So I never said that certifications don't count or don't matter, I'm saying they're not the end-all-be-all of this job. Many certification programs (such as WISE) are basically never followed up on and are there to make a shop look legitimate without actually having to do anything. Many "official" shops like Asurion will hire a bunch of unqualified college kids and just get them to tick a few boxes to stay in the program.

OEM training is rarely required for anything as simple as a phone, and anyone telling you that you must have OEM training either is just misinformed or is intentionally misinforming you (i.e. Apple themselves). Many of the best and most well-known techs in the industry (see: Louis Rossmann, Jessa Jones) are entirely self-taught. That doesn't mean someone who is self-taught can't be bad (they can, and often are).

That being said, who you want to trust to repair your phone is entirely up to you. I have no problem with people wanting to get their phone repaired with OEM parts, or at an OEM-certified center, that's their prerogative.

I do, however, have an issue when people make categorical statements and personal attacks based around these qualifications. I've had people telling me that I shouldn't be working on customer devices because I don't know what I'm doing for the last hour, and meanwhile I've completed an iPhone 14 Pro Max charge port, an iPhone 13 Pro Max screen, and a Samsung S21 Plus screen. This is also why I kept "bringing it back up after a few minutes" because I'm busy working and messaging when I get a moment's break.

Overall, it seems like these folks either don't know what their argument is or are just trying to get on my nerves. To that end they've succeeded.

Aha, if the old CD still worked, then I'd say it's however the new CD's are being burned, but since it's throwing an error trying to read the old CD now, that screams the radio's CD player is the problem. CD drive lasers do eventually wear out with age; they can become too weak to read burned CD's over time, and eventually pressed CD's too.
