Kinda dumb that in 2025 NVIDIA still can’t handle having two of their own GPUs in a laptop + eGPU setup.
Plug in an NVIDIA eGPU and the internal one just dies with a driver error (Code 31: Windows can’t load the drivers required for this device). AMD and Intel figured this out years ago — both GPUs can run together fine.

And now that Thunderbolt 5 is here with way more bandwidth, eGPUs actually make sense again.
NVIDIA really needs to fix this.

Holding back in what way? There are many different development APIs across a few different Operating System families. While a developer could (and in some cases, should) diversify their code, the reality is that anything designed to make money (either due to greed or simply because development costs money and people would like to eat) is usually going to be written for the platform with the highest market share for that given category of application. This includes games. Given this, I don't think Windows has specifically done anything to "hold back gaming" so much as I think it's currently the most logical Operating System for games at the moment based on a ~40-50 year history of how modern day computing came to be.
