I had a dream. The steam controller is officially $49.99

gilded quest

I'd love to be wrong

strange elk
#

NGL my next controller mightve been 8bitdo if they actually had any linux support

#

Forgot Aknes started selling adjustable tension sticks. Hadnt seen what they looked like till now

gilded quest
#

I tried an 8bitdo
It was fine. I'm not sure why it's so adored

#

Maybe just my personal ergonomic preferences, and ergo is highly subjective

#

I need to rewatch the LTT controller roundup

#

I think maybe it was gamesir? But there were a ton of options that sparked my interest

#

I just don't use a gamepad all that often

celest tangle
#

honestly xbox one and series controllers are just fine for me I am always at my pc so I always just use them corded not wireless so who cares if it even has batteries in it and the ergo is fine enough for how cheap they always are on black friday

#

I do use afirst gen 8bitdo light on some games mostly 2d platformers where I prefer the dpad on top insted of a thumbstick

strange elk

Gamesir, Gulikit and Flydigi are also contenders

strange elk
celest tangle

I have also liked powerA the few of them I have used I have a couple of usb gamecube contrllers I got for like $5 a piece I got on clearence

strange elk
#

PowerA is bottom of the barrel stuff usually IMO. GameStop little brother controllers (if I had one)

#

Could be wrong but that's how I see that brand

celest tangle
#

some of them aren't bad the gamecube contrllers I got mostly for emulation stuffs have lasted me like 9 years now I think

#

I got them right around the time the original nintendo switch came out

celest tangle

keen notch
#

Damn, really random patterns?

strange elk
#

I probably wouldn't mind a series controller. I used xbox one controllers from since the console came out until I got the dualsense, think a few months to a year after release. First X B1 controller lasted till the thubstick plastic gave up and they got all loose. Second one (cyberpunk) drifted within a month and the silver stick rubber got brittle and fell off.

#

Steam might be the last first party I buy directly from. I'll just repair others if I want them. They break out of box anyway lol

celest tangle
# keen notch Damn, really random patterns?

from using different color plastics in the molding machine it honestly is easier than making sure all the plastic pellets are exactlt the same shade of green or yellow or trying to mix them untill they are

#

some of the hydrolic hoses we make at my work turn out like that for a hose or 2 after using a new box of rubber just not to nearly that same amount of contrast

strange elk
#

Actually Xbox trigger haptics don't work in linux so I wouldn't get one until then, since dualsense does.

tepid sparrow

And UWP being ass

compact kayak

Think we all stopped being the admins of our PC's when MS started filling it full of data tracking slop

hazy parrot
#

Ngl windows and computer gui in general have always been like this. Ever since windows 7 computers gotten fast enough we artificially slow down the interface with animations and smooth scrolling.

Yeah the sudden spike of that just made people realize everything else bad about it

#

We would've been complacent for another decade if they didn't make such an offensive product to an end user

compact kayak
#

It was a fresh install this weekend as well. Did a bloat free ISO build, everything was great - one update (the one with the janky new start menu) and every utility app has a 1 second delay

#

Guessing its to do with replacing everything with Electron between the builds. Start menu doesnt bother me - removed that for FlowLauncher anyway

hazy parrot
#

Dude windows update, store install, even appx deployment services being disabled. Not even manual. Disabled.

Edge got back on my machine out of nowhere and took the browser default

what isn’t stable about win11?

hazy parrot
#

Ngl you break something enough times it's stable

#

Because you yourself become stable

#

With knowledge

compact kayak
#

Well stable on the UX front. I get hangs in different apps, freezes, taskbars that dissapear (though that seems to be finally fixed)

oak pier
#

literally never experienced any of that

compact kayak

Maybe on a single screen its fine - but I have a fair bit setup

hazy parrot
#

Oh you can easily break the shit out of gnome and kde anything really

#

When you are bad with self control

oak pier
compact kayak
#

Erm no

hazy parrot
#

When you have a good recovery system in place catastrophic system failure is something you get back to working in 15 minutes

#

At that point you know where to not touch

compact kayak
#

always run multi-monitors. Just windows that has always been poor at it. Like why now does it not even have simple settings to stop switching things around if you turn a monitor off

#

and then it doesnt even honour scaling correctly between monitors when it switches.

#

panel on the right is 4k but only 24" so I run it at a higher scale. Turn another monitor off and it goes back to scale 1.0

hazy parrot
#

This is more of a graphics driver deal than windows. Removing a display quite essentially has the driver reset

#

And this is not unique to windows

compact kayak
#

bet on a mac it is nice and slick

hazy parrot
#

Linux can mitigate this with absurd ass window rules scripting

That windows can also do just not very popular to install korembi

compact kayak
#

Right now with hardware costs - the appeal of building my own machines is pretty dead

hazy parrot
#

I would have expected the most popular laptop college students take would end up with absolutely nuts dev community

#

So many cool stuff and pretty interfaces the Mac people brew up. Not to mention the intermingling

compact kayak
#

also GPU's have peaked and just gone the software route, charging more for less

hazy parrot
#

Nah. It took years before we found out the best most efficient ways to have dead space 2 on the Xbox 360 still have the best lighting in gaming

#

We gotta let this new tech cook for consumers after the shareholders are done

#

Not saying it's a good thing. More like. We were locked on this course years and years ago

compact kayak
#

It wouldnt bother me if what I already had wasnt getting worse

hazy parrot
#

Worse in terms of being an enthusiast? Sure

compact kayak
#

Nah I mean in terms of performance - mostly because of the slop injected into every app going

hazy parrot
#

As a gamer. Unreal engine is finally correcting game development. Creative works can't succeed when they have 15 directors

#

We are gonna see some really good games and eventually they'll run really good too

compact kayak
#

Im a gamer but I dont take much notice, a lot of these companies are run by people who dont have much of a clue

hazy parrot
#

early adoption is never a smooth ride

compact kayak
#

but we're all early adopters now whether we like it or not, thats the problem

#

Like Windows - remember 10 (the last every version of windows!) Promised one update a year max that was it

#

Now its every couple of weeks, they roll out some update that borks something (or reinstalls edge 🤣)

hazy parrot
#

10 isn't any worse or better than 11. They both shipped the same service stacks in nearly tandem.

#

Outside of some marketable things 11 is essentially a skin

compact kayak
#

No I agree - thats why I moved to 11 pretty early (like the first week) I had to reformat anyway so was pointless sticking with 10

#

but early days in ten were fine

#

hell was even missing 8 this morning when I saw my new start menu. Was wishing I could get rid of the start button so I never had to see it again

hazy parrot
#

Idk how much of that was being complacent youth to jaded uncle today

#

Rose tinted glasses are nice to wear

#

Gave myself some serious malware the further I think back

compact kayak
#

nah Im not that bothered about things like that to be honest - 11 original start menu was fine, I barely use it - but then they had to inject categories into it or whatever else. This was stuff I literally built a custom iso for to avoid

hazy parrot
#

Now I strip defender out of my installs

compact kayak
#

defender that bad? I've never had a problem with it

#

(that I know of anyway)

hazy parrot
#

Oh you're talking about this latest build. You can actually make it a lot like the metro 10 start menu with favorites on top of an A-Z app list that's way better

hazy parrot
compact kayak
#

yeah but I had just spent a morning pinning some apps then the update came so I had pinned apps then categories. Its like just duplicating everything for the sake of it

#

I had it nice and clean, just a few apps, and the limited row at the bottom. It was fine

#

then they shove this underneath.

hazy parrot
#

I've stripped the start menu out of my workflow almost entirely. Task bar pins. And for niche stuff. Sordum EC Menu. Yup the same one from vista. Context menu entires

#

If you block bing search in the start menu search it's still very effective for finding programs

compact kayak
#

like seriously I rarely use it - I hit start and type and thats it. But when Im on the stylus its semi useful to have a few simple apps listed there. Not this big garbled mess

harsh quartz
#

whats with the massive banner

hazy parrot
compact kayak
#

I work as a designer/artist so kind of necessity 😂

hazy parrot
hazy parrot
compact kayak
#

To finish my middle aged rant on the start menu. Also categories - theyre just predefined - why can I not edit them? That was the point of folders just to have what you actually use on there. Then they make a list of giant folders you never asked for and cant remove

hazy parrot
#

You can. The label for the first 2 things you put together is like

#

Well it's like "NewTextDocument.txt" a placeholder

#

When this start menu came out in canary builds this was the case

#

Ever mess with flow launcher?

Ecmenu is essentially a wrapper for regedit to make any kind of entry to the right click menu you can think of. Nilesoft Shell is similar. But text file only

compact kayak
#

So I have that on a stylus click on whatever screen Im on

#

though got a bit carried away with the monitor snap layouts

hazy parrot
#

Are these just window snapping shortcuts or can you modify the regions

compact kayak
#

only to a couple more presets. There are a few more plugins you can use as well that offer more - but that's just elgatos

hazy parrot
#

Back to the original question. I'm assuming these tiles are overlayed from some kinda host service. If the process tree isnt something like 8 threaded tasks under svhost it's fine

compact kayak
#

I used to use the powertoys workspaces and fancy zones but the UI for switching that again is just so slow

hazy parrot
#

I've tried multiple times to fork fancy zones out of powertoys

#

It can't be done

compact kayak
#

is display fusion any good these days?

hazy parrot
#

Extremely bloated. But functionally equivalent. That is to say. It has its quirks

compact kayak
#

Not used it for years - but had a steam license. Used to mess things up a bit

hazy parrot
#

They tried so hard to justify the price by adding more lines to the feature list

compact kayak
#

was looking at wm glaze yesterday as well - but not sure how well that would work with heavier apps like photoshop or blender

hazy parrot
#

But ended up making it worse as a result

#

Familiar. And

compact kayak
#

sounds familiar 🤣

hazy parrot
#

They're novelties. Really. Windows window managers. Too many things like UAC prompts. Confirmation windows, file picker and protected from it

compact kayak
#

yeah - I had stardocks fences on my last install as well - but pretty sure that messed something up when I uninstalled

hazy parrot
#

Personally? Autohotkey script that lets you move and resize windows from anywhere in the window

#

Dude.

#

Everything we say

compact kayak
#

yeah I was going to get around to autohotkey but I couldnt get used to the coding and gave up 🤣

hazy parrot
#

Neither can I. But it's easy enough to read it and tell Claude when it doesn't work and what you expect

#

Yeah yeah I know

compact kayak
#

Think when I last looked it was between major versions as well and was conflicted as to what one I should be learning

hazy parrot
#

Ahk 1 and 2 being so polarized is

#

Wacky. Idk. I'm surprised though that out of all the same vibes were hitting you haven't let AI write you scripts

Nah I'm too old and bitter for AI

My neighbour has a giant telly as well next door - am I entitled to that too?

Did the data you passively contributed to the Internet over it's entire lifetime help them get a big tv?

hazy parrot
#

All it takes is a the European union to say a TOS isn't consent. And each person has the right to withdraw their data to kill it outright

#

But it's not happening because it's not a product yet. For voters anyway

#

If it keeps being as it is. That's probably the best we can ask for

compact kayak

Well if its anything like edge uninstalls, will be pretty lightweight in what water it holds 🤣

hazy parrot

You right about that

compact kayak

besides that anyway - its the other cost I originally meant & what it's going to do with the PC in general

Linux is gonna tsunami the consumerspace

compact kayak

The SteamDeck sold me on it

hazy parrot
#

"The peoples OS" is foundational to its existence and culture. Just a matter of time really

compact kayak
#

Also just to go back on it but AI is actually making the simple 💩 worse. I mean samsungs first AI update for OneUI - autocorrect has gone completely nuts, barely works half the time, then throws up random weird suggestions

hazy parrot
#

Yup. I def don't use it these pilot-but-hamfisted integrations

compact kayak
#

Figma's AI won't allow you to type hyphens in variable names because it's AI autocorrect just overrides it. I spend more time having to find workaround for most of the stuff it's needlessly added

The creatives have done so without this though - like compare $25 million on Henry Cavills moustache vs any one scene in Nolans Batman films

hazy parrot

Spawned a lot of self proclaimed developers selling products they had no intention of finishing

You can get all your crowdfunding by just releasing your game broken. Yeah the PR sucks but hey they probably don't do that till right before missing anyone's paycheck

Have you seen a recent synopsis on Ken Levine? (Bioshock)

harsh quartz

He wasnt a creative director, he was just an opportunist, everything was geared around the Kickstarter

harsh quartz

im still waiting for judas

hazy parrot

Tldr as irrational games grew he shouldered too many roles and failed as a leader

harsh quartz

makes sense, the scale of bioshock infinite was just way larger than the previous games, and was basically an entirely different game

compact kayak

still havent finished one of them 🤣

hazy parrot

A creative can't be a creative as a manager

harsh quartz
#

bioshock 1 is the best, 2 refines the gameplay but worse story IMO. Infinite is a fine standalone game but is not a bioshock game

harsh quartz

im hopeful for judas but reserved

hazy parrot
#

Hard to describe what makes Bioshock tense but

#

You get what I mean

harsh quartz
#

what made bioshock was rapture, and they left out rapture

compact kayak
#

Yeah but he had no plan past the kickstarter - just a list of features, no plan to actually develop any of them. It was a hungry target audience. Everything was geared around just getting a tech demo together with my UI and some of the sculptors models. We all disagreed with going to kickstarter because there was actually no game. Half his team left, he completely reset and shipped a 1.0 alpha and nothing after it.

hazy parrot
#

And an ending that made no sense

winged olive
hazy parrot
#

Like a Victorian era poem

harsh quartz
#

it was, it was "what if rapture was in the sky instead of underwater" and instead of the lack of social morality creating rules, it was basically just "what if racism never ended?" and i didnt like it

its fine standalone, but its not a bioshock

it was all a bit too deep for me to digest

But once you get on the street holy shit fentanyl addicts

compact kayak
#

the dispute was that we didnt think we should be taking any kickstarter money until we had at least some sort of game to showcase other than just assets. Thats a lot of faith to put in one person. He had no dev team afterwards so just contracted it out to someone else to create the alpha. Anyway turned out afterward he had also been involved with a guy who had done the same with another game in the dino genre.

Then he quit the scene completely and resurfaced running an e-sports team a couple of years later 🤣

dusky jacinth
#

Illiterate... Yesn't?

#

Well, he's not an advanced user or a fully understands hardware, but he gets basics and he knows how to build a pc himself.

compact kayak
#

Get him a SteamDeck 👍

hazy parrot
#

Back to the toddler approach. They need to be aware of a benefit that they will like

dusky jacinth
#

Give him a manual though of his motherboard with the kind of diagrams they have (which admittedly Asrock has a lot of blanks and a lot of pages to go through to find stuff, basically lacking enough detail in the correct sections), and he will not be able to figure things out himself.

hazy parrot
#

Because you've been there to spoonfeed to the desired outcome every time till now yes?

dusky jacinth
#

Not really either.
This stuff would happen in the spur of a moment and to get details for troubleshooting and such, it took both of us to go searching or ask around for assistance.

hazy parrot
#

With a precedent set. Yeah it's not gonna happen

compact kayak
#

Sounds like he needs to learn the joys of having to carefully apply a jumper switch

dusky jacinth
#

He ends up more frustrated than he started as, and usually he wants to be able to handle as much of it himself where possible.

#

So he isn't being spoonfed and I... Can't really do that much in that sense to be able to make it so if that was even attempted.

#

I don't build and rebuild systems that often and my knowledge is either sparse for certain details or leans heavily into another area he's not in.

compact kayak
#

I dont think you have to build them that often to pick up whats needed. I used to do a build every 3 years, now its more like 5 or 6, with the costs now probably be going on for 8 with this one. You just need to invest time into it all when it comes around

dusky jacinth
#

And when it comes to something UNIX flavored...

I haven't touched that much into the area, mostly because I just don't have a reason to actively engage it all the time? So I don't really provide much either. I just do what I can with whatever I can scrounge up.

compact kayak
#

Though saying that last time I got a prebuild because it was covid, and the only way I could get a 3090 🤣

dusky jacinth
#

My dad even figured out LibreOffice Calc faster than I could and that's just because I generally don't even rely on office app suites anyway, so I don't really look that much into them right away.

compact kayak
#

Still had to spend a good couple of weeks speccing it all up though

Anybody know of any good wifi extenders that have 2 Ethernet ports for an input and an output? I have a cable ran across the house for gaming PC but stuff like the smart tv and my phone load slow over WiFi, so I wanna use the cable I have ran to “power” the extender and then use the pass through to use with gaming pc

#

And Amazon is doing its obligatory “buy this one! No buy THIS one!” game

harsh quartz
#

i believe a tplink deco mesh works like that, not 100% sure. and most routers have a setting where you can switch it from router mode to bridge mode

#

mesh systems are cool but pricey, most routers that have a WAN port and lan ports can be set to bridge mode, and the WAN port turns into an upsteam lan port

austere shale
#

So you’re saying just get another cheap router and run it in a bridge mode? Or am I misunderstanding

harsh quartz
#

alternately, instead of passing through the extender, theres always the option of a dummy switch, just hook the switch into the line youve run, then run one to an extender and one to your pc.

harsh quartz

umbral jackal
# bitter kelp Will I bottle neck running 5070ti with a amd 3700x

Bottlenecks are entirely relative
What games?
What resolution?

For example, with AAA games at 4K, the 5070 Ti is more likely to be the bottleneck, whereas at 1080p, the 3700X is more likely to hold back the 5070 Ti
Some games are more GPU intensive, while others more CPU intensive, like Cyberpunk vs Cities Skylines II

#

If you're aiming for high framerate at 1080p, then your 3700X will probably be the bottleneck most of the time
Bottlenecks will always exist. If they didn't, we'd be getting infinite FPS at any settings
Something will always limit you, but the limiting factor will change per use-case

if by "the gov" , you mean the US government.. then the US government only controls what the US can do... and contrary to what many americans think.. the US is not the whole world

well no, but all that hardware will still cost significant sums of money

fossil frost

even if you get it from somewhere outside of the main sources, it'll still be also bought up for AI applications

#

also, you think the EU wont do much the same to keep their own AI/cloud datacenters alive?

#

they need a continual source of income to keep buying more hardware for more compute

#

EU has their own AI race going

"Is it really so far fetched to imagine that most people would most likely be "fine" with renting their full computing solutions from companies like Microsoft and Amazon? There's nothing wrong with it as an option, of course. But what if we end up not having a much of a choice in the coming years?"
this would require a lot of people to get a much faster internet connection

theres something different between having services hosted on the cloud and having the device that is supposed to render these services on the cloud

25G-PON is a Nokia only non-standard mode, but yeah still lol.
The next standard after XGS-PON/G.9807 (10Gb symmetric) is HS-PON/G.9804 (50Gb down, 50/25/12.5Gb up). I'd be happy even with just XGS-PON

why screw? the 8gb ones arent a disaster

#

my prediction is that 60 series if it happens will feature half less vram than 50 series because they want us to shift towards dlss and frame gen allowing us to utilise less vram

#

6060 will be 6gb, 6070 will be 8gb, 6080 will be 8gb and 6090 will be 16gb

they’re gonna be using 3GB GDDR7 modules- if anything they might just choose to lower the bitbus for 60 and 60ti in return

You wait. Nvidia is gonna soon say there is no money in consumer products and go only to pro and enterprise market. This is only the start

#

They are a greedy MF company

#

They'll just say there are still 2 GPU companies for the consumer end providing products, we don't need this hassle.

You wanna game, buy geforce now. They don't need to sell anything to the public

I’m currently running my MSI RTX 5080 Expert with PCIe Cables that came with the Corsair RM1000e (2023). The stock MSI 12V-2x6 / 12VHPWR adapter cable that came with the gpu is too short for proper routing in my case. Therefore, right now its connected with 3 separate PCIe 8-pin from PSU going to the MSI 12V-2x6 adapter, which isn’t ideal.

I’m looking for a 12V-2x6 (PCIe 5.1) 600W cable thats compatible with my PSU and GPU.

Would appreciate any help or recommendations 🙏

Or at the very least rely less on lumen and other features like that. Idk what MH Wilds did but since PC wasn't their target, it was this gen console they kinda didn't get their own expectations met since only recently did it become the case ps5 users broke PS4 counts
