800 people work where i work, in about 15 different countries, many in different places within those countries... a single IT team cannot possibly be expected to travel to each location that the employees happen to be, to fix issues... thin clients connecting to a remote instance would be the best bet for us... but... those instances are still nowhere near as powerful as having an actual physical machine on your desk for the software devs.. so, some of us have physical machines, but the majority of our staff use thin clients, so the IT team can more easily manage things when they do go wrong. and that isnt about cost cutting, thats about just simple feasibility

burning plastic smell is usually an IC burning out... it could be any of them... but the PC still working fine means its likely a redundant IC, or partly redundant, or, an IC you arent using (ie. if its onboard audio, and you use something else for audio).. or it could be a port that has been incorrectly plugged in... could be several things...

if you are comfortable doing so, pull the SATA cables out of the back of all 3 of the HDDs, while windows is running (SATA is plug and play, so its fine), but leave the power cables plugged in. (DO NOT unplug the SSD)

then, plug 1 drive in at a time, making a note of which drive shows up in windows, and which drive does not.

The drive that does not, i would recommend you try:

a different SATA port with the same cable
the same SATA port with a different cable
a different SATA port with a different cable

if NONE of those 3 work, then the smoke you could smell was your HDD killing its self, and the HDD circuit board is probably dead
