I also took the weekend off to fix up my car got new shocks did oil change and deep cleaned it

halcyon grotto
#

the previous owner couldnt possibly have forked out the last 60 quid or something to replace the last tyre

charred depot
#

Used to not bother about tyres, dont really run super old ones anymore after a incident in my friends shonky escort.

#

You know a car is shite when you pass off the noises of a tyre coming apart as normal.

#

Sometimes i wonder if modded cars should be worth more because of the parts like a kw suspension ain't bad or cheap or less because some monkey worked on it

#

Why am i even looking at a lancer evo x

halcyon grotto
#

I'd say it depends on who did the mods

#

its a fairly substantial risk unless its some big proper company

charred depot
#

My 305 is probably worth less

#

most things id say is worth less modified

fathom socket
#

This thing so small

#

No wonder it sounds like it's farting

#

Banana for scale

#

Got an amp for the replacements?

#

Nah

#

I just need replace these 2 speakers to something that won't sound like coil banging on the magnet

#

And the "woofers" sound more like hearing loss simulator

#

And have no bass at all

pearl tiger
#

looks like 10cm speakers 😄 had those in my old seats dashboard 😄

fathom socket
#

Yeaaa I get that
Kinda regretting putting a sub in my car instead of just an amp powering the doors

pearl tiger
#

i mean, in my ibiza i got decent enough speakers. but i added subwoofer in trunk.. well now i dont have trunkspace tho

fathom socket
#

I honestly not a fan of soobwoofers

#

Car is not a cinema and I like good quality balanced bass

pearl tiger
#

im young and dumb

#

bass needs to be heavy

fathom socket
#

It needs to be nice, warm and deep

pearl tiger
#

maybe later i will use those tiny subs that go into the emergencywheel place

#

well im yeeting around 1200w RMS with peaks of 1800w into the trunk 😄

fathom socket
#

Don't burn the alternator

pearl tiger
#

alternator is fine

fathom socket
#

For me 80 watt system is just fine, as long as everything is balanced.

#

Ford i had had pretty good speakers

pearl tiger
#

My fiat had JLAudio door speakers with 50-60 watts rms i think

fathom socket
#

I don't even know what mine does

civic spoke
#

Just replacing the old factory speakers will do wonders.

#

Considering how cheap, and old they are.

Alltrough I wanna build my own head unit one time

Probably because they’re 70watt RMS speakers powered by the stock head unit KEKW

#

We do have that one. But it’s not really popular

misty mantle
#

#

Basically every 3rd car you see here in the states is either a F-series or Ranger

elfin stone
#

But the Ranger is mostly aimed at the Agriculture, Electricans etc

#

At least over here

#

It’s in the same shopping category as the Transit

misty mantle
#

Over here you have the people over-compensating, and then you have the people that actually use the truck for its intended purpose

elfin stone
#

And we can’t afford the gas guzzlers you guys have

elfin stone
#

For example, my car has a consumption of 35 mpg

#

That’s pretty decent for an engine that was designed around 2004

You're concerned with the leap in my logic?

charred depot

Atleast you admit its a leap

topaz vessel

It's my read.
There were indicators of aiming for particularly cheap mods.
The yellow fogs, which are also a meme.
And then the "yeah and?" response to a statement of wrong doing.
I'll conclude as I will from the evidence in front of me.

topaz vessel
#

No weekly updates.
And cost is probably out of your price range.

charred depot
#

You are right I probably wouldn't be willing to pay much when you clearly leap to judgements.

topaz vessel
#

Do you personally feel called out by what I said?
Is that the source for your response?

charred depot
#

You based a entire guys character on a few points, and my price range is and was £0 so.

topaz vessel
#

No, I based what I currently know of a person's character on a few points.
Just as you are likely doing now.

charred depot
#

I haven't made a judgement on you so much as a fact that you have leaped.

topaz vessel
#

Okay.

#

Well, these additional data points do not really change my opinion.
Rather affirm it.
But at the moment they're hearsay because I have not looked it up myself.

charred depot
#

Darkened tail lights might qualify.

#

But to be clear I was never defending the person just countering the holier than thou behaviour.

topaz vessel
#

If that's how you see it, okay.

charred depot
#

Back to cars here's some "illegal" towing for you to judge on.

topaz vessel
#

Is the connection rigid enough that the car doesn't hit the truck under braking?
Do the brake lights come on for the rear car when braking (if driving on larger roads, rather than smaller more lightly traveled one)?

charred depot
#

doesen't matter how safe it is its still illegal

topaz vessel
#

If you say so.

#

I mean, the first question is less one of safety and more one of risk of property damage to the car or truck being towed / doing the towing.

charred depot
#

its safe

#

The only legal use for them now is for recovering a broken down car and that breakdown must take place on a motorway.

topaz vessel
#

Apologies for my ignorance, but what qualifies as a "motorway" in the UK?
(I'll assume UK based on prior usage of the symbol for pounds as the currency.)

charred depot
#

fast multi lane road with a decent safety standard, only like 9 of in Scotland 1 near me.

topaz vessel
#

So the M# roads?

charred depot
#

yeah

#

places a car has to be recovered from promptly

#

We have A roads which could very well be motorways they just arent

topaz vessel
#

Interesting.
I would consider that much safer on a small personal estate, in a low traffic industrial area towing from one location to another.
Etc.
But, I don't know how common tow trucks are in the UK.
Also, definitely need to put any vehicle in neutral.
But since all four wheels are on the ground you do risk potential harm to the transmission and/or differential.
Do the motorways not have a car width shoulder? (I probably haven't spent time on UK roads since ~2010.)

charred depot
#

not always and even so the highways agency will expect you to be recovered prompty

topaz vessel
#

(The Japanese do not have shoulders, but they have very high standards for what qualifies as road worthy and stiff fines for violating those standards.)

charred depot
#

it wont damage it as its a manual

#

Flat towing is quite common with smart cars, fiat 500's etc behind big caravans.

topaz vessel
#

Oh, it can, depends on how the transmission and differentials are cooled.
Just because the car is in neutral it means the engine is disengaged from the transmission, but does not necessarily mean that the transmission is seeing the cooling it would during normal operation.
Highly depends on how the car is built.

#

And the transmission and differential do end up turning is these situations.

charred depot
#

Outside of AWD cant think of many manual cars which cant be flat towed.

topaz vessel
#

For example, this is a common thing you'll see in the US:

charred depot
#

not common here but you see it with smart cars and fiat 500's here

topaz vessel
#

But, people who are smart about it frequently disconnect the drive shafts from the transmission to reduce wear and tear on the transmission and diffs while flat towing.

#

To be fair, if you're only going a few miles, probably not the worst thing in the world.

#

But, if you're going many 10s or hundreds, which is not uncommon here, that's a lot of wear and tear.

charred depot
#

I know a guy who would A frame cars hundreds of miles

plucky violet
#

like 10% of the RVs i see do that shit

topaz vessel
#

And, while you say not many cars would be impacted, you are most likely correct.
Though, there are a number of more "performance" or high horsepower cars that may have an oil circulation system for the transmission or differential that relies on the car being on.

plucky violet
#

usually i see people with i forgot the name of but one half of the vehicle isn't on the road

charred depot
#

dolly's are illegal here too

#

Its hard to setup legally here as under EU law any "trailer" over 750kg requires a brake setup on all axles meeting trailer specs.

plucky violet
#

yeah that

#

its usually on a tow dolly with one half or the entire vehicle off the road on a trailer when i see it

topaz vessel
charred depot
#

on all axles the wheels of the car on the ground or on dolly wheels count

topaz vessel
plucky violet
#

my family just ignores it all together and uses a side by side instead

topaz vessel
#

Basically, any driven wheels should be off.
It puts wear and tear on the transmission and any differentials.
I prefer to be on a tow trailer or flat bed for my cars.

plucky violet
#

we've always driven stuff to location, i guess now the one car we wouldn't is the Lotus we got last year

topaz vessel
#

The other fun one is... you're still putting mileage on the bearings on the non-driven wheels, so there's that wear and tear as well.
Mileage is mileage.

The blog has a LOT more. But figured I'd show some pics.

plucky violet

needs to be entirely rebuilt because it was sitting, everything mechanical however was rebuilt beforehand so it just needs a flush/repainting

#

body needs to be taken apart, sandblasted and painted

topaz vessel
#

That's not too bad then.

plucky violet
#

so does frame

#

yep

topaz vessel
#

Okay, that's a bit more involved.

plucky violet
#

and to top it all off original owner rebuilt it with forged rotating assembly

topaz vessel
#

My old neighbor was doing that to one of his projects.

plucky violet

topaz vessel

(The down to frame and sandblasting.)

plucky violet

Sad for America that they didn't embrace the wonders of diesel cars : )

topaz vessel
topaz vessel

And so most of the auto makers did not want to make something that could meet our standards.

charred depot
#

you had vagshite at the same time diesels were being hard pushed here

topaz vessel
#

And... well VW supposedly cracked the code, but you know, Dieselgate...

charred depot
#

scandal happened here too

topaz vessel
#

I'm not value judging diesels, just explaining why they did not catch here.

#

Mainly it was due to diesel engine manufacturers not being able to meet the emissions requirements set out by the Clean Air Act (and EPA, which was more or less established with that bill, if I recall correctly).
And it was in order to clean up the US's terribly smogged cities.

charred depot
#

it's interesting especially with the love of muh pickup's

#

a petrol utility vehicle is sort of unthinkable here

topaz vessel
#

What US cities used to look like:

topaz vessel

Then there's all the size stuff and so on.

#

And all the loopholes were originally carved out so that the new laws would not dick over farmers...

#

But, as you may be able to tell, it's gone well beyond the intended purpose.

plucky violet
#

trucks irritate me

topaz vessel
#

Admittedly the "After" is on a good day.

plucky violet
#

they're sold at like a 70% upcost iirc compared to regular cars and most people who own them, own them because its "trendy"

#

which in turn, increases the upcost

topaz vessel
plucky violet
#

when i buy one its actually gonna be reasonable because of a fifth wheel and contracting, but most people really do not need them lol

halcyon grotto
#

what are they classed as again? Light van or something

topaz vessel
#

There was a study where something like 80% of owners don't use trucks or SUVs to their utility capbilities.
And it's still a minority of the 20% that do so regularly.

plucky violet
#

Yeah

#

my moms SUV is purely because of how big family is and the carrying capacity, it's capable of holding way more than the smaller chevy options were

halcyon grotto

yeah I totally wouldnt buy a car not suited to my needs based on the idea that maybe one day I'll need its full capability glances at V70

plucky violet

topaz vessel
plucky violet
#

SUVs are definitely nice to have

#

trucks are iffy because they are so significantly up priced because of people who rarely use them and when they do, a cheaper truck will do the required job

charred depot

proper tow vehicle

topaz vessel
#

SUVs are also up priced. By a lot.
The automakers tell us this in their annual reports about profit margins.

rugged mango
#

Now, if someone’s daily driving a f350 dually, yeah, that’s dumb, but an average pick up is no different than a car

plucky violet

i hate tacomas but they work

NBC News

Every year, many kids get hit and die when their parents can’t see them in their front blind zones. A senator wants to pass a law requiring safety features to prevent these accidents.

IIHS-HLDI crash testing and highway safety

SUVs, which make up an increasingly large share of the vehicle fleet, are more likely to kill pedestrians than cars. Fresh designs haven't changed that.

rugged mango
topaz vessel
#

Read.
It's literally about increased blind spots and how the size and where a car strikes a person is more likely to be lethal.

rugged mango
#

And again, a Nissan frontier isn’t exactly a “big truck” and a rav4 isn’t a “big suv”, like I said, extremely big ones are dumb, small ones are no different then a. Car

topaz vessel
#

Truck / SUV =/= Car

charred depot
#

real trucks spin out cars all the time, its just the nature of the beast.

#

especially common here due to the LHD trucks coming into the UK

#

not necessarily the drivers being bad but

plucky violet
#

cheaper trucks are almost always smaller

topaz vessel
rugged mango
#

Also most modern vehicles are getting sensors and cameras to prevent exactly what your describing, but people don’t like those because they’re an “up charge” that makes them more expensive

plucky violet
#

why would cameras or sensors matter for a head-on collision

#

your eyes still currently work better than any sensor for shit you can clearly see

rugged mango
#

Yes, but if your describing a “child hiding in a blind spot” then that’s what the sensors are for

plucky violet
#

your entire front end is a blind spot with alot of trucks

topaz vessel
#

You can be in all the denial you want about this, but the statistics and physics are not on your side when it comes to larger vehicles (i.e. trucks and SUVs) being more lethal than ever.
And essentially, all smaller cars have been bulking up and getting heavier and larger to compensate for the energy involved in vehicle on vehicle colisions.

#

Trucks and SUVs (not just the "big" ones) are increased profit centers for automakers and present increased risk to pretty well everyone else.

rugged mango
#

I’m sure it also has nothing to do with people who drive bigger vehicles are usually worse drivers and a lot of modern drivers are more distracted then ever

rugged mango
halcyon grotto
#

you want parents to put kids on a leash?

topaz vessel
charred depot
#

with how tall they are getting it doesent have to be a "child"

rugged mango
#

No I want them to tell them to not stand behind a card, and I want the car to not floor it out of a parking spot, neither of these are unreasonable

plucky violet
halcyon grotto
plucky violet
#

hood height definitely matters

halcyon grotto
#

couldnt possibly be because the cars have an inherit flaw could it

charred depot
#

the situation happens whether you like it or not.

topaz vessel
#

Period, full stop, SUVs and trucks, are more lethal to whatever they impact than cars.
When you control for everything but type of vehicle, the larger vehicle is more lethal.
So, what I took issue with @rugged mango is when you equated trucks to cars.
They're not the same.

charred depot
#

why bother with all these pedestrian safety improvements on car's when we could just tell pedestrians to pay attention

#

I drive metal bumpered tat from the 80's so dont exactly have much to stand on

rugged mango
charred depot
#

a camry weights what 1600kg vs a ranger like 2200kg

rugged mango
#

In fact, a Chrysler 300 is heavier than a rav4

topaz vessel
rugged mango
#

Then don’t bring up weight if your just going to throw it out

topaz vessel
#

Weight matters a lot in vehicle on vehicle impacts.
As things get heavier everything else need to bulk up to deal with the forces of impacts.
Weight does not necessarily have the same correlation for pedestrian impacts.

charred depot
#

if you look at the typical weight of a sedan and the typical weight of a pickup

#

obviously there will be outliers

plucky violet
#

your legs being hit and your entire lower and upper body is completely different in a collision

topaz vessel
plucky violet
#

legs being hit gives energy to transfer which makes your upper body slam on the hood of the car/ or just damage your legs, vs a truck hitting your entire body and just throwing you forward

#

way less chance for major damage to happen to you from a smaller vehicle

halcyon grotto
#

legs are also relatively non critical

topaz vessel
#

Trucks tend to have a lot of secondary impacts, like bumper to head.
Also, hitting the torso has a lot higher likelihood of spinal cord injury.

limber pine
#

Basically, the way Lucid built the motor for the Air is they included the differential on the engine output shaft before they do the reduction gears.
This greatly reduces the forces on the diff and let them use a much smaller design.
This is pretty neat, in my opinion.

i think i got hankook ventus prime 4

charred depot
#

I could do with slightly wider tyres but im not sure if I can live with the heavier steering

#

I prefer no power steering but it does have its limitations

stoic ledge
#

Really liked the Ventus Prime 3 I have on mine currently

#

Ventus 4 wasn't out yet by then

#

Would probably get those for next tires

#

But I'm not wasting 7+mm tires on my new rims

charred depot
#

problem aswell is I have so many 14" 175 / 185 tyres to burn through

stoic ledge

Atleast 10 years old?

Shit car. Then shit car with different wheels. Interesting kek

(nothing against it despite my comments, just imo worth saving money spent on wheels for a nicer vehicle in the long run)
