Well its around 10-14c here during the day. So warmer then then its usually is during late October. But according to the news the winter will be colder then the average winter here in Stockholm. Which is nice because that problem means that we will get some decent snow this winter.

misty mantle

Put it in the drain pan and let it sit for a minute. Then tip it a bit to one side and see if there are any shiny looking specs on the bottom.

Judging from the video, it sounds like rod knock.

I dont really wanna junk this car i just got it

You don't have to junk it.

misty mantle

Did the knock come along with it?

chilly dune
#

No it came now

#

I thought Volvos was relieable

misty mantle
#

Im sorry to say it, but you may have ran it low on oil without realizing it and destroyed the rod bearings

chilly dune
#

There was non when I reolaced The filter

misty mantle
#

Oh boy, Yeah, that confirms it

#

The engine is blown up

chilly dune
#

Rip or could i just replace The bearings

misty mantle
#

Sadly, since you ran her low on oil, the crank is probably damaged too

chilly dune
#

I have to take a look hope not becuse I dont have a engine lift

#

Its just to lift The oil pan right

misty mantle
#

You are better off having a shop do it

chilly dune
#

That could be pricy

misty mantle
#

Checking the crank and rod bearings isn't as simple as pulling the oil pan and a few bolts

chilly dune
#

Why is life so Hard on me everything breaks for me for some reasonlinuth

misty mantle
#

Yeah, I feel you

chilly dune
#

I really hope its just The bearings and not The shaft

misty mantle
#

Ok, was there any oil in it at all before hand?

chilly dune
#

Yes not 5 liters tho prob 3 liters or something left The oil drain is not so heavy

misty mantle
#

Ok, this motor may be salvageable

chilly dune
#

Good

#

Engines are cheap its The same for all early 2000s Volvos so its pleaty of parts if it would be gone

#

Just alot of work

misty mantle
#

and if you can get your hands on a torque wrench, shop manual for the car, basic hardware store socket set, a gasket set for the engine, and a bearing set for the engine, you could go through it and see what the extend of the damage is

#

And at least be able to replace the bearings if the crank isn't damaged

chilly dune
#

I dont have a garage i do it all on a parking lot

#

But some basic tools is posible

misty mantle
#

Stuff like reinstalling the head and reinstalling the bearing caps you have to have a torque wrench for

misty mantle
#

You don't want to damage it any more than it already is

chilly dune
#

Yeah

#

I wont drive it

brittle totem
#

His old ine was fine wkth just the top up during the service but this one most have oil leak or something. Last service was done around 20000km ago and it should last until the next service. But he has already filled it up 3 time already since last service at 30000km.

#

I think it's around 5 liters every fill up. Weird thing is his old passat with the same engine but 10hp less used way less oil.

#

My moms car has never complained about oil levels but the serivce period is every 15000km so I guess it's fine then.

Yeah he will ask at the next time it's at service. The car hasen't been perfect yet it has hade some werid issues.

#

The old one didn't have a singel issue in 3,5 years an 100000km that he hade it for. But the new one have hade 2 "major issues". First thing was that the Keyless system wouldn't start the car at all . When it was badically brand new. And it got some werid ecu problem this summer.

timber oar
#

Even then it's usually pretty fixable stuff

#

Yes if you aren't ready for it

#

Mine at least fish tails hard

#

You are basically driving as if you are drifting everywhere

#

Counter steering the fish tail tendency and metering the throttle

#

It happens more when you try to add power/increase speed

#

It breaks the rear end loose and that tries to overtake your front

#

If you are going at a constant speed and not making aggressive turns it's more stable

#

Yeah a 4x4 is pretty essential

#

but keep in mind

wraith rivet
#

it could be fun though ape

timber oar
#

That only helps you steer and get going in a more controlled fashion

#

Braking is still just as challenging

#

Good tires help but you can't get around the fact your traction is poor

#

So don't go getting in a 4x4 expecting it to be perfectly easy

fathom socket
#

It would be impossible to drive my FWD car without any chains where I live

#

you can get more weight on single axle

timber oar
#

Thats more for towing and payload capacity yeah

#

Since tires individually are rated for a maximum load

wraith rivet
#

and in theory more grip right?

timber oar
#

That just gives you four instead of two wheels increasing the load capacity of that axle

#

I'm not entirely sure on grip, since i know tire grip is more complicated than just surface area

#

But in theory yes I'd think

#

And before you ask no you can't just go slap more wheels on the back of your car and get more load capacity

#

The axle/frame/suspension has to be designed to take the load placed on it as much as the tires

#

Just lets you get around the load restriction for a single tire

fathom socket
#

if you're light

timber oar
#

Yeah that makes sense

fathom socket
#

A car cut me off and I could not brake at all

#

and I was carrying like 34 europallets

timber oar
#

This is very general info but, usually an engine with fewer cylinders will be less of a gas guzzler than one with more

fathom socket
#

generally you can make the same power with a 4 cylinder that an 8 cylinder has and consume like 20% or sless fuel

timber oar
#

You've got some wild new v6 engines that are in modern fords that put out as much or more power than my old giant v8s i have

#

Well

#

Uh

#

Its not that simple lol

fathom socket
#

I think could be more low end torque and more reiable

#

byt that I mean no turbo

#

but they have more parts and more expensive to maintain

timber oar
#

You have to look at so many different aspects of engine design to get an idea of what torque and horsepower it makes where in the rpm range

fathom socket
#

like my uncle got a Mercedes with a 4 cyl engine that makes ridiculus figure

#

honestly

#

you could play Automation

#

and mess around in sandbox mode

#

it's Basic, but gives general idea

#

well "basic" for real life

timber oar
#

I will say that at one point in time big displacement engines were very popular

fathom socket
#

and now they;re not because gas prices

timber oar
#

Like for example my old firebird came with a 6.6 liter v8 engine

#

Absolutely massive by the standards of average cars today

#

300ft/lb of peak torque at least

#

But 180hp max xD

#

Sub 10mpg iirc

#

Compared to the 5.3 liter ls engine I'm putting in its place that does almost 300hp stock

#

With better efficiency

#

Well think about how much is going on in a v12

#

Lord forbid you have a DOHC v12

#

Four camshafts as long as a straight six that all have to be precisely timed

#

So many moving parts

#

Me looking at this as not an engineer I'd say engines with smaller and fewer parts are usually more efficient

#

As you say it fights itself

#

Its losses from friction and the different crankshaft/piston imbalances, all of the bearings

#

How the cylinder heads flow fresh fuel/air as well as exhaust

#

There's just so many different little details that make it complicated

brittle totem
#

They are fine if you have proper winter tires as you should have if you going to drive in the snow with any type of car.

brittle totem
wraith rivet
#

when driving in snow would you lock your differential or keep it unlocked?

#

and would you ever go into low range mode?

timber oar

#

I have some weird issue

#

I break traction effortlessly on damp roads

#

My all seasons are a few years old but nowhere near too old

#

Plenty of tread as far as i can tell

#

Dunno what's going on

#

But it is an outlier

brittle totem
#

Of course we will in the feature when the emission regulations gets to strict for an v8 engine. And their is already an 3 cylinder hypercar right now the Koenigsegg Gemera.

timber oar
#

We even have 0 cylinder ones

brittle totem
lone fern

lone fern
#
