dont know how it works in AUS, but in the UK, you can go to court and claim hardship, where losing your licence would critically impact your ability to do your job (ie, if you NEED your licence to do your job), and its a first offence... they switch the ban to 9 out of 12 points, with an additional 3 points suspended for 2 years, and a heavy fine

and in the uk, speeding has 2 stages. less than 2x the speed limit, its 3 points and a fine.. more than 2x the speed limit, there is no limit to what the judge can give you, but its usually a 2 year ban from driving and a big fine for the first time, and if you repeat, you are deemed to be negligent and can go to jail... 100mph+ on any road, no matter what the limit is considered under the same banner as 2x the limit on other roads (so 100mph+ on a 70mph motorway, is still considered as 2x)
