Guys, is there model of laptop today that offers robustness similar to 2000s laptops? Like there is minimal chassis or display flex, hinges that remain tight after several years, plastics don't crack catastrophically, displays don't get key marks or rows of dead pixels from travel, etc? I've had many models of laptops but nothing comes close to my ThinkPad R61 (from 2008). I'm not talking of toughbooks but general consumer/business laptops.

Toughness in general is mostly gone in favor of thinner and sleeker laptops (the majority of the market wants to carry a thin slab instead of a thick and heavy brick) but modern thinkpads seem to carry on with most of those attributes

I personally have not used a modern ThinkPad but looking at them they dont appear as robust. They seem like any other thin and light imo

i have a thinkpad P1 Gen2, and a thinkpad P16 from work, both have beefy performance, and are thick boys with plenty of cooling and dont feel like you could fold them like a burrito

The last thinkpad I’ve handled is the T70 (or T80 i forgot) and it is a chonky slab of a laptop

The T16 is thinner than the P1, but its more of a fake-thinness... its in the middle of laptop is the same thickness on both, but the T16 tapers towards the edge, making it look thin.. i use both for work, and they both work very well... and with the NEW bios for the P1 (and the default for the T16) they are quite quiet (P1 with default bios sounds like a jet engine)

Funnily enough the best budget laptop I bought in the last decade was a Chromebook I got for my elderly mom. Not only it withstood her clumsy handling, since she got it I haven't had any of the "honey, something is wrong with the computer" calls. It just works

And for someone who only uses web apps, netflix and emails, seems I made the right choice
