I wish more cases had optical drive bays, with the re-rise of physical media and the new need to archive a ton of older games/movies/music that is rotting away it seems like a great retro feature to include (and maybe entice more people to want physical media). I mean the Plex/home server community is growing pretty rapidly, and for a lot of people I can see using a cheaply manufactured external drive would be annoyed with the quality issues with the frequency that they rip their media. A lot of people, especially with every price increase the streamers force on us, are turning to collecting physical media and archiving it so they can have the convenience of streaming it with the peace of mind that the physical version still exists if needed

there is no "quality issues" with a drive when you rip media, it either reads it and if there are issues, the error correction kicks in, or it doesnt, and it fails... and optical media is a solved problem, has been for a LONG time... even the cheapest of cheap drives now, are better than the expensive drives from 20 years ago

i can say this having ripped 1000s of CDs, and 100s of DVDs and 100s of blurays... and also running a small side business ripping VHS to digital, so having ripped 100s of VHS tapes too

It’s not about the ripping, it’s about the manufacturing of the devices. I’ve used several and have had them not open all the way, not open at all, and they can be so light that they could be jostled and potentially damage the disc
