Hey everyone, I’m working on an operating system called Thinrex.
It’s a security-focused, privacy-driven Linux OS built from the ground up for modern hardware.

Thinrex uses an Alpine-based core with a hardened kernel, AppArmor and Firejail sandboxing, plus virtualized application layers so every app runs in isolation for maximum security.

It supports Linux, Windows, and Android apps through Flatpak, Wine, and Waydroid — all contained in controlled environments.
Networking is privacy-centric with built-in Tor, VPN, and DNS protection.

The system runs on Wayland + Sway, includes a custom Calamares installer (CLI + GUI), and ships with the DuckDuckGo Browser as the default.

winged spire
#

Send me to the caves 😈😈😈😈

edgy sun
#

After which btw i still have service from another data center...

#

Which tbh idk but google gateways could already do that if the intended one is down

#

Somebody correct me if im wrong but google does this already dns level. Trying dig should be a good way to find out i think but I already know any google host name resolves to closest or best servers depending on where you are

edgy sun
#

But again, pretty sure the key is in resolving google.anything or youtube.com to a different gateway to services. DNS idk how but either any server that has this intentionally has records with multiple values tied to inevitably basically geoip. Because you physically need the exact one thing. A db of address masks covering 100% of public ip either as ranges perhaps CIDR mask, individual ip or a mix of both

#

Consider if you did anything with google's stuff from a non-public address like 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.x.x.x

shut lichen
#

how did a discussion about YouTube being down in a region turn into ramblings about how DNS load balancing might work

edgy sun
#

Unless you're them, they could easily irl call police because you so much as icmp request of some sort on that addy. If i were ddoser tbh i might try that on google because not getting caught (and swatted if traced back; only leaving scenario where they notice you with no real way to trace it back -- probably still remedy your DDoS attack but at least you dont get booked)... might actually make sense

#

If your load balancer sql server or some sht spams one of the nodes and crashes it... irl most wouldnt even consider attk at all

#

For some reason everybody would start at troubleshooting the LB. The expectation is somehow that a likely outcome of glitch is eliminated for any malicious activity to be finally considered

#

Which funny enough when i think about it is both objectively and mechanically easily the exact same one thing as DDoS...

vapid smelt
edgy sun
#

and nobody for some reason i feel would call it a DDoS... I'd say stupid hacker because they gained access to some part of a private service... but chose to crash something and immediately have the attack detectes

#

Like my sshd only listens on virtual vpn adapter and also only accepts connections from a subrange of those reserved blocks ipv4. Cause if i got any other address outside of range inbound on literally any protocol in general... tbh bug i guess...

#

or smart ddoser lol

sweet bison
grim saffron
edgy sun
#

fail2ban doesnt usually have mysqld jail for any spamming threshold of requests. It is assumed you fked up and crashed your server. Only wrong logins max. But logins you usually dont even allow from remote. Rule of thumb is never root but individual user has a public host if some service is elsewhere on internet for db...

#

Or you always just use tunnel interface which is virtual which now actually prevents ddos maybe

#

Your actual internet facing interface would still remain as a target. Your firewall can fall behind dropping or rejecting idk. Your mysql still breaks only ddos technically didnt target it.

Google... idk but a single data center wouldnt stop them any more beyond the point of somehow redirecting to another one. Again... DNS servers?

#

Who knows the ip of even their own service gateway? Not me. Everybody asks dns and ends up at some load balancers n gateway sht to something like http server. So if you DDoS dns servers, could that be the real target 2025? The dns is usually 'auto' which i think is equiv to gateway address. Or dhcp not sure. Regardless, it's just whatever dns server router uses. I dont remember but isp somehow default is immediately after your modem in tracert

grim saffron
# edgy sun Who knows the ip of even their own service gateway? Not me. Everybody asks dns a...

dns servers have been the target many times with various different ways of doing that (the most common one being straight up ddos and dns amplification). but it really depends what the attacker wants to achieve and who to disrupt. to make a dns attack actually effective and not just a nuisance, its not so easy. to target the domain itself, with protections like cloudflare infront, its very difficult to get a large enough botnet to make a dent for more than a couple minutes. a lot of the common problems are relatively easy to protect against

But tbh always port third but only because most protocols you type into browser to date are on top of tcp

#

And http/https are gracious enough to make use of all ports possible. And give the option to specify

edgy sun
#

To date, whenever you usually dont see :80 after http:// url or 443 is because browser assumes that given minimally valid uri, the port is 80 if protocol is http

#

And 443 for https

grim saffron
edgy sun
#

Beyond that, it assumes that uri is valid even without protocol (so a fully qualified domain at least)

#

Then it at least used to assume protocol http://

edgy sun
#

And entire internet had at least http on 80 listened for. Then https was actually way different because it really connected to http 80 on whichever server. Then server redirected to https:// of same domain

#

Thank god they figured out hyperlink being a url lol

grim saffron
# near mirage What are you trying to do?

skeet is saying you basically just need an IP, you dont need a hostname to access a website. which isnt true for almost every webserver on the web, as they typically serve multiple domains and need the hostname to know what to serve. at least you ALSO need to send a host header along with your request, which you cant when using the browser directly, unless you put the hostname into the address bar.

edgy sun
#

So meta refresh in head tells browser basically same thing as address bar entered and browsers did it before loading entire doc

edgy sun
#

Usually the second token is some kind of address.. but not ip or host or anything

#

Try file:///c/blah

near mirage
edgy sun
#

/c/blah is neither an ip or hostname

grim saffron
#

youre technically correct in many things you say, while completely missing the point on your wrong previous statement

edgy sun
grim saffron
edgy sun
#

Even on your same machine, you specify some loopback address

edgy sun
#

Because 'web pages' are only in response to http get or load from a webserver which connects over network

grim saffron
#

you can try ip addr usually even in fkn chrome if the host name doesnt resolve lol
im saying this statement here isnt making sense. if i know the address of, lets say, lttstore.com, and that resolves to 23.227.38.36 for example, you can put https://23.227.38.36 in your browser and it WILL NOT show the website, because you lack the hostname. the webserver doesnt know what to do

#

this is very basic stuff

#

you can send a request with curl to that and add a host header to the request. thatll work. you can add the ip and hostname to your /etc/hosts and then use the hostname in your browser again. thatll work too. but what you described would not for almost any webserver out there.

near mirage
grim belfry
grim saffron
edgy sun
#

On top of that, the transport layer i think is always presumed to be TCP. But, again, the port is different because 80 or 443 are always there. Just that url is valid in chrome because protocol is always there or not. Certain protocol like http, https and ftp need 3rd token (short int port) because the address directs to tcp endpoint. But the 3rd token is honestly usually omitted in practice besides being permitted

grim saffron
#

so every VM has its own port and you just access it through the port then? otherwise youd need a reverse proxy

edgy sun
#

And every browser just defaults to 80 443 n sht cause its standard

edgy sun
#

Demonstrations:

You can't have http and https configured in any web server (httpd) to be the same. Why?

You can end up searching the input for address bar in browser default search engine. What does that mean? Hint: see the aforementioned clause about how browser assumes you minimally entered second token as valid hostname

#

Reversely, pay attention to things like even Windows or way before in DOS days from like FAT6.9 to NTFS whatever not allowing certain chars anywhere in name or path

grim saffron
#

that has absolutely nothing to do with what i just said

near mirage
edgy sun
#

Perhaps : in file or folder name would conflict with the very thing that terminates it as one address (which is the path in that case) when trying to load in browser using file://

edgy sun
#

https is ssl connection with cert first. Then inside it the same old http protocol is encrypted

grim saffron

edgy sun

But max you end up with mvc root and api/v3/ inside lol. Not sure but you gotta manually write 'transformers' for request or some sht. Just that boot mvc hits it first always. And rest api will never show css or even a single html element in the first place a lot of cases. Max header says body is text/json and the api returns json in body. Browser usually shows the json as plain text. Json can be a markup just like xml or html probably but web page seems to imply it's at least xml maybe with certain tags that are <a> and such. I havent tried xml recently tbh cause i think youre max meant to use xhtml. You can lie about it and say the document is html or xhtml with the latter probably beinh the most likely to validate or not the same as your xml. Funny how I neither care nor would be surprised if chrome or ff today wouldnt render elements if i specify xml. It would legit be potentially 100% valid xhtml or whatever but browsers just 'dont show a webpage' on purpose. Makes sense. Also not sure if apache would even read head and body tag outside of html parser

Which tbh has to stop because html5 'breaks' if you do certain pre-existing things like close select tags. I think img is at least warning if (html document in all cases) specified version 5. Xhtml would require you to close it always along with any <tag> because it aimed to be html variant that is valid xml again. So i would always have the next closing tag be /img or any count of opens followed by that same count of closes in reverse order until finally </img>. All tags in xml close or else it's invalid. Xhtml would uniquely have one additional option of <img /> or <img/> idk if space matters. But all htmls without x in front including html5 should give actual parser error when validation occurs.

Web pages are not allowed to open and close a tag at once lmfao. You can and probably did encounter it but with 0 awareness. Browser still even rendered img element. SAX would not even continue to parse at that point and Java would have an exception thrown. So any object representing easily the next 'website' you visit wouldnt be returned and even code wouldnt run... it would throw a typical object eventually extending Exception or that very class.

So if parse xml, how come certain things are written to not even finish it at first invalid thing.. and then like dump or mark immediate garb collection on what was done so far... which can be valid if the problem occurred at root of 'document'? Anywhere else would mean the parent tag hasnt closed ever...

So I can still have valid xml or perhaps some tags already closed at root? Xml and html both have this docroot which tbh never closes until the end of tree. Makes sense xml document interfaces in any language can't return anything except nil pointer if possible. I didnt finish validating and parsing it until it closes

DOM on the other hand is popular if you want any shot at node or document to still be returned if theres a single error inside. Web pages happen to be to date implemented as 'dom trees'. The root you can actually access in javascript which refers to entire thing as document. But web page can have things like iframes inside of it.

So the same server? Nope. Same protocol? Nope. Same even meta content in header? No! For https it's a problem if the protocol in url is http... or tbh anything plaintext? Because a user entered https address but some 'content' is downloaded again without encrypting it. I think it might actually show cert error inside iframe tho lol

I think naturally something about white space has a higher likelihood of appearing... that is unless your body or html elements have backgrounds. Then it's whatever those backgrounds show. My geeking is over how why is it that html5 being an official standard is specified by meta doc type

#

Inside of... html doc because apache was set to treat file ext as such

gritty zodiac
#

Will there be I bottle neck if I pair my i5 6500 with the gtx 1650, I also have a 280 watt psu if that matters

edgy sun
#

But irl google gives everybody invalid html5 and probably the rest if you were to have any other html ver in that header tag. Some basic things like head and body obviously valid because any web server needs them correctly placed in outer html tag. Outer html tag idk but both browser and web server dont need in order to do that thing im talking about... which is to still serve you the document up to that point and even the rest.

The html extension still puts text/html or some sht for content type in header when webserver responds to your http get wherever and IF ever you ended up reaching it from that 'url' i was ranting about

grim saffron
#

alright, i give up. skeet is just completely in his own world

edgy sun
#

Goes to show you actually never know or influence what your very own browser tries to do with the content of anything beginning with http(s)... where the s is external to this phenomenon

#

Is that not important? I wouldnt be surprised if more than half people reading this rn are literally just now finding out that i can craft a 'page' ending with .html that won't even display in chrome when you click it. Instead it will download to... idk most ppl downloads folder

#

And it will happen on its own because default is save to downloads in user dir

grim saffron
grim saffron

So idk kinda important to know that any url with certain protocols decides that the rest (address somebody called it of the network variety... I guess) can always be exe for win 7+ since thats what most people have

So there are many orgs non profits even which existed before google even. You go to it and report an ip address. Some lists can be aggregated into crap like chrome or FF. So whenever you click a link or any hyperlink tells browser to gef/load from an 'address', it would at least resolve to what? What somebody claimed doesnt need to be in all http and https uri or url

Which true by design ip exactly can be replaced by hostname... but if i was wannacry guy post attack my apache webserver where they found earliest dropper whilst botting... for the greater good though

#

Yeah definitly until whenever interpol busts down door to apt where that i[

#

ip address is registered with some telecom.. banned

#

Here i can show you just how truly ip is uniform to http for just one example... because i can make any domains i want but the ip address would have ff stop sign for all multiple sites on that server. So the https and aforementioned 'sert bot' do nothing at all. At most you might cover up the malicious site warning? Wait no because resolver already happened

obsidian horizon
#

blud is talking to himself

edgy sun
#

So tbh ip ban is pretty cool because it seems browsers dont even care about getting cert. Tbh they dont even initiate ssl connection of any kind. http and https here dont have a chance to begin playing any role as one being somehow not the other

grim saffron
obsidian horizon
edgy sun
#

But, again, protocol tells browser that second token must be some address reflecting an endpoint on network. So the browser actually was the only one that had any code which ran that had deterministic outcome influenced by just first part of 'address'

edgy sun
alpine gale
# vapid smelt One fun fact about the 2000 Honda Accord is that it was the first gasoline-power...

Right? Another fact I really like is that Samuel Parker, a coppersmith from Middlesex, England was granted a patent on January 11, 1833, for a tabletop machine which used a brewing method that sends self-pressurized hot water from a sealed vessel vertically through a bed of packed coffee grounds into a collector, as an improvement on the coffee percolator. This was known as one of the first / early "Moka" pots.

edgy sun
#

Tbh hybrid is pog because you def save a lot of gas... plus that thing where it stops running in park or brake

#

Does avg idle time for cars go into mpg? No right

#

But if it did, the starter thing on its own on throttle (?) maybe did some serious cuts to emissions. And the consumer benefits 100% from fuel efficiency.

Tesla is 0mpg I guess which makes you think of energy still easily used that had same problem basically. If everyone got a tesla in a country that only still burns coal... is that better?

#

Like i feel now i have evidence so impossible to refute that a scam is going on if taxes are added on tesla because greenhouse gaslit everyone

#

Which implies we will cause a lot of global warming thats actually posing existential threat. A lot of times ppl seem to imply its an ice age. I believe all that. Global warming exists and we're polluting atmosphere to probably extent of causing never before occuring meltdown that accelerates the next ice age to some crazy outlier gap of time between two ice ages.

#

Maybe even first ice age to the very last one never happened close enough to even once be on order of 1000 as the one we can cause.

Tbh we should have enough nukes to melt everything and... idk. Ice age maybe or fire age. Fire age I always say is an overlooked scarier possibility

And how manufacturers advertise storage and in reality what the storage is.

#

Why can't they just have 1TB be 1TB?

#

Or at least advertise it as a 931GB drive. Obviously that will never happen.

Not Windows, and Linux does use GiB

Advertised drive space being represented in different measurement units in NOT, by definition, a scam, but okay. I get what you mean and I'm in full agreement that marketing should lineup across all products / software, but... It's not a scam - it's more of a misrepresentation of capacities based on how each OS / software chooses to display said capacities.

#

It's very much similar to how router manufacturers claim "AC3000 speeds!" without clearly denoting that those 3000mbps speeds are across all frequency bands broadcast by the router's antennas at the same time, which few if any single devices can actually utilize. (And this assumes the CPU in the router is even capable of handling that much traffic. 🤣)
