they couls reduce cost by making smaller batteries and simple exterior and interior

simple radio and AC

no fancy cruise control or gimmicks

this design is uh

#

i know what it looks like but can't name it off the head..

#

it looks like one of those older italian supercar shooting brakes

#

electric tho

#

now here's the stranger part.. it's weaker than it looks, 201 HP. but like, it also has a range of 1000 km

#

probably using something like the EQC battery pack in a better form.

#

would prolly pick the zpeng over this tho.. 425 HP dual motor to boot. might get the wing door version if you want it closer to this 😎

#

it has a 640 km range or something which is also respectable given the performance

stoic ledge
#

It has a similar sized battery as the EQE... but it's entirely different. Also lacks the batteries active liquid cooling system, it's just air cooled. Batteries chassis is made out of carbon fibre produced by the F1 division. The car's chassis also has an "organic" architecture with strategically located holes to improve strength and make it lighter

gas prices are wack in most places

#

which is why i started looking at EV SUVs

#

the mercedes looks more like a TVR or something than a C5 tbh

#

the og kona was good, but they don't bring that here anymore, only the lame 100kW version with limited range and power

#

XC40 recharge also, however prices ain't good down there much

#

leaves me with the asian counterparts, which are nice on infotainment, etc.. but not as nice on the drivetrains.

dawn glade
#

There's no 20 000$ ev yet so yeah ... not going to get ev anytime soon

fallen falcon
#

depends, second hand kona is close

#

and it's really good

#

besides at that point you're looking at premium cars.. with equally as premium fuel you should be using (additive added)

#

which will murder all savings done especially if you drive a lot

stoic ledge
dawn glade
fallen falcon
#

yeah that'll make things worse, obviously

#

but like, 20k cad car is obviously also worse than 20k USD car

#

that goes for ICE as well..

#

say you're buying an lexus IS, the former will be of much worse condition

#

granted that's one car that'll stand for the test of lifetime..

dawn glade
#

fallen falcon

it's not all that great tho

#

not to be too surprised since it's a VAG product lol

#

always gotta keep that diag cable..

dawn glade
#

I drive an accent ... not looking for luxury or big screen in the car ... I want the heater to have physical controls

fallen falcon
#

in that case, you can actually get some EVs that are on the lower segment

#

such as the bolt

dawn glade

Bolt is still 40k

fallen falcon
#

and even the older ones come with front parking sensors actually

#

i mean used market.

dawn glade

There's none near me

fallen falcon

actually that e-golf doesn't look too bad.

If you ever wondered what pristine Florida engineering looks like, this is it:

2009 Achenbach Engineering Cooler Scooter.

I have a friend who knows how to weld, and he made the chassis back then and put a .5 HP motor on it

I found it in his backyard and asked if I could fix it up,

So I put a 3 HP motor on it, put on a new umbrella, rewired the system to use 24 volts instead of 12 and touched up the rust all over it.

It does 36.2 miles an hour and the cooler is 100% functional.

Idk I thought I'd share something funny

lol... car manufacturing is harder than it seems. Kinda skeptical until they're actually building it.

Also, the surface area seems a bit too small for it to be efficient for solar charging from what I'm seeing. 70 miles of range per week? That's not enough. The average person drives like 15 miles per day.

tepid wing
#

That's silly.

#

You'll get much more efficiency from real panels on your house.

#

Dave recently made a video about this sort of thing, in ideal conditions it's not going to add much range a day.

hoary pine
#

The gain might not even as much as the weight of the panels would held back the car if you drive far enough in not so sunny days.

tepid wing
#

Any excess will also be thrown out instead of exported to the grid.

charred depot
dense shard
#

If you drive 15 a day on your commute. That's about 75 miles per 5 days. Honestly if your car can charge at 70 miles a week that's going to be freaking brilliant.

#

Imagine 90% of your daily commuting needs being met by solar.

stoic ledge
#

It's a great idea, receiving free power and adding additional range

#

Also, the range figures are average fkr Germany, in a more sunny climate it can so higher

#

Max additional range is roughly double

#

And it's not like it makes the car extremely expensive: solar panels aren't expensive at all, and the car is still being advertised for €30k (making it the cheapest EV after the Dacia Spring and Renault Twingo EV in Europe I think, maybe a 500e)

#

Also not extremely heavy, projected weight of 1730kg

#

Also, V2G so if you have a charger which supports it, the car can act as a buffer for your home and even deliver power generated by the solar panels

#

Also: great for right to repair, even providing it with a DIY repair manual PogChomp

fluid matrix
# dense shard 70 miles that you don't need to pay for per week.

So the big problem is that it will only save you maybe ~$5-$10 / week (at most). That’s how much it costs me to charge up.

The second problem is it uses WLTP range which is about ~80% accurate in real world conditions. So in reality, it most likely is lower than “70 miles” of range. So it’s range of 190 miles of WLTP is probably closer to 140 or even less.

Lastly, it is using LFP batteries, while they have come along way… I would like to see a tear down before I feel confident in their 3,000 charge cycle claim. That’s a massive claim. Most lithium batteries are claimed at like 1,000 if I recall correctly, which is a huge feat. Some now do 1,500+. But I’m not current on all numbers but I think I’m in the ball park.

#

Oh, that, $5-$10 per week was when I was driving about 15k miles per year. Now it is much less since moving and going remote. Now I pay like $2-$5 per week.

hoary pine
#

If they can get close to the claimed numbers without extra catch then maybe it would take off like rocket, but I really doubt.

fluid matrix
#

Yeah, just LFP batteries just got decently viable. WLTP is a terrible standard in my opinion. And even though I just did a Google search, they say it is 80-90% accurate and I don’t have high confidence. I’ve seen the low end of the market get worse, at 70% of stated range.

#

Makes me vastly skeptical of the solar panels. They have to have insane efficiencies but I wouldn’t put that on a car. Too risky to damage such good panels where you could just make money off the electricity then.

hoary pine
#

As a side note the claimed power and range aren't big to begin with too.

#

I would love to see cheap and low life-time emission EV become popular, so it will have my good wish, but I doubt it at the same time.

fluid matrix
#

Yeah. I’m not hyped for solar on cars. Let’s get it on our homes first. Electric cars do make sense for some people. Will take to the end of the decade to really be closer to 50% of sales. Hopefully more.

dense shard
#

Even then. Call it 50 miles of range. That's is still 50 miles of range you don't have to pay for.

fluid matrix
#

Again, it'd be wiser to throw those solar panels on a house and cheaper in the long run if you really want to talk about "money saved". That's the best.

I think LFP batteries just got good in terms of its life cycle, aka 2,500-7,500. There was a big break through recently since the other limiting factor was already a smaller capacity to hold a charge.

dense shard
#

You can put panels on houses or cars. Doesn't matter too much at this point.

hoary pine
#

It matters when the panels have mass.

Based on the WLTP figure and projected electricity generation per week, the panels should produce ~19-20kWh/week, ~1000kWh/year. That's not insignificant

#

So over the lifetime of a vehicle (15, 20 years?) saving 15kWh-20kWh and €9k-13.5k is quite worth
