Amsterdam is basically a different country

#

Don't look at people, if you do they get angry

stoic ledge
feral reef
#

or say hi

stoic ledge
#

Also people calling NL Holland ๐Ÿคฎ

woven leaf
#

one wanders, do the dutch import soil to raise the land height when preparing a property for a house build

feral reef
#

Holland is the shit part willypog

stoic ledge
#

Heh no, GM is a master in destroying companies but they're still around, part of PSA -> Stellantis now

feral reef
#

We do not build hills just to put houses on them

woven leaf
#

like... is there a min sea level build rule or something .. since the sea level is rising all the time

stoic ledge
#

NL currently doesn't build houses at all KEKW

stoic ledge
#

tOo mUcH nItRoGeN pOlUtIoN

woven leaf
#

I see

#

I guess most ppl build boat houses these days ๐Ÿ˜Œ

stoic ledge
#

Really depends on the engine... OPC is nice tho xD

feral reef
#

There is an OPC zafira? haha

stoic ledge
#

2

#

Zafira A and Zafira B had an OPC version

#

2.0 Turbo

feral reef
#

All those areas are surrounded by dykes

stoic ledge
#

Zafira B OPC had the 2.0 Turbo of the Astra H, 241hp

#

There has also been an OPC version of the Meriva A lol

feral reef
#

The second one had a "sport" button

stoic ledge
#

1.6 Turbo PogChomp

#

180hp iirc

feral reef
#

So we had a Zafira A after that a B

#

The B was like a top spec

stoic ledge
#

Cosmo

feral reef
#

Yes

#

It has chrome trim on the windows and shit

stoic ledge
#

Oh yeah Cosmo's did have that

feral reef
#

it was black

#

So I actually looked it up recently

#

Lots of failed APKs ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Leaks and shit

#

As I said, shitbox

stoic ledge
#

Kek

#

Was it the 2.2?

#

If so, those weren't great

feral reef
#

Might have been

woven leaf
#

my 2019 S3 ๐Ÿ˜Œ I swear this thing does 0-100km in 4 seconds flat sometimes ๐Ÿ˜‹ great car

feral reef
#

That's not a Zafira ๐Ÿซต

stoic ledge
#

runs

woven leaf
#

well much prefer an audi than a bmw, way more reliable

#

performance difference is based on O2 in the air, temp, humidity, etc..

feral reef
#

hahahhahahha LIKE I SAID, SHITBOX

stoic ledge
# feral reef Might have been

1.6 was too small but reliable, 1.8 was acceptable in speed and quite reliable, 2.2 is quite a nice engine when it works but it can leak a bit... 2.0 Turbo (regular and OPC) is speed

stoic ledge
#

Improper repairs tho ๐Ÿค”

woven leaf
#

what was repaired?

#

guessing fuel lines lol

stoic ledge
#

Apparently the resistor pack of the interior fan

#

Yes they can fail, and is quite cheap to replace, even with genuine parts.... but some probably swapped them with cheap eBay units which failed

woven leaf
#

hmm

feral reef
#

It was probably the 2.2

#

Don't remember the license plate so can't look it up

#

I also don't remember how I got the license plate when I looked it up recently

woven leaf
#

in other words, buy OEM if it is an engine part or an electrical item.
If it is cosmetic, feel free to buy from ebay/amazon

stoic ledge
#

Basically

woven leaf
#

or buy directly from bosch/denso for a nice discount

#

most parts are made by those ODM's...

stoic ledge
#

I imported a part for my parents Opel from the US as it was waaay cheaper as to buy it from here

woven leaf
#

oil filter from mayback $200, Mercedes $50, Bosch $15
same exact part, different P/N brand lol

feral reef
stoic ledge
#

Part is made in Germany, shipped to the US, I ordered it there, shipped to Europe, for 1/6th of the price it costs here

stoic ledge
feral reef
#

Surprisingly dealer is often the cheapest place to get something

stoic ledge
#

Dealer was โ‚ฌ240

#

I got it for โ‚ฌ40

#

Including import fees, shipping fees and taxes

feral reef
#

ooof

#

wtf is the part

stoic ledge
#

EVAP purge valve

woven leaf
#

pfft dealers always add a 200% dealer tax

#

stealerships

stoic ledge
#

Well they didn't have it in stock so they also had to order it... wouldn't be surprised if, as they aren't part of GM anymore, GM charges ridiculous rates for the parts to get them

#

Ok no wait I also remembered a slightly different part number.... which was intended for the automatic version while we have the manual car

#

But I was like, it's a purge valve, it just opens and closes, why wouldn't it work? And in the US, the same purge valve was used in the same engine with a manual transmission

#

The slightly different part number in Europe was still like โ‚ฌ120, so basically half the original valve

#

But then I got it for โ‚ฌ40

#

Genuine GM ACDelco part with the Bosch valve

woven leaf
#

hmm

#

how can the auto have a different P/N to the manual, something isnt right there

#

its gotta be the same part ... surely

stoic ledge
#

Also stupid, I couldn't just buy the valve (which was just โ‚ฌ25 even in Europe) but you couldn't seperate it from the hose as they used a heat shrink

stoic ledge
#

Bosch valve number was also different

woven leaf
#

surprising, usually manufacturers prefer to create one part for multiple models to keep SKU costs down

#

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

stoic ledge
#

Ever so slightly different

#

But I was like... it's a valve which opens when it has power, and closes when the valve is off

#

Why would it not work?

woven leaf
#

looks more like a revision change than a model difference

stoic ledge
#

I have the parts manual/numbers, it's listed as a different component, lemme check

woven leaf
#

sounds like EVAP is emissions related. maybe that is why the specs are strict

stoic ledge
#

Ah no it was for engines with Start/Stop and Engines without Start/Stop, that's the distinguishing thing

#

My bad

woven leaf
#

ah ok

stoic ledge
#

But I remembered the manual US cars having the same part as the European Start/Stop engine while the US cars didn't have Start/Stop

#

Idk looked it up months ago xD

#

Maybe a slightly larger EVAP "reserve" for the Start/Stop engine for when it needs it on start up?

#

Idk

#

I've fitted it in April and it hasn't shown the code since so it seems to work ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Also I'm not a mechanic, just tried to fix it for my parents without getting charged stupid fees for something this simple

woven leaf
#

"pfft" wouldnt they just use the larger EVAP part for both models to save SKU costs?

#

"pfft" lol

stoic ledge
#

I have no idea lol

woven leaf
#

yeah strange, could just be a revision change

stoic ledge
#

In the US they only used one valve, in Europe they made it different KEKW

woven leaf
#

maybe they made the larger one later on but they still had stock of the previous revision and had to get rid of them

stoic ledge
#

Could be that later models also got the valve we have now... when our car was made the Start/Stop version wasn't available yet iirc

woven leaf
#

yeah maybe just a rev change

#

non-start/stop and start/stop models probably use the same part now

stoic ledge
#

Yeah so the Start/Stop version was available from Jan-2012, ours was made in Oct-2011 and registered Dec-2011

#

So you're probably right

woven leaf
#

yeah perhaps

#

good reason why to buy from a dealer, you can almost guarantee the part is correct

#

even if it is 2x - 3x more expensive than ebay

stoic ledge
#

Dealer didn't tell me it was a revisioned part xD

#

And they could still order they old part

#

But thanks to the parts catalogue I did find the other one, and ordered by that exact partsnumber from an GM Parts retailer

woven leaf
#

the new P/N should substitute the original P/N which is probably out of stock

#

helps to have the correct parts catalogue for your exact car ๐Ÿ˜Œ

stoic ledge
#

Idk usually the parts catalogue shows revisions if there is one

#

Atleast I've seen it a few times

#

But maybe they updated it wrong here?

#

I'm already glad it's a free version which has literally everything xD

woven leaf
#

errors can happen

stoic ledge
#

Exactly

woven leaf
#

ODM's can often miss drawings of various items in the Parts Diagram

#

Especially when a product is half done, the parts catalog is half done, a month later the guy forgets to update it...

#

Service providers download these documents and try to find parts that are missing in the diagram

#

Part numbers have no description, part locations are missing or incorrect

#

All you can do really is to report the issue to the ODM and ask that they fix it

#

They fix it and it's all good ... until the next model lol (rinse and repeat)

stoic ledge
#

I have no idea where I can report it KEKW Or maybe they did keep using the old part for the slim amount of non-S/S they probably made until it was discontinued, and you could only get the S/S-version

#

And it's basically a Rolls-Royce so a โ‚ฌ40 part to fix it is a win ๐Ÿ˜›

woven leaf
#

Well service centres would report those kind of things

#

but if it all works now, it's all good ๐Ÿ™‚

Got-ya

the MX-8 Mazda also has those

I dont know why they are called sui___ doors ... silly to name them that way IMO

feral reef

should call them drunken exit doors instead lol

feral reef

You can get lambo doors for an RX-8 ๐Ÿ‘€

woven leaf

umm lambo doors go upwards

#

RX-8 doors hinge in reverse

feral reef
woven leaf

oh... yeah u can get kits for various models

feral reef

Yeah but it's apparently quite common for the RX-8

stoic ledge

I think it was something like that

woven leaf

lolol ... omg I was considering getting lambo doors for my Civic ๐Ÿ˜น

feral reef
#

Lambo doors would make getting into my car easier, haha

stoic ledge
#

Also, different from the RX-8: the rear door can open without the front doors being open ๐Ÿ˜Ž

feral reef

if you google "RX8 doors". half of them have lambo doors

Okay same if I google my car, haha

google searches ... 2019 audi A3 lambo doors

low engine capacity VW engine cars seem decent. A 4cyl VW/Audi = not a bad purchase, unless it's ,an Audi 4cyl that has super-thin piston rings that drink 1 litre of oil every 3 days

wispy cloak

bitter compass
#

Ridiculous thing

woven leaf
#

I owned an Audi A5 (2011) and it would literally drink 1 litre of oil every days. The piston rings were designed too thin and would wear out. I was spending $18 a day to replenish the engine oil. This issue as fixed in 2012 models up

bitter compass
woven leaf
#

Moral of the story, every manufacturer had its bad models....

bitter compass
#

But there are pretty much 2 options for old ones: maintenance nightmare or it doesn't doe ever

woven leaf

A big engine BMW is a super wallet swamp

wispy cloak

I still don't have much use for them though

#

Not after working on a vw

woven leaf

yeah I get it, VW is no Toyota, but I would prefer an VW or Audi over a BMW any day

bitter compass
#

Honestly all 3 VW's i drive/drove absolute dreams in maintenance

bitter compass
wispy cloak
#

In my opinion mercedes is like gm, vag is like ford, and bmw is like mopar

#

The bmw comparison is definitely there because it has a cult like following even for cars that are complete piles of garbage

woven leaf
#

hmm

timber oar
#

All the plastic shit is a good place to start

#

Who has a plastic oil dipstick tube??

wispy cloak
#

Vag is like ford because they have a gazillion brands and have some really really good cars and really really bad cars

#

Then mercedes is like gm where they don't really make much that's horrendously shit but they still produce some garbage

woven leaf
#

There is a reason the "Car Wizard" on youtube sends all BMW's to a poor BMW expert

bitter compass
wispy cloak
#

I own an audi and that's enough for me

bitter compass
#

Like unimog

woven leaf
#

hmmmm

wispy cloak
#

After this I'm staying away from German cars unless I have money

bitter compass
#

But also their cars are weird

timber oar
#

And you see i kinda wanted like an old early 2000s audi 1.8 convertible

bitter compass
#

But i like unimog

timber oar
#

But the jetta my friend has is the same generation

#

And it all makes me want to vomit

wispy cloak
#

I buy mostly domestic stuff

#

Because parts are readily available and cheap

bitter compass
#

I wonder sometimes why so many people in the us hate on the jetta which is just a weird golf and europe is like yeah.. golf

timber oar
#

Well what classified as domestic for you

civic spoke
wispy cloak
#

American

#

Also they tend to be easier to work on

woven leaf
#

My thinking:
VW/Audi are like the toyota of europe, but not quite as reliable.
BMW are just trash, cheap engineering, expensive parts, difficult to service ... avoid at all costs. Especially with big engine models V8+.
Mercedes, ... stick with the smaller engines for reliability. Avoid V8's and larger.... but generally more reliable than BMW power trains.

wispy cloak
#

The alternator on the audi was a front end off job

timber oar
bitter compass
#

Oh i heard build quality in the us sucks but components?

timber oar
#

Components is a more general term here

#

But all the plastic shit like i said

#

Oil dipstick tube

#

Major parts of the cooling system

#

I don't remember what the parts were called

#

Fucking plastic sway bar links

wispy cloak
#

How

timber oar
#

The stuff in the engine bay got brittle af

wispy cloak
#

At that point just don't have a sway bar

woven leaf
#

omg...plastic fantastic

wispy cloak
#

I'm fine with a plastic interior

woven leaf
#

if a sway bar is plastic .... it better be fricken premium plastic lol

wispy cloak
#

But plastic mechanical stuff

#

Aren't there bmws with plastic charge pipes?

timber oar
#

The electrical connectors on everything are annoying when they are from 2003 and just got brittle and broke in the engine bay

wispy cloak
#

Electronics

timber oar
#

The oil dipstick tube just snapped from the slightest pressure

wispy cloak
#

No

#

Don't remind me of those

woven leaf
#

unfortunately cars today are designed to last their warranty ...

timber oar
#

Yeah sure let's put plastic, something sensitive to heat, right next to a giant chunk of metal that gets really hot

woven leaf
#

luckily they cannot use the same tactic on battery electric cars

timber oar
#

Great fuckin plan

woven leaf
#

yeah some ABS plastic pipe next to the exhaust ๐Ÿ˜ณ

wispy cloak
#

๐Ÿ™ˆ

#

It only took a few thousand dollars in ford specific tools to see one code

woven leaf
#

I'm gonna buy an electric car next time, and avoid all this mechanical plastic BS lol

wispy cloak
#

But then you have to deal with possible battery degradation

#

Or recalls

#

Like the volt had for example

timber oar
#

Just buy old shit

woven leaf
#

Either lease the battery, or choose an EV that gives you a 10 year battery warranty

timber oar
#

Sure you might have to rebuild an engine here and there or replace a few vital suspension components

#

But you can't go wrong with an old toyota

#

Or maybe and old Chevy or Ford

woven leaf
#

for an ICE vehicle, a 2000's Toyota or Honda is your best buy.

2000-2022

But still works and has good oil pressure for now

woven leaf
#

my 93 Honda Civic Si .. after 250 kilometres (155 miles) ... no major issues. I just needed a new distributor and spark plugs ๐Ÿ˜‹

... If you want a reliable 4 banger ... just get a Toyota or Honda

Thats that good shit from Japan that i like

Have a look at my car:

copper oyster
#

Can you just make up a VIN number in a way that it's reasonably difficult to go out of your way and confirm it?

#

Like dealer or something. If you make up a VIN number that makes sense for year, make, color, whatever else it is that's obvious to the DMV and such, can you actually do it? I'm assuming insider dealer or better yet manufacturer could have a series of VINs that ends production at a certain number. I'm remembering a year portion somebody pointed out to me

#

Is there like a make/exact unique sku-like retail-level/color portion which I'm assuming about and is the rest of the VIN determined by something along those lines with a remainder being just serial? If so, you should know a a VIN is unique if you know the last serial the same car contains.

#

Then how hard is it to change the VIN on the actual car? Isn't it tedious as hell?

wraith rivet
#

๐Ÿคจ

wispy cloak
#

It's impossible to change a vin

#

It's stamped into many locations on a vehicle

#

Including being programmed into the pcm

#

Vins have a checksum so that they cannot be created

#

Also with the amount of vin lookups it'd get found out immediately

#

Not to mention that you'd have to forge a title

#

Which is incredibly illegal

#

Along with the rest of it

copper oyster
#

Yeah that's why I was wondering about it. So basically San Andreas spray shop in real life has to be professional auto body shop and you have to etch out and replace more serials than a gun. Then, on top of that, there's no way to get a legit looking VIN in of itself.

#

So when a car is stolen, it stays stolen. But then again, your inspection usually has the guy check VIN. Or sometimes he asks as well. Then DMV takes paper's word for it. You need to create a history for it as well, true. That's basically the same step as making a new VIN I guess.

#

At this point it might be easier to fake your identity as owner lol

#

You also get title to house in addition to car wesmart

sinful creek
#

What?

copper oyster
#

It's impossible to make a stolen car legit

sinful creek
#

Essentially yeah, unless you find the original owner. Going through the process of forging a VIN and title is just so much work itโ€™s almost not worth it. Thereโ€™s some people who restore ancient cars but didnโ€™t have a vin/title so it can never be road legal

fathom socket
timber oar
#

But it's basically a bonded title for like 5 years and the owner of the actual title can come forward and claim the vehicle if they want it

sinful creek
#

True, most cases itโ€™s rare but can really bite you in the ass

wispy cloak
#

It can be done but it isn't worth it

#

You can swap vin plates under the windshield but it's incredibly illegal

#

I know guys that have done it on cars with lost titles before

Guys quick question, itโ€™s been like 6 month since I got my tires rotated and I assume the dealership torqued it over the Max limit. However, I want to practice changing a tire. Is it a bad idea to have 3 tires torqued higher than 1?

#

Iโ€™m just taking it ะพff, putting a spare on, then putting the original back, but at 76ft/lb like my manual says

civic spoke

And if you want to practice doing a tire change, then you can just remove the tire, and put it back on again. No need to put on the spare.

But still good to check that you have all equipment required for a tire change.

Oh

#

How much does it cost to obtain such a unit ๐Ÿ˜ณ

#

And what kind of taxes does the government demand for ownership of such a vehicle.

stoic ledge
#

I think it depends per country, but commercial vehicles aren't taxed that heavy usually

#

In ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ it depends on the amount of axles and the Euro-rating, Euro 6 is โ‚ฌ750-1250 per year

#

Euro 0 is โ‚ฌ1400-2400

#

Which isn't too bad if you consider a 1300kg diesel car is taxed at โ‚ฌ1400/year
