And the engine will have to work harder, because of the larger wheels.

Larger wheels > Better ground clearance.

But only if they actually fit, etc.

Ah I see, I am trying to find a garage maybe locally that can change my car suspension into its AllTrack version to raise it and give it more ground clearance, tho applying such customization I am not sure where to start or even look haha

I am trying to understand fully how the tire affects the height of the car and so forth, at the moment I got 18" iirc or 19" and they are pretty thin so the ride is very rough and road noise high, looking to get 17" or 16" but unsure if I should be considering anything else in tire size or such

Just remember that when you change your rim size, then you usually also change the size of the rubber. You can for example have four separate wheels on your vehicle, all with different rim size, and rubber sizes. But if the circumference on them is all the same, then it will still be fine. At least temporary.

Increase circumference.
Increase ground clearance.

I believe that I went from 205/55R16 to 225/45R17 with my BMW.

And my winter tires being 195/65R15

I am on 235/40ZR18's rn tho they are all season tires, didnt get winter/summer ones since I dont have a place to store the other set when not using etc

Could always look for winter tires in that same size. If you actually need winter tires, and if you're comfortable with 18 inch rims in the winter.

Oh the current rims I have are pretty close to the edge and thin, when driving on highway there is a lot of tire noise and bumps are harsh haha, I definitely want to go to 17 inch but not sure if itll make that much of a difference? I guess smaller rim more rubber thing? 🤔

Yeah. Smaller rims, means more sidewall to get the same circumference on the wheel.

225/45R17 means that it's a 225 mm wide tire, with the side wall being 45% of the width, on a 17 inch rim.

Oh I see so rn I have 235/40ZR18 which means 235 mm wide tire with a side wall 40% on a 18inch rim? (sorry if its dumb, trying to understand reading those numbers haha)

Yeah, that's essentially what it means. The first two numbers is the width of the tire, and the sidewall. And the R18 is the size of the rim, 18 inches in this case.

Just keep in mind that it doesn't say anything about the size of the rim there. Just the tire itself.

What I mean is, that you can have a 18 inch rim, that's 10 inches wide, or 12 inches wide. The tire itself won't tell you that.

Yeah. So if you have a 235/45, then you would want that 45 number to be higher.

But more sidewall usually means downsizing the rim to match.
