Channel bloat is a legit concern as it is more difficult to moderate so expanding the networking channel to enterprise hardware in a home setting (homelab) would provide somewhere to discuss the topic without adding another channel to moderate.
Though personally, I think homelab as a new channel is a reasonable addition since networking could also include 'what is the best wifi 7 router' and that persons eyes might glaze over if people are talking about SAS backplanes, DAC vs AOC, ect.

It will probably work to simply move the drive so long as it is not bitlocker encrypted as modern windows is pretty good about going oopsies this isn't working let me set up for new hardware - but leaving behind all the old stuff may result in lower performance, issues with stability now or even in the future when windows updates like from 23h2 to 24h2, ect. Thus why I always recommend just do a fresh install. Even on the same hardware you'll notice the machine is usually snappier after a fresh install.

The friend that got me into PC building back when CPUs were still all single core had his drive encypted by bitlocker without his knowledge and thus lost all his data when he accidentally deleted the wrong partition.

The problme for me its not VRAM itself. You can Manage with optimised Settings. But for me its the thought of getting a 500$ Card and not be able to set Everything to Ultra. What do i pay 500$ for then? Just for NVIDIA to put not enough VRAM on its Card? And its an ongoing Problem since.. oh at least the 1060 3GB.

Meanwhile a 7800XT is Cheaper, faster and has more VRAM (16GB). So if oyure not playing one of the 7 Games out there in which RT is providing real better visuals or you must work with CUDA or whatever, then AMD is the way to go.

Until you run out of RAM, then you have no performance because of needing to go over the PCIE bus. Ultimately though, if you're happy with your purchase, stay that way until you run out of memory and upgrade. Maybe at that time remember what Nvidia did to you and consider a used Nvidia card for a another generation so they still get the same amount out of you per year as if they had made the 4070 with the 256-bit 16gb config it should have had.

Graphicscores are not compareable from NVIDIA to AMD. not in the slightest as you see in the gamingperformancechart. But yeah, its common knowledge that NVIDIA makes best of its CUDA and stuff. Still, if you seriously work with your GPU then youll find yourself pretty much bottlenecked with your VRAM too. 4070ti Super would be much better. Or a used 3090, tho i dont know the Prices of the Used market in your country

Its like a fast cache the GPU can use for getting data required for computation
for example, you're rendering a 3D game scene, it would first load the entire map and all the textures into the vram
and then it can do the computation extremely fast as the vram on gpu is very fast (about 20 gigabit per second for rtx 3090)

Its not as cut and dry as “well my computer only uses 20gb of ram so I only need 24gb total” thats not how that works, I have 64gb of ram and even sitting relatively idle it uses almost all of it because it can, it’s not space constrained so why clear it if it doesn’t have to

Depends on usecase. Light gaming and browser work would only require 16 gigs
AI workload, or game dev would benefit from having 64 gigs
The more ram you throw at windows, the more will use it, but generally u wont see any major performance improvements
unless ofcourse RAM was the bottleneck in usecases I described above

4070 : Newer, power efficient, worse raster in comparison, newer tech (ie FG, etc).
3090: Albeit older, and horribly power “efficient”. But, much better raster in comparison, more so now that the 4070 G6X has now been degraded to G6 only, with its performance being ever so closer to a 7700XT in gaming.

Both cards go for similar prices, and personally, if you have a decent enough PSU which can handle transients well, then get a 3090. The VRAM is really good to have, better performance overall, better AI training performance, better rendering (video and models), better RT, and better PT.

In my opinion, 4070 should be purchased when-
1- You need to buy new (as of now).
2- Need the power efficiency/ Have a lower watt psu than 850w
3- For some reason are erratic and want to “try” DLSS3 entirely.

its just one RT Generation difference. The Meta was ALWAYS "if you have X Highend Gen then dont get Y Mid gen".

You have the iPhone 15? Then dont Upgrade to iPhone 16, it wont be much of a difference.

iPhone 15 Pro max still beats iPhone 16 Normal.

Same with GPUs. Have a 4090? Dont buy 5070(ti). It wont be much of a difference.

Also you cant do much with Raytracing when your VRAM is full. Take that into the consideration. Many Games use more than 12GB VRAM in 1440p with Ultrasettings and RT on. IT TAKES VRAM.

I have it and i cant complain. Got it Oct 23 for 120€. I paly at 1440p BUT i also dont play much. Counterstrike 2, Forza Horizon 5, Wreckfest, GTA V and thats basically it. Last year i played through RE4 Remake and that also was a good experience. Settings in 1440 mid to high and youre good to go
