till today, nvidia still doesn't support vaapi, the universal API for video dec/enc on linux.
this is especially a problem for browsers
cause browsers have to write video playback and encoding with sandboxing in minds.
So supporting multiple video APIs is not on their list, browsers just wanna support the universal stuff on a given platform.

The community has made a vaapi translation layer over nvdec, this means video decode/playback is covered, encode is not, so you won't be gpu encoding on discord with nvidia any time soon.
Even then, to get the playback to work on browsers require poking holes on the browser's sandbox, so you get less security

So at my home office, I sometimes need to set up a laptop at my desk where my Mac mini lives. When I do this I have to move my Logitech dongle over and swap hdmi input on the monitor. I believe what I need is a kvm switch, but most of what I see is $$$, ugly or overkill. One monitor, a few USB ports is all I need.

Tbh, hot take incoming. I think computers (especially newer ones) being harder to afford is a good thing. It means people are gonna have to use older hardware for longer, which I think will have an impact on the games industry making them have to polish and optimize their games more instead of just relying on newer computing horsepower to make them run “acceptable”
