VHS "hack" for younger people wanting to put modern video to VHS to then digitize for that VHS filter

To put widescreen 16:9 video on VHS, take that video file and convert it with VLC. Under the video settings of your chosen other settings, set the resolution to 480p, I use 720x480 but 640x480 also works

VLC will squish the video inward, it won't crop it
Record that now 4:3 video file to VHS.
On a TV you can set your picture mode to stretch, this will stretch the video back out to a proper widescreen. You could also do this in post
