So my grandparents' neighbor has a broken down Miata in her garage. Turns out this neighbor is also the mother of my Dad's best friend from highschool, so when she gets rid of it, we'll be the first to be offered the chance to buy it. I have no idea what year or exact model/package it is, just that it's a manual with relatively low miles, and that only a week after buying it, it made a loud noise on the highway and stopped shifting, and had to be towed home where it's sat in a garage for years ever since. No clue what it would be worth without knowing exactly what's wrong with it, but I'm considering it because I've never really had a project car before I can work on to keep myself busy, so as long as it's a good price, I might just get it.

Well I can understand that, what I don't understand is why so many people are eager to spend $10000 on a miata that needs a new transmission, cracking paint and holes in the top cover, is over 20 years old, with over 200k miles, it's a pennsylvania car so the salt has heavily rusted the underside, and since they left it sitting in a garage for years without taking and of the fluids out there's possibly some rust going on in there as well, when there are significantly better options for less money and in better shape online. If she only wanted $500 for it or something crazy low like that I'd understand but she believes the car is worth just as much today as the day she bought it and nobody is trying to haggle with her. Hence my confusion.

#

I mean, the only reason I wanted it is because (as stupid as this sounds) I don't like buying cars that are for sale. As soon as I have to play pick-me with whoever else is looking at the car and basically fight someone else to get it, it becomes way less desirable. So I thought since it was so beat up and it belongs to a very socially isolated woman, I'd have a good chance at being the only one who even knew it existed or wanted it. But as soon as her son told us that there are actually a dozen people chomping at the bit to pay exorbitant prices for this car in particular, it made me think 1. what kind of treasure is hidden in the trunk, and 2. I really regret not having gone used car hunting with my dad when he invited me last month because the firebird he found and passed up on now sounds like an infinitely better buy

In Sweden they just changed it so if the car base price is over 700,000SEK you wont get that 70,000SEK back. So you can buy a car that is starting at like 699,990SEK and then add a lot of options and still get that money back. But they will probably change the rules in like a week again as always. But we will most likely switch government in September so the tax rules while probably be completely different then.

brittle totem
# stoic ledge Ngl if you can afford a car of 50+k you don't really need a grant tbh

Yeah if you can afford ice car that is over 50k but an ev is a bit of different story. Because they hold their value a lot better then ice car and the running cost is way lower to witch means that the total cost of owner ship will be way lower on ev so that the "government" is helping you with can make an ev more reasonable for more people to own a ev. But it all depends on how much you are driving to. One of my Friends dad got a Model y because it would be cheaper to own then keeping his 2014 Volvo v70 d4 that he hade before. But he drives like 40,000km a year to. And diesel is very expensive over here to.

charred depot

#

Ngl I wouldn't feel comfortable purchasing a BEV outright atm, I'd go for lease even tho I hate lease ๐Ÿ˜› But the future of EV's is still unknown in what both governments will do, but also future technologies (e.g. solid state batteries). Those will have a high impact on future resale prices

brittle totem
# stoic ledge Ngl I wouldn't feel comfortable purchasing a BEV outright atm, I'd go for lease ...

Yeah but choosing to purchasing a brand new "normal" ice car is probably the worst financially thing you can do right now because they depreciation will only get worse for each year. Yeah leasing is probably a good idea specially on the cars with a lower range like less then 300km. I think the best deal you could have done on ev here in Sweden was when mg zs ev came out and you could lease it for starting cost of 195$ a month for 10000km each year and for 15000km each year it was like 250$ a month which is such a great deal specially for 2nd car that you wont need as much range and fast charging.

stoic ledge
#

Hell, we usually purchase a "new" car when cars reach ~150k km, but both cars have exceeded that and we're not planning on changing them out any time soon. Even used cars are crazy expensive, and modern cars have gotten so good they basically still drive as new, and can probably double or triple their mileage. So we'll probably drive them until they can't anymore, or EV becomes a viable used option for us

brittle totem
#

The biggest problem thst i see with evs right now is for the People living in apartments in big cities thst doent have a parkeing garage or any place to ac charge the car during the night. For People living in regular houses that wont be a problem at all and over night charging is one of the best things with evs right now. Becuse you can always wake to a "fully" charged car so no time wasted at a gas station after work.

stoic ledge
#

Yeah but charging millions of cars overnight is also not viable for our infrastructure. Imho, it should be mandated by workplaces to provide chargers, so cars can be charged by excessive electricity generated by solar panels during the day

#

That will also result in many people in apartments not needing to charge "at home" as they can often perfectly commute a round trip + additional trips on a single charge

#

And, ofc, installing public charge which fine you of you stay too long KEKW

With that kind of car you can't even go drag day in most places as you have to get different license/permit and have certain safety modification if your car is too powerful, you either rent the whole track or build your own if you want to go anywhere near what it could do

Or go 60mph on highway behind the guy with a 2002 civic like everyone else if that is street legal

Sure people will fly pass you if they wish, but you just stick to 60 mhp, take your time to enjoy the miata because you aren't hurry A to B when you jump into it, you are riding it because you want to riding it.

after that, its all specialty places/stuff

charred depot

I like old forgotten peugeots but they are just so unsupported compared to german brands

dusk ocean

For a lot of my builds lately I am refurbing w/ OE parts, so getting a brakeline or fuel line means ordering thru the dealer who orders from germany

charred depot
#

Friend with his old W124 can get anything from mercedes

dusk ocean
#

yeah you can get most things for BMW if you go to BMW

maintenance stuff is obviously cheaper from 3rd party

Though it has started to get to the point where I needed the fuel pumps for my E30 and it was cheaper, for me, to retro fit a single in tank

charred depot
#

Had to make bushing moulds for the rear end of my poojo 305

french brands just generally arent great with supporting their classics

sadly theres neither for me heh

dusk ocean

Oh I fully understand

I drive E34s

E30 S50 swap with new circuitry in the gauge cluster to prevent it from draining the battery dead again as well as a 7000 RPM tach and a repaired odometer gear set as well as a 20 amp circuit and dedicated relay for the fuel pump retrofit while triggered off the ECU fuel pump output

I'm going to guess that "cheap", "electric" and "comma gold" aren't terms that go together?

Not a full scale car, but what do you think about the paint job?

Question: Are Nissan Altimas really that bad? People online keep on complaing aboht the CVT engine and whatnot and to avoid it in leu of the Accord or Camry

ornate viper
dense shard
#

Their CVTs were infamous for blowing up, and the engines were recalled for timing chain guides... so that was also a boom. Didn't help that Nissan would sell to people who didn't care to maintain their cars.

#

If you can wing an Accord or Camry you're more likely to have it long term.

#

Tho Accord has also moved to a CVT for the base engine so ymmv

#

Another decent choice imo would be the Ford Fusion.

pearl rock
#

@dense shard Don't american cars suck though? Or is that a bad stereotype that doesnt apply to ford fusions

dense shard
#

Ford Fusion has been around long enough at this point to have all the kinks worked out.

#

Do avoid the Focus and Fiesta. Specifically the automatics. The dual clutch transmissions might be worse than a Nissan CVT

#

Or you can get the spicy version with AWD and a higher power engine

pearl rock
#

What about Hatchbacks?

# ornate viper I remember debating it with a friend of mine, because I came to think of this id...

Is this actually a real Norwegian websites for electric cars for kids or is just a joke ?. And who decided that this was good website design to convince people to buy from them. https://arngren.net/

Also hydrogen battery are pretty promising, maybe eventually we still go to fuel gas, just not the same gas we used to use.

it's a problem because they paid me too little in my previous job and I need a car to get anything

You should have

the head went on that car

timber oar

Ooooh that's not good

You need that

fathom socket

that was inevitable.
no matter if I got a good one or dicided to fix the original one

#

I would have to redo valves on any of them

#

and LPG expired

timber oar
#

Yeah the worst I've had is maybe a starter or fuel pump here and there

#

On my old stuff

#

Nothing that bad

#

That's nuts

stoic ledge
#

But it drives normal otherwise? That's strange

fathom socket
stoic ledge
#

I have no idea how the head could contribute to that

fathom socket
#

apparently it might be that compression leaks in to cooling system

stoic ledge
#

Hmmm then a gasket would fix it I'd expect

fathom socket
#

I just hope at this point

#

if I find out the radiator was too small I'll be very mad

stoic ledge
#

Yeah I bet

#

Very stupid as the cooling system on those is quite simple iirc
