It depends on how you see things, and where you are from. If you live in a developed country and have a nice job, sure it can make sense that an iphone is 'cheaper' than linux when it comes to your time

But there are a lot of people who are financially disadvantaged/live in lower income countries where things like an iphone are prohibitively expensive, maybe costing several months worth of their income. To those people, spending time learning an OS is far less time expensive than an iphone, its all about perspective

It also depends on how you value your own time, if tinkering with an OS is something you want to do and enjoy, its less about the cost of time and more the enjoyment of a hobby

But again, perspective matters a lot in this context. Its unfair to definitively say one or the other
