After 6+ months of work on this routy little 2 stroke, its running how it should be. It went for its first ride outside of my street today and did fantastic, especially since it was carrying two people. Thats all just wanted to share since I'm really happy that my bike runs : )

Imo get a volvo with a diesel engine. Those bad boys can take all kinds of abuse.

charred depot
#

Im in the UK my daily is nearly 40 years old on 154k miles with a engine on 240k heh.

#

Probably done more than that as alot of my ownership the speedo has been disconnected as gearbox upgrade didnt have the take off till I got an adapter.

tawdry lance
#

Well my speedo cable snapped in my case KEKWlaugh

charred depot

It was a bit annoying going through cities with loads of speed camera's like "I hope I am doing 30"

tawdry lance
#

I used my phones GPS as a speedo

#

Works really well

charred depot
#

My phone was decent for a while as a GPS speedo, seems to be a bit spotty as of late.

tawdry lance
#

With realdash i hooked it up to my ecu too to get some other fun values as boost pressure and revs and stuff

charred depot
#

Car doesen't have any confusers but want to setup a little screen with some monitoring.

tawdry lance
charred depot
#

More detailed stuff like cooling system pressure, etc.

tawdry lance
#

I wanna get some like servos or something and build my own custom guages that my ecu just tells where to be at or something

#

Proper racecar stuff

#

But also that doesnt cost 5 bajillion monies

charred depot
#

My cars a indirect injection diesel but I wanted to make the throttle fly by wire essentially roboticized looking at boost pressure etc

#

I like fast diesels but the rolling coal bit is a bit annoying with old basic pumps.

tawdry lance
#

Yeh

#

Imo getting something like a haltech ecu makes all that so much easier. Everything is basically pnp

#

Even for diesels cause you just say "this runs on diesel" and it converts most of the values

charred depot
#

Hardest part is getting injector drivers and whatso

#

mines is too old to have any kind of electric injectors

#

Id like to run a newer HDI eventually but need to get one running standalone.

tawdry lance
#

Tbh i think it could be easier to maybe engine swap to something newer if you cant find a new ECU that you can wire in injectors

#

I know (since i am swedish) there are ALOT of Volvo D5s lying around here

charred depot
#

Custom ECU setups are really expensive for diesels as not that much traction.

#

Id stick with Peugeot Citroen engines as dont want to be making up mounts and custom driveshafts.

tawdry lance
#

Ahh

#

Yeh i guess

charred depot
#

If I get a complete car will be able to make it work easy enough.

tawdry lance
charred depot
#

They are more expensive everywhere are diesel injectors are more complex to control

#

Essentially need to have a custom driver board made.

tawdry lance
#

I feel you should be able to just rip it out of another car and wire it in

#

But idk im more of an E85 kinda guy

charred depot
#

I was meaning for a custom ECU setup rather than making some OEM ecu work without the rest of the car.

#

Alot of post 2001 stuff has some tight integration with body control

carmine summit
#

the only diesel injection you can control with just electronics is a common rail system

#

everything else has a mechanical component to it

charred depot
#

well they all have a mechanical components

#

VP pump is basically as controlled as a common rail setup

carmine summit
#

what injection pump is on your current engine

charred depot
#

VE

tawdry lance
#

Car contains mechanical components

carmine summit
#

i know a little bit about diesels lol

charred depot
#

same

carmine summit
#

VP injection all you have control over in the ECU is dynamic timing adjustment and injection quantity

#

with common rail you can control start of injection, injector duration, injection pressure, quantity, and a whole bunch more

tawdry lance
carmine summit
#

VP37 is just a VE pump but the top half is replaced by some electronics

carmine summit
#

I'm gonna finally have air conditioning, it'll be great

#

just in time for fall

charred depot
#

Don't have much experience with VP as PSA went straight to commonrail

#

makes it annoying for injector options when MTDI'ing newer engines

tawdry lance
#

It be hot

#

Also as a side note. Old diesels are way better cause they will run on anything from crude oil to rocket fuel

carmine summit
#

completely custom, not just modified stock injectors

charred depot
#

It used to be quite common in the past here but the ECU's are so well understood at this point it doesen't make much sense.

carmine summit
#

you'd also have to use much larger nozzles because VE injection pressures are way lower than common rail

#

I'm sticking with VP37 TDIs for now, we didn't get any good PD TDIs and I'm starting to get the hang of custom ECU tuning on these

charred depot
#

Im basically stuck with VE indirect injection setup or common rail.

carmine summit
#

VW swap

#

ALH/AFN/AHU/1Z

charred depot
#

Too much of a faff would be cheaper just to buy a Custom ECU heh

carmine summit
#

once i get my car running again next project will be to strip down one of my 2 spare ALH engines to start building it

#

one has 150psi of compression, one has 2 bent rods

charred depot
#

Ive been tempted to build up the bottom end on one of my engines but have only had head issues heh.

carmine summit
#

whichever one I pick is getting the bore enlarged to 81mm, BHW pistons, Integrated Engineering connecting rods, ARP hardware throughout, and possibly a ported head and cam

#

I have a compressor wheel here for a hybrid turbo that will be efficient to 22psi of boost and will flow a TON of air with a ported head and higher RPM

#

but I'm wondering if I should do compound turbos

charred depot
#

Just run a decent turbo with a VNT : )

misty imp
charred depot
#

surge and send the head the moon

carmine summit
charred depot
#

Id like to run a VNT but know I will fuck up the control.

charred depot
#

have one of their products on my turbo atm

carmine summit
#

thats one of the things ive come across in my research trying to figure out how to use a VNT in a compound setup without exploding it

#

it would be easy if I could have 2 separate MAP sensors, an N75, and a wastegate solenoid, and have the wastegate and N75 maps read off different sensors

#

but that's beyond my skill level lol

charred depot
#

It's a daily so I really should leave it alone but.

carmine summit
#

so is mine lol

charred depot
#

Have to drive alot for work so its ideal when I dont break down on the job heh

#

just a broken shifter linkage though, left me stuck in neutral half way through the junction.

carmine summit
#

left is stock ALH compressor wheel, middle is the turbo I'm currently running, right is the hybrid I'm going to build

#

33mm, 35mm, 46mm

charred depot
#

I had a decent T2 but by some divine intervention I am sure it was on 230k miles

#

Stuck with a little K14 at the moment.

carmine summit
#

I had a T3 on but I'm going to go back to a K14 until I build the T3 hybrid

#

spools fast enough and will flow better than a VNT15

charred depot
#

The T2 even consumed the filter built into the oil feed and was fine heh

#

I have to work out a intercooler setup first but not much room without cutting alot due to being older and not having a plastic frontend

#

Probably go with a water to air setup to save cutting massive holes for boost pipes into the structure.

carmine summit
charred depot
#

No popcorn for me, these VE setups go for silly money

carmine summit
#

what size pump elements do those have

charred depot
#

9mm but swapping to 11mm is common and simple enough.

carmine summit
#

im used to VW AAZs and 1.6 TDs, which i think have like 9mm

#

ok yeah same thing basically

#

I have an 11mm VP37 for my ALH but it leaks a lot, need to order the special socket so I can take it apart and reseal

charred depot
#

Id like to leave it 9mm as the 11mm never seem to be quite right

#

something about it messing with the dynamic advance.

carmine summit
#

you don't really need 11mm on an IDI

#

that size at least

charred depot
#

alot of people have upgraded to it but usually with silly setup

#

like compound turbo's and a supercharger.

carmine summit
#

yeah

#

I used to really like the IDI engines and wanted to do everything mechanical

#

but tbh the TDIs are so easy

charred depot
#

Theres unfortunetely no middleground for me with PSA's engines. this or go full commonrail.

carmine summit
#

small investment in tools, a little bit of learning, and I have way more control

#

ive thought about a common rail swap

#

i wouldnt really gain much from it though

charred depot
#

I just need to buy a complete car really to get all the wiring

carmine summit
#

you already have a VE pump

#

I wonder how hard it would be to swap to a VP37 from a VW TDI and just use MK3 TDI/B4 Passat electronics

charred depot
#

Ive though about that but never seen it done.

carmine summit
#

keep the IDI but make it electronic

#

the only thing you're missing really is a needle lift sensor on cylinder 3

#

for timing

#

and a crank sensor I guess

charred depot
#

It does exist for these as very late ones had a VE pump with some semi ECU integration

#

was just to control the advance to replace the mechanical advance setup.

#

Lots of people have messed around with these and have not seen a VP fitted, but the charm of these has always been the lack of an ECU which may be why. Was more popular to mess with 10 years ago aswell.

#

Its time has passed getting quite hard to get ahold of now.

carmine summit
#

I'm wondering if there's some kind of electronically controlled A pump or P pump I could make work on an ALH

#

P pump doesn't have dynamic timing, idk much about A pumps

Turbos use waste, to produce power.

What makes this car unique is the factory supplied wide body kit. This was a factory option offered only for the 2 liter variant. This is the same kit that is also on the turbo and Carlos Sainz edition. Only 10 of the latter were registered in the Netherlands at the time. Of the wide body probably even less because in Belgium and NL the turbo was not part of the Toyota program, this body kit was only offered by Toyota in Belgium and the Netherlands. The kit was a costly factory option which is why only a handful of them ended up on Dutch plates, of which this is probably one of the last original Dutch wide body versions.
