Yup

Going to transplant the armrest too

stoic ledge

Yeah I was just wondering what the arm rest situation was like

Isn't it in the Astra H mounted to the seat?

Never offered with the Recaros, but still compatible

stoic ledge
# wraith rivet Is that the actual car Clarkson’s was based off of?

No I don't think so, they never had t-tops and the rear shoulder line is off

I think it's both not the Mitsuoka Le-Seyde (the one Clarkson drove) or the Zimmer Golden Spirit (the original). It is matching the rear quarter window more than the original tho. It's also missing the "hoses" exiting the "bonnet"

Theres a few of these in my city and one of them is made into a limo

I might be able to get a 40/20/40 rear bench, the one where you can fold down the center seat and leave the outer ones upright. I currently have the standard 40/60 one. bleak summit
#

There were a few opels that were quite the rage when I was a lot younger. To be the king of rural car-culture cool you had to have a BMW E30 or a fully tricked out Ascona B. Noone had factory new cars.

#

And you absolutely could not get an Opel Manta, or people would start looking at you strangely and hide their children.

elfin stone

I’d be the weirdo with a Kadett and a Manta, at least that’s what my dad was

US cars are driven by US drivers...

fathom socket

though to be fair, the most dangerous driver on the road is that of the nissan altima

bleak summit
#

I've never seen a worse lanehogging, cellphone using, eating with both hands, reading a book in traffic bunch of darwin award candidates.

#

Well, apart from our drunken taxi driver in Czechia.

#

Nissan Altima, does that follow more or less the Clarkson Theorem of Peugeot Drivers?

#

That those cars are only driven by people who see no other use for a car than getting from A to B because they hate driving, and since they hate driving they do it as little as possible and with no interest, so they never get good at it?

fathom socket
#

no honestly that's more of a toyota rav4

#

altima drivers are actively trying to kill people istg

#

I was doing 90 on the highway and one BLEW past me, I'm talkin 20 mph faster at least

bleak summit
#

90mph, so... 140 ish kph? That's decent highway speed.

#

Would I go faster? On decent roads and in a decent car, sure, but in an Altima even that speed causes the car to go a bit weird...

#

Especially if the maintenance standards of the rest of the US matches what I drove on in NJ and NC :p

#

More precisely the I-85 and 321N between Charlotte and Morganton. Very poor roads.

#

Not a fan of the I-78 east from Newark either.

#

Not that the roads in Norway are much better once you get off the main corridor between a couple of the major cities. The main coastal highway (E39) is single-lane in some places. And by that I don't mean one lane in each direction, I mean one lane :p

I could just get a new car but I really love my manual transmission and of course there's next to no new cars with them. So now I figure I'll just try to keep mine going as long as I can

torn walrus

Absolutely. Can always rebuild the trans too, but they usually last many years

1991 dodge daytona Shelby. I have to pull the engine out and pull it apart though. Had a miss, and then got stolen. Them driving it with a miss I think caused detonation and cracked a ring land (cracked part of one of the pistons).

zenith path
#

It looks fabulous!!! I love it! I'm so sorry it got stolen though. Yikes 😦

torn walrus
#

Got it back, this was all before we moved to salmon arm

#

I have a red base model one I converted to a turbo, manual too

zenith path
#

Yesss love it!!

torn walrus
#

The Shelby is a 5spd manual, and my old ram is manual too

zenith path
#

How many horse power?

torn walrus
#

Only autos we have are my wife's ford edge, and my dakota which I'm selling.

I figure the Shelby as it sat was 250-280hp, but 300-350lb ft of torque. Never dynoed it though, and it's far from stock

#

Car only weighs about 2800lbs

torn walrus
zenith path
torn walrus
#

The ram. Lots of room under the hood in this too lol

zenith path
torn walrus
#

As you can see, the older stuff typically is easier to work on yourself... especially with my big hands lol

zenith path
#

Ooh yea that does look bigger to work on.. We had an 83 silverado and it was my favorite car, what year is that one?

#

It's fabulous!

torn walrus
#

So if you changed the alt in your Acura, you dun good lol

Ram is a '93, last year for that body. Cummins 12v, and all the power options including ac. It's from an estate sale, it's just about to roll over to 194,000kms

zenith path
#

It looks awesome!!!

torn walrus
#

Thanks!

Is the Acura your first car?

zenith path
#

No I've had a few 🙂 I had a 02 jetta manual, an 08 civic manual, a gti 2013 manual, but my 07 acura tl type s is my favorite car so far 🙂 .. My dad was a car guy and made me learn on a 54 bel air (three on a tree) and a 99 ford f150 manual, and a few other cars. He was so excited to teach us to drive lol

torn walrus
#

That's awesome, what a cool car to learn on! Most people now have no idea how to drive 3 on the tree, never mind a manual

#

I look forward to teaching our kids for sure

zenith path
#

Ohhh yea!! I'm sure they'll remember it fondly too 🙂 those are very special memories for me for sure

#

My dad made us drive over pop cans

#

he was so pumped lol

#

What was your first car? who taught you?

torn walrus
#

My dad taught me, he usually had manuals so I watched and learned lol. I used to shift for him too.

My first car was a 1988 dodge shadow es, which was a 2.2l turbo, 5spd. It had a mopar performance computer and a cam, and I ran 14psi on it. It was a great sleeper 🤣

zenith path
#

I love it!!! That's so awesome!

#

I love sleepers too!

torn walrus
#

Oh, by the end it was spray painted black, steel wheels and a dent in the drivers door. No one ever saw it coming lmao

zenith path
#

torn walrus
#

This was the heyday of the fast and furious ricers too

#

Originally white, then sprayed it black

zenith path
#

Nice lol

torn walrus
#

I still have the grill lol, and the shifter/pedals are in my red daytona

zenith path
#

:'''') so special lol

torn walrus
#

Oh yes, I beat the crap out of that car haha

#

Lol

#

I still have the key on my ring. Lots of fun memories

zenith path
#

Aww!!! I love it!! So many fun car memories

torn walrus
zenith path
#

:''')!!!! so special!!!

torn walrus
#

Was it your dad that got you interested in cars?

#

Or were you always?

zenith path
#

Oh for sure 🙂 but that was before I even had memories lol. Some of my first memories were with our cars ^_^

#

It's funny because he always thought his son would be the one into cars but I'm the one that's way more into cars lol

torn walrus
#

Both our kids seem interested and want to help, but I think our son is more into it.

Thats good though, there's not enough women interested in them. Even knowing basic maintenance is huge... checking your oil, oil changes, keeping fluids topped up. Brake pads etc

zenith path
torn walrus
#

Yup. Knowing how to change a tire is the difference between being delayed 15 minutes, or hours

zenith path
#

Or even a safety issue! I've got a flat tire in horrible, high traffic places :/ it's good to know what to do

torn walrus
#

Absolutely

#

Are you going to ltx?

zenith path
#

No I wish 😦 Hopefully next time! I'm just starting a new job and would have to renew my passport lol. I'm in Minnesota

torn walrus
#

Ah, yeah that's more important tbf

zenith path
#

I'm sure it'll be a blast!

#

Hopefully next time.. I've only ever been to the Canadian border too so would be nice to actually check that one off lol

torn walrus
#

Yes, it'd be a good trip!

Contrary to popular belief, we don't all wear plaid though, nor are we all lumberjacks, live in igloos or drive dog sleds 🤣

#

As much as we may like playing up the stereo type lmao I know I do 🤣

zenith path
torn walrus
#

Fair haha I think we have similar winters

zenith path
#

Right of passage lol! we deserve those flannels 😛

#

It gets -27 Celsius here (just translated that lol)

torn walrus
#

Ah yeah. Doesn't get that cold in Vancouver (maybe get -10c), but in salmon arm we've had -30c

#

Way up north they get like -60 🥶

zenith path
#

Ohh dang!!

#

You mean like totally out of Vancouver?

torn walrus
#

That's up in the northern territories though. I know they've gotten -45ish up around 100 mile

#

Yes totally out of Vancouver lol

zenith path
#

Ohh okay gotcha lol

torn walrus
#

Vancouver is usually maybe -4 or -5, a real cold snap would be -10

zenith path
#

I like to think we're neighbors since Minnesota borders canada but we've also got the cold credentials lol

torn walrus
#

Yeah, definitely one of the colder states I'm sure

#

Salmon arm is about a 5-6 hour drive from Vancouver, it would be up ne of van

#

Kinda why I haven't been in any videos the last year or so since we moved lol, logistics are an issue

zenith path
#

Oh darnit lol

#

Why did you move?

torn walrus
#

It's nice though, a much more relaxed pace of life. Good hot rod culture up there too which is good. If you've ever seen rust valley restorers, that's in tappen about 15 minutes out of salmon arm.

We moved because cost of living in Vancouver was getting ridiculous even in the suburbs like langley. Plus the inlaws bought just shy of 60 acres and offered us 5 if we wanted to build.

zenith path
#

Oooh nice to have a hot rod culture!

#

ahh yea that's fair, cost of living is getting ridiculous so many places

torn walrus
#

Yeah, lots of hot rods and classics out there

zenith path
#

Minnesota has the back to the 50's fair every year and I think it's the biggest car show in the states if you'd ever want to try it

#

It's really fun to see

torn walrus
#

Oooo that'd be sweet

zenith path
#

It's easy to understand why we appreciate convertibles and hot rods in the summer lol since it's so precious lol

torn walrus
#

FIL has the perfect car for that too lol though I don't think he'd want to move it that far

zenith path
#

What car?

torn walrus
#

1956 packard four hundred

zenith path
#

Gorgeous!!

#

I can see why he loves it

torn walrus
#

Torsion bar suspension all around, it's amazing what that car glides over

#

Rear suspension is self leveling too, uses electric motors to crank up or lower the rear torsion springs to raise/lower the back to keep it level

zenith path
#

He added that himself?

torn walrus
#

Nope, it's factory

zenith path
#

Oh my gosh wow

torn walrus
#

Yeah

#

Has a 7 second delay, but it uses limit switches on the rear axle to trigger the motors

zenith path
#

that's incredible!

torn walrus
#

Feature rich for 1956 lol

zenith path
#

absolutely!

#

big time

torn walrus
#

Plus power windows and locks

zenith path
#

that's unreal for that time

#

there usually wasn't seat belts!!

#

like wow lol

torn walrus
#

It didn't have seat belts from factory, though they have been added

zenith path
#

You guys should just visit for back to the 50s!!! I bet you'd love it.. totally up your alley!

#

Perfection!!

#

Love the dice

torn walrus
#

For sure, I'd love to! I'd have to renew my passport though too

zenith path
#

lol

#

totally 🙂 .. that's kinda the big thing here too

#

I mean of course I could tout lots of stuff but yea.. that's our big thing

torn walrus
#

Tbh I let it lapse since going down to Blaine for fuel, I had a border guard yell at me because my truck was too dirty. Told me I could take my chances with agriculture or turn around and go back to canada

#

So... haven't been back since

zenith path
#

Ohh we have a Blaine here too so I was confused

#

that's bullcrap!!!

#

Sheesh 😦 I'm sorry that happened

torn walrus
#

Meh. I'd been lots before and guards were generally great so I know it was a one off... but after that was just like meh not worth it

zenith path
#

Oh totally, that sucks though

torn walrus
#

I do want to check out that 50s car show though one day. That'd be sweet

#

Worth dusting off the old passport for lol

zenith path
#

Yessss ^_^ I hope you will!

#

Nice to be around a bunch of car people

#

Nice comradery for sure

#

It's fun too just being in the area cause you'll see big groups of classic cars travelling together

torn walrus
#

Yes for sure!

zenith path
#

In Minnesota it's a big hobby too so at lots of McDonalds or whatever other places each Saturday there's a car meet. Like one of our local McDonalds has Model T's each Saturday in the summer

#

Or our town has a car show every Saturday with just the locals

torn walrus
#

Langley/Surrey is like that too with random car meets. Typically nothing that old though

zenith path
#

Ohh still fun! Can totally appreciate ^_^

#

I'm so psyched about my alternator!!! Here's the old and new one next to each other

torn walrus
#

And usually it's at either Tim Hortons or a&w

zenith path
#

That's so cute lol, love it

torn walrus
#

You should be! You did good!

torn walrus
#

That and a good socket set, breaker bar and jack/stands

zenith path
torn walrus
#

Yes it is. Stanley or Mastercrafts maximum line are decent tools, I've had good luck with them over the years.

Milwaukees m12 stubby 3/8 fuel impact is great too... it'll do the lug nuts on my truck

#

And tighten to 120+ lb ft

#

Anyway, hard to beat good tools.

#

But you can do a lot with a jack and decent socket set. That's all I had when I did my first clutch...

zenith path
#

I definitely would like just a nice kit!

#

I think I'll more than make up for it easily

#

I already did lol

#

and it was fun!

#

This is the jack and stand kit I have here now but it's still in box right now, I used a neighbors to get my job done

#

I think I'll keep it though since I want to keep doing this stuff myself

torn walrus
#

You'll eventually want a bigger jack, but it's a good start

zenith path
#

Oh really? cause I still could return it now

torn walrus
#

Eventually, like a 2 ton

#

Like I say it's a good start, and it's also small enough to fit in your trunk

zenith path
#

Maybe I should return it while I have the chance though

#

Friend of mine stumbled across this one on his street yesterday. Can't say I love the lowering and the wheels, but a mint 142? Damn...

#

Slightly higher and with some period-correct wheels, that would be awesome 😄

stoic ledge
#

Those wheels are horrendous yes

bleak summit
#

My neighbour had one of these when I grew up. More precicely, the lady of the house. Her husband always drove big classic mercs (always 20+ years old, lovingly restored), while she always had souped up smaller and nimble cars.

#

I remember she replaced it with a Porsche 924. Don't know what came after that, but I actually ended up working in the same company as her 20 years later, and by then she was terrorising the streets in a classic Mini Cooper S.

tardy harbor
#

I would do the lowering, different wheels

Another thing I'd do is change either the front blinkers or the side blinkers.

And for that paint color, I'd probably go orange on the fronts.

Looks like the designers took a little too many drugs and played far too much Angry Birds.

#

The concepts by Prior Design sort of solve it. Vorsteiner also makes it look less freakish, but I'm struggling to get onboard with the looks.

#

Perhaps it'll grow on me in time. Many BMW designs do. At first I didn't really like the E60 either, but now I think it's great.

I'd consider it too close, tbh

At least if I'm going by the book.

bleak summit
#

Looks to me to be between 1 and 2 seconds distance, nearer to 1.

#

In Norway, that's well into big fine territory, verging on loss of license (less than 1 second distance).

#

They're big on the three second rule here. Sure, you've got the braking distance there, but do you also have the reaction time?

civic spoke
#

Looks like it's less than 1 second away from the other vehicle.

Idk I've never done it and braking is something I don't want to figure out with trial and error xP

you just need a way to get it off the ground and a method to get the wheel off/tighten it correctly

😅

feral reef
#

So like

#

Surely it wouldn’t have taken long at all

wraith rivet
#

yeah

#

wait

#

so do dealerships charge a fixed “time” for each task?

feral reef
#

Seems that way

wraith rivet
#

so like they could charge you 1 hour for brakes even though it only takes like 20 mins

stoic ledge
#

Generally yes

feral reef
#

Mazda charges fixed amounts for things

stoic ledge
#

Otherwise you get "punished" for being good

#

They just bill you book hours

wraith rivet
#

ahh I see

#

scammy for the customer good for the employees/er

#

that sucks

feral reef
stoic ledge
#

If a job is set for 3 hours but it takes them 1.5hrs because they've done it 3000x due to skill, it's profit for them

Similar, if it's rated for 3 hrs but it takes them a day, they still bill you 3 hrs

wraith rivet
#

I’d hope they’d still only do 3

#

seems like some places would find a way to charge you more haha

stoic ledge
#

Then I'd switch 😛

#

If you know what you want to do, I'd hope you'd disclose the price

feral reef
#

Plus you complain and then the price magically comes done

stoic ledge
#

I don't let a contractor remodel my house and then when it's done find out it's more then I wanted to spend lol

feral reef
stoic ledge
#

Well remodelling a house might not be the right example

#

But you get what I mean 😛

feral reef
#

Yeah

#

At my company we actually do both, sometimes we charge hourly, sometimes a fixed price

#

I mean it's like IT, they have a problem, you fix it in 2 minutes and then they complain you billed them 200 bucks for just 2 minutes work. Yes, but you do have to have the knowledge to know which button to press....
