If I may suggest Linux Mint, it's been pretty painless to get going. Just make sure you keep ChatGPT handy for troubleshooting.

Dual boot with a windows partition, and just make sure you know how you want to store your steam games.

I kept my steam library on an NTFS drive mounted in Linux and it requires a fix when you run each game the first time

in my experience tiny fittings dont hold up particularly well with 3d prints, as they creep under load / repeated use. you might need an insert for it. in my experience M5 is about the smallest thread you can get away with if the load isnt too bad. everything else just wears out in no time

if you can make it not leak (possibly with an o-ring at the end?) im pretty sure it should last a session. but for repeated use, as aquatic said, heatset inserts are the way to go. also for any other type of thread you need that sees somewhat repeated use or consistent load.

for just putting parts together you only intend to take apart for repair, when there isnt too much load and with the thread being M5 or larger, you can absolutely get away with 3d printed threads

i designed and built myself a motorised camera slider, its mostly M6 screws and no heatset inserts at all, just printed threads. the 1" square metal tubes have threads cut in them, thats the only real thread. strength wise its perfectly fine

combined it with some ball bearings for smooth operation and it works fantastic. i reprinted the parts that attach to the sled with the ball bearings 2 or 3 times to get the tolerances right

gotta say, 3d printing is magical. i wouldve never been able to build something like that before 3d printing. its a like a cheat code :D

they're not screws. Once I've got the other side done for the air compressor, I'll print the final product in ABS with 100% infill and make the walls a big thicker. I'll use some pipe tape as well to fill in any gaps.

this was just a prototype to get the threading right. The final product will connect this airbrush to a 1/4" IM shop compressor hose

you dont need 100% infill, not even close. just thicker walls. and potentially vase mode if you cant get it sealed, but that might not be necessary

i dont think the stresses you have are going to be any issue for ASA

i used a 30% infill PLA adapter for a 250W motor to attach the sprocket to an axle. the M6 screw through the PLA piece into the steel axle was what broke, not the plastic. we commonly underestimate the strength of these prints, and ASA is far stronger than PLA :)

resolve is pretty decent. it has its downsides compared to premiere, but its pretty great in most regards and does have linux support (with some caveats, but overall runs great). there are decent alternatives for PARTS of photoshop, but nothing that properly replaces it on linux, even if youre happy to pay for them. i heard natron is a pretty decent alternative for after effects, but i dont know to which extent. blender can also be partially a replacement, but definitely is not a complete after effects replacement (its just a product with a vastly different focus)
