vapid smelt

patent violet
red girder
#

i know that, just listing off one of the examples

patent violet
#

You had different extended instruction sets added over time. New ACPI Standards to help with power consumption and control along with load efficiency. You had new I/O standards that were implemented into the CPU. New Memory Controller designs

#

All of this together can really make redesign with the intent of additional performance on top during a release cycle very very difficult to achieve

#

because with all these additions, you have new IP Design suddenly and any "improvements" you just wanted to stack on top of your previous design may no longer apply

#

so by the time you are done with all of the above, only then can you really focus on your performance improvements

#

but too late, you ran out of time

#

time to release

#

I think however you are still right in principal

#

Intel did a great job updating all these standards and these new not so directly performance related improvements

#

Now that those improvements are stagnating because standards are not needing to improve by so much due to increase in I/O Demands

#

Intel is having difficulty focusing on performance over function improvements

#

ACPI, UEFI, PPL, TDAR, PDAR, you name it.... intel is on top of it
Performance? Well now they may have bitten off more than they can chew. It doesnt help all those standards are open standards that AMD and others implement. They benefit off Intel's work

#

So AMD and others can now focus on everything else

#

Intel lost that luxury

#

Its their own fault though

red girder
#

yeah, i know all that already, i was just saying they were stagnent, never said they werent making improvements at all

patent violet
#

Even the ACPI spec was untouched

red girder
#

well yeah they are stagnenting again though different reasons id say

patent violet
#

Well the government held out on the money they were promised and Intel is for sure freaking out over this since they used it all before actually getting it

#

Im sure that didnt help

pulsar violet
#

Sent a complaint to the CCTC (Canadian FCC) and my ISP contacted me the very next day figuring out ways to resolve the issue when i tried contacting them before with no solutions.

red girder
#

patent violet

Despite the FCC having some teeth on compliance they are ran by a bunch of fools

red girder

think the other agency that doesnt play around is the FAA

strange niche
#

hey guys anyone here who use startallback? i've got a good second latency when i press my windows key for the menu to show up

pulsar violet
#

they get stuck with a big fine if they don’t help out also there were no plans of fibre in my area and i’m like 5 minutes from Calgary that’s almost all fibre, and they start talking to me like they are about install the damn thing and tell me the status

pulsar violet
red girder
patent violet
#

that multi-mode fiber pipe is much harder to actually put down

red girder
#

might as well sign your death certificate personally before you make that phonecall

patent violet
#

and that needs to be run to a distribution box

#

So in reality, the multimode fiber may actually be quite a distance from you

#

its just the single mode coming off of that that goes to residents that is close to you

pulsar violet
#

could you dumb down the modes all i know is Telus guarantees direct fibre

patent violet
pulsar violet
#

oh ok

red girder
#

is simple, multi mode wavy, single mode, not wavy

patent violet
#

multimode supports varying wavelengths and polarities allowing for a theoretical maximum of 800gbit

#

however its shorter range

pulsar violet
#

@patent violet just checked my ISP and the neighborhood less than a mile away from me that’s brand new has fibre

#

maps literally says a 1 minute drive

patent violet
#

Yeah but the IX they are attached to may be 10-30 miles away

#

you cant splice off their link

#

it has to be from the IX to you

pulsar violet
#

oh ok

red girder
#

think of it like a small in home wired network

manic torrent
patent violet
#

assume these are neighborhoods

#

they are close together

#

but you still gotta do direct links between the neighborhood and the distribution point

pulsar violet
#

so basically a fibre optic network switch?

patent violet
#

The IX usually is something like that. OLT's as we call them

pulsar violet
#

oh ok

patent violet
#

but one OLT port can many times be "split"

#

These are whats in your cabinet in your neighborhood

pulsar violet
#

oh ok

patent violet
#

This is a 1:64 split

pulsar violet
#

oh ok

patent violet
#

now unlike Coax fiber doesnt use frequency filtering or anything like that. Its actually "time slots"

next jetty
patent violet
#

or

pulsar violet
#

oh ok we had coax fibre in our neighborhood in our old home but we didn’t upgrade from VDSL cause it was a difference provider and it’s also Coax Fibre, and they would have to run it under a highway for use that ran through our town

Idk how much the FTTH installation cost my ISP but I would imagine it’s like $2,000?

wise tundra
#

Sounds about right

solemn goblet
#

I’m guessing cable ISP’s would rather upgrade coax then going full fiber

#

Upgrading coax is actually pretty cheap. It can be like $100 to upgrade coax.

#

“Upgrading” coax just means delivering higher speeds on coax.

wise tundra
#

My ISP installed fiber on the main road and installed boxes that convert it to coax to the minor roads

#

But they're heavily limiting upload speeds for no good reason

#

I get 300 down, 20 up and the best you can get is 1000 down, 50 up

solemn goblet
#

In my area the fiber goes into the neighborhood and then to a fiber node. The fiber node is where the coax is connected

#

HFC network. Hybrid fiber coax

wise tundra
#

It's DOCSIS 3.0 so it should be able to do way more upload wise

patent violet
solemn goblet

My ISP does plan to roll out DOCSIS 4.0. Probably in 2025-2026.

#

Coax here usually has amplifiers. There’s no like N + 0 HFC network here yet.

wise tundra
#

Does GPU passthrough work with GTX 900-series?

patent violet
#

Copper costs more material wise than fiber now
DOCSIS transceivers are way more costly than fiber transceivers
It's scaling capabilities are non existent* and have to be augmented with fiber
It degrades way faster to the elements

*Coax is analog so in theory the bandwidth is "unlimited" but it's not actually

wise tundra
#

Installed a GTX 970 in my workstation and setup a VM to use it but now I'm starting to doubt this will work

solemn goblet
#

Coax is definitely more unreliable here

#

It started going out daily a month before my FTTH installation

patent violet

That's what makes it so much more icky

The apartment building I live in sadly has mostly retired people so I doubt they'd agree to get fiber

about 75MBps

manic torrent
#

Why is it dumb

lilac bear
#

do you happen to work for Verizon

red girder
# manic torrent Why is it dumb

Well they have promised to bring fiber optic to my area, yet they keep putting it off and wont even provide an explanation, its been like this for a few years, infact one of the other ISPs just stop advertising the change over entirely, then we got our county isp which is aweful

patent violet
#

Or there was problems with regulation and easements

#

Eventually the RFP failed

red girder
#

That makes alot of sense

#

anyway having faster networking would be amazing because at the moment my server for a in-development project just cant send enough data out to players without hanging

#

downstream speeds are at 600Mbps right now and upstream is at 20Mbps

#

and my ISP just doesnt offer anything faster that isnt a massivly expensive buisness plan

manic torrent
restive lion
#

(Important note: bobs currency is worthless mmLul )

red girder
#

again i dont have much extra to spare for external hosting just yet, besides id then have to fix hardware specific issues with the software, right now its very picky about the CPU it uses as the server software is setup to use a consumer grade intel processor as its all i had at the time, specifcally utilizing e cores to handle certain tasks in game and using P cores for others

#

works really well! until it runs on a system that doesnt have P and E cores, so anything non intel just kills the software

restive lion

Now that doesn't sound very scalable of you

Nitro 5 or Gigabyte G5 for budget GAMING laptops
Lenovo Thinkpad for a regular ass laptop (these are worse than the IBM ones, and no time travel doesn't exist yet)
or straight up a MacBook which has the best battery life-ish, the M1 is really good but the M4 is lackluster battery life

TechLinked should do a retraction. The pokemon patents weren't granted after Palworld was made, They were split after Palworld was made. Patents are only supposed to cover one thing at a time and not include multiple things in a single patent. Nintendo/Pokemon Company split up their patents to be narrower in scope which is is the actual correct thing to do. The original patents were issued years ago.

#

As much as it sucks Nintendo is probably in the right and Palworld should just fork over the 60K

i mean for very very specific mechanics its fair game, but for very general and broad mechanics its just scummy

mossy fern

TechLinked published false information that is extremely important to the case, so imo a retraction is needed

red girder

like a mechanic that is valid to patent for example is Warthunder's Mouse Guided Instructor Control Scheme

#

which is a rather complex and specific mechanic that allows an aircraft being controlled in thirdperson/firstperson in a 3D space to be operated by simply pointing a mouse cursor

but patenting the idea of a mechanic that allows seamless walking to running to climbing is very scummy as it would prevent other games from having seamless movement transition animation

red girder

:( its weird

long briar

it's weird, but it's a really good middle ground

red girder

yeah true

#

even 24gb is a good middle gound between 16 and 32

onyx pivot
long briar
#

24gb doesn't offer a price advantage over 32

red girder
#

doesnt make it less weird though, like im super used to seeing things in power of 2 in the pc space that its just odd

long briar
#

but 64gb kits are expensive compared to 48gb

red girder
#

well luckily if i ever do need to upgrade my moduals are replaceable

and id trade my hinge for replaceable modules anyday

red girder
#

it is, but large scale scenes just hurt the system

onyx pivot
red girder

red girder

ECC is normally a latency downgrade

you don't use it unless you have to

most consumer chips don't support it either

red girder

yeah thats the big server stuff aint it

lilac bear

I was really confident you could just get any RAM and it'll be fine
