on its 3rd motor and 5th trans
I’ve been there
That oil filter housing gasket made a mess
Average BMW gasket
ive dealt with one chrysler product in the last 10 years and it had no issues. fucking blown away on that one
Wow.
it was my gfs 1.4t 500l
I nearly had to deal with one, that would have been if my dad went with Jeep instead of staying with Ford. I think it was around a hour I had to suffer for in that dealer.
my grandpa was considering a new ram in 2014
to replace his 99.5 sierra with 1.3m km
My grandpa has owned nothing but Chevys and Fords
my grandma and me tore him a new one and said what was he thinking
He end up getting it or did he get something else?
he got an 06 silverado
Hell yeah
the very last of the good ones
He was one year off from having a Cateye
i fucked up the year he did have one
Oh, nvm
it was a weird pewter color
The Cateyes are really where my limit on old Chevys are
The OBS squarebody, GMT-400/early GMT-800, and Cateyes are all the good ones.
After that, you start getting into the crappy ones
ill take a gmt900 if its had the afm removed
The AFM is what really dies on those motors.
Think thats really the main big issue with those engines
@misty mantle
Looks good. It got fender flares hiding the rust?
it had no rust when he got it
Wow.
it was only 6 year old truck when he got it
What motor?
5.3
Wouldn't be surprised of that's the max amount of errors it can store
Was it still the Vortec engines at this point, or was it pretty well swapped to the LS motors?
i think the little fire ive been talking about here may have fucked the ecu a bit lol
still vortec but all the parts are interchangable with ls motors
Wouldn't be suprised
Figured.
you gotta watch out with them
One of my friends, his parents have a Cateye and I think the motor has a bit of either a tick or a knock
people will drop a 5.3 right out of a silverado and drop it into a c5 or c6 vette after blowing their motor and then they sell it as a ls vette
They forget the 5.7s exist
5.3 is cheaper
they just want their car running with A v8 so they can get their cash and buy a new vette
the only ls based 5.7 is a ls motor
the vortecs are 4.8 5.3 and 6.0
i wish they made a 5.7 ls based vortec
not a ls based one
Fair.
i want to put a 6.0 in my old cadillac but i have no idea where to start
its got a wimpy 305
I'm replacing the engine
It died
This list surprised me a bit
more hatchbacks and sedans than I was expecting
Also some of these stats are wild
In the UK there 1.6million passenger cars sold
In the US there were 13.75million light vehicles sold. Depsite only having 5x the population of the UK, 8.6x the cars sold
But
10.9million of those were trucks
the USA sells 3.75 'light' trucks for every car
My figures above are inaccurate
Because the UK figures don't include Light commercial vehicles
but in 2022 that number was only 282,139 - which includes just 29,564 pickups for the whole UK total
42,488 the year before
We have more room for cars 😂
F
My e36 was an auto I did all that maintenance to the engine and the trans started slipping bad
usa also has a massive fleet car market
some companies will roll up to dealers and buy 30 trucks in one shot
uhaul buys a fuck ton of trucks
i rent one like 3 times a year and i always am given something with less than 500 miles on the odo
car no fix until wednesday

i guess i'm taking everything out of my car and pulling the battery every time i'm not driving
Morning
drove car to work
Here's quick video to help if your key is stuck in the ignition of your mk6 Volkswagen
Might let you get the key out
yep, first things i tried were the videos that pulled up
Damn, that cylinder is really fucked
you know you could just pull the starter solenoid and the car wouldnt even turn over
Then the battery would go dead since they cant turn the key off
i thought they just cant get it out
but can still turn it of
does this mention anything about the shifter mech
They can't turn it off
No.
The key cylinder is fucked
Car in the video is a manual
pretty sure there's a thing to bypass the interlock on the autos
Its the key cylinder itself.
id have to look into it, been a minute since i had to work on a newer vw
have you taken it apart to diagnose?
you need to find a better alignment shop if thats all it took to knock that wheel out of alignment
You could have bent something
Miat
yeah and i hit potholes like that 15 times a day every time i drive and i dont need an alignment
I hit potholes every time I go to my grandparents, doesn't affect my truck
in my lowered cobalt
dude you hit a peice of rubber and now your car is fucked up. thats not normal shit
i said this to you yesterday. post shit in a public channel get comment on it
How the fuck did this argument even start
you posted about how you hit something not talking to anyone specific at all so should we just ignore your message then?
Me bob or other bob
Ross
Remember, he also doesn't drive a Miata.
I don't even know what it takes to fuck up a miata
I drive on this shit everyday i think i would know what it takes to knock a car out of alignment
My truck already doesn't have a perfect alignment because '80s American off-road shitbox
And it really isn't possible to get it perfect in mine
Heres a car that actually fell into a pothole in this city
More like a sinkhole, holy fuck
it was a pothole till dude drove over it
Dudes insurance probably wrote his Xterra off
as someone who worked in a body shop: you have no idea how much energy is transferred at highway speeds
it doesn't take much to do a lot of damage
i also worked in a body shop
Fixed audis and bmws
and the body shop I worked at did some work for RM Sotheby's, what's your point
we painted a Maserati MC12 front clip
this
That i infact do have an idea how much energy gets transferred at highway speeda
clearly not if you think hitting a truck tire at 65mph won't throw out an alignment lol
Not sure if this shows it well, but heres what I drive over going to my grandparents
a truck tire and a small piece of tire tread are two completely different things
it was a chunk of retread off a truck tire
a very large and very much solid chunk
Wtf is even the point of re-treading a Semi tire?
its usually done badly though
Cost savings
not usually
there are tens of thousands of retread tires on the road every single day
They are banned here cause of of how many retreads were flying off trucks
I hit a pothole in my volvo that cracked my strut tower and didnt need to do an alignment
that's a rust failure
I thought you said it wouldn’t cause damage
Its not. I bought this car specifically because it didnt have rotten towers. The pothole was just that bad
Bent my wheel too
Where did i say that
idk the majority of that crack looks like it's along a rust bubble to me, which means the metal was already weak there
so the strut tower cracked before your alignment was altered
literally taking a class on FMEA right now
when you were talking about how Miata hitting it at highway wouldn’t have done anything
what is that picture of specifically?
the truck it flew off of or someone who smacked it
A small chunk of tread laying in the road is different from a tread actively flinging itself apart with cars around it
I accidentally sent it it was for another message
oh gotcha
When i took all the paint off to fix it there was 0 pitting in any of the metal on the bottom or top the only thing you could see in the metal were stretch marks and stress fractures.
bloody potholes
this one might possibly just quite have been due to rust, maybe.
It seems the turrets on this got really corroded so the guy covered everything with black paint

not wax or anything just black spray paint
it was held on by like a inch once my friend started taking a pickaxe to it but even rallying it around we couldnt get it to completely fail heh
Were going to repair it but it costed so little had numerous other issues and could just buy a decent one for slightly more.
This is funny, you can have cars made out of 100 shitty MOT patches but a few holes drilled for a cage no no no
Rule 1 don't tell the DVLA anything heh
Probably a combination of that strut tower being rusted out and you driving over a pothole
I'm happy I don't have to deal with anything more than surface rust on my truck
That one was a strange one as the car overall wasn't that rusty, yknow it look decent from the outside.
Whereas like my grey 305 estate looks scruffy as hell but is solid underneath
Always get like "there's no way that has a MOT on it"
Fuck canada and fuck Trudeau
What happened this time
Mf is banning wd-40 cause its “bad for the planet” so wd-40 said well change our formula
Which means its going to be dogshit
This is the stupidest shit I have heard today
hard to get a decent paint stripper these days
Im gonna have to drive to vermont to get the good shit now
all gotta be environmentally sound
Gotta do what ya gotta do
Going to Plattsburgh isnt to bad actually
Actually, yeah, that isn't bad at all.
Nearly a 3-hour round trip, but not bad
Ill stop at the ben and jerrys factory
I washed my car which is a very rare event then we got a load of Saharan sand covering everything. God hates me.
