Ah fair enough. My condolences smil

#

Tbh used car prices in the UK aren't bad - though it varies wildly

#

Ah new cars, yeah the US is deffo cheaper for that. Used car market is typically cheaper in the UK in contrast to the US iirc.

brittle totem
#

True but compared to the rest of Europe it's very expensive in the Netherlands.

brittle totem
#

Oh here the yearly tax on something like Koenigsegg Regera is like €3000 a year. But at the same time your regular family Volkswagen car has like €1000 just in tax to.

stoic ledge
#

If you don't have anything useful to add... Just don't

stoic ledge
jade hamlet
#

Ah thats a fair point

stoic ledge
#

NL also has an ownership tax every month

#

I pay €61/month in tax for the mighty Corsa

#

Based on weight and fuel type

jade hamlet
#

Given the netherlands awesome pro bike stance

#

I guess im not too surprised they tax ownship that high but thonk

stoic ledge
#

So that's based on vehicle price and age then I assume?

brittle totem
#

I dont really know what our tax is based at least with cars like Cadillac escalade has like €240 in yearly tax but meanwhile our passat has like €900 in yearly tax.

stoic ledge
#

Ngl that's imho more fair then our current system

Because I can buy a 300k Ferrari and pay the same monthly tax as a Ford Focus for example

brittle totem
#

Yeah that the new Hybrid Ferrari has a lower tax rate then a GOLF GTI.

jade hamlet
#

In the UK road tax is allegedly based off emissions - however my car has a 4 cylinder 1.4l petrol and has higher road tax than a new V8 Mercedes (which has far higher CO2 output) shrug

stoic ledge
#

Oh yeah that makes more sense, I think most countries use that

stoic ledge
#

Related "fun fact": NL is quite wealthy but we have the oldest car fleet of Western Europe PogChomp

brittle totem
stoic ledge
brittle totem
jade hamlet
#

too often are status symbols

brittle totem
stoic ledge
#

Combined with the high road tax, high fuel prices... It's harder for people to save up money

#

My plan never was to drive the Corsa this long, had it for almost 7 years now, but cars are so freakishly expensive it doesn't really make any sense to get a new one

If I trade this one in, I get like €3k back for it? Private sale ~€4.5-5k? I went to look at a 2016 Astra... So 7 years old, still had to put up €13k KEKW

brittle totem
#

And for the GOLF GTE it's just €35 per year same as with electric cars.

stoic ledge
#

I'd only be upgrading to get "something new" as there's 0 issues with my car, and it has been completely reliable since the day I got it. It actuality runs on LPG which makes it very affordable to run...

stoic ledge
jade hamlet
#

from 2019, but still

stoic ledge
#

2020 numbers, I know last year they went up, iirc 2022 we had 11.8 years average

#

So Italy has still slightly older cars

#

But I do think Italy in general is a "poorer" country? Don't quote me on that and don't take it the wrong way, I'll look up some figures also 😛

jade hamlet
#

It is (thanks to brexit give it a few years and the uk will be like Italy smil )

brittle totem
# stoic ledge PHEV <50g/km are taxed at ¼ of a petrol car, although that benefits will be gone...

They have removed all of the tax benefits for PHEV company cars now in Sweden they hade stupid low benefits taxes before like Volvo V60 D3 was twice as expensive as Volvo V60 T8 in "benefit" tax so a lot of companies just got a bunch of hybrids but they never charged them anyways so they where just running on the ice engine at all times. Right now their is only benefit you get as company car drivers is on EV's where they remove €35k euro on list price. So you will be taxed lower per year if you have something like a Model y and then a base Passat and you don't need to pay any tax for the drives you do privately anymore.

jade hamlet
#

but they are 😆

stoic ledge
#

Can't find 2022 numbers, but 2021 was on average 11y5m in NL, and average getting scrapped at 17y

Although the amount of 20+ year old cars I see daily is high

jade hamlet
#

The Volvo "mild hybrids" are a joke anyway - were purely made for the tax benefits ^. 400wh battery - literally the capacity of 4 laptop batteries

elfin stone

stoic ledge

Does that support A2DP (music streaming) through BT?

How does one even call using a CD40? Has no phone buttons, or a 0 key

elfin stone

The UHP is controlled with the big knob on the radio.

stoic ledge

Hmm alright that's not too bad, GID + CD40USB is ~150, UHP4 ~50?

Well, I mean, yes, the USSR collapsed and the program got mothballed.
That said, it had a pretty awesome auto pilot system that is quite respectable.
And had some other neat things as well.
Just imagine... if there had not been a Cold War and a race to outspend the other, but like Lockheed and Boeing duking it out for the best design.

Have any of y'all ever had to deal with your dream car sitting on a lot you have to go passed every single day but can't even start to save up the money to buy it because not a single one of the job postings you've applied for in the past six months have even called you back? If so, how did you deal with it? Because that's exactly what I'm going through right now. I want this car so painfully bad, and I'm prepared to start putting in the long hours to one day make it mine but nobody even wants to give me the time of day so I have no way of even starting the grind towards getting this car. It's infuriating.

#

The car in question is a blue 2013 Mustang w/ 130k miles that's been sitting at a local used car lot with a big $8,995 sticker on it for eight months now. I'd be able to save up that amount before my next birthday if only someone would give my ass a job to do

civic girder
#

There could be a reason that car has sat there for 8 months. To be honest, that gen Mustang isn't exactly rare, so I don't think it'd be a big deal if it did sell before you finally found a job

#

And really, the only advice I can give you is to keep working at getting a job. Refresh your resume, find a mediocre job in the meantime and keep looking for that nicer one.

wind peak
#

Yeah in all honesty, I'd probably talk myself out of buying it during the time it would take to save up the money, it's more of the fact that I have to look at it every day and it's a constant reminder that the one thing I've been motivated to work towards as of recent is as of yet unobtainable through no fault of my own.

civic girder
#

Even if you're making minimum wage, its better than $0

wind peak
#

I spent 18 months getting a college certificate thinking I'd be able to make more than $7.25 once I came out the other side, only to realize the same companies who wanted me as a high school senior are the only companies who will take me as a college graduate. It hurts, but if scooping ice cream for seven bucks with my shiny new college education is what it takes to get me a car, I guess I just have to do it. Even if it'll take me years at that pay

civic girder
#

Its entirely possible the jobs you're applying to have a reason for passing you up

#

I wouldn't doubt its a really dumb reason, but still

#

Like work experience or the contradictory industry experience

#

You could also look at jobs in cities farther away

#

a 1-2 hour commute isn't completely unreasonable, and you could always move closer too

civic girder
wind peak
#

Yeah I live in the US. I've thought about moving to new zealand though. No gun violence, the tech industry has started picking up over there (my certificate is in computer support, and most of the companies I've applied for are customer service so maybe an actual computer company will want me), one of the most attractive populaces by census. But that's kinda in direct opposition of my goal of buying a car though

civic girder
#

yeah moving to a new country will only make that harder

#

The unfortunate reality with computer support is its a saturated market

#

lots of workers, not enough jobs

#

You might be better off looking at other IT related jobs

wind peak
#

I should've just gone to school for collision repair lol. Then I could have worked on cars every day. Sucks I didn't start to become interested in cars until I had already started my education.

civic girder
#

lol. It'll all work out in the end. I do hear a lot of people who work in the auto industry get too burnt out with cars to have much motivation to work on their own. Its not universal, but it does seem to happen

#

I personally would despise working on a project car or anything like that if I worked as a mechanic

wind peak
# civic girder You might be better off looking at other IT related jobs

The thing about that is that the only companies who will hire fresh college graduates with tech educations is companies who want them to do work that requires such an education, while only paying them minimum wage. It's because all of the serious tech companies who pay well will only hire people who have worked for 3-5 years at another tech company. So in order to get a good job in the IT space, you have to work yourself to death at a black company for 3 years first. Something I wish I had known before going to school.

wind peak
civic girder
#

and btw if your only goal rn is to just buy and own a car, get a cheap beater off marketplace lol. You can always work to having a nicer and more fun car later

civic girder
wind peak
#

Well yeah, I wanna OWN a car, key word own. The car I currently drive, I don't own, but I pay for the gas, insurance, and maintenance costs for with the meager money I get from flipping computers. So I'm not allowed to modify or tinker with it in any way. It's a 2005 ford focus

civic girder
#

I've been fortunate enough to have been in an area with a shit ton of IT jobs. A lot of shitty ones, but also a lot of government contracting jobs that pay pretty well and are seemingly a bit easier to get

#

I know a guy who literally just installs and repairs fiber optic cable. Gets paid pretty damn decently

wind peak
#

Yep, that's what my father does. Installed phone lines for 20 years, made the switch to fiber and is treated like an actual person now. I'm happy for him, if a bit envious.

#

timber oar
#

I'm pretty sure the state minimum is like 15 or 16 an hour here

#

civic girder
#

yeah I think our state minimum is the federal minimum lol

timber oar
#

Yeah no I'm in Colorado with all the Californians that whine about the minimum wage

civic girder
#

wind peak
#

Min. wage in my state is as mentioned, $7.25 which I'm pretty sure is the federal minimum. The highest paying job in my area is $22/hr for carting pallets of pepsi all over for 8 hours a day. I'd like to do that, it saves me the price of a gym membership, but for some reason they've made it super hard to even apply to work there lol. Every site to apply looks like malware waiting to happen.

civic girder
#

Could look at Amazon too. I've heard that it can suck, but iirc they actually pay dumb well

wind peak
#

Ok apologies but get ready for my novel

#

The 3.7 Duratec Cyclone V6 out of the 11-14 S197s is the cheapest engine in the long run out of the entire S197 lineup on account of it being the smallest engine, and the most fuel efficient available in that body style. It still makes 300 horse, matching the 4.6 three valve V8, without the insurance rates and the gas prices of an actual V8. I understand that the Coyote makes over 400 and gets marginally less gas mileage, with way higher insurance premiums, but in all honesty I don't have any use for that kind of power and I don't wanna be paying that much for something I don't 100% know I need / can appreciate. So for me, the 3.7 Cylone V6 makes more sense than the Coyote V8, I just wish the first thing everyone always says when they hear that wouldn't be "YoU sHoUlD gEt A cOyOtE aNyWaY"

wind peak
#

Knowing what my dad paid per month on his 96 V8 Thunderbird, and what I pay on my 4cyl as a dude who's <25, I guarantee engine size would make a difference on insurance. The thing is, my Focus gets such bad mileage cause of its age that pretty much any engine in the S197 lineup would get better fuel economy than it...

Trade in the Honda Insight

civic girder
stoic ledge
#

I mean with that many Toyota's

#

Who needs a daily

civic girder
#

I mean, I still regret not waiting for a Corolla Hybrid

#

tbh the Insight is disappointing

#

the winter fuel economy is trash

stoic ledge
#

laughs in European Corolla Hybrid Wagon

civic girder
#

and you get the 2L hybrid

stoic ledge
#

Yeah both 1.8 and 2.0

civic girder
#

I might get the new Prius Prime in a few years thoo

#

we'll see

#

gotta fix my poor RX-7 and pay off the Honda

#

Might hang onto the Honda for a while too bc car payment + mortgage = not a fun time

stoic ledge
#

Here, suffer

stoic ledge
#

Rather have that money available 😜

#

Instead of wrapped up in a more expensive way to get stuck in traffic jams

civic girder
#

Yeah. I had to drop my car payment back to the minimum bc it was just stretching too thin

#

paying it off 2 months early is not worth the immediate suffering

#

I am less disappointed in the summer tho

#

I got 72mpg on the way home from work

stoic ledge
civic girder
#

Since mid april I have only been filling it once a month

#

my shorter commute that avoids freeway is so much better for fuel economy, especially in the Honda

stoic ledge
#

I'm not really that bother with fuel economy on my car as the fuel is 1/3 the price of petrol... But it does currently like 35MPG

#

But yeah that'd be over 100MPG for comparable costs on petrol

civic girder
#

If I keep my Corolla long enough I kinda want to EV swap it for the meme

#

and bc itd be so cheap

stoic ledge
#

And it really depends on usage, 1 week I fill it up 3 times, but the next fuel tank lasts me 3 weeks KEKW

civic girder
#

cheaper than buying an EV, and a super cheap daily overall

#

I have hardly driven the vans this year due to fuel cost lol

#

both are sitting on empty with the fuel light on

stoic ledge
#

I actually want to see how far the mighty Corsa can go ... And then I probably take a company car KEKW

errant shore
#

Ev swap ur vans

civic girder
#

Someone has EV swapped a Previa before

#

but he did not share many details on it

stoic ledge
errant shore
#

Foesnt ford make a shitty ev van?

civic girder
#

EV swapping the 2wd van would actually be really sick tbh

errant shore
#

Or is that vw

stoic ledge
#

Many companies have an EV van

#

Including VW yes

errant shore
#

No but like a really bad one with shit range

stoic ledge
#

Here, the perfect one for @civic girder PogChomp

errant shore
#

Yes irs the vw one thats crap

stoic ledge
#

Maybe one of the earlier Crafter EV conversion

#

ID.Buzz range is alright

errant shore
stoic ledge
#

Oh that one yeah

#

But that's a converted bus yeah KEKW

#

Forgot about that one

errant shore
#

Who thought it was a good idea fr

#

And its n9t cheap either

stoic ledge
#

I mean we get parcels delivery here with electric Renault Masters, those have like a 80-90km range

#

Does the job

#

They also have electric Ford Transits now

errant shore
#

Does Toyota make a small van? Ik they have the quantum but im in the market for a smaller van

stoic ledge
#

E-Transit nowadays has up to 300km iirc which makes it way more usable

stoic ledge
#

Depends on your market

errant shore
#

Not electric tho

stoic ledge
#

Also "Toyota" as it's basically a Peugeot PogChomp

#

Also available with petrol and diesel

errant shore
#

Electric cars are a bad idea here unless you have solar

stoic ledge
#

1.2T petrol and 1.5 diesel

errant shore
#

Honestly the diesel looks like a good option

#

Thx

#

I was thinking of getting that small vw van but i have very little to say about vw

#

And ford doesnt sell a small transit in my area

stoic ledge
#

Which small Transit? They have multiple PogChomp

#

The new Transit Connect is a VW Caddy iirc btw

#

If you want a small van, the Kangoo Open Sesame is also fun when it's available in your country

bitter compass
#

F for the caddy
