viscid elm
#

Yeah this is why I recommended most if not everyone in my class turn it off

sour yacht
#

been using bitlocker for a loooong time now. before that i was using hw encrypted external drives etc. never had this problem πŸ˜„

#

its an old sata2 drive with broken sata port and some badsectors... so i don't think i'd put anything important in this disk. also pw not being some of my frequently used ones means it was prolly a throwaway pw.

#

but not being able to 100% sure is the problem. if i wipe it. there's no going back

#

sour yacht

nah not happening to me. also i have a 50+ digit bitlocker pw πŸ˜„

viscid elm
#

Bitlocker only does shiii on hardware change

#

If they have the windows password it does nothing

sour yacht
#

nop. i changed all the policies.

#

asks for pw every time

viscid elm
#

Wtf do you do to need that

sour yacht
#

encrypting drive without password protection is pointless lol...

#

bitlocker is useless with default options

short rock
#

can you tell I'm a security freak

viscid elm
#

Hmm maybe

#

Yeah I should get a few more usb drives

short rock
#

I have too many USB drives

grim belfry
#

For 99% of situations Bitlocker is fantastic. It's only those at high risk of a targeted attack that should choose something a bit stronger

short rock
#

I have like, 12 or something

sour yacht
#

i disable tpm, change policies to ask pw every time. use 256bit xts-aes software encryption, disable recovery with 48-digit numeric key to 256-bit .bek file only. safer this way imo.

grim belfry
pliant karma
#

But that is those I have worked with and built trust with.

sour yacht
#

whats the point of bitlocker with its defaults tho? if someone steals ur pc they won't change the hardware so the disk wont be locked...

grim belfry
#

The main purpose of Bitlocker is to prevent extraction of data from a lost or stolen device, and the default config does that well

sour yacht
#

nah it doesn't. thats the problem...

short rock
grim belfry
#

It does. Take the drive from that stolen machine and you won't have any useful data

sour yacht
#

why would u take the drive tho? u have the device...

grim belfry
sour yacht
#

and when the hw isnt changed drive wont be locked

short rock
#

shit I can't continue the example

#

anway the point is there could be data on the drive worth more than the device

sour yacht
#

the thing is... if they dont take that drive and put on some other machine. drive wont be locked... and they have the entire computer. they wont steal just the drive πŸ˜„

short rock
#

there's this thing called the lock screen

#

you kinda need to get through that to get to the machine

grim belfry
#

@manic torrent I'm understanding this correctly, yeah?

grim belfry
short rock
grim belfry
#

When the system is powered the keys are stored in system memory

graceful burrow
#

System memory is volatile

#

No power = no data

short rock
#

which is why I asked the question

grim belfry
short rock
#

I get it now

grim belfry
#

Before boot it's stored on the TPM

short rock
#

preparing for liftoff or some shit wtf is going on

manic torrent
#

However, depending on a bunch of different things, for a skilled/resourced adversary the keys can be recovered

manic torrent

#

Oh, and also I like money.

patent violet
#

Bitlocker is great when you have it as a means of Managing the encrypted drive, but not as an actual encryption layer

pliant karma
patent violet
#

If you set it up to use the TPM and OPAL/SED, what it will do is simply provide you the means to decrypt the drive using the drives built in encryption functionality

pliant karma
#

Looks like they had a laptop cycle

#

Student Government office still has the G9s for staff and students but those are still in service for some time till replacement.

patent violet
#

This is really what you have to setup

#

also this

#

Since the encryption is hardware based you can also unlock it in linux

sour yacht
grim belfry
#

The lockscreen is nothing

patent violet
#

yeah once the system boots up, that usually means you are already decrypted

#

doing anything after that is easy

#

unless there is a data drive with the actual "wanted" data and that is setup to unlock only after user login

sour yacht
#

even if tpm provides some additional security. it wont do it for other drives, just os drive... so i dont think its important at all

#

if bitlocker without tpm is not secure enough 95% of my data is not secure anyways

patent violet
#

yeah the TPM is required for the hardware encryption, I prefer that.

graceful burrow
#

I mean
I got the tpm already
And it does make it more secure
At no extra cost at all to me

Why wouldn't I lmao

patent violet
grim belfry
#

Duh

patent violet
#

totally

graceful burrow
#

They're stealing my data anyway

sour yacht
patent violet
#

if they are gonna be the ones to steal it, it needs to be done in a way where they are the only ones who CAN steal it

graceful burrow
#

I could not have ever used a Microsoft product ever and they'd have stolen my data

patent violet
#

keys can be stolen in memory

#

you can even set the TPM owner auth password yourself if you really want

#

this is actually important if you intend to use it in linux to unlock the drives in the same manner

sour yacht
#

my point is. tpm only protects the os drive. so it wont do anything for my fixed storage drives or external drives?

#

bulk of my data are on those drives... so using tpm on os drive wont actually provide me any additional safety

patent violet
#

Oh I see what you are complaining about now

#

Ok so the TPM only stores the keys in a safe manner. When you unlock the TPM, it sends the keys to the drive in a way that cant be sniffed right?

#

So after this point, it is assumed that you can store something like a Virtual Smart card on your TPM using the Virtual Smart card service to unlock the data drives after

#

Yeah I just checked. It stores a key on your system in a file (hashed) that automatically unlocks the other drives by default

#

So yes, it is protected by the TPM in the sense you must still go through that

#

in fact the scenario I mentioned above regarding the lockscreen and data drive unlock is just for you

manic torrent
#

And ... Yes it does

#

"this thing doesn't solve all my possible problems, so it's shit"

sour yacht
# patent violet Software based encryption is much more vuln to attacks

afaik it was the opposite? dont know the current status but some of the most popular ssds had their hw encryption cracked https://x.com/matthew_d_green/status/1059435094421712896

Several SSDs with hardware encryption appear to be busted. But the really terrible thing is that Bitlocker apparently relies totally on the SSD encryption if you have it. https://t.co/UGTsvnFv9Y via @ProfWoodward

#

thats when i switched to software encryption

grim belfry
#

I'm surprised you aren't using veracrypt or something

manic torrent
#

When I was doing things that needed it, I was using luks etc and a long passphrase

sour yacht
#

so i might be wrong but here's how i see it:
bitlocker with hw encryption: if bitlocker OR drive is vulnerable, ur data is vulnerable.
bitlocker software encryption: only if the bitlocker is vulnerable, ur data is vulnerable.

patent violet
#

The way they were doing data decryption/encryption is by basically saying "If Key == CorrectKey, then Decrypt"
